Wonderful book...
By LakeKids
Purchased this used book in wonderful condition because we wanted to reread John Wesley Powell's diary of the first trip down the Colorado through the Grand Canyon. This is a "bonus" book for anyone interested because of the gorgeous photos that accompany the text. Large size 10 x 14 inches makes this a really beautiful book, too nice to just use as a "coffee-table" display.

Poor Quality!
By Courtney K
Love the book, although it came with personal, handwritten notes in it! This was supposed to be a special gift, and now it's worthless as I don't want to give it away with a bunch of writing in it from strangers. Very disappointed!

I didn't realize this book is only a collection of quotes from the Pooh stories. Still a nice addition to the collection.

A nice keepsake for birthdays.

This isn't quite the book I remember from a long time ago, but a reasonable substitute. 4 Stars because the book had more writing in it than the description said it did.

Best For Chesapeake Dogs
By Robin Kimble
We just got a new Chesapeake Bay Retriever Puppy and the Breeder recommended this book to get. It's good, but I'm use to the simply kind of learning books like the, "For Dummies", but they don't have one for Chesapeake dogs. This seems to be the best out there for Chesapeake dogs.

From Publishers Weekly
In his fifth appearance ( The Faberge Egg ) San Francisco private eye Amos McGuffin is in New York City, trying to get his stagestruck ex-wife to bring their equally stagestruck young daughter back home. Then billionaire real estate mogul Victor Belmont offers Amos a hefty commission (and the services of a ruthless divorce lawyer) to investigate a recent attempt on his life. Suspects abound: a Park Avenue lawyer/bag man for the mob, a society bookie, a sadistic "enforcer," a buxom "chanteuse" and Belmont's playboy brother. There's murder, arson and nasty wheeling and dealing in real estate (fueled by Belmont's weird vision for Manhattan) before an upstate property clerk gives Amos the missing clue to the puzzle--which will startle few readers. Amos is an agreeable type, if rather too patient with his flibbertigibbet ex-wife, and, except for some talky explications, the book lopes along nicely toward a cynical ending.

From Library Journal
In New York to discuss child custody with ex-wife Marilyn, San Francisco PI Amos McGuffin walks into a job investigating the attempted bombing murder of rich developer Victor Belmont. A rival real estate developer, a snooty mob lawyer, a secretive society bookie, and a gambling playboy brother all figure as suspects, so the likable sleuth sniffs rarified--if increasingly stultifying and dangerous--air. Like other McGuffin titles ( The Faberge Egg, LJ 10/1/88; Fade Out, LJ 7/84), this glides along effortlessly and should please series followers.

Let's Get Lost, by Sarra Manning

Isabel’s friends are terrified of her, her teachers can’t get through to her, her family doesn’t understand her, and that’s just the way she likes it. Nothing gets to Isabel—not even her mother’s sudden death. When she meets an enigmatic guy named Smith, Isabel fights hard to keep hold of her cool, snarky image, but she soon finds herself coming apart at the seams, feeling the pain, and missing her mom. Let’s Get Lost is a poignant and utterly compelling novel, told with all the author’s trademark wit and sharp observation.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–Isabel, 16, is not the warmest soul. She credits her place at the top of the school pecking order to her status as the biggest bitch to ever stalk the halls of the institution. She rules the roost at home, too; her father's attempts to set limits are met with sharp retorts and defiance. No one could ever guess how uncertain and frightened she feels. She has horrible nightmares on the few nights she is able to sleep and, more often than not, drinks to ease any doubts about her burgeoning relationship with a college student whom she met at a party. The teen's prickly nature and first-strike mentality are explained in part by the recent death of her mother; however, while readers may in fact know people like Isabel, she is not easy to relate to or even care about. Upon discovering her father's plans to send her away to school, she seeks solace in alcohol and in former enemies, and ends up narrowly avoiding tragedy. The resolution seems inevitable, yet is not completely satisfying. Veteran readers of Manning might be interested in the activities of Isabel's boyfriend, Smith, and his roommates, who are ex-members of the band The Hormones from the author's Guitar Girl (Dutton, 2004).–Amy S. From Booklist
Sixteen-year-old Isabel insults her friends, sabotages her enemies, steals from her father, bullies her brother, lies, drinks, and smokes. She also makes the most of her hard-fought position as the queen bee and "biggest bitch" at her school. But Isabel's story is more than that of a bad girl gone worse; it's about a girl unable to grieve for her mother until she hits bottom. The one bright spot in Isabel's life is Smith, a thoughtful college student Isabel meets at a party. She lies to him about her age and has a sexual relationship with him. Although he helps her find respite from the person she has become and despises, the lies required to maintain the relationship accelerate Isabel's final unraveling. Despite Isabel's abrasiveness, readers will see through her facade, find themselves drawn to her, and be saddened by her self-destructive downward spiral. When all appears lost, a sudden, tidy redemption ends the novel on a hopeful note. Fans of Manning's Guitar Girl (2003) will recognize some familiar characters here. Heather Booth

A story to get lost inside.
By SD Fan
This book was amazing. I was very interested in it and couldn't put it down. The characters are developed beautifully and the story is written in such a way that you really get into the words and emotions that are emitted from them.

Isabelle's story is one that could have been cliche, but wasn't. It was a story like none I've ever read, even though it seems like I would have since it is about the main character dealing with (or not really) with her Mother's death. And then there is Smith, the older guy she dates though he doesn't know she's only 16, who brings so much to the book in a unique way that made me adore his character.

Great story full of emotions, I'll definitely be reading it again!

I wouldn't recommend this book to those under the age of 15...but other than that- Enjoy this great read, I know I did!

Inside the mind of a bully girl
By yasminkhan1959
Isabella pulled me right in. Sarra Manning did a convincing job of presenting her as a bully girl on the surface but underneath are all these layers of feelings and longings.

I got right away that this was the only way for Isabella to survive at school and it was convincingly put forth. Her relationship with childhood friend Dot was also explored and well developed. The real slutty bully girls Nancy and Ella were also vividly drawn.

Isabella's relationship with Smith is much easier to understand than the one between Dean and Molly in "Guitar Girl". Smith fulfills Isabella's need for warmth on a physical and emotional level.

The memories of her mother are also full of feeling and reality. I enjoyed this book very much and credit Manning with presenting a very difficult subject in an enthralling manner.

A better book than Guitar Girl
By JesusJuice
Isabella is a tough girl who just doesn't give a damn about anything, since the death of her mother, she has developed this tough exterior about life and everyonei n her life. She is a bully. And she wants no one to see her hurt and feelings only her tough exterior and layers. I was instantly hooked with this book. I cried for Isabella. I was even more hooked when Smith came into the picture. There relationship is alot easier to understand than the one between Dean and Molly in Guitar Girl. Smith is the only one that can see Isabella's need for love and how hurt she is in the inside. I really liked this book. The ending was great.

Bettyville: A Memoir, by George Hodgman

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD

“A beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom.” —Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club

“The idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding.” —Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home

When George Hodgman leaves Manhattan for his hometown of Paris, Missouri, he finds himself—an unlikely caretaker and near-lethal cook—in a head-on collision with his aging mother, Betty, a woman of wit and will. Will George lure her into assisted living? When hell freezes over. He can’t bring himself to force her from the home both treasure—the place where his father’s voice lingers, the scene of shared jokes, skirmishes, and, behind the dusty antiques, a rarely acknowledged conflict: Betty, who speaks her mind but cannot quite reveal her heart, has never really accepted the fact that her son is gay.

As these two unforgettable characters try to bring their different worlds together, Hodgman reveals the challenges of Betty’s life and his own struggle for self-respect, moving readers from their small town—crumbling but still colorful—to the star-studded corridors of Vanity Fair. Evocative of The End of Your Life Book Club and The Tender Bar, Hodgman’s New York Times bestselling debut is both an indelible portrait of a family and an exquisitely told tale of a prodigal son’s return.

Amazon.com Review

The Amazon Spotlight Pick for March 2015: When George Hodgman left Manhattan for Paris to visit his aging mother, he didn’t realize it would be the beginning of an unintended, and indeterminate tenure as a caregiver. Did I mention that it’s Paris, Missouri? They say you can’t go home again, and in Hodgman’s case, you can understand why he wouldn’t want to—Paris hadn’t proven to be the most hospitable place for someone coming to terms with their sexuality. This was compounded by the fact that Hodgman’s parents didn’t approve of who he “turned out to be,” which was as specific as they were willing to get on the matter. Any gaps in their understanding were filled with an insidious silence that kept this otherwise loving family at arm’s length. I haven’t forgotten what this book is called and, no doubt, you will fall in love with the impossible and endearing woman that is its namesake. But at its heart, Bettyville serves as a poignant cautionary tale about the dangers of leaving difficult things unsaid, and in these pages, Hodgman practices what he preaches. –Erin Kodicek

Review
Nautilus Book Awards Gold Winner

Praise for Bettyville

“A remarkable, laugh-out-loud book . . . Rarely has the subject of elder care produced such droll human comedy, or a heroine quite on the mettlesome order of Betty Baker Hodgman. For as much as the book works on several levels (as a meditation on belonging, as a story of growing up gay and the psychic cost of silence, as metaphor for recovery), it is the strong-willed Betty who shines through.”
—The New York Times

“A lovely memoir . . .You won’t finish this tale dry-eyed.”
—People, Book of the Week

“A gorgeously constructed memoir . . . Hodgman creates an unforgettable portrait of his mother, Betty—a strong-willed nonagenarian struggling against the slow-motion breakdown of her mind and body. He evokes her with wit and tenderness.”
—The New York Times Book Review

“Without a doubt my favorite book of the year. Wise, witty, and heartbreaking . . . a surprisingly profound and hilarious look at aging, mothers and sons, fathers and sons, growing up gay and small-town life in America.”
—Nathan Lane, “Who Read What: Books of the Year 2015,” The Wall Street Journal

“A humorous, bittersweet account of Hodgman’s caring for his aging, irascible mother.”
—Vanity Fair

“Hodgman has written what will be seen, even years from now, as the quintessential book on taking care. . . . His desire to empathize, his focus on goodness, his search for hope allow him to find the beauty in the hour of now.”
—Chicago Tribune

“An intimate, heartfelt portrait of a mother and son, each at the crossroads of life . . . Hodgman’s sharp wit carries the book ever forward.”
—Minneapolis Star-Tribune

“A superb memoir . . . Hodgman is by turns wry, laugh-out-loud funny, self-deprecating, insecure to the point of near suicide, and an attentive caregiver despite occasional, understandable resentments. . . . I have read several hundred American memoirs; I would place Bettyville in the top five.”
—Steve Weinberg, Kansas City Star

“In his tender, sardonic, and fearless account of life with Betty—who has never acknowledged that her son is gay—Hodgman delivers an epic unfolding of his lifelong search for acceptance and love.”
—The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

“Hodgman paints a witty and poignant portrait of a son and his mother reconciling their differences and learning, among other things, how to cook, come to grips with caretaking, understand unspoken sexuality, and treat each other with patience, love, and self-respect. Surely we all have a beautifully complex and hilarious (if not semi-dysfunctional) relationships with our mothers, but none of us are likely to commemorate it with the skill and humor of Hodgman.”
—Los Angeles Magazine

“An exquisitely written memoir about the complicated but deeply genuine love a son feels for his courageous, headstrong, vulnerable mother in the twilight of her life. George Hodgman is stunningly clear-eyed and yet so darned big-hearted. Bettyville is just wonderful.”
—Jeannette Walls, author of The Glass Castle

“The idea of a cultured gay man leaving New York City to care for his aging mother in Paris, Missouri, is already funny, and George Hodgman reaps that humor with great charm. But then he plunges deep, examining the warm yet fraught relationship between mother and son with profound insight and understanding. This book looks outside, too, offering a moving lament for small-town America. Hodgman tenderly evokes the time before family farms and small businesses were replaced by meth labs and Walmarts. Yet he’s not sentimental about that lost world—he knew its cruelties firsthand. As George and his mother come to terms with one another at the end of her days, the book begins to shimmer with something much more rare than love: a boundless, transcendent, and simple kindness. Bettyville is a beautiful book about the strange plenitude that comes from finally letting go of everything.”
—Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home

“Bettyville is a beautifully crafted memoir, rich with humor and wisdom. George Hodgman has created an unforgettable book about mothers and sons, and about the challenges that come with growing older and growing up.”
—Will Schwalbe, author of The End of Your Life Book Club

“This is a superior memoir, written in a witty and episodic style, yet at times it’s heartbreaking . . . filled with a lifetime’s worth of reflection and story after fascinating story.”
—Library Journal (starred review)

“Hodgman writes with wit and empathy about all the loss he’s confronted with. Betty’s poor health is mirrored by the failure of towns like Paris, whose farms and lumberyards are now Walmarts and meth labs. Coming out in the age of AIDS, he lost the people he was close to when he had nowhere else to turn. . . . That doesn’t mean Bettyville is without humor—far from it. Paris eccentrics (one woman shampoos her hair in the soda fountain) compete with Hodgman’s colleagues in the office of Vanity Fair. . . . This is a portrait of a woman in decline, but still very much alive and committed to getting the lion’s share of mini-Snickers at every opportunity. When things are left unsaid between parents and children, it leaves a hurt that can never be completely repaired, but love and dedication can make those scarred places into works of art. Bettyville is one such masterpiece.”
—BookPage

“The book is instantly engaging, as Hodgman has a wry sense of humor, one he uses to keep others at a distance. Yet the book is also devastatingly touching. Betty is one tough cookie, and she is crumbling. Hodgman as a young man came out around the same time AIDS did, complicating his already complicated feelings immeasurably. There’s a lot for Hodgman to handle, yet he does, despite the urge to give in to his own sadness and his own former drug addiction. A tender, resolute look at a place, literal and figurative, baby boomers might find themselves.”
—Booklist

“Bettyville is a gorgeous memoir. I was completely engaged, not just because of George Hodgman’s great ear and his sense of timing, but because he delivers Betty to us in such a manner that she steps off the page . I felt transported to a better place, to a time period and a web of relationships with which we can all identify,  no matter where we grew up. Beyond the humor and the pathos, the quotidian and the bizarre, there remain profound lessons about life and love that I will carry away.”
—Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone

“George Hodgman achieves something stunning with this book—by paying such deep, loving attention to his mother’s (admittedly colorful) life, he offers us the chance to pay close attention to our own strange and beautiful Bettyvilles, which in the end is all we can ask of any art. This bejeweled pillbox is rich and funny and heartwrenching and might just you cure you of your ills; if those ills include loneliness or feeling like you don’t belong—you are not alone.”
—Nick Flynn, author of Another Bullshit Night in Suck City

“One of the great benefits of reading memoir is that it offers the reader more people to love. I love Betty, and I love George Hodgman, whose beautiful book this is. Read Bettyville. Laugh, weep, and be grateful.”
—Abigail Thomas, author of A Three Dog Life

“Bettyville reminded me of some Homeric legend, complete with treacherous chimeras and ravenous gorgons, except that it is told with such grace, wit, and spirited generosity that you hardly sense you are on a fragile bark, adrift on a perilous sea. This story of a sensitive Midwestern boy coming to terms with his homosexuality, his drug addiction, his clueless parents, his all-out war with shame, is nothing short of epic. It begins as a simple trip home from fast-track Manhattan to Paris, Missouri, to care for a failing mother, but by the time we are through, we have descended to an underworld, witnessed a plague, traveled all nine circles of hell, and emerged exhilarated by the grit and valor of our remarkable guide. It is, in every sense, a tale about the power of love.”
—Marie Arana, author of American Chica

“With great tenderness, honesty, and a searing, sardonic humor, George Hodgman has written a love letter to his mother, at once a penance and a tribute.  In doing so, he has given us Betty, a character for the ages. This is a beautiful, illuminating book.”
—Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion

“When I read the first few pages of Bettyville, I immediately connected. The detail is poetry and, yes, George Hodgman tells a story that is all our stories if we grow up different, struggling not to hurt those we treasure. But what I will most remember is the human struggle of Betty—the woman at the window, the woman at the piano, the woman whose desire to help others represents the best of small-town America. The silence she was taught and the complications of our parents’ journeys to be there for us, as best they could, is what I will take away from Bettyville, where she will always reside. Hers is the quiet love that outlasts the distances and lets us survive.”
—Richard Blanco, United States inaugural poet, author of The Prince of los Cucuyos: A Miami Childhood

Lovely, honest blend of past and present
By Kate Stout
In this loving and lovely memoir, the author returns home to Paris Missouri to care for his 90 year old mother. Never an easy-going person, she is now struggling with loss of memory, health problems, and the deep frustrations of losing her ability to lead the social life that was so important to her. She's a stubborn person, and so is he. There's an honesty to the frustration he feels in trying to get her to do what needs to be done.

The book is more than a simple account of the last year or so his mother's life. The author moves between his childhood in the 60's and 70's in this small town, where he always felt he was an outsider, and explores the role his homosexuality played in his relationship with his family. Coming from an old-school family, denial of unpleasant truths dominated, and being roughly the same age as the author, I recognize many patterns.

He has a deep love for his family, and yet wonders how come he found it so hard to be close to others. He mourns the loss of community in his hometown, while recounting how he felt the pain of being different there.

This is a kind and honest seeming memoir. He touches on his homosexuality, and come of age as the AIDs epidemic hit, and his drug addiction, but these are not lurid. They represent real experiences, but are connected to his issues of pushing people away.

I really enjoyed this book, and felt the full force of his mother's personality, as well his stumbling his way towards knowing himself better. There's no brilliant moment of happy ending, just a sense of having tried to do the right thing, a sense of accommodations between two people, and some understanding.

The writing is also lovely, at times almost lyrical.

IT DOESN'T GET BETTER THAN THIS
By Charlotte Vale-Allen
I'm a hard sell. When someone tells me a book is funny, I invariably wind up wondering why s/he found it funny -- because I definitely did not. I tend to ignore most reviews of books (or movies), preferring to decide for myself on the merits, or lack of them in a given piece of work. That said, I chose to review Bettyville because I was actually intrigued by the cover--the very reason we've always been told not to judge a book. But the photograph had an authentic feel to it that rang a small bell for me. So I got the book. And I truly loved it. I loved George Hodgman and his mother; his father, too.

Hodgman's great gift is to present the connective tissue between reader and writer, the thoughts and feelings and events that knit us together in a manner achieved only by the most profoundly truthful and deeply felt telling of lives lived. In spite of our obvious differences (male/female, straight/gay, etc) Hodgman's feelings mirror my own in too many ways to enumerate. He made me laugh repeatedly; he moved me often. I felt his irritation, his anger with himself, and his good-hearted impulses toward others. I knew him because he reveals himself so completely, so courageously, so hilariously. For example: "Just a typical American family, torn between love and homicide, but united in our own way." One just has to laugh at something so absolutely true.

This book deserves recognition and accolades. Read it and feel your heart open and then constrict, then open again. The parent in me wants to adopt the little boy in George. The child in me wants to be friends with that lonely boy whose isolation feels remembered to me. And the sister in me wants to help George prepare some treats for Betty, and then persuade her to put on her comfy old wrecked sandals so that we can all go out for a nice, easy walk.

Family And Tradition
By R PRIUS
This memoir looks at coming home, dealing with an elder parent who should probably be packed off to assisted living, and a kinder and gentler lifestyle where people are accepted for who they are even when that 'who' is not necessarily understood.
As a native of the Midwest there was a lot in this book that resonated with me. I grew up in urban suburban sprawl, but spent a lot of time in the gentler places so this was something I had experienced a little. In the beginning the author discusses the names of places in Missouri. His family home was in Paris, MO. I got a huge kick out of that because I'm not sure any state rivals Missouri in the name game. California, Mexico.....all real places and we are not talking states here.
However, the real heart and soul of this book is Hodgman's sometimes cantankerous mother who loves him dearly but can't quite accept or understand the fact that he is gay. Hodgman and his mother share a lot of things including their love of the family home and Paris. This book travels back and forth in time. It deals with the current concern for an aging parent and goes back to the old days where community as well as family counted and going to church was a major deal.
Hodgman has worked for Vanity Fair in New York among other prominent publications. He's enjoyed being in the epicenter of urban sophistication, but he also clings to the past and appreciates the easier ways of the Midwest and writes lyrically about it. He is a marvelous writer with a wry sense of humor but also an emotional honesty that hones in on family and tradition and his sincere love and unabashed affection for both.
This was such an enjoyable book that I was sorry when it ended.

Butch Karp s career prosecuting New York s worst criminals takes a chilling turn when a series of ghastly child murders opens a window into the city s hellish underworld. Karp and love-interest Marlene Ciampi pursue a psychopath known to his young victims as the Bogeyman, but what they find is more threatening than a lone predator. To stop the evil they unearth will take more than just courage in the courtroom; the two will need to follow a sinister trail into New York City s darkest corners, where the law is powerless to protect them. Tanenbaum--currently a candidate for Los Angeles D.A.--cooks up a shocking and credible addition to his N.Y.C.-based Butch Karp crime series. More than a million copies of Tanenbaum's books are in print, and his next, Reversible Error , will be a Dutton April release. Author tour.

From Library Journal
This cynical, fast-moving novel, the third in the Butch Karp series, concerns the workings of the judicial system in the Big City. The neat plot combines Satanism, pedophilia, Mafiosi, good-looking cops, corrupt judges, sociopaths, a pregnant one-eyed assistant district attorney who roller skates, and a love story, into something special. Tanenbaum, coauthor of two nonfiction crime books as well as De praved Indifference ( LJ 7/89) and No Lesser Plea (Watts, 1987), is also a former assistant district attorney and chief of homicide. As timely as tomorrow's nightly news, but not for the squeamish.

One of Tanenbaum's better books
By jparr@winfinity.com Dr. John B. Parr
First off, you did Mr. Tanenbaum a distinct dis favor in only publishing one review; I find that review totally out in left field. You have cost him many sales, I am sure; I bought several of his and passed up on that one just because of that re view, and had an opportunity to read someone else's copy wanting to find out why it was so bad. It was not, it is one of his better stories. It is different, I admit, but Tanenbaum has the art of making almost anything highly enter taining, as he did with this. His technique of keeping up with the lives of his characters are one of the series's strong points. I very highly recommend this book to any Tanenbaum fan, to any police story fan.

A pleasure for Tanenbaum fans
By Renee V. Cox
Although Immoral Certainty is one of Robert K. Tanenbaum's older Butch Karp novels it is well worth a read by fans, or even readers new to the series.
First published in 1991, this book goes back to the earlier days of the Karp-Ciampi association. Admittedly, this oddball couple may be an acquired taste. But their sizzling relationship is buttressed by a deep respect for each other's legal abilities. The author's own experience and understanding of the arcane world of the legal system enables him to lift improbable plot into the realm of logic and feasibility.
In fact, as Tanenbaum points out, the art of successfully nabbing criminals consists in a large part of the attending to boring minutiae by the foot soldiers of the prosecutorial staff. In the writer's own words, "The law radiates tedium the way a ballet does grace or an orchestra harmony." Fortunately for the reader, Tanenbaum sweeps us through the crucial humdrum of a criminal trial and highlights the nexus, so we all can delude ourselves, briefly, that we are as clever as a Butch Karp or a Marlene Ciampi. He connects the dots for us even as we are seduced by his seemingly far-fetched plots and sub-plots.
In this book, Marlene becomes acquainted with firearms and we are introduced to her bewitched fascination with their violent potential. "I don't know," she says after an initial visit to the firing range, "it had an effect on me I didn't expect." It turns out she's a natural. It is one of the ongoing talents of her character that becomes both useful to her and repelling to this reader.
Tanenbaum's characters are always interesting, although occasionally conveniently naïve. An example is the schoolteacher Anna who buys her sociopath boyfriend's explanation that the reason he uses a variety of credit cards with other people's names on them is because they are "corporate cards." True, the author says she has a reasonably sharp brain that is disengaged in the boyfriend's company "in favor of another set of organs entirely." But Anna is not unattractive and this descent into bimbo-ism stretches the imagination.
Yet overall, the writer pulls this intense story together. Tanenbaum is always engaging.

Another Riveting Tanenbaum Thriller
By Dave Deno
Butch and Marlene take us into the inner workings of a big city legal system with this gut-wrenching tale of child abuse and societal facades.
They both face cases that challenge their best detective skills and their lives.
The ending is particularly satisfying.
Immoral Certainty is another Tanenbaum winner!

From Publishers Weekly
Mouse and Mole "trusted each other completely, even with their deepest secrets." But when they spot a falling star, each is determined to find it and wish on it, and the friendship quickly disintegrates into a tango of mistrust. As summer ends, "Mole and Mouse grew lonely and miserable. They missed each other's company . They even missed the sad moments." Benjamin's (It Could Have Been Worse) tone veers into didacticism: "Anyway, we don't need a star. We have each other," Mouse concludes when a second "falling star" turns out to be a leaf. Bendall-Brunello (I Love You This Much) offsets this heavy-handedness with winning watercolors that emphasize the similarities between the two characters. Mouse and Mole, who think themselves at odds, not only look very much alike but wear nearly identical expressions as their feelings change from hope to animosity and sorrow to hope once again. Kids may also be intrigued by the endpapers, which show pencil studies for the color illustrations. Ages 3-6.

From School Library Journal
reSchool-K-Mole and Mouse do everything together until they see a falling star one evening. Mouse tells Mole that these stars are magic and can make all your wishes come true-if you can find one. This launches both of the characters on a search that gets more and more cutthroat as it continues, until finally they stop being friends. Of course, they soon realize that their relationship is more important than a star and end up lying on a grassy hill looking up at the starry sky, content to be together. The soft, uncluttered illustrations fit the oversized book well. While unremarkable in text and art, this is a gentle story that touches on a subject that can never be overemphasized.

Friends Forever....
By Roz Levine
"Mouse and Mole were the best of friends. They had fun together. They shared everything. They trusted each other completely, even with their deepest secrets. When one was sad or not feeling well, the other was always there to comfort him. That's how much they loved each other..." All was perfect, until the night they saw the falling star shoot across the sky. Then jealousy and suspicion raised its ugly head as the two good friends began to squabble over who the star belonged to, who saw it first, who would find it, and whose wish would come true. "The days rolled by, and summer was nearly over..." Mouse and Mole were sad and lonely. They missed each other and all the good times they had together..... A.H. Benjamin's gentle text is complemented by John Bendall-Brunello's charming and engaging illustrations, and together word and art send a simple message about the importance of friendship that won't be lost on even the youngest readers. With a clever, satisfying, happily-ever-after ending to set everything right again, Mouse, Mole, And The Falling Star is a sweet and heartwarming preschool crowd pleaser.

From Booklist
Six famous prayers and poems by Samuel Coleridge, Cecil Alexander, Christina Rossetti, and others, plus two selections from the Bible, are included in this charming board book for young children. The thick pages, gilt-edged to add a special brilliance, are filled with quaint pictures--rabbits and mice dressed in delicate frocks, wrapped in quilts, sipping tea, even pitching woo under a moon--that establish a warm mood that mirrors the feeling of poetry. These sentimental pictures also compensate for the language of some selections, which the youngest listeners may not find easy to understand. Each double-page spread has a border of pink roses adding sweetness to the moments captured by the art and words. An appealing book for children and adults who want to foster the faith and hopes of their children. Shelley Townsend-Hudson
