Joyce Carol Oates is in full fire here. The motifs and themes of this rich, intricately textured, realistic novel belong to the American experience of the 1950s and '60s. But the vision of life that animates them is so clear and unflinching that the past comes to us with the force of revelation. "Fiction of extraordinary imaginative power."--The New York Times Book Review. Nominated for the National Book Award.

From Publishers Weekly
Murder galvanizes an industrial town in upstate New York when a husky red-haired corpse is fished from a polluted river in 1956. With sure strokes, Oates ( American Appetites ) delineates the racial hatreds leading to the crime that then entangles black basketball hero Verlyn ("Jinx") Fairchild and blonde Iris Courtney. Their coming of age from the mid-'50s to the mid-'60s--in the shadow of the civil rights struggle and John F. Kennedy's assassination--their love and their unpremeditated complicity in the town's violence are brilliantly portrayed. Jinx, appealing in his "innocence and impotence," can't help himself or his brother, Sugar Baby, wrecked by drug dealing. Iris, alert, locked into icy detachment, watches Jinx suffer, while her own alcoholic mother and gambling father drift apart. Blotting out her problems, Iris sleepwalks into the household of the exotic Savages, art historians who prize her beauty. Oates is a master at realizing the social forces that twist the fates of her characters. BOMC dual main selection.

From Library Journal
The ever-prolific Oates is on familiar ground in her newest novel, which treats the seedy side of a working-class city in upstate New York in the 1950s. Her heroine will be familiar to Oates fans, too: Iris Courtney is the only child of a broken home, gambling father, and alcoholic mother; she's waif-like, intelligent, and sensitive and carries with her the air of a victim. When a black classmate--handsome, academic, athletic Jinx Fairchild--murders mean "white trash" Little Red Garlock to protect Iris from Red's lewd advances, Iris carries the secret through her adolescence. The Courtney, Garlock, and Fairchild families are here used to explore racism at a time of awakening social consciousness, but Iris alone seems fully imagined. A large, significant work that will please Oates fans. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 12/89.

Review
In 1956 in upstate New York, a murder committed in rage binds the lives of a fifteen-year-old white woman and a seventeen-year-old black man forever. Their casual, school acquaintance takes on another dimension as they decide, without words, not to confess the crime. It's a decision that takes a toll on each: for one it means an erosion of self-esteem, for the other it creates a smug but false confidence that they got away with it. Depicting children who come from homes that are struggling financially and emotionally to get by, Joyce Carol Oates explores, through black and white, male and female, and parent and child voices, the impact that parents' decisions have on their children and that children's choices have on their future lives. In this small, industrial town before the Civil Right's movement of the 1960's, the issue of race both confuses and defines many of the characters' actions. Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart looks closely into these young peoples' lives: why they remained silent about the murder, why they felt they had no other options, and what it cost them. At times the reader may want to reach through the pages and shake these people, tell them to see a bigger picture; at the same time, it's hard not to feel absorbed in the characters lives, as though we are making their choices with them. -- For great reviews of books for girls, check out Let's Hear It for the Girls: 375 Great Books for Readers 2-14. -- From 500 Great Books by Women; review by Holly Smith

Brazen and contemplative--Oates at her best
By Angela
Even in the realm of Oates--one of our most fearless authors today--this is a brave and brash examination of race and sex. I loved this book because it is an unblinking look at a span of life and all the variables: sex, class, family, morality. If you've never read Oates, this is a great place to start, and if you are already a fan, this is a must-read.

Because it is Brilliant
By A Customer
People often say that a book was so good they couldn't put it down ... well this was so good I had to put it down, so I could absorb it and think about it and savour it. Oates delves so deeply into her characters it's almost painful. They are wonderfully human and believable. The story -- about how a murder binds together two teens, a poor white girl and a star black male athlete -- evokes working class America, in this case industrial upstate New York. Enjoyable and emotional.

One of Oates' best, from a teacher who taught it to absolutely riveted students. You won't regret reading this one
By Inmyhummelopinion
One of the best novels I've ever read, or taught. High school kids could not put it down; they even brought it into gym class to keep reading. Powerful, racist story line that twists the soul, and leaves you wanting things to be better, which they rarely are in real life. Oates' eloquent writing is above and beyond in this novel. Her sentences soar and then pull you back down to earth, where you will find yourself crying, and at its end, you may wish for another page...to turn.
We named our dog Jinx, after Oates' character. Yes, we did :)
