Kindergarten-Grade 3-- Perrault's clever Puss is back, but unlike last year's retelling (Farrar, 1990) by Malcolm Arthur, with Caldecott Honor illustrations by Fred Marcellino, there's nothing in Haley's version to get excited about. Her text, while following Perrault's story line fairly well, descends once too often into too-cute dialogue ("Oh Great and Terrible Wizardness," Puss says to an ogre named Moustaphus) and has a gratuitously tagged-on footnote concerning "The Paw Law," created by the old King out of gratitude to Puss. Haley's illustrations are the real disappointment, though; they are garishly colored and inconsistent in execution. Too often they have a rough, unfinished look that is both disconcerting and unsatisfying. Libraries needing additional copies of this tale would do well to purchase more of Arthur and Marcellino's stunning book. --Linda Boyles, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL
