Grade 9 Up–In this fast-paced mystery, 16-year-old Chass has just six days to find out why her mother disappeared. The authorities in High Hopes, AL, want to put the teen in foster care. Several threatening men seem to want her dead. Chass knows little about her mother and their past; she isn't even sure of her real name. All she knows for certain is that they have been on the run for as long as she can remember, moving from town to town and adopting new aliases in each place. Sorrells weaves an entertaining tale with a sympathetic heroine. Several subplots add interest to the story, from Chass's first romantic feelings for the boy who was formerly her best friend to her dreams of a career as a musician. Her unlikely alliance with the bad-girl daughter of the town sheriff is also intriguing. The major revelations at the end may not come as a complete surprise to careful readers, but there are enough minor twists and turns to keep mystery fans guessing until the last satisfying pages.–Miranda Doyle, San Francisco Public Library

*Starred Review* Gr. 8-11. Sorrells, Edgar Award-winning author of legal thrillers for adults, brings his expertise to a compelling suspense story for teens. Chastity Pureheart, newly settled in High Hopes, Alabama, is absolutely in the dark about her name and why she and her mother keep packed suitcases by the front door wherever they live, as if they may need to move in an instant. On the night of Chastity's sixteenth birthday, her mother disappears. Mom's car is later found, abandoned and filled with fake I.D.s. Chastity is convinced that Mom is still alive, and with foster care looming in six days, Chastity is determined to find her. The clock is ticking, and there's a creepy vacant house to explore, with a skull in the basement that connects to a 1960s high-school football hero. Sorrells masterfully sustains suspense throughout, spiking the drama with some truly frightening scenes that make this a terrific read. In the end, Chastity, confused as she is, still emerges as determined, feisty--and triumphant. Connie Fletcher

Author should fire his editor
By Victoria Dennis
On one hand, this was a great book! I love this genre and I couldn't put the book down! A true page turner! An easy and fast read!! I imagine everyone who loves mysteries would enjoy reading this book! Creative and original!

However, there were unfortunate distractions that totally undid the enjoyability. I've never read a book with so many flaws in continuity and character. For example, the lead character, a budding musician, distinctly has to leave her prized guitar behind in a car used to kidnap her. Yet, her guitar is with her when next she needs it. Impossible. Then, in one paragraph, she is riding in a convertible Mustang and on the same page, just a couple of paragraphs later, the same Mustang is said to have a "sun roof." Again, impossible. In another section, a teacher tackles the lead character in the school library in order to get her to turn off her cell phone. That is implausible. Besides these and other obvious flaws, all characters except the lead are stereotypical, totally predictable, and one dimensional.

At the end of the book, the bad guys survive what should have killed them. This felt like a weak, obvious gimmick to get a second book going for the character where she must face these bad guys again. Why?

I don't know whether these are problems because the author has a poor editor, or because the author is cranking out books too fast to stay on top and keep the plot details tight and consistant. [On his Web site, the author says that he wrote 4 or maybe 5 books last year...he can't really remember which because he's writing so much he can't keep track.] The author obviously CAN concoct a GREAT plot (an EXCELLENT plot) and tell a great story (an AWESOME story) that keeps readers' attention. There is no excuse for the flaws.

Chastity Pureheart is a girl without a past. Everything about her is a fabrication, including her name. Along with her mother, Chass has spent as long as she can remember moving from one place to another with only a moments notice. She has her routine down pat--suitcase packed and ready to go at the front door at all times, hop in the quiet car and drive to where her mother has pointed to with her eyes closed on the map, stop at a library to draw a book of the shelves and choose a new name.

Chass has no idea why her and her mother are on the run. Her mother has never said a word about who her father is, or what she did before the running started, or why she hates music so passionately. All Chass knows is that they've been in High Hopes, Alabama, for three years now, and their lives are as normal as they've ever been. That is, normal until her best friend, Ben, buys her a guitar for her sixteenth birthday, and things go downhill fast.

First, Chass has to admit to her mother her love--no, obsession--with playing music, writing music, and singing. She knows it hurts her mother; after all, this is the same lady who doesn't even turn on the radio in the car when they're driving. But Chass can't hold her love of music in any longer, and her mother storms out of the house in a huff--and disappears off the face of the earth.

Suddenly, everyone is looking into the life of Chastity Pureheart and her mother a little too closely. For too people who have spent years avoiding public scrutiny, their lives are now under a microscope. She has a police chief treating her like a criminal, the parents of her best friend accusing her of all sort of mischief, and a mother that she's determined to find.

FAKE I.D. is a great mystery for all ages. Filled with action-adventure, a very believable mystery, and lots of thrilling twists and turns, you'll find yourself immersed in the life and times of Chass and her mother--and the reason for their life on the run.

Surprisingly Exciting
By Krissy
I picked this book up on a whim and was extremely pleased. While a little slow in parts, it picked up and was worth the money. Chass is likeable, funny, and quite brave in the way only teens can be. And, although she makes stupid mistakes, she fixes them as best she can and ends up even better.

While the story was kind of unrealistic, it was hilarious, smart, and action-filled. And, thankfully, while it says "Book 1" it didn't leave huge gaps in the story or have a lot of loose strings at the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.

Not bad...
By Anthony R.
Odd, quirky story echoing a well worn theme (Earth Abides, The Day of The Triffids, The Death of Grass, inter alia) but conveyed to me, at least, a sense of loss, epic loneliness, of possibilities (anything left lying around is mine now...) and endless despair now almost everyone else is gone.

Very enjoyable, engrossing, quick read. Perhaps the only criticism I can think of is that it was too short... I didn't want it to end yet. Even at that, it was a complete story that didn't feel rushed. I certainly didn't mind that it was written for a young adult audience... and perhaps the only recognizable indication that it was written for that audience is the length of the novel. Both the characters and the whole story felt very well developed. Highly recommended for fans of the PA genre.

Great example of John Christopher
By Amazon Customer
Great example of John Christopher. It is only a shame that "No Blade of Grass"/"Death of Grass" has not been published on Kindle yet. For that matter, the rest of his utterly depressing and wonderful apocalyptic works need to be re-published as well.

In 1959, Jean Craighead George published My Side of the Mountain. This coming-of-age story about a boy and his falcon went on to win a Newbery Honor, and for the past forty years has enthralled and entertained generations of would-be Sam Gribleys. The two books that followed--On the Far Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain--were equally extraordinary. Now all three books are available in one deluxe yet affordable volume for veteran devotees and brand-new fans alike.

Amazon.com Review
Asked why the writing of the My Side of the Mountain trilogy took Jean Craighead George more than 40 years, she responds, "My mother disapproved of sequels. 'Those are trashy books,' she told me when I was a child. So I grew up and did not write them.

"But kids are wiser than adults, I learned. Letters kept arriving from schools and homes, saying, 'We want to know more about Sam, Frightful, and the wilderness.' 'Sequels,' they said, 'are important.' They were right."

Now, all three of George's remarkable novels about the wilderness adventures of young Sam Gribley and his falcon, Frightful, are available in one handsome volume. In My Side of the Mountain, a Newbery Honor Book, Sam leaves home to fend for himself in the Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. For a year he lives in a hollowed-out tree, befriending animals and depending on his wits for survival. In the sequel, On the Far Side of the Mountain, Sam's sister has now joined him, and his falcon is confiscated by a conservation officer. Frightful's Mountain is an interesting departure for George. Written from the perspective of Frightful the falcon, the concluding novel in the trilogy follows her efforts to learn to depend on her own instincts in a world crawling with dangers.

Jean Craighead George is the beloved author of more than 80 books, including the Newbery Medal winner, Julie of the Wolves. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

About the Author
Jean Craighead George was the preeminent nature writer for children. She is the author of My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves, and her work spanned 50 years. She died in May 2012 at age 93.

Great Wilderness Escape reads
By C. Mathieu
I actually like the movie based on "My Side of the Mountain" better than the books. However it has very beautiful illustrations and it's nice to reade the sequels.

There are some other fascinating stories about wilderness life: "The Island Keeper" by Harry Mazer (about a girl surviving on a small island in a huge lake), "Cold River" by William Judson takes place in the early thirties in the Adirondacks, and author Gary Larson did write two books about a boy called Brian who survived an airplane crash and is forced to live through a winter in the woods.
One of the best wilderness books for kids is "Brendon Chase" by B. B.
http://www.amazon.com/Brendon-Chase-B-B/dp/B000PS8JGY/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1321472718&sr=1-2
It's also available as a British TV series.

Moreover there are 3 beautiful autobiographies by Kathrene Pinkerton (out of print, but well worth getting used via amazon.com!) and Anne LaBastille ("Woodswoman" and "Beyond Black Bear Lake") that are among the best books I ever read.

This book advertised as a hard cover book. It arrived as 3 soft covered books that were yellow and smelled like mildew. I purchased this for my grandson and was very disappointed.

The Enchanted Places: A Memoir of the Real Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh, by Christopher Milne

An autobiography of extraordinary tact as well as candour' The Times Millions of readers throughout the world have grown up with the stories and verses of A. A. Milne; have envied Christopher Robin in his enchanted world; laughed at Pooh - a bear of very little brain - and worried about Piglet and his problems. But what was it like to be the small boy with the long hair, smock and wellington boots? At the age of fifty-four Christopher Milne recalled his early childhood, remembering 'the enchanted places' where he used to play in Sussex. The Hundred Acre Wood, Galleon's Lap and Poohsticks Bridge existed not only in the stories and poems but were part of the real world surrounding the Milne home at Cotchford Farm. With deftness and artistry Milne draws a memorable portrait of his father, and an evocative reconstruction of a happy childhood in London and Sussex. It is a story told with humour and modesty. 'Mr Milne has set out to re-create a world . . . he has been totally successful' The Times Literary Supplement

Review
An autobiography of extraordinary tact as well as candour The Times Mr Milne has set out to re-create a world ... he has been totally successful Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Christopher Robin Milne was the son of author A.A. (Alan Alexander) Milne and Dorothy de Selincourt. As a young child, he was the basis of the character Christopher Robin in his father's Winnie-the-Pooh stories and in two books of poems. Christopher Milne was a shy boy and did not like the attention that he received from the public because of his father's success with the Pooh books. In 1974, Milne decided to publish the first of three autobiographical books. The Enchanted Places gave an account of his childhood and of the problems that he had encountered because of the Pooh books.

In which Billy Moon comes to terms with Christopher Robin
By ebuyer
Despite tales of Christopher Milne's bitterness over being forced into the spotlight by his father's tales of Pooh, this comming-to-terms-with-it-all autobiography is filled with wonderful memories of Christopher's childhood and his relationship with his father, his nanny and his mother. He addresses with much warmth and humor the question "What was it like to be Christopher Robin," and, as it goes into much detail about the real enchanted places in Ashdown Forest in England, it's a must read for anyone making an "expotition" to the real-life haunts of Pooh and friends

Enchanted book....
By Britt Arnhild Lindland
....about enchanted places and enchanted childhood favorites.
Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and all their friends have been family friends of us for a long time, and it was a treat to find this book about Christopher Robin, and be able to read about what it was like to be him. Did he really have a bear named Winniw the Pooh, did the Hundred Acre Wood excist, did he and Pooh play on Poohstick Bridge? What a fantastic childhood he must have had?
Of course the imagination in my mind was not all correct, at least not the fantastic childhood part. In this book Christopher Milne tells us from his heart how it was to be the son of A.A.Milne, the creator of all our childhood friends. The book is written with alot of charm, but we can also read between the lines about the negative effects of being a "famous" child, a boy with a childhood who belonged to, and still belong to the whole world.
If you know Winnie the Pooh, and who doesn't, this book is a little diamond, a book full of great details, a book which gives a unique view of the Christopher Robin myth.

"Walking alone through the woods...yet never lonely. What bliss this was!" Ibidem
By Tom McGee
The Enchanted Places: A Memoir of the real Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh (copyright 1974) by Christopher Milne, (August 21, 1920 - April 20, 1996) the son of famed children's book writer, Alan Alexander Milne (January 18, 1882 - January 31, 1956) of Winnie-the-Pooh fame was an intriguing read.

My original exposure to Winnie-the-Pooh was after 1961 when Disney gained the rights and used it to animate stories and sell stuffed animals--something that I had no interest in at my age during that period in my life.

Some years ago, after reading a book that had a major influence on my life, Andrew Mathews' "Being Happy," I noticed that he was influenced by author Benjamin Hoff, so I read several of his books, two of which were adult self-help books--The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet--that used A. A. Milne characters to simply explain complicated concepts.

Having recently reread The Tao of Pooh, I became interested in the Milne's and ordered two books that were written by Christopher Robin Milne, the source of inspiration for his father's children books.

Though Winnie's fame has out lived both of them, their stories are fascinating and compelling reads.

Christopher wrote this book at 54 years of age looking back on his childhood memories from that perspective first then switched to his adult view of how being a character in his father's books effected his life in London and the Sussex countryside.

He states that during the first 10-years of his life, he could honestly say that it was his Nanny that he loved. An only child in a house with cooks, maids and a Nanny he had little face-time with parents--Alan and Dorothy--he lived with, but really did not know them. For eight years, It was Nanny and his Teddy Bear, Pooh who were always with him and available for his need for hugs. Additionally, his father limited his time with Chris to make sure Dorothy had her time with him. Following that period when his Nanny was no longer in his life, he bonded with his father.

It was through his father's autobiography, "Years in Year Out" that he comes to know much about his father's inner thoughts and perspective.

Criticized for letting young Christopher play and roam alone in the hundreds of acres of woods with all its 100 dangers, his father said that if you protect him from those, the 101 would be the one that would hurt him. His trust in his son and his willingness to let him discover a fascination with nature and form his own belief and preferences were perhaps the greatest gifts his father gave him.

This 163 page 23 chapter story is written in a wonderful and enlightening style that I found absolutely delightful and curious to learn more about this family and their contributions. I can hardly wait to read Christopher's "The Path Through the Trees" and have just ordered the original version A. A. Milne's four Winnie-the-Pooh's children books with original art work by Ernest Shephard.

Christopher Robin Milne accurately describes his intentions to provide a scrap book of the family's life providing some photographs, but painting a descriptive family history, impetus for his father's creations and the effect upon their lives and relationships. It was a fantastic read!

Enjoy!

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, April 2010: What's in a name? A pretty fantastic book idea, for starters. At heart, Will Grayson, Will Grayson is about a couple of kids figuring out how to be themselves. Two of those kids happen to have the same name, and not much in common outside of that, but their serendipitous friendship sets the stage for a much larger, braver, and more candid story than the simplicity of the plot might suggest. The relevance for teens here is clear--high school is the only time in your life when you have the undivided opportunity to obsess over your every move, sentence, and outfit change--but the part about understanding who you are doesn't stop when you graduate. That's what makes Will Grayson, Will Grayson as interesting a pick for adults as it is for teens: the questions don't get simpler, but looking at them through the eyes of a 16-year-old brings a welcome sense of honesty and humor to this thing called life. No one's ever too old to enjoy that. --Anne Bartholomew

Amazon Exclusive: David Levithan and John Green Talk About Names

Will Grayson, Will Grayson is about two teenage boys with the same name, whose lives intersect in unexpected ways. The book originated with the thought of giving two different boys the same name, and to give that name some meaning. It also comes from David's own experience. So to give you an inside peek at the making of the book, we figured it would be fun to give you insight into our own names, as well as Will Grayson’s.

David Levithan

To my knowledge, there are only two other David Levithans in the world – my dad’s cousin, and a lawyer in South Africa who, as far as we can tell, isn’t family. The last name Levithan is actually the invention of an immigration official – when my great-grandfather came to America from Russia, it should have translated to Levitan. But somehow the h got in there. Now, whenever I meet another Levithan (which is rare), odds are good that he or she is related to me.

That said, the story of Will Grayson, Will Grayson came from someone whose name is close to mine, but not identical. David Leventhal went to Brown at the same time I did, and people would confuse us often.

This ended up being something of a joke, because David was an extraordinary dancer, while I was…not an extraordinary dancer. So people would exclaim, “We had no idea someone as clumsy as you could be so graceful on stage!” and I’d have to say, “Well, un, that wasn’t me.” Finally, right before graduation, I contacted David and we met up. We became instant friends, and when we both moved to New York after college, we were always in each other’s company. The similarity of our names often threw people for a loop… and I thought, well, that might make an interesting story.

Amusingly, David Leventhal’s college roommate’s name was . . . Jon Green.

John Green

I was named after my great-grandfather, John Michael Crosby, an itinerant minor-league baseball manager and occasional catcher. I like my name, but being a John Green can certainly be inconvenient, because there are a lot of us. Among many others, there is John Green the realtor in Mississippi (who owns johngreen.com, much to my chagrin), John Green the Australian botanist, and of course John Green the world-renowned Bigfoot scholar. This last John Green, who is so revered in the field of Bigfoot research that he is often called “one of the four horseman of Sasquatchery,” is kind of my mortal enemy. I once wrote a magazine article in which I passingly noted that Bigfoot is, you know, fictional, and John Green replied with a letter arguing that my anti-Bigfoot stance was besmirching the good name of John Greens everywhere.

Such is the curse of being a John Green. Or a Will Grayson, for that matter.

Will

We decided that I (David) would choose our character’s first name, and John would choose his last name. I liked the name Will because of its different, sometimes contradictory, meanings. As a noun, it can be so strong – where there’s a will, there’s a way, and whatnot. But as a verb, it’s split. Sometimes it’s just as definite (It will be done!), but that definiteness is underscored by an uncertainty – you say it will be done, but it hadn’t been done yet, has it? And put it at the start of a question (“Will you still love me tomorrow?”) and it becomes the entrance for all kinds of vulnerability. That seemed right for the characters.

Grayson

I liked Grayson because whenever I would hear that name, it always sounded to me like “grace in,” which always struck me as a richly ambiguous phrase – is “grace in” the beginning of a clause or the end of it? Are we being asked to find grace in something, or to let grace in? Those questions seemed like interesting ones for the guy I wanted to write about.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 9 Up—Will Grayson's best friend since fifth grade, nicknamed Tiny Cooper, is bigger than life in terms of his physical stature and his personality—the "world's largest person who is really, really gay." Tiny, while seeking the boy of his dreams, has been through the trauma of myriad short-lived romantic relationships and Will has supported him each time his heart is broken. Now, Tiny decides it's Will's turn. At first, Will resents Tiny's matchmaking efforts, but then an amazing coincidence that stems from it brings a new person into their lives. It's another teen named Will Grayson, who is sad and depressed, and captures Tiny's heart. While these and other relationships are connecting, intersecting, and eventually changing, Tiny writes and produces an autobiographical high school musical extravaganza that is really about life. On the night it premiers, everything comes full circle and further validates the presence of the Will Graysons. Based on the premises that "love is tied to truth" and "being friends, that's just something you are," this powerful, thought-provoking, funny, moving, and unique plot is irresistible. Told in alternating chapters from each Will Grayson's point of view (one in lower case, effectively individualizing identities), complete with honest language, interesting characters, and a heartfelt, gritty edge, this quirky yet down-to-earth collaboration by two master YA storytellers will keep readers turning pages.—Diane P. From Booklist
*Starred Review* Two superstar authors pair up and really deliver the goods, dishing up a terrific high-energy tale of teen love, lust, intrigue, anger, pain, and friendship threaded with generous measures of comedy and savvy counsel. Though the ensemble cast revolves around Tiny Cooper, “the world’s largest person who is really, really gay, and also the world’s gayest person who is really, really large,” the central characters are the two titular narrators, who share a name (but don’t meet until partway through) and trade off alternate chapters. One Will has been Tiny’s satellite for years but is starting to chafe at the role—especially after Tiny forcibly sets him up with Jane, an infuriatingly perfect match. The other, whose clinical depression is brilliantly signaled by an all-lowercase narrative and so intensely conveyed that his early entries are hard to read, sees at least a glimmer of light fall on his self-image after a chance meeting with Tiny sparks a wild mutual infatuation. The performance of an autobiographical high-school musical that Tiny writes, directs, and stars in makes a rousing and suitably theatrical finale for a tale populated with young people engaged in figuring out what’s important and shot through with strong feelings, smart-mouthed dialogue, and uncommon insight. Grades 9-12. --John Peters

Powerhouse of Awesome
By amandapsychedelia
I've been waiting for this book to come out since it was announced. Some background on my reading history: I love all of John Green's books and I love what I've read of David Levithan. So, naturally, I had high hopes for this awesome collision of genius.

Will Grayson, Will Grayson is the story of two guys named Will Grayson: they are not related, they have close to nothing in common, and neither, in fact, knows that the other one exists. That is, until their volatile meeting in the middle of this book. In a porn store. In life-crumbling circumstances.

As usual with these two authors, the characters are realistically crafted and easy to relate to. There were times throughout the story that I felt myself nodding in sympathy or feeling vindictive hatred for the unfortunately dead-on portrayal of selfishness and angst that's common in most high school teenagers. What I love about these characters is that they are decidedly fluid individuals who learn life lessons and cry and hope and dissect situations to ridiculous extremes and hold grudges and appreciate love and friendship. This is the kind of book that reminds you what a coming of age tale is supposed to be.

My favorite character was Tiny Cooper. If I had to choose my favorite Will Grayson, I would choose Tiny Cooper. He was just that awesome. Tiny is the very large, very gay, and very fabulous best friend of John Green's Will Grayson. He has received funding from the student council in order to put on a musical he wrote himself called Tiny Dancer--which is, of course, all about Tiny Cooper. He is the show stealer of the book.

On the opposite end of the character spectrum, I never felt much of a connection with Jane, the love interest of John Green's Will Grayson. This is probably because I've come to expect much of John Green's girls. I was infatuated with Alaska Young and Margo was a fantastic multi-dimensional character. I had the same sort of problem with Jane as I did with the heroine of An Abundance of Katherines--I just never fell in love with her.

As for Levithan, I'm still pondering why he chose to write his portion using no capitals. I like to think that it's because his Will Grayson is just too apathetic to care about using a shift key. Authors trying to be innovative with the stylizing their narrative is usually a hit or miss for me. In Levithan's case, the innovation wasn't so over the top that it became pretentious, which--and I'm not naming any names--tends to happen.

For what's it worth, I have absolutely no regrets for paying the twenty dollar price for this book. John Green and David Levithan are a witty powerhouse of a team and I hope that they decide to do more work together in the future. I recommend Will Grayson, Will Grayson to all fans of humorous, romantic, intelligent coming of age tales.

Funny and Dark, Funny and Thoughtful
By Middle-aged Professor
My 15-year old son and I both enjoyed this double threaded teen self-realization story. The contrivance of two different Will Graysons is a mere decorative topping to two stories of teenage boys coming to terms with themselves, while both rotating around an outsized (personally and physically) friend named Tiny. One Will battles depression and comes to terms with his sexuality, the other Will his timidity and fear of feeling. Their alternating narration and narrative styles keep the story fresh, if not surprising, and their humor allows rich development of some serious themes. The book lost steam towards the end---the climax is not very climactic---but was intelligent and entertaining throughout. Both Tiny and one of the Wills are gay, and their sexuality is certainly very prominent in the book. And, while by no means does it make their life easy, I was struck by the ease with which the theme fit into the rest of the story. This is not the way such a story would have been told twenty years ago, or even ten, and, when I was a teenager 30+ years ago, I doubt it would have even been published. Very, very cool to see it now as just an important, integrated theme in the book. That was the highlight that will stay with me.

Funny and sweet
By kennedy19
This one is a charming picture book for preschoolers on up through maybe second grade. One day a new teacher arrives at school. Dramatic irony kicks in; the reader can instantly tell that the "teacher" is in fact a gorilla, but the book's gentle humor comes from the kids in the story going along with the situation. Accordingly, they learn how to swing from trees and make a mess with art supplies and clang pots and pans for music. Along comes this principal, who informs the class that "there has been a terrible mistake" and that the *real* new teacher is here at last, having been sent to the zoo by mistake! Everything is thus cleared up, but the kids miss their "favorite teacher" and visit him at the zoo. Wonderful.

In this story it is about a new teacher which happens to be a gorilla. When all the kids got to school they were not sure on what to call their new teacher because he never gave them his name. All he did was grunt a lot. In the school it was time for arithmetic and he showed them how to count on their toes. They also learned a new way to write. In science class they went outside. For lunch they went back into the classroom and ate lunch. They new teacher ate sixteen bananas! The kids all decided to bring in bananas to eat for lunch the next day so they could be like their new teacher!
This book teaches that even if you are not the best teacher or your not suited for the job you can always teach someone somewhere something new.
The age level for this book is 3-8. I thought that this book was very good and I would recommend it for little kids.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8–Life is pretty dark for Charlie. He is blind, and his dad has just been arrested for a crime he didn't commit. Now, with the help of his friends Bernadette and Lewis, Charlie is determined to find the real Stocking Bandit–a masked man who has been robbing banks up and down their metropolitan city. In addition to solving a crime that the police think is a wrap, the teenagers must deal with a bully in their seventh-grade class. Despite the serious subject matter, the book elicits plenty of laughs with main characters who are smart, funny, and likable. Fate also seems to take a liking to them, in the form of a classmate named Gideon who mysteriously shows up at just the right times to save the trio from certain doom. Aside from the occasional supernatural element, the scenes involving bullying and imperfect parents are refreshingly realistic and hold plenty for readers to relate to. Fascinating details that often go unnoticed by the ordinary observer are included throughout much of the story, since Charlie's point of view depends mostly on hearing and feeling. To assist in conveying his visual limitation, the text is punctuated with illustrations of what Charlie sees at critical moments–all black pages. With a fast-paced plot, witty dialogue, and compelling characters, this mystery is riveting all the way to its exciting and surprising conclusion.–Emily Rodriguez, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

From Booklist
Gr. 7-10. Charlie's dad is accused of being the masked thief who has been robbing neighborhood cash machines, but Charlie is convinced he is innocent. With his friend Bernadette, he sets out to prove Dad's innocence, confronting a huge cast of suspects--from the classroom bimbo and the schoolyard bully to the neighbor who suddenly sports fur coats and jewelry. The plot twists and turns until the gruesome climax plays out in the local graveyard. What's special here is intrepid Charlie, blind from birth. Bernadette, his guide and fellow sleuth, may tell him what's going on, but, in the end, it's Charlie who makes crucial discoveries in a place where only he can find the way. There is no reverence about Charlie's disability, and he and Bernadette joke about the limits of his Braille computer and the self-important volunteer caregiver. In fact, all the adult characters--parents, teachers, and detectives--are decidedly not heroic. Readers will rush to find out whodunit, but they'll come away with more than the answer to the mystery; they'll clearly grasp that people are more than what they seem to be. Hazel Rochman

From Charlie's Point of View
By A Customer
From Charlie's Point of View is a mystery and is written by Richard Scrimger. Almost everything in this book is a coincidence. It is about a blind kid named Charlie and his friends Bernadette and Lewis. Charlie's dad, Roger is accused of being the Stocking Bandit, but he's innocent. The Stocking Bandit is a bank robber who has stolen a lot of money from multiple banks.

Roger was getting ready for work and he noticed his black socks had holes in them. Roger looked at his watch and he was late for work. He stuffed his black socks into his pocket and grabbed another pair. Since Roger was late to work he decided to take the taxi to work instead of the bus; the taxi is expensive, but the bus takes too long.

The Stocking Bandit was in a taxi at the same time as Roger. Roger and the Stocking Bandit both went to the same bank, wearing almost the exact suit. Roger was just going to work, but the Stocking Bandit was there to rob the bank. Since Roger was wearing almost the exact suit as the Stocking Bandit, the taxi driver of the Stocking Bandit thought Roger was him. The taxi driver reported that to the police and then the police accused Roger of being the Stocking Bandit.

At the same time as Roger and the Stocking Bandit were in taxis, Charlie and Bernadette were busy saving a nerd from a hungry dog. They had just ridden the bus and Bernadette swore she saw a guy with a stocking on his face running. As Charlie and Bernadette were trying to save the nerd (which wasn't really working), Charlie and Bernadette heard this sound that was like a choir singing. And then a miracle happened, a bouncy ball hit a broken skate board and tripped the hungry dog which was just about to charge at Charlie. The nerd, Charlie, and Bernadette ran to school just as the bell rang. As they were running to school, the nerd introduced himself as Lewis.

When Charlie and Bernadette got home from school, his mom told him that his dad was in jail. Charlie's mom also told him a few days later that if Roger is accused of bank robbery he and his mom will have to move to Wennipeg, Canada because of the publicity. Now Charlie has to figure out who is the Stocking Bandit before his dad gets accused of bank robberies because he doesn't want to move all the way to Canada. He can do that with a little help from his friends, Bernadette and Lewis.

I rate From Charlie's Point of View five out of five stars. I really liked this book. I liked this book because I thought that the book kept you asking yourself what happens next. I also liked the book because there are these sentences where it says something about what Charlie sees, and then the next two pages are grey. I thought that was funny and it reminded me what blind people actually do see; nothing.

Richard Scrimger's style of writing is very interesting. He writes scenes inside of chapters. Each scene is someone else's point of view. In other words, the scenes switch off telling what one of the main characters is doing. Richard Scrimger is very good at describing things. He describes everything as if you can't see or hear or smell or touch. Richard Scrimger is a very good author.

Fun Mystery
By DevoGirl
This is a fun, breezy mystery, with unusual characters and quirky, present-tense narration. Charlie is a great character: born blind, he's pretty confident and well-adjusted, but he still needs to rely on his friend Bernadette to get around. She has problems of her own, with an alcoholic mother and deadbeat dad. The story starts on the first day of middle school, where they struggle to make friends, avoid bullies, deal with weird teachers, and oh yeah, try to get Charlie's dad off the hook for bank robbery. Charlie and Bernadette are very appealing, but the other characters tend toward cartoonish stereotypes. Still, it was fun to read, and I wish there were more stories about Charlie, this could have been the first book in a series.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-7–Alex Kendrill and his friend Rocky are exploring in the woods when they discover an illegal animal trap. Shortly thereafter, Alex witnesses a pig falling off the back of a truck driven by a reckless driver, and he and his friends and family rescue it. When its owner shows up to claim it, the Kendrills refuse to release it. When Hogman again attempts to reclaim the animal, he kidnaps Alex's cat, Pete. His family then sets out to locate the feline and prove that the man is involved in illegal trapping. Kehret has a unique writing style, and the text includes long stretches of story narrated by Pete. Some of these scenes are deliciously snarky, with the cat looking up words in the dictionary that start with the letters c-a-t and giving a detailed description of coughing up furballs. The technique is also effective when he describes what happens to him during his kidnapping. Animal lovers will get a kick out of this intriguing mystery.–Kristen Oravec, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Strongsville, OH

From Booklist
Punctuated by italicized interjections from a feline coauthor, who inserts himself into the tale as a major character, this uncomplicated animal-rescue adventure opens with the discovery of an illegal game trap and closes with an arrest. In between, young Alex--with friends, family, and, of course, his pet--faces off against Hogman, a scruffy, abusive ne'er-do-well with a gun. Having helped rescue workers save a pig that falls from Hogman's recklessly driven truck, Alex suspects the tough-talking hermit of setting traps, but it's the cat who finds the evidence--and who is nearly shot in the suspenseful climax. Despite major holes in the story's internal logic, young fans of Spy Cat (2002) and Stranger Next Door (2001) will enjoy watching the cat expedite Hogman's apprehension while grousing that his human associates are too dim to realize that he's trying to communicate with them. Fun and Suspense for a developing Mystery Fan
By Jackie Foster
We had to find a Mystery book for my 4th grader's book report and we discovered Pete! He is the main character of a series of books by Peg Kehret, and he is a cat with attitude! As the story is told, it is punctuated with Pete's personal views and comments which had my daughter laughing and running to us to read her favorite parts aloud! She loved this book and we have bought more in the series! Pete will appeal to girls and boys!

Pete, the cat, has helped to write another good story. This time he helps a pig in trouble. Pete understands what his humans are saying but is not pleased that they never seem to listen to him. If you like a well-written story, this one's for you.
