Charles Knight: Megafauna Master

Anyone who has ever picked up an illustrated text dealing with dinosaurs is probably already familiar with Knight's work. He is the father of modern paleo-biological illustration.
Some of his images may be somewhat dated or anthropomorphic, arguably, but he is to this day a respected science illustrator. Stephen Jay Gould employed Knight's illustration of Cambrian marine fauna for the cover of his, at one time, definite work on the epoch "Wonderful Life."

Dinosaurs, Mammoths & Cavemen is the perfect cursory overview of Knight's career illustrating megafauna of the past and gives a decent and economical account of the man himself. But it's far from a biography and appropriately dedicates pages and pages solely to the presentation off Knight's illustrations. His images are lively, vivid and detailed. This book is a prized piece of my personal library both as a recreational distraction and as reference.

A wonderful book. Covers in beautiful detail the age of dinosaurs, prehistoric mammals and early man. Heavily illustrated with incredible plates. The original paintings of many of these images are in the American Museum of Natural History in New York, the Field Museum in Chicago, the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington, D. C., the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County in L.A. and many other museums around the world. They are reproduced brilliantly. It is a significant work covering these topics in terms that non-palentologists and dinosaur, prehistoric mammal and early man fans can appreciate. It is a book I am proud to own. It was available in both soft and hardcover. The softcover tends to come apart at the binding, so great care is needed in handling. The hardcover has no such problems. If you can find it, buy it!

PreSchool-Grade 3 - When the old woman who lived in a shoe decides she and her kids are too cramped, she calls on the local real-estate agent, Mama Goose, who suggests they move into Snow White and the seven dwarfs' dwelling - they're staying at Rapunzel's. And so this romp begins, as Sleeping Beauty, Jack and Jill, the three bears, and other fairy-tale characters play musical houses. At the end of the story, the old woman and her brood realize that there is no place like home and they all go back to their original abodes. Most of the rhymes are successful although a few are forced. For example, when Rumpelstiltskin is considering moving into Hansel and Gretel's treat-covered cottage, the text reads: " 'Take it!' cried Hansel, explaining their woes./ 'The sweets made us too fat to fit in our clothes.'/They jogged up and down, determined to shed/The pounds they had gained from the iced gingerbread." The illustrations are filled with delightful detail and humor such as the dish and the spoon running around in a scene in which they aren't even mentioned. There are lots of bright colors, varying perspectives, and different styles of costumes on the characters. As in the original, the shoe is too small, so Mama Goose finds the family some new digs in Snow White's home. The rhyming text describes how Snow White left to live with Rapunzel, who has rented a room from a gnome, Rumpelstiltskin, who is trying to spin her hair into gold. He leaves and winds up with Hansel and Gretel, now obese from eating their candy cottage. The story continues with cameos by a host of other fairy-tale characters. Lighthearted and inventive, the jaunty text bounces along, although the thread of the moving houses story, especially when Mama Goose pops in and out, doesn't always follow through. That said, children won't care much; they'll be delighted to see old friends in new situations. With candy colors, unusual perspectives, and characters who look like cousins to wooden dolls, this will be fun to look at and listen to. Ilene Cooper

Great new spin on classic characters - parents will like it too!

I was coordinating 'Family Reading Night' at my local library. We decided to do a Bedtime Story theme and hired someone to play Mother Goose. We bought this book and read it to the kids when we broke into storytime/snack/craft groups. They liked it and the parents thought it was pretty cute too. We gave one copy away and bought one for the library. We have sinced check it out a few times and my kids always enjoy it. Since a Kindergarten teacher told me during the planning that she likes reading Nursery rhymes to youngsters, I have tried to read them to my kids from time to time. So they are somewhat familiar w/ the characters re-tooled in this book.

A favorite in our house

Got this book as a gift when my son was born. He is 2.5 now and I think I enjoy reading this more than he does. It is cleverly written with the nursery rhymes interlinking. My 5.5 year old niece came to visit, from Ireland, and she requested it be read to her every night at bedtime. I am ordering her a copy to send her for her birthday.

Terrific!

This is one of my favorite books of my collection. Eliot Porter is widely known for his landscape images and his work with the Sierra Club, but I think his bird pictures don't get as much attention as they should. Reading his autobiography, he says that birds were a passion of his since he was very young. This passion lasted throughout his life and he made pictures of birds as much as he could. These images capture not only birds in their natural surroundings, but capture the beauty and wonder Porter had for these creatures. The photographer went at great lengths to set up the frame and lights for these, they're truly amazing. Definitely worth picking up if you're a fan of his work.

Eliot Porter's contribution to the photography of birds is immense for he photographs them in their "front yards" and in their "homes," we see birds and their environment as one piece, and it doesn't take much to realize that we need to protect all of it in order to preserve the birds. And the photographs are phenomenal. A rare find this book.

Milne, his family, his professional life, the genesis of ideas and characters in the Pooh stories and poems, and the books' impact on the lives of Milne and his son. This tribute by Pooh's original U.S. publisher is colorfully illustrated with drawings and paintings from various editions of the books as well as many photos of the Milnes, Web sites related to the books, and Pooh merchandise, such as bookends and board games, available as early as the 1930s. A magnificent, timely tribute.

This lovely publication commemorates the 75th anniversary of the publication of "Winnie-the-Pooh." It's not a storybook -- it's a sort of "biography" of Winnie-the-Pooh, the Milne family, and Ernest Shepard. The book has lots of interesting trivia for Pooh-ophiles like me and lots of quotes from the Milne stories and verse, as well as beautiful prints of some of the well-known and lesser-known Shepard illustrations. I'm not sure why the book was designed as oversize. This is a lovely, well done book that's going to have a permanent place on my shelf next to my beloved Pooh books. I love it.

A light, enjoyable read. Penny moves to small town Hog's Hollow from NYC with her mother when her parents separate. Like any new kid, Penny is trying to find her place in a new town and new school. She very quickly finds that her place is NOT with the popular girls, led by Charity. A little cupcake accident at Charity's birthday party and a lifelong grudge between their mothers makes Penny the target of the local mean girls. Their little stunts are pretty amateur and fun to read - a locker full of pennies, dead fish in locker, etc. Her start in Hog's Hollow is pretty miserable. Thankfully, Penny does find a place in town. She loves working in her mom's new cupcake shop, has a close relationship with her grandmother, makes a great friend in Tally, and meets Marcus, the cute troubled boy.

Penny is a very normal girl. She doesn't have the sophistication that many books ascribe to girls from NYC. I like her normalness. She's timid but not too much; an obedient daughter but sneaky enough to investigate her parents' secrets; a good friend but unwilling to share her troubles or feelings with anyone. I loved Tally - Penny's blue-hair, artsy, animal-lover best friend. I loved her creative way of getting back at charity, her devotion to the animals at ARK, her willingness to share her problems with Penny, how she's not afraid of what people think of her. Markus is a great love interest too. Cute, smart, nice, and funny, but also struggling with his family's past.

The summary makes a big deal over a "choice" that Penny has to make regarding her family. I thought the big "to-do" was rather silly. This book is really about Penny growing up, making new friends, and adjusting to a new life. Her family's troubles seemed more like an excuse for a plot point than anything else. It was the least important part of the book for me.

All in all, this is a thoroughly pleasant read. It's nothing to write home about - in fact, two days after finishing it, I'm having some trouble remembering the book. But if you're looking for a light, enjoyable read, The Cupcake Queen certainly fits the bill.

I love Hog's Hollow!

When I finished THE CUPCAKE QUEEN by Heather Hepler, my first thought is that the cover is slightly misleading. But not in a bad way. You can look at the cover and think you'll be getting a cute, fun story but this book has a lot more substance to it. While it was an adorable quick read, it dealt with some issues that not only teenagers can relate to, but also others as well--a child's relationship with their parents. The main characters all had problem with their problems they had to deal with, such as losing a parent, separating parents, or being abandoned by one. It made the book more emotional than I was expecting, and I felt the author did a good job of letting me experience Penny's turmoil with her parents.

I liked Penny's narration. She had incredibly insightful and funny things to say about her life in Hog's Hollow, such as "If someone found out they only had one day to live, they should totally move to Hog's Hollow, because here every day feels like an eternity" (56). Another of my favorite lines was "...I think about the problem with running from your trouble . The problem is in the stopping. The whole time you think you're getting away from everything, the trouble is running like mad, too, trying to catch up with you. And it doesn't slow down when you do--it keeps on sprinting. So when trouble finally reaches you, it hits you hard" (107). There are other passages in the story that I really liked but I won't give them all away.

Even though I found the beginning a little slow, it picks up and becomes more intriguing. I continued to read the story because I came to care what happened to Penny, and when I closed the book, I was happy for her, which is always a great feeling to have at the end of a novel.

Touches On Many Important Teen Issues

Tackling issues of separation, divorce, being the new kid at school, and teen love, Heather Hepler's novel seems to have a little bit of everything. We see the mean girl scenario play out in Penny's experiences at school, but on the other hand, we also see young love blossom before our eyes. This small little young adult novel seems to have a little bit of everything in a teen's life.

Although the cover is what initially drew me to pick up this small book, the cupcakes and bakery make up a very small part of the story. Hepler draws on real-life situations that teens face to flesh out the story in the book. For instance, the first day of school scene and encounter with the school secretary are really well done. (In fact, I shared that chapter with the students in my Popular Fiction course.) The way the author depicts how Penny feels, and what she sees, are really smart. To say that Penny is uncomfortable and feeling out of place on that first day, is an understatement.

Not all the scenes in the book pop out as much as that first day of school, but there are many other memorable moments that feel close to what teenagers feel and consider important. Penny worries about her family, about her position at school, and about the boy she finds herself crushing over. She isn't one of those characters that gushes, ad nauseum about how she feels about her crush, but you can sense how much she wants to be noticed. In short, you really feel for her and want her to be happy.

While simple in its themes and ideas, The Cupcake Queen was a sweet, simple read. The issues hit on in the book are familiar, yet vital to most teens, and I can see many readers connecting to Penny. Overall, I found the story to be an easy read, but one I would recommend to many of my own students.

I love this book

I'm a big fan of both the original Knight Rider series and the short lived Team Knight Rider(TKR) series. I saw the episode this book is based on, and it was cool. The book was even better. It covered stuff that wasn't in the episode. I hope to see the Knight Rider series back on T.V. soon.

Superb story. A true page turner.

What an engrossing story. Mr. Green has struck the perfect tone for the suspenseful drama that is Looking for Alaska. Such wonderful characters in the backdrop of a private boarding school located in Alabama. The "Alaska" portion of the title is the name a female member of the "clique" that all the boys adore from a distance. She's whimsical, spontaneous, playful, dark, enigmatic and just a joy to be around.

Green develops each character through their antics and each adds something to the group and the story that has you turning pages furiously. It's a well worn phrase but I honestly couldn't put it down.

For those who've read the book, the tragedy that occurs some two thirds through truly took the wind out of me. I was affected so much I didn't want to finish the book purely out of protest. However, similar to the movie "Psycho" where our heroin was "offed" the book, like the movie, continued on to be just as intriguing.

Excellent work Mr. Green.

Not my cuppa tea

In this book, John Green gives us Alaska Young an alcoholic, superficial, chain smoking, narcissist whose main goal in life seems to be to play silly pointless pranks on her fellow high school students. We are reminded over and over how beautiful and “hot” she is, and I suppose these qualities are meant to excuse her other failings. The book is divided into two parts: BEFORE Ms. Young is killed in an automobile accident/suicide and AFTER the unfortunate event. Personally, I found Alaska completely unsympathetic, and therefore I couldn’t relate to the sobbing and carrying on in the second half of the book engaged in my everyone who knew her.

Mr. Green is capable of creating nuanced and sympathetic female characters, such as Hazel Grace Lancaster who appears in THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, a far, far better book. I realize that LOOKING FOR ALASKA is an earlier work and the author was still working out some major themes, so I've cut him some slack for that. Overall, though, I think the book is unsuccessful.

Made a Lasting Impact

In this novel Looking for Alaska we get a glimpse of John Green's life from when he was in high school at Indian Springs School in Birmingham, AL. An incident involving a student similar to what happened in Looking for Alaska actually occurred at Indian Springs School.

I loved this book for several reasons. I grew up in a tiny community around an hour and a half from Birmingham, AL. There are many things that I could relate to in this book. It is true, no matter where you are from, Florida, Texas, the Midwest, etc., nothing... nothing ever prepares you for the heat of Alabama. Not only the heat but the humidity. He was right in saying that when May starts you can look for 6 months of summer. Another I laughed at was the fact he had fried okra and that was his first foray into the beloved fried vegetables. We can fry anything here and make it delicious. I also loved that one of the main characters was from New Hope. I taught an elementary school about 5 miles from New Hope. So that character would have either attended my elementary school or New Hope Elementary. Pretty awesome, huh?

This was a great book. One that shows people coming into their own after, for example, the main character struggles with friendships and learns to make and be accepted by true friends. He is always searching for The Great Perhaps. Isn't that what we are all searching for? The Great Possibility. As a "grown-up" I am still searching for the same thing. I do not know if that search ever truly ends. I have religion. I am a Christian, and I know my eternity, and I know that ultimate great end. The not "perhaps," but the great certainty, but I am searching for The Great Possibility while I am living here in my earthly home. Is it mission work? Is it reaching out to my community here in Auburn? Or is it simply raising a family to the best of my abilities. Creating someone else who will go on to figure out their own Great Perhaps.

This book made you think, no matter your age. It all has something that we can relate to individually. Making friends (no matter your age). First real love, or what we imagine as love. Loving and losing. Realizing that while our time here is short, many of us can be forgotten in the end. It is how you live your life that makes you live on forever.

This is not your typical review. I am not telling about the story, the people, or anything entertaining. I am telling you how this book affected me personally. That while I am not the original age demographic, this is a book that can be relatable to anyone no matter what your age. It was a coming-of-age novel for teens, but also for this adult. It made me think, what would be my lasting impact on this earth? In this state? In this town? In my church? In my family?

Bolan Takes His War to Miami

When Miami Massacre was first published in 1970, it is the waning days of the Age of Aquarius and men are returning from Vietnam, finding that there are other wars to fight just as tough. Bolan, earlier in the series ("War Against The Mafia"), returns home to Los Angeles to find the Mafia has ruined his family, driven them to despair, suicide, and more. Known as " the Executioner," Bolan declares war on all the tough guys the Mafia can muster. Thus, begins one of the great Men's Adventure series of the seventies. Something like a Dirty Harry movie or a later hero The Rock taking on a whole crew of bad guys by his lonesome in Walking Tall, Mack Bolan is the one-man take-no-prisoners rescue-damsels-in-distress guy you all want to be.

Action is the name of the game in a Mack Bolan story, not philosophical niceties. Bolan takes the war to the Mafia bosses in Phoenix and Miami, attacking them wherever he can find them. On the way, he enlists the help of Cuban rebels and a Valkyrie warrior, Margarita.

If you are looking for intense action from start to finish, you'll never go wrong with any of the books in this series and certainly not this one.

I am not sure Pendleton was a big football fan. Bolan is going to run a 'power sweep up the middle' to get out of Phoenix.

Pretty powerful, anyway, he kills half a dozen mafiosi or so in the first 3 pages.

In the process he learns of a meeting of all the mafia head honchos
in Miami, and decides that will be a good place to do some hunting.

The mafia are pretty sure he is coming, and put a watch on all the
airports. He sneaks past, though, and has a private plane courier a
package to his first target, with a marksman's medal in it!

Via a disguise and interrogation of a call girl he finds a list of
guys to take out in the first hotel, and does so. Staying too long, he
escapes with the help of a Cuban rebel, who is a bellman.

He runs into Leo Turrin and Brognola at one time, who feed him some
info, helps a cop, and sets up his assault on the 3 bases the mafia
have set up in. They have called in their enforcer family, the
Taliferos, to finally deal with Bolan. Their plan is to group them
together more, rather than leaving them dispersed.

So, The Executioner loads up with high explosive shells and starts
firing! After slaughtering a lot of them, he is under heavy fire and
Talifero attack, but again gains end from his new Cuban rebel friends.

They drop him off at a music festival full of hippies! Peaceniks or
not, topless girls are good for recovering from wounds, it appears.

I think Bolan should be required to tell any woman he comes in contact with that they are putting themselves in grave danger if they decide to spend any time with him.

The opening action scene, the action scene at the "model's" house and the action scene at the first hotel he attacks were all pretty cool. The car chase and shootout after leaving the "model's" house was another example of "don't mess with Bolan's friends!!".

I thought the final shootout was anti-climactic and kind of boring. i.e. Bolan sneaks up to a hotel and blows everyone up with an M203 grenade launcher. He then hops on an old converted PT boat and blows up a yacht with a mounted belt-fed grenade launcher. It only takes a few pages and is very sterile.

After all of the hype leading up to their introduction, I was really hoping the Talifero brothers were going to be a serious threat to Bolan. But that also was a let down and they ended up playing a very small part in the story.

But, even with it's shortcomings I enjoyed the book.
