The Enchanted Places: A Memoir of the Real Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh, by Christopher Milne

An autobiography of extraordinary tact as well as candour' The Times Millions of readers throughout the world have grown up with the stories and verses of A. A. Milne; have envied Christopher Robin in his enchanted world; laughed at Pooh - a bear of very little brain - and worried about Piglet and his problems. But what was it like to be the small boy with the long hair, smock and wellington boots? At the age of fifty-four Christopher Milne recalled his early childhood, remembering 'the enchanted places' where he used to play in Sussex. The Hundred Acre Wood, Galleon's Lap and Poohsticks Bridge existed not only in the stories and poems but were part of the real world surrounding the Milne home at Cotchford Farm. With deftness and artistry Milne draws a memorable portrait of his father, and an evocative reconstruction of a happy childhood in London and Sussex. It is a story told with humour and modesty. 'Mr Milne has set out to re-create a world . . . he has been totally successful' The Times Literary Supplement

An autobiography of extraordinary tact as well as candour The Times Mr Milne has set out to re-create a world ... he has been totally successful Times Literary Supplement

About the Author
Christopher Robin Milne was the son of author A.A. (Alan Alexander) Milne and Dorothy de Selincourt. As a young child, he was the basis of the character Christopher Robin in his father's Winnie-the-Pooh stories and in two books of poems. Christopher Milne was a shy boy and did not like the attention that he received from the public because of his father's success with the Pooh books. In 1974, Milne decided to publish the first of three autobiographical books. The Enchanted Places gave an account of his childhood and of the problems that he had encountered because of the Pooh books.

In which Billy Moon comes to terms with Christopher Robin
By ebuyer
Despite tales of Christopher Milne's bitterness over being forced into the spotlight by his father's tales of Pooh, this comming-to-terms-with-it-all autobiography is filled with wonderful memories of Christopher's childhood and his relationship with his father, his nanny and his mother. He addresses with much warmth and humor the question "What was it like to be Christopher Robin," and, as it goes into much detail about the real enchanted places in Ashdown Forest in England, it's a must read for anyone making an "expotition" to the real-life haunts of Pooh and friends

Enchanted book....

....about enchanted places and enchanted childhood favorites.
Winnie the Pooh, Piglet and all their friends have been family friends of us for a long time, and it was a treat to find this book about Christopher Robin, and be able to read about what it was like to be him. Did he really have a bear named Winniw the Pooh, did the Hundred Acre Wood excist, did he and Pooh play on Poohstick Bridge? What a fantastic childhood he must have had?
Of course the imagination in my mind was not all correct, at least not the fantastic childhood part. In this book Christopher Milne tells us from his heart how it was to be the son of A.A.Milne, the creator of all our childhood friends. The book is written with alot of charm, but we can also read between the lines about the negative effects of being a "famous" child, a boy with a childhood who belonged to, and still belong to the whole world.
If you know Winnie the Pooh, and who doesn't, this book is a little diamond, a book full of great details, a book which gives a unique view of the Christopher Robin myth.

"Walking alone through the woods...yet never lonely. What bliss this was!" Ibidem
By Tom McGee
The Enchanted Places: A Memoir of the real Christopher Robin and Winnie-the-Pooh (copyright 1974) by Christopher Milne, (August 21, 1920 - April 20, 1996) the son of famed children's book writer, Alan Alexander Milne (January 18, 1882 - January 31, 1956) of Winnie-the-Pooh fame was an intriguing read.

My original exposure to Winnie-the-Pooh was after 1961 when Disney gained the rights and used it to animate stories and sell stuffed animals--something that I had no interest in at my age during that period in my life.

Some years ago, after reading a book that had a major influence on my life, Andrew Mathews' "Being Happy," I noticed that he was influenced by author Benjamin Hoff, so I read several of his books, two of which were adult self-help books--The Tao of Pooh and The Te of Piglet--that used A. A. Milne characters to simply explain complicated concepts.

Having recently reread The Tao of Pooh, I became interested in the Milne's and ordered two books that were written by Christopher Robin Milne, the source of inspiration for his father's children books.

Though Winnie's fame has out lived both of them, their stories are fascinating and compelling reads.

Christopher wrote this book at 54 years of age looking back on his childhood memories from that perspective first then switched to his adult view of how being a character in his father's books effected his life in London and the Sussex countryside.

He states that during the first 10-years of his life, he could honestly say that it was his Nanny that he loved. An only child in a house with cooks, maids and a Nanny he had little face-time with parents--Alan and Dorothy--he lived with, but really did not know them. For eight years, It was Nanny and his Teddy Bear, Pooh who were always with him and available for his need for hugs. Additionally, his father limited his time with Chris to make sure Dorothy had her time with him. Following that period when his Nanny was no longer in his life, he bonded with his father.

It was through his father's autobiography, "Years in Year Out" that he comes to know much about his father's inner thoughts and perspective.

Criticized for letting young Christopher play and roam alone in the hundreds of acres of woods with all its 100 dangers, his father said that if you protect him from those, the 101 would be the one that would hurt him. His trust in his son and his willingness to let him discover a fascination with nature and form his own belief and preferences were perhaps the greatest gifts his father gave him.

This 163 page 23 chapter story is written in a wonderful and enlightening style that I found absolutely delightful and curious to learn more about this family and their contributions. I can hardly wait to read Christopher's "The Path Through the Trees" and have just ordered the original version A. A. Milne's four Winnie-the-Pooh's children books with original art work by Ernest Shephard.

Christopher Robin Milne accurately describes his intentions to provide a scrap book of the family's life providing some photographs, but painting a descriptive family history, impetus for his father's creations and the effect upon their lives and relationships. It was a fantastic read!

Enjoy!
