The Song of Six Birds, by Rene Deetlefs

When Lindiwe's mother first presents her with a flute, the young girl can hardly wait to play beautiful music on it. What a disappointment that the flute is empty and can only make a sound that causes the dog to howl! Fortunately, Lindiwe knows where to find music for her flute. She catches the trumpeting mahem of the crane, the bright tock-tocki-tock of the hornbill--even the soft doo-doo-doo of the shy rainbird. With the song of six birds filling her new flute, Lindiwe hurries home, gathering the people of her village with the irresistible tune that she plays.

Rene Deetlefs, one of South Africa's most beloved children's book authors, has given this story an authentic voice and a lively rhythm that make it perfect for reading aloud. The lyrical text is complemented by Lyn Gilbert's brilliantly colored paintings of a busy, loving community and a soulfully musical young girl who knows exactly how to capture the sweet melodies of her homeland.

From Publishers Weekly
The South African team paired for Tabu and the Dancing Elephants here presents a sliver of a story centering on a girl "in search of music for her flute." Strolling through her African village, Lindiwe asks six birds--a crowned crane, hornbill, rainbird, hoopoe, Paradise flycatcher and wood owl--to "share" their sounds with her. When each obliges, its signature call (reproduced phonetically, e.g., "Whoo-hu... whoo-hu-hu") enters her instrument. As the winged creatures follow her home, the child plays her flute and the birds "all made music while she ran." Oddly, while readers see speech balloons of the birds' utterances entering the flute, no pictorial representation of the sounds reappears even though the text claims that "the air was filled the music of Lindiwe's flute--and the song of six birds." Gilbert's unadorned, brightly hued pictures portray Lindiwe's fellow villagers as an obviously appreciative audience, but the narrative fails to foster a similar enthusiasm in readers. Ages 3-9. (Dec.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3-Lindiwe has a new flute that makes a dreadful noise when she blows into it. As she journeys through the South African countryside looking for music, she meets different people and six birds that share their sounds with her. The repetitive nature of the story and the language used create a natural pace for reading aloud. Children will enjoy imitating the rhythmic birdcalls as the narrative carries them along to a happy celebration when Lindiwe's music calls the others to dance and sing through the night. Gilbert's flat, folk-art illustrations are reminiscent of South African designs and perfectly complement the text. The black outlined images of Lindiwe and the other villagers dressed in bright reds and oranges are set off by background colors of green and brown. The vivid illustrations capture the child's supportive community and the typical activities in her small village. A charming story for group reading.

From Kirkus Reviews
Deetlefs (Tabu and the Dancing Elephants, 1995, etc.) pleasingly blends equal measure of cultural geography, a field guide to the birds of Africa, and the fancies of a young girl filling her flute with song. Lindiwe rises one morning in her African village to find a flute next to her bed, a gift from her mother. Eager to make it sing, she gives it a terrific blow and a dreadful noise comes out. It's clearly time for fine tuning; she roams the countryside to gather music. A crowned crane gives her a ``mahem mahem,'' and a hornbill contributes its ``tock tocki tock.'' The rainbird, the hoopoe, the paradise flycatcher, and the wood owl all tuck their calls into the flute, which subsequently powers an evening of spontaneous dance and revelry. As Lindiwe hunts her music, she encounters various members of her communityweavers, shepherd, medicine manwhich imparts to readers a vivid sense of everyday life in the village. Gilbert takes pains to illustrate that aspect of the book in closely observed landscapes and village scenes. A merry, heartening tale. (Picture book. 3-9) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. From Library Journal
The Amos 'n' Andy show was the most successful and most controversial radio and TV program ever produced about black people. From its inception in 1928 when two white men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll wrote, produced, and played the main characters, the program was attacked as being demeaning to blacks in characterizing them as lazy, shiftless, and objects of humorous scorn. The authors of this study are ambivalent in much of their commentary, pointing out that the long-running series was extraordinarily popular among all races well into the 1950s. At that point new racial attitudes spelled the end of Amos 'n' Andy as less stereotyped and more sophisticated shows such as I Spy and The Bill Cosby Show portrayed blacks more realistically. A good choice for public libraries. Samuel Simons, Memorial Hall Lib., Andover, Mass.

Interesting But Inadequate
By Mediaman
This somewhat incomplete look at the history of Amos 'n' Andy has some interesting aspects (quotes from an interview with Richard Correll and an episode guide with descriptions) but it just barely touches the surface of the program and its controversy. Instead it's one-third a history of black entertainment (going back to the early 1800's!), one-third the program's radio history and one-third about the TV show.

The writers toss out facts then fail to provide any perspective or explanation. So the radio show went from NBC to CBS to NBC to CBS--and after reading the book I still have no idea why. They also don't adequately address one of the main problems with the TV series--that Amos is barely on it! Why? We don't know. They don't even put a picture of Amos on the cover of this book! So there are lots of holes and the publication has a rushed feel to it, like it was poorly researched and not well edited.

Co-authored by Bart Andrews, who did a book on I Love Lucy, it's not very well written and gets some information wrong. For example, it claims when the television version started in 1951 that comedies were all done live and only dramas were filmed for TV, which is completely false. It also says Peoria is right by Rock Island (look at a map!) and claims that few radio shows successfully transitioned to TV (go back and check, guys, there are lots of them--including Lucy!). This, in addition to a lot of unnecessarily repetitive information and the same two or three publications quoted over and over, makes it a little frustrating to read.

It does a basic job of trying to raise the standard controversial issues regarding the series, even dissecting a couple episodes to prove that it was racist. However, it proves no such thing because the writers don't give enough examples and fail to do enough research. Every cast member quoted says it wasn't racist. Sometimes the writers say that the TV series was just entertainment like any other show that portrayed buffoonish characters but then they suddenly conclude the series probably was somewhat racist. They don't take the time to do the argument justice. An author of a book on Lucy should certainly understand how television in the 50s stereotyped every character. If these writers want to claim Amos 'n' Andy was racist, then they have to maintain that Lucy was sexist and anti-women, Make Room for Daddy was anti-Lebanese, etc.

So if you're looking for a book that helps explain the debate over the series in depth, this isn't it. If you want just a quick overview of the show's radio and TV history, then this might work.

A GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT
By BioReader
Bart Andrew's LUCY, RICKY, FRED AND ETHEL: The I Love Lucy Story, was such a detailed and wonderful record of that great series that I looked forward to similar treatment for the AMOS AND ANDY Show. What a disappointment. Except for a listing of all the filmed episodes, there is precious little about the 'behind the scenes,' and making of the series. I could care less about Correll and Freeman, the white guys that originally broadcast on radio with their awful immitations of what they thought Black people talked like. Most people never heard of them and they, rightfully, seem relegated to old radio's trash-bin. It was the magic and sheer artistry of the actual Black performers that did the TV show that took that material and made it their own. I know that AMOS AND ANDY has, and I suppose continues, to create controversy and rarely has a TV entertainment been so vilified and hounded. I can appreciate the feelings of those that look upon AMOS AND ANDY negatively. However, it was just down-right, all-out FUNNY and gave acting opportunities to a great cast of accomplished, professional comedy experts. I was hoping for a book dedicated to their expertise and analysis of their craft as actors. I'd like to have known the behind the scenes details: who designed the sets,
costumes, what financial terms did the actors receive, along with details about their careers and what happened to them. There is some of this, but precious little. A much better (if a bit long-winded) treatment of the 'social implications' of AMOS AND ANDY can be found in THE ADVENTURES OF AMOS 'N ANDY: A Social History of a American Phenonomen by Melvin Patrick Ely.

Holly Pond Hill: The Hugs and Kisses Contest, by Paul Kortepeter

When Oliver and Emily Boxwood can't agree on which child their mother, Victoria Rose, loves the most, they decide to hold a contest: Whoever receives the most hugs and kisses before the sun goes down is their mother's favorite child. While Emily's kind deeds are rewarded with many hugs and kisses, Oliver's attempts to win his mother's affections keep ending in disaster. In the end, however, Oliver and Emily learn that when it comes to their mother's love, there's no contest.

From Publishers Weekly
Wheeler and Kortepeter, who previously collaborated on Tea with Victoria Rose and The Happiest Season of All, create a valentine for parent and child, featuring the rabbit matron Victoria Rose Boxwood and her two children, Oliver and Emily. When sailor-suited Oliver becomes jealous of his mother's affection for his sister, Emily declares, "Whoever gets the most hugs and kisses from Momma before the sun goes down is her favorite child." And the contest begins. Emily has the perfect-child act down pat, but each attempt by Oliver to score points (and thus hugs and kisses) with his mother is comically thwarted: gathering peaches to make a cobbler, he falls out of a tree and sprains his cottontail. "I'm wounded, Mama," he whines, when a friendly rabbit doctor brings him home. Mama, the very picture of turn-of-the-century maternal devotion in her petticoat and bloomers, declares that both children are special. Wheeler's sentimental stylings may not be to everyone's taste, but her meticulous eye for detail and subtle visual verve rescue the pictures from preciousness. Likewise, Kortepeter's narrative glimmers with gentle wit (Emily is characterized by Oliver as "the hug thief"; and when he spots his mother giving her a kiss, "Suddenly it seemed to Oliver as if a dark cloud had crept into his blue sky"). This appealingly old-fashioned-feeling volume features French-fold pages and embossing both within the illustrations and along the margins. Ages 4-up.

From School Library Journal
reSchool-Kindergarten--A contest born out of jealousy is the subject of this book based on the Holly Pond Hill greeting-card line. Oliver, the youngest rabbit in the family, feels certain that his sister is getting all of their parents' attention. He challenges her to a contest in which the rabbit who receives the most hugs and kisses all day long will be clearly proven to be the favorite child. The siblings set out to win their mother's love by doing good deeds for her, but while Emily's efforts always turn out perfectly, Oliver's attempts constantly go awry. Finally, he falls from a ladder and injures himself, causing Emily to confess the scheme to their mother. Even though she says all the right things about loving them equally, Oliver is not satisfied and it seems that he will instigate a new plan the next day. This book is too much of everything-too long and stilted for its intended audience, too detailed in its illustrations, too saccharine, too cluttered. The poor page design includes text and illustration, plus a lilac flowered border and a separate embossed border. This attempt to turn a successful greeting-card line into a children's book is markedly unsuccessful.

Ages 4-6. You don't get much more adorable than Holly Pond Hill, the idyllic backdrop for a thriving cottage industry of greeting cards, figurines, fabrics, and exquisitely produced books. Just a peek at Holly Pond Hill, with rabbits and mice in Edwardian pinafores and pantaloons, and you're hooked. Wheeler's watercolors show glowing thatched cottages, well-tended gardens, curving lanes, and Tiffany lamps illuminating cozy overstuffed chintz sofas and chairs. The actual feel of the book is enticing, too--double-thick pages, with embossed borders and details invite small fingers to linger over the pictures. The story is just as sweet as the art, both interesting and uplifting: brother and sister rabbit challenge one another to see who can get the most hugs and kisses from their mother in one day. They learn that you can't compete for a mother's limitless love. Ahhhh. . . Connie Fletcher

Children always wonder if their mom loves their brother/sister more than themselves. This is a beautifully illustrated and lyrical story that shows how encompassing a mother's love really is!
Oliver and Emily have a contest to see who Victoria Rose, their mother, loves the most. And the outcome is not a big surprise to the reader but it is a lovely story!
This is one of my favorite books to read! I highly recommend this one to everyone!

This book is beautifully written & illustrated. Every child with a sibling will identify with this book--and so will their parents! It sends a great message, too. Best of all, "Hugs and Kisses" shows profound wit and characterization that's lacking in many modern kids' books.

Raccoons Are the Brightest People, by Sterling North

From dust jacket notes: "...The author, who has spent half a century feeding, photographing and observing raccoons, has devoted the last three years to writing this fascinating book and selecting from thousands of photographs the stunning pictures which document his text. It is Sterling's well-founded belief that the raccoon is one of the most intelligent species below the anthropoidal apes. Their 'language' ranges from thirteen to twenty meaningful sounds. Forrestal Laboratory, after extensive tests, has discovered that the raccoon has the most acute sense of hearing of any North American mammal. They are music lovers and have individual preferences among the recordings to which they listen intently. They can see in the dark, have a keen nose and delicate palate, and the most sensitive and prehensile hands, able to open any door, drawer or cupboard that is not locked with a key. They use public drinking fountains and also turn on faucets and showers (but seldom turn them off). They pick pockets of coins as thin as a dime, pull in fish-stringers hand over hand to rob the catch, switch stations on TV sets, blow automobile horns when confined in a car, and working in tandem can screw lids from mason jars...."

Raccoons and beavers and bears, oh my!
By Sandra Hubbard
Sterling North has written a very interesting, moving account of his interactions with raccoons and other local wildlife. The book has a number of black and white photos of animals, mostly raccoons, and the accounts of other people's interactions with raccoons, beavers, fawns, wolves, bears...

I originally found the book in my local library, and I enjoyed it so much that I am buying a copy. It is a mixture of information and a plea for peaceful co-existence. I learned a lot about raccoons from this book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning about raccoons, or who just wants an echo of a more peaceful time.

There is a man named named Sterling who lives with raccoons.
By A Customer
Sterling North and his family live in a place that has raccoons, a brook, a woods with big trees, foxes, and whippoorwills. Sterling and his family saw a mother raccoon named Moonlight with a bigger, duller child named Flora, and a smaller, darker, more shy child named Fauna. Moonlight taught her children important lessons like finding earthworms and eating wineberries. The book also has stories from other people who know raccoons.

As a preschool teacher who loves children's books I am always looking for beautifully illustrated stories
By emom
I bought this for the illustrations as I am a fan of Trina Schart Hyman's and wound up loving the poem just as well. It was so touching and poignant. As a preschool teacher who loves children's books I am always looking for beautifully illustrated stories, which this is but it is a poem for older children not for preschoolers. While I might read it to my class i feel it's subtleties will be lost as well as overall a bit over their heads. I did, however, give it to my 79 year old mother who said it resonated with her which comes as a mixture of sweetness and sadness. All in all, a beautiful book for anyone's library.

Old Age for Young Ones
By Lauren
Reading this book out loud has been a wonderful way to explain old age to my 3-almost-4 year old. It's a book that makes a happy/hurt and could cause grown-ups' eyes to leak, but in a good way. :)

Vintage-chic, East Coast transplant Samantha Rose would rather be reading Virginia Woolf than Variety. So when her uncle arranges a surprise summer internship at a hot film development company, Sam is not prepared for the Tinsel-town twist. From her spoiled room mate (her Beverly Hills-bred cousin, Kate), to the backstabbing poseurs at her company (ironically named 'Authentic Pictures'), everything about L.A. feels fake. And, although smart, self-protective Sam hates to admit it, it's all a bit intimidating. Will Sam realize her own Hollywood ending? Not before this girl in development is thrust into the spotlight and down a personal red carpet of genuine friendship, romance, and betrayal.

One of the best YA novels that people of all ages will love
By Madame Z
GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT is one of those books that brings you back and reminds you of what it feels like to be 18 and to have finally found a sense of self and then have it tested all over again, reminding you that you still have some growing pains to endure. This honest portrayal of one girl's journey is delivered with wit, empathy and insight into the human spirit. I highly recommend this book to anyone who knows what it feels like to fall in love, feel betrayed and find friendship in the unlikeliest of places.

Get to Know This Girl
By Little Willow
Girl in Development is a fish out of water story -- with the fish dressed in vintage designer dresses and swimming carefully in the murky waters of L.A.

When Samantha's uncle gets her an internship at a film development company, she appreciates the gesture, but it's not her dream job. She would rather curl up with a good book than hobnob with film stars. Not wanting to seem ungrateful, she accepts the job and flies across the country to spend the summer with an uncle and cousin she barely knows.

The book explores the relationships that develop that summer between Sam and those around her: Kate, her sophisticated and seemingly self-assured cousin; Kate's two best friends, Tatiana the television actress and Dylan the hypochondriac; and two boys at Sam's workplace, Matt Sullivan, who is slightly older and possibly interested in her, and Ross, who is slightly nerdy and hilariously blunt.

Roter has created characters that are realistic and relatable, rather than snotty and stereotypical. The main character is a sweet girl who has good intentions. Readers can sympathize with her sense of bewilderment when faced with a new job and new surroundings.

Though she is wealthy, Kate is not a material girl. The sassy older cousin has layers which are peeled and revealed as the story goes on. Though Kate is more world-weary and mature than Cher from Clueless, the two would definitely be friends.

Thankfully, Roter eschewed the obvious (and overdone) Pygmalion path. Kate never attempts to change Sam; rather, it is the unexpected friendship between the cousins that spurs changes in each of them -- changes for the better. Her leading ladies grow to accept one another.

Unlike some other books shelved in young adult fiction, the romance in this book is clean enough to appease parents and teachers. No eyebrows will be raised by this book. It will inspire gentle, knowing laughter instead.

In her debut novel, Jordan Roter has created a story that is, like her main characters, is fun and cute, sweet yet sophisticated. A 30-year-old reader will enjoy this book just as much as a 16-year-old will, and mothers and daughters can share this story. In other words, fans of Gilmore Girls need to pick up this book.

Girl in Development is not only likable, it is enjoyable. It is even more refreshing than the complicated coffee drinks Sam and Kate order, and just as sweet.

Dan from I Hate Camping and I Hate Company is back, with more insightful and hilarious things to say about his newest pet peeve. This time it's weddings, and it's Dan's father who's getting married. Who wouldn't hate it? Dan has never met his stepmom-to-be or her children--a four-year-old fireball who can't wait to have a big brother and a twelve-year-old girl who seems out to get him. Dan wants to make a good impression, but from the start of the wedding weekend, his best efforts backfire.

Readers will agonize with Dan over his humiliating goofs and laugh with him at the uproarious ways he begins to break down the chilly barriers between old family and new. As with I Hate Camping and I Hate Company, this is light, funny stuff with real poignancy and heart, which will speak to the conflicting feelings that inevitably accompany second marriages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-Dan's dad, who lives in Los Angeles, is remarrying, and Dan, who lives with his mother in San Francisco, is the best man. No matter how much he hates weddings, with all the kissing and hugging, this is one that he can't miss. However, he is uneasy about his father's marriage to a woman he has met only once, and about her two children, whom he's never met. Riley turns out to be an enthusiastic younger brother, but Hannah seems to hate Dan from the start. He wants the wedding to be just right, but he can't stop worrying that he's going to lose his dad to this new family once the wedding is over. The poor boy is so nervous that disaster strikes everywhere he goes. Petersen maintains the tension throughout the book, and even manages a believable truce between Hannah and Dan when the boy averts a wedding catastrophe. The author handles this touchy subject with lightness, humor, sympathy, and a minimum of sap. Many children will identify with Dan's worries, Riley's incessant talking, and Hannah's hostility. Cravath's black-and-white illustrations provide additional chuckles.

From Booklist
Dan, whose parents are divorced, despises weddings--from the itchy suits to the kiss-happy guests. This one promises something extra dreadful: it's his own father's wedding! Dad is marrying Joan and moving into her home with her children. Where is Dan going to fit in? Dan's play-by-play action--from spiders crawling out of pockets and up the groom's jacket to awkward first family meals (healthy food does not a happy hero make) is told in a breezy first-person narrative guaranteed to have young readers giggling and nodding their heads in empathy. The subject matter--a child's reaction to a parent's remarriage--is somewhat trite and treated rather superficially, but the book will still trigger discussion. Even without that, however, Dan's calamities provide easy-to-read entertainment, especially for children who have read I Hate Camping (1991) and I Hate Company (1994). Lynne Cravath's illustrations were not available in the galley. Karen Simonetti

All Better Now, by Emily Wing Smith

An honest and captivating memoir of the author’s childhood struggles as a result of a brain tumor, only discovered following a near-fatal car accident.

All her life, Emily has felt different from other kids. Between therapist visits, sudden uncontrollable bursts of anger, and unexplained episodes of dizziness and loss of coordination, things have always felt not right. For years, her only escape was through the stories she’d craft about herself and the world around her. But it isn’t until a near-fatal accident when she’s twelve years old that Emily and her family discover the truth: a grapefruit sized benign brain tumor at the base of her skull.

In turns candid, angry, and beautiful, Emily Wing Smith’s riveting memoir chronicles her struggles with both mental and physical disabilities during her childhood, the devastating accident that may have saved her life, and the means by which she coped with it all: writing.

“This incredible journey from an awkward childhood struggle through a brain tumor and near-fatal accident to published writer is heart-wrenching and inspiring. A must-read, especially for anyone who has ever felt like an outsider.”—James Dashner, #1 bestselling author of the The Maze Runner series

"An extraordinary memoir about her life on the outside and how she found her way in." —Booklist

"Smith unapologetically and honestly delivers all the messy details of her hard-won life and, without striving for sympathy, draws readers firmly to her side to applaud her developing successes." —Publishers Weekly

From School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up-In this memoir, Smith chronicles the psychological and physical problems she faced throughout her childhood, until, at age 12, she learned that a previously undiagnosed brain tumor was at the root of her problems. As a young girl, Smith attended the Children's Center, a place for troubled children to work out their issues through individual and group play. However, Smith didn't want to interact with others, preferring to reflect on her own thoughts and to figure out how to be "all better." She details her struggles with depression, anger, and the question of where she fit into the world. Smith eventually accepted headaches as part of her life, a condition that she called Woo-Head. As fate would have it, a horrific car accident saved her life: when she was examined, doctors discovered that she had a large tumor growing in the frontal lobe of her brain. Weaving in stories of abuse, disappointments, and successes, Smith creates captivating tales that are disturbing and beautiful, making it clear that her writing saved her life. VERDICT Those who feel different or unsure of how to navigate the awkwardness of youth will appreciate this poignant read.-Amy Caldera, Dripping Springs Middle School, Dripping Springs, TX\α(c) Copyright 2011. Not For Me
By Kaitlyn Abshire
I received a copy of this book from Penguin First Reads in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

All Better Now is a memoir that follows the life of a young girl with many physical and mental issues. Ever since she was very young, Emily has suffered with anxiety, constant headaches, poor eyesight, outbursts, and many other issues. When she is hit by a car, the doctors find that she has a tumor located in her brain. While Emily believes that the brain tumor was the real reason for all her issues, she soon learns that there are still obstacles she must learn to overcome.

Each chapter is structured as if the author plucked out an experience or memory from her life. Most of the experiences/memories were significant, whereas some of the experiences/memories seemed random. Clearly, the experiences/memories were not random, as the author took her time to include them in her book, but they could seem quite random to the reader.

This is an interesting read and I enjoyed watching all the obstacles that Emily overcame. However, I felt extremely underwhelmed when reading this story. Yes, this young child suffered with mental and physical challenges. Yes, this young child had quite a few horrific experiences that I wouldn’t wish on anyone, young or old. Yet I never connected with the author on an emotional level and I believe that is what leaves me feeling rather blasé about this book.

If this book interests you in the least bit, I suggest giving it a try. I am definitely in the minority when it comes to a lower rating on this book, as many other readers have enjoyed this book.

I loved this book
By T. Mayo
I loved this book! Emily Wing Smith takes us on a journey through her childhood and through her brain injury. This book shows the resiliency and determination of a child going through a hard time. What a miracle that her accident is what saved her. She truly is the "Thank God she got hit by a car girl." I highly recommend this book to adults and children alike, as we all struggle with fitting in, feeling lost, and finding hope.

Perfect for my toddler/preschooler!
By CheerMama
I bought this book and the others in the series (I believe there are 6 total). They're fantastic! I bought them to read to my 2.5 yr old before bed. We've read the whole original Winnie the Pooh, but at this age she really wants to start AND finish a story all in one sitting, which is pretty impossible with the full chapter book. I LOVE that these have so many of the same phrases, verbage, and cant as the original...just in condensed form. I wasn't looking for the "new" Winne the Pooh, or a simplified/dulled down version to read to a baby - I wanted the original stuff, just...shorter. That's exactly what I got!

The flavor of the original, edited for little ones
By DTK
When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

Small book for younger readers/listeners
By M. Lilliquist
Beautifully bound and illustrated, this little book is part of a series of 10 such Pooh books published by Dutton. Don't confuse these "storybooks" with the even smaller and abridged board-books; also, don't confuse these books with many other Pooh books, such as read-alongs or cassete tapes or Disney versions.
This little book is a near-exact reproduction of a Chapter One in the original book, Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne, with the original illustrations by Shephard enhanced by judicious watercoloring. All the charm of the original, in a perfect size for reading to littler kids, who can feel satisfied at having been read "the whole story." Also good for children just starting to read all by themselves.
