this is a beautiful book! i got this for my husband on his first fathers day! its a great way to learn and hear to your kids in Spanish! my sons love to read it with him, its full of different animals and lots of love! its a great gift idea for the whole family! i have purchased this for my friends and family and take to every baby shower!

The Gallery is the perfect summer book for me

The Gallery is the perfect summer book for me. The mystery is wonderful and makes this story a page-turner. (Also, I heard the author speak at Books of Wonder, and clues are hidden in the cover art, which was really cool.) But what I love most about the book is the main character, Martha. She's just a great kid, full of courage and empathy. Not that we need every book to teach a lesson, but I don't mind that Martha incidentally happens to be a great example of a young person who follows her conscience, even when she knows doing so might get her into trouble. I got this book because I loved Laura Fitzgerald's first book, Under The Egg. And as great as Egg was, The Gallery is even more fantastic. The writing is absolutely beautiful, and the dialogue is wonderful, the pacing terrific. Just a great story in every way. It has the feeling of a classic.

The Gallery Puts Excitement and Colorful History Into Paintings and Their Myths.

When Laura Marx Fitzgerald’s THE GALLERY begins, 12-year-old Martha has been kicked out of school and has taken a job at the Sewell mansion with her mother, who is the head of staff. Once she enters the house, she is astounded by the sheer beauty of the place, and doesn’t mind the work in the kitchen. But once her mother tells her that Mr. Sewell’s wife, Rose, is a madwoman who lives upstairs and never comes out of her rooms, the excitement begins. She tries to figure out what’s really going on from all the staff who work there, including the footman, Alphonse, a fanatical art history buff. With his help, she starts to put the puzzle pieces together.

Laura Marx Fitzgerald brings together a mix of true stories and events from the 1920s, breathing new life into famous pieces of art and a hostage situation. THE GALLERY was just the right amount of fiction and history because, while the story is engaging for kids, it also teaches the reader about stories about famous paintings, the election of Herbert Hoover, the stock market crash and vaudeville. I was delighted that at the end of the story, the author provides a list of the paintings that were mentioned in the book and which newspaper stories and real people she drew from to create this novel.

This book was well-researched and it is clear that Fitzgerald’s art history studies at Harvard and Cambridge Universities inspired this novel. As she weaves paintings into the web of her story, I feel the need to look them up online and see them for myself. In fact, she has inspired me to go to my local museums and learn more about the stories behind some of the paintings. This book is perfect for children who have not discovered the fun (yet!) in going to art museums (which, let's face it, is most of us!). This is because THE GALLERY puts excitement and colorful history into paintings and their myths.

Mr. Sewell, a wealthy newspaper owner, appears charming and generous, but Martha knows something is wrong in the Sewell household. Mrs. Sewell, the once plucky and brave Rose Pritchard, refuses to leave her room, surrounding herself with her impressive art collection. But is Rose really crazy? Is she using her precious art to send Martha a message? Well, Martha is plucky and brave in her own right, and she’s determined to uncover the truth!

Laura Marx Fitzgerald’s The Gallery is a thoroughly thrilling middle-grade, bursting with mystery, history, art, and quirky characters. Spinning together both real-fact history and wildly fun imaginings, Fitzgerald offers young readers an unforgettable and entertaining reading experience.

Fast-paced, yet not lacking in details or world-building, The Gallery drew me in easily and had me excitingly turning pages. Martha’s moxie and determination are irresistible and contagious! The Gallery is full of quirky, eclectic, strange, and interesting characters that are a lot of fun to figure out. The author creates a fully believable and enthralling 1920’s NYC setting. With attention to details, accurate slang/vocabulary, and vivid descriptions of clothing, people, and pop culture, readers will feel transported. With gasp-worthy revelations, crazy schemes, and plenty of twists and turns, readers will have a blast solving the great Rose Sewell mystery alongside Martha! The authors use of art is especially clever and intriguing. And readers won’t see the explosive ending coming!

The Perfectionist Judges Himself Harshly

Flying Colors is the most introspective of the Hornblower novels. For those who want to understand who Hornblower really is, this book is probably the most revealing in the Hornblower series. Unlike the other stories which contain lots of naval action at sea, this book occurs mostly on the land of Spain and France, and the rivers of France. As a result, those who like the Hornblower novels for their battles and action will find this book to be one of the least satisfying in the series.
We all know ourselves best when we face problems. After the many successes in his career, Captain Hornblower ended up in Ship of the Line fighting an impossible battle between his ship, the Sutherland, and four French vessels. Taking horrible casualties, Hornblower struck his colors and surrendered at the end of that book. Flying Colors opens with Hornblower in a Spanish prison, with the expectation that he will be tried and executed for having flown French colors as camouflage to aid an attack. His wife, Maria, is pregnant in England. Hornblower also yearns for Lady Barbara Leighton, the wife of his admiral, whom readers met in Beat to Quarters and saw again in the beginning of Ship of the Line. Hornblower is in despair as he visits the dying and imprisoned sailors who are in the same garrison.
Many troubling questions go through Hornblower's mind. How well will he face death before a firing squad? Will his weak body betray him?
His first lieutenant, William Bush, is also to be tried. At the end of Ship of the Line, Bush lost the lower part of one leg. Will Bush survive the injury and trial?
What will happen to his wife and unborn child after he is dead?
Can he resist sweet temptation, when it is offered?
Can he escape death by firing squad?
Even if he escapes, how can he hope to be exonerated in a court martial for losing the Sutherland? Captains aren't supposed to surrender their vessels, no matter how badly damaged.
If he escapes the court martial, how will he handle being in love with Lady Barbara while being an unhappily married man with a new baby?
Will he ever have a chance to command a vessel again?
Anyone who has ever known self-doubt will find Hornblower's trauma realistic and refreshing. He becomes more like an ordinary person with normal feelings in this book. As a result, I found Hornblower to be much more appealing here than when his brilliant intellect guided him to smooth success in the earlier books.
Eventually, Hornblower finds himself wanting in many of these regards . . . but moves on. Ultimately, he faces new satisfactions and disappointments that indicate to him that his idealistic, perfectionist view of the world is a flawed one. Everyone else is merely human as well. Hornblower is deeply disappointed.
Forester raises an interesting point in the novel. There are real heroes in the book. These people are true to themselves and have total integrity. Public adulation will never be theirs, however. On the other hand, the world needs heroes . . . and new ones will be created, whether or not they deserve the honor. The possibility of remaining a real hero is improved by not having to deal with the issues that can tempt one away from heroism and integrity. So Bush is shown to be a real hero, while Hornblower is simply a self-doubting actor who is extraordinarily capable of creating great results.
The book does a magnificent job of using the title theme throughout. Having struck his colors on the Sutherland, Hornblower now flies his colors again in this book in every sense of that phrase. Watch for the subtleties of how this is done as you read the book.
If you know French, you will enjoy the challenge of imagining how Hornblower manufactures phrases from his limited command of the language to accomplish what needs to be done. As I read the book, I mentally made the necessary translations.
The book is also interesting for displaying the consequences for the French of being under Napoleon's rule. Hornblower excoriates the Corsican tyrant in the earlier novels, but here we see that others are being squashed underneath authority's boot as well. Many of the social observations about the French people in 1811 are very nicely done in this book.
What is more important: Being fearless or overcoming your weaknesses? What can you do today to overcome your weaknesses and help others to do the same?

A worthwhile member of the series

This installment in the Hornblower series begins with Hornblower captured by the French. Subsequently he escapes and most of the remainder is about his chandestine travels through Napoleonic France. For an action novel of this kind (1800s sailing), characters are adequately developed and the action and suspense are adequate. Perhaps the most satisfying content is the historical portrait of life France at the time.

It is difficult to put this series of novels down. I anxiously go from one novel in the series to the next and each one seems to be better than the last.
In this novel Captain Hornblower spends a great deal of time ashore so in addition to some life at sea and some great sea battles there is also a shore adventure that is also exciting.

These classic stories are convenient in this boxed set. It's easier to read "a couple of books" rather than saying to a 3-year-old, "Just 2 chapters." The characters are iconic and the stories charming. The author Millne's son is the real Christopher Robin who fell in love with the real Canadian bear Winnie (from "Winnipeg") at the London Zoo.

My toddler adores this book. The colors are bright, the pictures are large, the rhymes are traditional, and mostly familiar ("Baa Baa Black Sheep," "Jack and Jill"). As I'm reading,I do alter such harsh though realistic nursery rhymes as "There was an old woman." Instead of saying that she scolds her children and sends them to bed, I'm compelled to say that she kisses them kindly. The artwork, I think, is better than that in the Rosemary Wells collection of nursery rhymes.

Three lovable little dragons from the Dutton Easy Readers series that began with Good Night, Good Knight (2000) now appear in a large-format picture book. When a friendly old wizard asks them to watch his cats while he is gone, they readily agree. Later, unable to read his instructions, the preliterate dragons are baffled but still game. They pore over his illustrated message, guess at the words, and use clues from the pictures he has drawn, but they wildly mistake his meanings. In one case, they imagine that a pool of water means "take the cats swimming" rather than "give the cats fresh water." Well suited to reading aloud, the story is written with a keen ear for language and a good understanding of what makes young children laugh. Meisel's ink-and-watercolor illustrations, full of lively details, are as entertaining as the story. Sure to please the not-reading-quite-yet set as well as the many fans of the previous books. We just love this series!!!

My four year old girl has been enamored with dragons for a couple of years, and has lately gotten very interested in knights, castles, etc. I quickly found that there is very little out there that is appropriate for smaller children, on the subject of knights. Either the information is too complex, or more likely, too gruesome for my taste. When I discovered this sweet series, I immediately wanted all of them.
I really like the way the verses flow and how the author repeats the action over and over. So many rhyming books for kids sound awkward and forced, but not these. They are just wonderful!
These are just fun books. I'm glad my library has them, but we are buying them too, so we can read them whenever we want! It is a refreshing angle to the knight and dragon relationship. Nearly everything else I found was adversarial, and since we love dragons, I was sorry about that.
If you have a child who loves knights and dragons, also check out Tomie Paola's The Knight and the Dragon, about a knight reading up on how to fight dragons and a dragon reading up on how to fight knights. The "fight" is hilarious and the end has a clever twist that delighted my child and me too!
The Reluctant dragon, by Kenneth Grahame, is either for an older child who can read, or a great read aloud that my four year old enjoyed, and there is a neat old Disney movie based on this book. We loved this too.

great story

My 3 almost turning 4 year old loves this story. It tells the adventures of 3 little dragons that agree to babysit the wizard's cats. Hilariously, the dragons do the best they can with the cats getting the worst of it (great for dog lovers!) Teaches right from wrong and reinforces how important it is to learn to read. My kids like to pretend "meow" when the cats are in the cupboard. We will read the author's other books because we liked this one so much.

Oh to be able to read

The three little dragons are on an important baby-sitting job for the wizards cats. The instructions have been left for them, but there is one problem - the dragons can't read. Trying to use the picture clues, they just can't understand why the kittens aren't enjoying swimming and being locked in the cupboard! Thank goodness - Knight to the rescue not only in reading them their babysitting instructions, but also in bringing a book to help them read!

A clever tale about misunderstandings. Pre-readers will certainly understand the dragons dilemmas and frustrations!

This was cute but not great

The idea for this book is cute. In the story a family decides to visit the art museum (presumably for the first time) and the book follows their visit through the museum with complaints and good times. Even though there are complaints in the beginning, everyone is glad they visited the museum in the end. The book is very low on actual content. The writing is done through the bubbles of each person speaking. There is no real information about the art or a museum and how to visit one. Since I have worked for art museums most of my life, I would have like to see something with more helpful information or some educational content along with the fun conversation between the family members otherwise when you have read it once, there is no reason to ever pick it up again.

Educate and Inspire a New Generation of Museum Patrons

Following a family on their first trip to the art museum (Son: "I can't go. "Dinosaurs and Dragons" is on! Dad: "You're going." Sound familiar?) this book takes the reader on a relatable, humorous field trip. The art is introduced by degrees, and in the end, everyone is nearly ecstatic that they went. Beginning with primitive art, the reader follow the family through Egyptian artifacts, Greek statues ("Wow! A nude Frisbee player.), European Arms and Armor, the Renaissance, Impressionism, up through Andy Warhol. Of particular interest to parents and educators, the "More About the Art" section in the back gives descriptions and brief explanations of each of the specific pieces of art depicted in the book, and offers tips for enjoying an art museum.

Marc Brown's soft, colored-pencil and watercolor illustrations are carefully, thoughtfully drawn. Each page features at least one real, specific piece of art which has either been rendered in illustration with careful attention to detail, or, if the publisher was able to acquire printing rights (a sticky wicket in the case of famous art), they have been printed as photographs within the illustration. For example, in the Renaissance Gallery, a photograph of the actual painting "The Battle of San Romano" by Paolo di Dono is shown, but a rendering based on the painting "Saint George and the Dragon" by Raphael is used.

This book is in no way a comprehensive art study, nor was it intended to be: thirty-two pages is not a lot of space to cover an entire art museum, but if the goal is to educate children and (hopefully) inspire them to go to a real art museum, then Visiting the Museum succeeds admirably on both counts.

This is an EXCELLENT book for children as well as parents. It covers artwork from New Guinea to Mexico, artists such as Renoir, Cassatt, Rousseau, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Pollack, Picasso and Warhol, silver items by Paul Revere and various sculptures. Works from Primitive to Twentieth Century. A must-have book for parents who wish to share their enthusiasm, and prepare their children for a visit to the art museum.

Q: You started your career as a journalist and your first book is a travelogue about going around the world. Is YA literature a departure for you?

Gayle Forman: Actually, it’s more of a homecoming. My first writing job was at Seventeen, where I spent five years on staff and as a contributor reporting the magazine’s social-issues stories. I loved writing for teens then because—contrary to popular opinion—they really care about serious issues (from child soldiers in Africa to kids embroiled in the drug war here) and the engage in their reading with such passion. So, now that I’m writing young-adult literature, it feels like I’ve come full circle.

Q: This book explores some serious themes. Why is this a book for kids and not adults?

GF: It’s a book for kids precisely because it explores serious themes. Teenagers are grappling with choices about life and love as much as adults, so why shouldn’t their reading reflect that? I don’t set out to write YA. It just seems like I’m drawn to stories about young people. That said, I think If I Stay is for adults, too. I love the idea of teens reading this book and then handing it off to their parents.

Q: Many key characters are serious musicians, and songs are referenced throughout the book. Are you a musician?

GF: No. Except for piano lessons when I was a kid and a brief spate of guitar playing in my teens, I’ve never played an instrument. I am, however, a huge music fan. And my husband is a musician; he was playing in a punk band when we met, so I’ve spent a lot of my life ensconced in that scene. I seem drawn to writing about musicians, though I’ve never been all that interested in the cello until Mia popped into my head.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?

GF: Music. Oregon. People I have loved. And unfortunately, the book is inspired by a real-life tragedy that happened several years ago.

Q: This is a book about death, but it’s not depressing. Why is that?

GF: Maybe because it’s really about the power of love—of family, friends, music—and therefore it ultimately affirms life.

Bittersweet Memory

If I Stay is a bittersweet memory of a family and their loved ones. It's told through the eyes of Mia, who watches herself being treated in the hospital as her loved ones surround her. And she has to make the toughest choice of all...

I really love the way the story was told, while Mia is watching over her own body in the hospital she is reminded of memories of her family and friends and through that we got to know them better. It was beautiful how the story of her life unfolds. I absolutely adored her family and friends, everyone was their own character with specific traits and quirks, and what a loving family as well! That made me that much more emotionally invested in the story, they seemed so real.

For as much as this book falls into the heartbreaking and sad category it was actually rather funny at times! It made the book so much easier for me to read. I also loved how much music played a part of the story, Mia with her cello, her boyfriend Adam with his band and her father's days in a band as well. Music was a beautiful background for this story.

All in all a bittersweet and rewarding book! I'm not always one for sad books but recently I've been finding out that there are some I actually really love and this is definitely one of them!

I wanted to love this story

After reading all the reviews here, I was expecting to read a beautiful, masterful, moving story. Instead, what I got was the distinct feeling that I was reading a Young Adult book geared towards the 12-16 year old female demographic. Warning: This may be the harshest review I've ever written about anything. Ever. So don't read on if you've decided you're going to feel personally offended by an opposing viewpoint.

I understand that this tale is being told through the voice of a teen girl, hence the naive and youthful tone, but I really feel it could've been done in a more lyrical, artistic way. I was expecting something along the lines of Alice Sebold's "The Lovely Bones" -- which was literary art. It was transcendent. However, listening to Mia's "thoughts" was like nails on a chalkboard for me. Listening to a pretentious 17-year-old girl who lacks any real depth because her life has been SO charmed really grated on my nerves. I didn't care about any of the characters -- none were particularly likable because they were all so cliche'd and caricature-ish. I was irritated to the point of exhaustion by constantly hearing how awesomely fun and rad and liberal the parents were (it's like, WE GET IT ALREADY! The parents were ex-rock star hipsters! How surprising and unexpected!). And Mia's boyfriend is a handsome and famous rock star himself who -- gasp! -- surprises everyone by actually falling in love with her even though she's just a "nerdy" Juilliard-bound classical musician! Wow, what a hip dichotomy! Mia's backstory reads like a condescending junior-high romance novel, or a very bad Nickleodeon sitcom.

The whole story came off as juvenile, amateurish, one-dimensional, incredibly cheesy (especially the parts that were meant to tug at the heart strings), way too obvious, and full of tired stereotypes. I couldn't get into it but forced myself to get to the last page, because I held out hope 'til the bitter end that this story might somehow redeem itself and resolve in a beautiful or unexpected way. I was sadly mistaken.

I breezed through this book BUT

My personal opinion is that the ending of this book was too abrupt. It was very off putting and if I had read this book prior to being able to get the second book in series I would have been really displeased with the author. I think there is a way to leave a character waiting for a reader and then there is a drop and run and I just did not like it at all. The book is very repetitive but an easy summer read.

About the Author
Monica Wellington was born in London and lived in Europe until she moved tothe United States at age seven. As a child she always loved to draw andpaint, but it wasn't until she went to college that she realized she wantedto be an artist for her profession. She went to the University of Michigan'sSchool of Art to earn her BFA and studied pottery, painting and printmaking.After art school, while traveling and living in a number of differentcountries, she had various art related jobs, which were all good backgroundand preparation for doing children's books.She has both written and illustrated the majority of her books. She says,"I usually start a book visually, with an idea of what I want to paintpictures about. The pictures may come first before the words for me. Boththe pictures and words go through many revisions, and I am often stillworking on the final words after I finish the pictures."She says that doing children?s books is great. "I get to have a job where Ispend my days doing totally what I love to do. And it is very gratifyingthat my work goes out into the world and is shared with other people. Ifeel incrediably lucky for all this!"Since 1994 she has taught illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Shelives in New York City with her daughter Lydia.

Great For Boys That Love Trucks & Cars

This book is absolutely fantastic for small kids that love trucks, buses, cars, boats, construction equipment, etc. It has every kind of transportation in it that I can think of. Best of all, it provides an opportunity for parents to teach kids where food comes from. I bought this for my 2 year old son and he adores it. He looks at this book every night for at least a 1/2 hour before bed until I take it away.

My 23 month old son loves this book! I am buying it after we ran out of renewals at the library. The really brilliant thing is that there is a page near the end which lists the various trucks and their names.

My 2 1/2 year-old son's FAVORITE new book!

I had to write a review for this book because my son loves it so much. I'm here on Amazon buying it because we've exhausted our renewals of it at the public library, and I knew it was a keeper when he kept asking to sleep with it. The text is simple for my 2 1/2 year old son to understand, and he loves seeing how Tom transports fruits and vegetables from a farm out in the country to a big city many states away. It's made him so much more aware of all the trucks he sees on the highway now. The illustrations are so simple and sweet, and, like many others have said, my son LOVES the page at the end that has a picture of every type of vehicle in the book. His absolute FAVORITE is the car carrier, and he points it out every time and just loves it. He calls this his "Tommy book" and I'm glad we stumbled upon it. Definitely on my list of must-read for any little boy who's into trucks, cars, tractors or vehicles of any kind!

Author Jose ( Papers Nautilus ), who is also the cultural counselor at the Australian embassy in Beijing, offers up a portrait of a late-'80s China as enigmatic as it is frenetic, where life is ruled by irony and riddles. Wally Frith is an Australian oncologist whose wife has recently died of cancer; grieving and feeling mocked by his own professional concerns, Wally arranges a stint at the Peking Union Medical College, the most Western of China's medical centers, with hopes of meeting professor Hsu Chien Lung, who years before had performed revolutionary cancer research. Discovering a glittering expatriate circle, socializing with natives and enamored of a beautiful and intelligent local woman, Wally develops a taste for such Chinese puzzles as qigong , "the breathing power." His curiosity thus educated, Wally is slowly prepared to unravel the mysteries woven by his Peking Union colleagues concerning Hsu's whereabouts. If Jose's prose is intermittently cloying ("Their bodies were coated in silver scales of moonshine") and his narrative somewhat overdetermined, his panoramic grasp of his subject more than compensates. A weighted silence envelops the subject of the Tiananmen Square massacres; although the bloody events are yet to occur as this novel ends, they loom throughout as a final irony, for the Avenue of Eternal Peace leads into the infamous square.

Cancer researcher Wally Frith journeys from his native Australia to China, where he hopes to meet another specialist who did innovative work in the 1930s. But Wally also has more personal reasons for traveling. He wants to visit the country where his missionary grandparents once lived, and he needs to escape from a home suffused with memories of his late wife. Although Wally is the focus, many characters both Chinese and Western populate this novel. The author's knowledge of China and its people provides a glimpse of Oriental life. At the same time his deft characterizations demonstrate dramatically the everyday joys and struggles that all people share. The growing discontent of young students with corrupt government leaders forms the background for the story, which ends shortly before the terrible events of Tiananmen Square. This is Jose's third novel, and the first to be published in the United States.
