A childhood favorite in Kindle form
By Darren Harrison
I grew up reading the Doctor Who novelizations and have fond memories of this one in particular. This was the days before the dawn of videos and I imagined the scenes in my head as I read this cleverly woven story that saw guerilla warriors travelng from the future to disrupt a peace conference and thereby unwittingly help the Daleks. When I finally saw the actual serial years later I felt somewhat let down because the cash strapped BBC was unable to compete with my imagination. I was pleased to discover that the Kindle included all the original illustrations from the Target paperback.

Excellent. A masterpeice of the battle between good and evil
By A Customer
I found this book an excellent story, one that should go down in history as a classic. It covers not only obvious evil (the Daleks), but an evil emerging that exxceeds even that of the Daleks themselves -- the 22nd century mercenaries, whose plan it is to destroy the beginning of their struggle 200 years back but actually bring it upon themselves

fair beginning
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
The book was not my introduction to Doctor Who but seeing the video in a catalog clarified for me just how much I had missed the Doctor. This is a good introduction to the Doctor, his principal enemy the Daleks, and the subtlly intellectual nature of the Doctor Who series. Highly recommended.

The famous painted ladies...
By HMS Warspite
Among the attractions of the City of San Francisco is its well-preserved collection of Victorian-style houses, built between the California Gold Rush and the end of the 19th Century. These beautiful houses survived the great earthquake of 1906 and several generations of urban renewal, thanks to the care of their owners and more lately, a desire by the city to preserve them. The picture book "Painted Ladies" is a celebration of these homes. It offers a collection of excellent color photographs by Morley Baer capturing their distinctly colorful exteriors, with commentary and notes by Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen. Included are street addresses and some minimal history of individual homes. This book has gone through a number of editions, and is highly recommended as a souvenir for fans of these beautiful homes.

Royko at his Best
By K.A.Goldberg
Chicago columnist Mike Royko (1932-1997) was practically an addiction for many of his newspaper readers. Royko could be funny, satiric, sympathetic, self-deprecating, angry and irreverent - often in the same column. He believed in fair play, and stood up for the abused citizen and the little guy. Some say that Royko defined Chicago as the voice of the average man; middle class but burdened by taxes, job stress, family pressures, plus worries about health and crime. Sometimes Royko invoked his alter ego Slats Grobnik to make strong points, and he often poked fun at blowhard politicians and arrogant bureaucrats. I particularly enjoyed his columns about an 83-year old man who refused to exit a bus until the driver refunded his quarter, his successful attack on the Veteran's Administration for brushing off a disabled veteran, and his amusing reply to an angry letter from Frank Sinatra.

This particular compilation is of daily columns he wrote for the Chicago Daily News and Chicago Sun-Times from 1973-1982. Readers might like several other Royko books, including "One More Time," "Slats Grobnik and Other Friends," and "Dr. Kookie, You're Right!"

The friendship between Mike Royko and Studs Terkel.
By manna22@hotmail.com
I rememeber when Mike Royko died Terry Gross of National Public Radio replayed an interview she did with Mike and he told a wonderful story about one of his best friends, Studs Terkel -- the man who wrote the Intro to this book.
As Mike tells it: it seems as though one day Studs was walking home and he was mugged. And the guy doing the mugging all of a sudden RECOGNIZES Studs Terkel! And Studs being an oral historian, par excellence, starts talking to the guy!
One could only imagine the inquisitiveness of someone like Studs Terkel. ... "Where are you from?" ... "How did you come to be a mugger?" ... "Could you describe the alienation that drove you to a life of crime?"
I can't remember if Mike said that Studs pulled out his ubiquitous tape recorder, but it must have been quite a moment.
Mike Royko and Studs Terkel -- two American originals! Two boats on the River of Redeeming Grace.

Legacy of a Fourth Estate Guard Dog
By A Customer
Mike Royko died on my 37th birthday of a brain aneurysm, at age 64. His was journalism in the finest tradition - and this anthology of articles proves it well.

Mike Royko was a journalist's journalist, and a guard dog of the common man and his liberty. His
anthology shows us that it's possible to be both hardbitten and gruff without losing compassion, possible to be humorous yet cynical in the same breath, and possible to guard the freedoms of all who your written word reaches without becoming corrupted by the power that guardianship creates.

This book is the legacy of a Guard Dog who protected the reputation of the Fourth Estate and the common man's rights with unfailing vigor, unswerving courage and indefatigable tenacity. Royko's breed of Guard Dog is dying out; but we can take comfort that his legacy to the common man - the articles and Pulitzer-Prize-winning style evident in this work - are eternal, and live on.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Perrault's clever Puss is back, but unlike last year's retelling (Farrar, 1990) by Malcolm Arthur, with Caldecott Honor illustrations by Fred Marcellino, there's nothing in Haley's version to get excited about. Her text, while following Perrault's story line fairly well, descends once too often into too-cute dialogue ("Oh Great and Terrible Wizardness," Puss says to an ogre named Moustaphus) and has a gratuitously tagged-on footnote concerning "The Paw Law," created by the old King out of gratitude to Puss. Haley's illustrations are the real disappointment, though; they are garishly colored and inconsistent in execution. Too often they have a rough, unfinished look that is both disconcerting and unsatisfying. Libraries needing additional copies of this tale would do well to purchase more of Arthur and Marcellino's stunning book. --Linda Boyles, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

From Kirkus Reviews
Still another ``Puss,'' this one by a Caldecott winner whose free retelling is full of energy and humor and whose vibrant illustrations, appropriately set in 17th-century France, are-- like the original story--a witty blend of satire and romance. Livelier but less formal and less elegant than Marcellino's 1991 Caldecott Honor book; here's a chance for the kids to make constructive comparisons. From Publishers Weekly
Christopher Robin returns from boarding school (80 years later) in this authorized but largely forgettable third volume of stories about Pooh, Piglet and the denizens of Milne's famous forest. Missing is the charm of the first book, mediated by an adult narrator creating a tableau for his child's imaginative play with a coterie of stuffed friends. Like the first books, there are 10 stories, but they are aged up to reflect Christopher's new interests—the play here involves a spelling bee, cricket, the creation of a school, the use of a thesaurus, atlas, dictionary, etc. A new character, Lottie the Otter, joins Rabbit and Owl to make a trio of the sanctimonious. Even saintly Kanga—Kanga!—loses her patience with Roo. There are a few inspired moments, including Rabbit's ill-conceived plan to lure his Friends and Relations to participate in a census using carrots and shortbread. (Rabbit also gets the best line: “Happy may be all very well, Eeyore, but it doesn't butter any parsnips.”) Burgess's illustrations are serviceable and resemble the originals, but, again, topping Shepard's originals proves a tough act to follow. All ages. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 1–4—Eighty years after the publication of the original "Winnie the Pooh" stories, this authorized sequel returns readers to the familiar characters and locales. Christopher Robin, on holiday from school, rejoins Pooh, timid Piglet, bouncy Tigger, patient Kanga, and his other friends for a summer full of adventure. In 10 stories, the friends put on a spelling bee, conduct a census, search for disappearing bees, start a school, and host a harvest festival. During a drought, they also meet a new resident of the forest, Lottie, an otter who is both forgetful and obsessed with etiquette. Another chapter, which describes a cricket match, may be more challenging for American readers. Fans of Pooh will recognize many elements: Pooh's hums, the animals' creative spelling, Piglet's fear of Heffalumps, and the maps on the endpapers. What's different is Christopher Robin; a year older, he seems less innocent, more in the role of an older sibling than a playmate. In addition, most members of the large cast of characters appear in each chapter, which feels a bit overwhelming. The writing is warm and humorous, though it doesn't quite match the charm and whimsy of the originals. Burgess's watercolor illustrations, on the other hand, are quite reminiscent of Shepard's. Pooh purists may find fault, but the book will likely be popular with many young readers and their parents.—Jackie Partch, Multnomah County Library, Portland, OR

The Magic is Gone
By The Palliator
One would think that an official Winnie-the-Pooh sequel, approved by the A.A. Milne estate, would be a respectful and authentic, if light, sequel to the original Winnie-the-Pooh books.
They would be wrong.
The first chapter is strong, with Christopher Robin returning to the Hundred Acre Wood in the summer break between sessions of boarding school. But Christopher Robin is not the same, and therein lies a major problem of the book. The charm of the earlier Pooh books was that they were so innocent, each chapter an escapist outing into a world that had no ties to the real one. But many of the stories in the book (including a Spelling Bee that is ultimately cancelled and an attempt to start a school)feel like overly mature invasions from outside of the Hundred Acre Wood that ruin the integrity of the book.
Speaking of an invader, a new chararcter, Lottie the Otter, is introduced. She is fine as a character (if overly predictable- haughty but forgetful), but she is not a really well-planned addition to the story, and the end result comes across as what she is- an addition to the Hundred Acre Wood by someone who certainly didn't write the first two books.
(The next paragraph describes the ending of the story, so skip to the next paragraph if you want to save it for yourself.)
In the end, Christopher Robin leaves at the end of the summer to go back to school. This could be a powerful ending where Christopher Robin says he will try to come back but isn't sure, but ends up in a "Mary Poppins" type situation, where the story ends by Pooh composing a poem wondering if Christopher Robin will come back.
The wording of the story is only slightly like the original story, and the poems fall flat. Little in the stories is really original, and a story about a drought feels hackneyed on arrival due to the fact it is invented purely to make Lottie the Otter have something to do.
To be fair, the story does have some inspired moments. (The first chapter is authentic, and Lottie does have a few funny quotes). But in the end, the book feels like an authorized sequel by A.A. Milne's estate, and not really like a book by A.A. Milne.
The witty wordplay and childlike innocence of the original stories aren't present, or not in sufficient amounts to warrant buying the story. Christopher Robin and his friends were better off as at the end of the second Pooh book, "The House at Pooh Corner".

NOT WORTH EVEN ONE STAR
By Mark Malamud
I would have loved to love this book. Though I've always been content with the ending Milne gave us eighty years ago, I was curious to see how someone might try to pick up the story.

I'll be brief.

Return to the Hundred Acre Wood by David Benedictus is DREADFUL. Not only does it fail to capture the original spirit, but it tries to update the "maturity" of the narrative -- throwing in adolescent identifiers, like Royal Doulton and Bournemouth and Edinburgh Castle and "household management" and "thesaurus" -- as if to suggest the stories are being told to (or created by?) an older Christopher Robin. It doesn't work. Nor does each chapter's laundry list of character action, as if each animal in the forest were a prima donna movie star, counting lines and demanding a larger part in the story. Do nearly all the characters need to be in nearly all the stories? No. Do they need to speak so much? No. No, no, no. And as for Pooh's "hums" -- well, for anyone who ever loved H. Fraser-Simson's musical interpretations of Milne's poetry, I can only warn you that there is absolutely no lyrical magic to be found between the covers of this tome.

OK, now I can tell I'm just getting grouchy, and I said I'd be brief. So here it is: the sad truth is that this book is *incredibly* boring. Milne's short and sweet has been turned into long and wearisome. I found my eyes drooping as I turned each page.

AVOID.

(The illustrations by Mark Burgess aren't bad.)

Simply Wonderful
By Pummanuel
I am in the process of building up my 4-year-old daughter's library and is in the search for classics with coloured illustrations. I wanted to get Winnie the Pooh for some time but either

(1) it's an incomplete collection or
(2) it's a complete collection but bundled together weighing more than 4 pounds or
(3) it's a complete collection, divided into 4 volumes but with black & white illustrations.

This book fulfills all of my requirements - complete collection, light enough for a child to hold and carry about, and comes with beautiful coloured illustrations. To my delight, the paper is of very good quality.

I bought it @ $33 when there was a special promotion, so I found it a REAL value-for-money.

A must-have childrens' classic
By Cara
These are very beautiful books with color added to the original black sketch illustrations. They are wonderfully reproduced on high-quality thick, bright white paper. These classic children's books are for an older child than the disney books are marketed toward. My daughter just turned 7, and we are reading them all at bedtime every night. She really looks forward to hearing these stories. She is old enough to catch all the humor, which really is geared toward a child about her age. My father read them to me at about 7, as well. It's nice to have some children's stories from a simpler time to share together-- tales that do not espouse the modern emphasis on consumerism and early advanced sexuality. I highly recommend these books. Unfortunately, mine came with remainder marks, and I would have paid more to have a set without those as we will probably save these books. I wish the seller would have noted that in the description.

These are a set of five Winnie the Pooh books - Four written by A.A. Milne and one sequel "Return to the Hundred Acre Wood." It seems it has the blessings of the Pooh Properties Trust. Purists may not appreciate this sequel. To me, it tries, but doesn't completely work.
I bought this set for the rest of the books at a bargain price and am happy with the quality of book, page and print. And yes, for the love of Winne-ther-Pooh and friends.

Amazon.com Review
Life in the wilderness has just become a lot thornier for young Sam Gribley. For the last two years he's been living in a hollowed-out tree in the Catskill Mountains, hunting and gathering his food supply and befriending the critters in his "neighborhood." Sam's peaceful existence is abruptly shattered when an environmental conservation officer confiscates his peregrine falcon, Frightful. To make matters worse, Sam's sister Alice, who has been living with him for the past year, has disappeared. This double blow quickly puts Sam on the trail to the far side of his mountain, pursuing a multifaceted mystery that, ultimately, will force him to make the biggest decision of his life.

Thirty years after the publication of her Newbery Honor Book, My Side of the Mountain, Jean Craighead George rewarded her many fans with an exciting sequel. This remarkable author of over 80 books and recipient of more than 20 literary awards (including the Newbery Medal for Julie of the Wolves) is a passionate advocate for the environment. Her knack for naturalist writing that crackles with life will have readers of all ages chomping at the bit for the third novel in her trilogy, Frightful's Mountain. (Ages 9 to 12) --Emilie Coulter

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of My Side of the Mountain will be delighted to find that Sam Gribley still lives in a hollow tree with Frightful, his faithful falcon. Sam has neighbors now: his sister Alice lives in a nearby treehouse and his old friend Bando has bought a nearby cabin. Sam's summer plans are disrupted when a conservation officer accuses him of harboring an endangered species and confiscates Frightful. Sam is so devastated by the loss of his companion that several days pass before he realizes that Alice has left home. Setting out to track his sister down, Sam crosses paths with a band of falcon smugglers and is given the chance to take back Frightful for his own. Faced with a difficult decision, Sam chooses wisely and the story ends on a satisfying note, full of hope for the future. Since nature has become chic in the years since Sam's first adventures were published, sophisticated readers will enjoy the author's wry references to the new fashion for Adirondack furniture and her description of an eatery that specializes in gourmet wild foods. Filled with accurate details (it is possible to trace Sam's journey on a map), likeable characters and plenty of backwoods lore, this sequel is worthy of its predecessor. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-- More than 30 years later, the story of Sam Gribley is resumed shortly after it ended in My Side of the Mountain (Dutton, 1988) . When Frightful, the falcon, is confiscated and Sam's sister Alice disappears, Sam and his friend Bando look for her. In their search, they uncover a ring of illegal falcon dealers and come to terms with their limits and responsibilities as individual humans within the larger society of all mountain dwellers. Using a straightforward, first-person narrative and journal entries, George effectively evokes the natural setting with which she is obviously familiar. She also takes great care to describe the devices Sam and Alice construct to make their serene yet rugged life easier. These contraptions are complicated, but are clarified by black-and-white sketches. Sam remains the focus of the novel, but characters are abundant in contrast to his earlier solitary lifestyle. Unfortunately, they play mainly as a catalyst for Sam's actions and development. While their presence injects a note of reality, it also underscores the incredibility of the story, for the more contact Sam has with civilization, the more remarkable his living situation becomes. The plot is considerably more complicated than in the first book, and current issues are raised, but the timelessness of theme and setting is carried over from the original. The contrivance of the black-market bird dealer may serve as a device to engage readers' interest, but the strength of the story lies in Sam's personal observations and growth. This volume can be enjoyed without the background laid in the first book, and it will inspire many readers to investigate the beginning of Sam's story. --Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, CA

Excellent Sequel to MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN
By Curtis J. George
ON THE FAR SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN is the sequel to the Newbery Honor Book, MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. Jean Craighead George waited 30 years before writing this sequel, mostly under the pressure of her beloved readers. The sequel is just as good, if not better, then the original. It continues the story of Sam Gribley's adventure when he ran away to live off of the land in the Catskill Mountains. This is the story of both Sam and his independent younger sister, Alice, who has joined him in her own treehouse nearby. The story is based on his life after his falcon Frightful has been confiscated by a conservation officer and his sister disappears. Sam leaves his home and a searches for his sister with the help of his friend Bando.
George's children books are the best that I have read on survival and the outdoors. I have read them several times and have shared them with many of my students. Just reading them makes me want to escape on a camping trip to the mountains.

A Have To Read!
By Josh
On The Far Side Of The Mountain, is sequel to My Side Of The Mountain. It is about a boy who runs away into the wilderness to live on his own. I liked this book because it is very adventourous and surprising. You never know what will happen next! If you have read Hatchet or My side of the Mountain you will love this book! You will also like it if you like action!

Either this is a step down, or I've gotten too old...
By Matt Hetling
The continuing adventures of Sam Gribley, who left his life in the civilized world to go live on a homestead on a mountain when he was just a young teenager. The first book dealt with Sam overcoming the harshest of conditions in his new life and coming to terms with his family, who initially want him back. With that conflict settled, this book centers around two interlocked crises; first, Sam's peregrine falcon companion is taken by a thief posing as a conservation officer; second, Sam's younger sister Alice disappears (she has been living with him for a while now), and he decides to track her down.

The Good and the Bad:

I may have just gotten to this book too late to derive the childhood joy that it is meant to impart. The characters all seemed wooden, the plot contrived and predictable, and the action unrealistic. The original book was one of my favorites as a young boy, and I imagine that I just missed the boat on this one. I did enjoy some of the ingenious survival skills Sam employed, and also liked that I can now recognize a few of the plant names that Sam mentions. And it is also a little thrilling to me to recognize that the tale takes place in the Catskill mountains, not far from my own childhood home. From outside the book, I can praise its politics, which are indicated by a bevy of strong female characters and a pure environmentalist ethic put into practical living.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8 This well-written resource contains biographies of key people, information on major battles, and a general introduction to the era. The alphabetically arranged entries are easy to understand, covering all the important issues, and the black-and-white photos and reproductions add immensely to the text. Even readers familiar with the era will find fresh facts here. The personal profiles use small anecdotes to illustrate the individual's character. For example, the entry on George Pickett talks about the depression that plagued him for the rest of his life after the Battle of Gettysburg. One small flaw is that the "see" references are often not circular. The article on John Ericsson leads readers to one on the Monitor and Merrimack; however, that article is not linked back to the one on Ericsson. The same is true of the articles on Stephen Douglas and the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful introduction for readers unfamiliar with the subject, and will be especially useful for reports. -Elizabeth M. Reardon, McCallie School, Chattanooga, TN

From Booklist
Gr. 4-8. Bolotin provides an excellent overview of the people, places, events, and concepts one needs to know about the U.S. Civil War. The entries average two paragraphs in length, with longer ones for subjects requiring more explanation. Battles are listed under their most common name, with other designations in parentheses: "Bull Run, Battle of (Manassas in South)." A wide-ranging account such as this runs the risk of being sketchy and incomplete, but Bolotin has a good eye for what students need to understand about the war and provides a great deal of information, skillfully whittled down to its most salient points. Topics range from Stonewall Jackson, Abraham Lincoln, and the Battle of Gettysburg to medical care, black soldiers, and Clara Barton. The format is attractive, with numerous photographs. A glossary and a time line are appended, as is an author's note, attached to a reading list, which advises students how to find information on a topic when faced by an overwhelming amount of material. Buy one copy to circulate and a second one for reference. Susan Dove Lempke

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-Including both fiction and nonfiction, some popular titles and some less well known, Marcus has created a fascinating array of walking tours of New York City. The scope of this project is huge, and while not every literary landmark has been included, the author hits highlights in many of the neighborhoods of the city. Touring through each section, Marcus introduces history, characters, authors, anecdotes, quotes, and often parts of the specific stories from children's books. There are also maps and many illustrations from the books featured. Aficionados of children's literature will enjoy this title, as will city children and their families, or visitors familiar with these famous scenes and stories. This guide can be used as a resource while touring specific locations, or as an interesting history, and can be an armchair tour if preferred. Historical background on authors, illustrators, and publishing helps tie the books into the history of the city, and a bibliography of children's books set in New York City is included. Don't come to town without this handy guide.

A charming idea, well-executed
By Rocco Dormarunno
Leonard Marcus hit upon a great idea and developed it perfectly. As a teacher, it is difficult to teach history or literature to the young and make the readings come to life. "Storied City: A Children's Book Guide to New York City", besides being a charming idea, is also a handy tool for parents and teachers. With this extremely convenient guide, you can walk the kids through the neighborhoods they've read about and enliven their reading experience. And, most importantly, Marcus writes in a way that doesn't talk down to children, and that's a tremendous asset.

enjoyable tour guide for seeing NYC with kids
By audrey frances
We recently returned from a visit to Manhattan, having used this guide (along with several others); we found it enjoyable and useful. There are eleven tours: Lower Manhattan, Greenwich Village/East Village/SoHo, Flatiron District/Gramercy Park/Chelsea, Midtown Manhattan, Central Park/Upper East Side, Central Park/Upper West Side, Harlem/Northern Manhattan, Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens, Staten Island; each tour includes a map of the tour, an introduction, readable text concerning authors, book settings and the history of New York City, small pictures and line drawings, and lists of additional authors connected to each area. There is no information about amenities along the way (restaurants, bathrooms, playgrounds). We found a wealth of information and many literary references -- it would be smart to read this ahead of time so you can select and read some of the referenced books before your trip.

a perfect delight
By G. DeCandido
With clarity and affection born of familiarity and delight, Marcus covers over 200 places and spaces in New York that have made an appearance in books for children and teenagers. He tells you how to get there and what you will see when you do. It is a lovely size, easy to carry and to hold, and it will take you on a virtual journey even if you and your children can't do a real one.
