The shelter of his family's nest is only temporary, however, because the domesticated Millie, who lacks self-defense instincts, could endanger the warren. So the adventurous bunny returns to her hutch, only to find it secured for the night. Realizing that she wants to remain free, Millie hops back out into the dark yard, where Seventy-six has come looking for her. Together they make a new home in a flowery glade and raise bunnies of their own. Abloom with radiantly colored wild and cultivated flowers, the pages are exquisite bouquets through which field mice dart, butterflies flit, and endearing rabbits seek adventure and comfort together. Lovely idea; misleading conclusion

I was disappointed that _The Brave Little Bunny_, with its great illustrations and endearing characters, ended with the myth that domesticated rabbits are somehow "better off" in the wild. While Jennings hit the mark about the monotony of a rabbit's life in a cage (and handled the topic appropriately for young readers), her idyllic picture of Millie living happily ever after outdoors perpetuates the false idea that prompts so many folks to dump their unwanted pet Easter Bunnies in the wild every year. If Millie were portrayed as a puppy or a kitten, she would have sought out a loving and responsible human who would treat her as one of the family. Why does Jennings assume that Millie the rabbit does not have the same needs as any other "lost" pet? While the implications may go over a young child's head, responsible adults will shudder.
If you know a little person who loves bunny stories, I recommend _Little Cottontail_ by Carl Memling. Like _The Brave Little Bunny_ Memling's book is beautifully illustrated, uplifting, and is concerned with the choice of freedom over safety, and the importance of personal courage. The gently repetitive rhythm of the story and Little Cottontail's loving relationship with his mother give this book a cozy feel. Unlike Jennings' book, it shows that we must be prepared for the challenges of life, and accurately depicts the specific challenges in the life of a rabbit in the wild. Illustrator Lilian Obligado clearly spent much time observing wild rabbits: her illustrations reveal their behavior with accuracy and charm.

This is a very cute book that your child will love. It's about a lop eared bunny, living a cage, and she sees wild rabbits and wants to be one of them. It's a very happy story with a very happy ending.

Exiled From Earth is a marvelous science fiction. It takes place in the future on earth and outer space. The earth is over populated and the world is in chaos. The government wants to get rid of the top scientists and engineers for their work in genetic engineering. One engineer has managed to escape from the federal marshal who is frantically searching for him. He is chased across half of the United States of America. The remainder of the world scientists and engineers has all been captured. When they are captured they are sent to a livable space satellite in orbit of earth. The satellite is shaped like two giant wheels. Some people in the government want to them continue their work and research. When the government catches the engineer he will be sent to an island with other scientists to finish their work and research. The man in charge of the island wants to take over the earth, but no one else knows. He wants to bomb cities with gigantic bombs. The survivors will be mind controlled and become zombie slaves. The captured engineer found a creative way to solve the problem. This involves computer espionage and swat teams. The engineer is still sent to the satellite. At the end of the book the vote is decided on the satellite to travel to other planets. I recommend this book for ages 10 to 100. . Find out what happens in this agreeably awesome adventure.

This book is OK. Just OK, it's actually most interesting because it was written circa 1970, so you get the retro-futuristic look at everything. It's funny, especially the references to pocket phones (the author was quite intuitive), but wasn't a shining star in it's time, and is mediocre if you're not looking at the time period aspects of it. I wouldn't personally buy it myself, but finding it in my mom's bookshelf was pretty cool.

Fun Wolter's Book

I generally like all of Wolter's books and recommend them to anyone that is interested in hunting dogs in general or Labrador Retrievers specifically. He is always a fun read and this book is no different. Lots of neat history about the retriever breeds (all of them) and how/when they were created.

This time, however, the result is a little different--a travelogue of reputedly haunted places across America, complete with notes about location and, sometimes, a resource address or phone number. To make it even easier for travelers, the Cohens have organized the sites by region. The Northeast and the South seem to fare best, home to more than half of the 101 places described. Kids may be disappointed that the text is so matter-of-fact (no sensational tellings here), but the selection is very good. A family can visit Houdini's grave in New York, swing over to New Hampshire to see the site of the first alien abduction, spend time with Harry Truman's ghost in Missouri, then venture west to Roswell, New Mexico. Illustrations, mostly photos, are scattered throughout; finished ones weren't available at the time of this review. Plenty of appeal. A bibliography is appended. Stephanie Zvirin

Charming little book

I bought this book for my son who is 20 months old and LOVES books. He is getting too "old" for many of his board books but is too squirmy to sit through most story books so this is a wonderful transition book. It tells a nice little story and, unlike other cheesy lift-the-flap books, the illustrations are all Classic Pooh. The flaps really blend in with the rest of the illustrations so it does make for more of a challenge to lift them but my son thinks that is more fun. He also likes that there is a different Pooh character under each flap and that they are all together at the end.

Learn new rhymes

Obviously, I like some of the rhymes more than others, and it would be better if each page was devoted to only one rhyme (some are, some aren't). However, I appreciate the sturdy construction, the colorful illustrations, and the variety of rhymes that at least I had never heard. We read it every day during mealtime, and the fact that the pages are easy to turn and I have all the rhymes memorized helps with the task of reading when the book back is facing me and I'm holding a spoon in the other hand!

Terrific book for little ones!

I just ordered this book for my 16 month old daughter and she loves it! She can easily turn the pages by herself and the story is short and simple so I can read it to her and it holds her attention. This is a wonderful book.

I Love This - And I'm Not a Horse Person!

I'm not a horse person. I like them, as long as they don't bite me, and I enjoy the occasional walk on a well-beaten path on a very gentle animal. But I have never - and most likely will never - train, show, or own a horse or pony. Nonetheless, I loved this book set. It was utterly charming and hilarious. The humor was sharper than I expected; brilliant for adults, teens and children! There are some cartoons which may not be considered PC, like those related to fox-hunting - these were drawn in the 1950's or 60's I think. The drawings are brilliant, simply brilliant. While the horses are cartoons, their faces are utterly alive with expression! All of the animals and humans are so `real' in a comically unreal way! This set is out of print and expensive, so I'd recommend searching for the titles separately or looking around a little. A MUST for horse lovers (who do you think recommended this to me?) and anyone else who wants to have a good, happy laugh!

In an ingeniously designed, deftly executed lift-the-flap (and pull-the-tab) book, Zelinsky elaborates on the well-known and much-loved children's song. Not only do its wheels go round and round, but the bus here also has doors that open and shut, windshield wipers that move back and forth, and so on. The text consists of the lyrics of the song itself, but Zelinsky has neatly inserted a number of visual subplots that flesh out the story--one involving a boy with a boxful of adventurous kittens, another a motorcyclist and her runaway puppy, a third a young man with a guitar. The music and refrain are included on the back cover, and those unfamiliar with the song may well want to bone up in order to sing the book's praises to the most appropriate tune. Ages 2-8.

The wheels on the bus literally go 'round in this brilliantly designed and produced pop-up edition of the familiar participation song. The realistic special effects use pull-tabs plus a few lifted flaps; doors open and close, wipers swish, babies comically "WAAAH!," and mothers "Shh!" as the bus bounces its way "all over town," arriving at last at the Overtown Public Library in time for a musical program. A compressed, undulating perspective and swirling colors animate each vigorously busy scene. Figures are rendered with slightly exaggerated but individual gestures and expressions, and there's plenty of detail and byplay for readers to pick out. The song, with its repeated but contained gestures, is a perfect choice for a pop-up, for the art and engineering are woven together seamlessly, and the book will lose little of its appeal after the moving parts have run their race. A Timeless Treasure!

This is a very clever pop-up book. My granddaughter absolutely loves it! We sing the song as we turn the pages and work all of the moving (pop-up) parts. Our favorite page is the "babies on the bus", opening and closing their crying mouths. Super cute and fun! Because of all the fragile moving parts it's not a book that can be left alone with a toddler, but with proper guidance and supervision it can be loved and appreciated for years to come. In fact, I bought this book because my mother has one she bought in the 1990's that she still reads to grandchildren. It's a timeless treasure that is most definitely a keeper!

Love this book -- great moving parts, amusing subplots

We love this book. Little kids are pretty hard on it, but that just means they like it a lot. This is our third copy! There are several subplots (the kittens, the guitar concert, the lost dog, the spilled groceries) to add a bit of light drama to a book you'd think wouldn't have any story line at all.

About the Author
I grew up in a small town in Michigan where there wasn’t much for kids to do for fun except ride a bike down a dirt road to the local Dairy Queen, or better yet, to the public library. My two younger brothers and I didn’t have easy access to a swimming pool, movie theater or cable television, but we did have open fields, woods, marshland, old barns, and half-built houses to explore – places that really sparked our imaginations. One of my best friends lived on a sheep farm, and we used to conduct séances in the spooky atmosphere of the barn hayloft near her house (the memory of some of those activities may have influenced Gilda’s fascination with parapsychology and the occult in Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator). I spent long, humid summers reading every book our wonderful local librarian recommended: she had a talent for handing any young person a perfectly selected story.

Throughout junior high and high school, I spent a great deal of time playing the piano (I was one of those odd kids who actually liked piano lessons), and after competing in numerous music competitions, I attended the University of Michigan on a music scholarship. Literature won out over music, however, and I switched my major to English after my freshman year.

After completing a B.A. in English, I edited reference books for an educational publishing company in Detroit for several years, after which I returned to school to complete an M.F.A. in creative writing at American University (Washington, D.C.). After graduate school, I moved to England to work as a healthcare news journalist; I lived in Oxford for about two years, then moved to London to write for an online educational publication. The opportunity to travel and live in a variety of settings certainly furthered my development as a writer. I’ve also held numerous “odd jobs” -- piano player in a shopping mall, assembly line worker for General Motors, waitress, preschool teacher -- that have helped generate numerous ideas for characters and situations to explore in fiction.

The idea for the story of Gilda Joyce: Psychic Investigator first emerged while I was living in San Francisco and had recently been laid off from a “dot com” editorial position. With quite a bit of extra time on my hands, I found myself wandering into a store that sold antique typewriters, and walked out with the idea of an eccentric girl who’s fiercely attached to a “magic” typewriter (or a typewriter that she wishes were magic). I knew right away that this typewriter would represent the loss of someone very close – most likely a parent. As the story evolved and I got to know Gilda’s buoyant, life-affirming character, I realized that I wanted to write a story like the ones that had most moved me in my youth – a book that made me laugh while also addressing the reality of grief and loss as a part of life. I was also interested in a theory that people who lose a parent at a young age are sometimes more “driven” and willing to take risks than those who have the security of two parents (while others may respond in a nihilistic sense, by assuming that there’s no point in making a big effort in life since they, too, may die young). In a sense, Gilda and Juliet initially evolved as representations of these two very opposite responses to coping with death.

In the second book in the series, Gilda Joyce and the Ladies of the Lake, I drew upon my experience teaching English literature and creative writing at a Catholic girls’ school. In this novel, Gilda reluctantly agrees to attend an elite private school on scholarship. It isn’t long before she finds herself in the role of investigative reporter for the school newspaper, immersed in a mystery surrounding the drowning death of a student.

While there’s certainly much of myself in Gilda’s character, the Gilda Joyce novels are completely fictional stories. I often conduct research as part of my writing process—reading books about psychic techniques, interviewing people, visiting neighborhoods or buildings that serve as models for setting. Aspects of my own life inevitably find their way into the novels—childhood memories, places I’ve lived, knowledge from work experiences, character quirks loosely based on friends, relatives, and acquaintances.

In addition to developing my own craft, I enjoy visiting schools and conducting workshops designed to inspire reading and creative writing in young people. I live in Maryland, near Washington, DC with my husband Michael and three children—Max and the twins, Marcus and Genevieve.

Mom, this is the spookiest GILDA JOYCE yet...

...my son informed me midway through reading GILDA JOYCE AND THE BONES OF THE HOLY, Jennifer Allison's newest mystery in the psychic investigator series. This is a page turner for `tween readers; my son read the book in just two evenings. As I enjoy the GILDA JOYCE series and also like to share in what my kids are reading, I sat down with BONES after my son had finished. It's as full of action and fun as the other GILDA books, and yes, I'd agree it's the spookiest one yet. Set in Florida in the days leading up to Mrs. Joyce's remarriage, Allison weaves rich details about historic St. Augustine's folklore, archeological treasures, and local lore into a fast-paced ghost story. Gilda is as tart and smart as ever as she tracks the ghost haunting her future stepdad's historic, creepy house. As she makes new friends and uncovers secrets in her soon-to-be new home, Gilda also does some sleuthing of her own feelings about her mother's remarriage and the complications of becoming a new family. I'd recommend THE BONES OF THE HOLY as a suspenseful, fun read for `tweens. If, like me, you enjoy "book clubbing" with your kid, BONES will give you plenty of fun material to talk about with your child.

The Best I Ever Read

This was a really good book. I found myself at 1:00 AM coming out of a trance that could only be explained by this book. The theme is to blame for this lapse in time. This time, Gilda's mother has a fiance`... a strange fiance at that... who invites them down to florida for the wedding. However, Gilda doesn't really trust the her mom's choice of new husband and decides to investigate. A good book for all ages.

Somehow different than the others

I am a big fan of the Gilda Joyce books (my favorites probably being the first and the third) and I was really excited when I found this at Barnes and Noble! I stayed up late reading in bed and I was done in two days.
Gilda Joyce: The Bones of the Holy was definitely the creepiest one yet--(dead body under the kitchen floorboards?)--which isn't at all a bad thing, but I also felt it didn't have the same lighthearted and funny feel that the other books had. It didn't make me laugh out loud once, or even smile and think "Gilda is such a great character" like the others usually do, one of the reasons I love the series so much.
I enjoyed The Bones of the Holy, but it was in a different way then the others. It really just had a different feel to it, like it was from a whole other series.

If Jennifer Allison plans on writing more Gilda Joyce books, I sincerely hope she isn't losing her touch. It would be a great disappointment to me if more turned out like this one.
