Another Great Jordan Read
By A. Nathaniel Wallace, Jr.
Another fine work by the late great Robert Jordan. I read this book as part of a three part Conan omnibus, this being the third work in the omnibus.

All I can say is how in awe I am of Conan the Barbarian! He can do anything that he puts his mind to. Indomitable and tenacious, Conan will do whatever it takes to save a damsel in distress while slaying her said tormenter. In this book Conan embarks on a quest to destroy the evil Cult of Doom. It is this cult that seeks to bring the Turanian Empire under its sway. However, its wizard does not count on having Conan stand in his way.

Conan journeys to Hyrkania for a magical object that can bring balance in favor of those opposing the order. In order to succede, Conan must battle pirates, assassins, nomads and hideous monsters and then prevail over the tempests of the Vialyet Sea. But prevail he does and woe to any who stand against the Cimmerian. Those who do are cut down in ruthless savagery.

The scenes described in Agrahpur were realistic and precise in prose. Jordan's descriptions have always been precise. He is second to none in the Conan Genre. He may not have created it but he did perfect it. My one quibble with Jordan is that he tended to be quite verbose when going deep into prose; he used words that were difficult to understand. I took the SAT, but the words he used were never on any of my vocabulary lists! Despite this, I loved the book and the characters even more.

Seeing Esmira enslave Davinia in the book's end brought a shock of surprise to my system at firt, but I realize it was a woman's revenge against she who had intended to kill her. Davinia was sold to a brothel. She went from being the concubine of one of the most powerful men in the empire to being nothing but a slut in a whore house. Esmira was ruthless to Davinia! Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned.

Get this book and you won't be dissapointed.

A. Nathaniel Wallace, Jr.

Just ok.
By Dan Dean
This was my third of Jordan's Conan Books, and, unfortunately, my least favorite. All three were nearly identical... so maybe I was just bored at this point and you may well think I am nuts. But frankly, I recommend you skip this one unless you plan to read EVERY Conan book ever written.
In CONAN the UNCONQUERED, the barbarian once again arrives in a new city looking for a way to fill his pockets with gold and manages to end up knee deep in trouble. As usual, he does some bar crawling, sleeps with some gorgeous women, and after a variety of brawls, he of course stops the evil wizard.
-If you are looking for more "Wheel of Time" you are likely to be disappointed -but it is fun watching Jordan hone his skills.
-As far as Conan goes, I hear R E Howard's works are the best -so you might want to look there instead. That's next for me as well.

Howard would be proud!
By A Customer
Well, if you don't already know who Robert Jordan is please ask whoever it is that has kept you locked in that closet to buy you the entire Wheel of Time series--and this book of course--before inserting you back into that dark, miserable vault. Then read them all voraciously. You will not be disappointed, with this or any of the other many books Mr. Jordan has written. This book in particular is probably the best Conan novel I have read in a great many moons. Why you ask? Well, the plotting is crisp and fast moving, the prose and dialogue effectively create action in the reader's mind, and as all of us RJ sycophants have come to expect, the characterizations are well done and extremely believable. A great book.

Amazon.com Review
High adventure in three marvelously mystical worlds from the master of quest fantasy, Lloyd Alexander! Together for the first time in one hefty volume are three of Alexander's best-loved novels: The Arkadians, The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen, and The Iron Ring. Packed with humor, details, wisdom, and even a moral or two (although Alexander is as far from sanctimonious as can be), each story follows a hero as he embarks on a quest--one through mythic Greece to escape a death sentence, another through medieval China in search of a utopian kingdom, and a third through ancient India to fulfill his duty to honor. A cast of Chaucerian characters accompanies each hero, from a bewitched poet-turned-talking-jackass to a highly principled thief to an eagle with an attitude and a scaredy-cat elephant...and always, the smart young woman who takes loving pity on our sometimes-bumbling hero. Truly epic, each novel is made up of myriad stories within stories, guaranteed to enthrall readers of all ages for hours at a time. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

Alexander's best standalones
By EA Solinas
Lloyd Alexander is best known for his award-winning Prydain series, then for the Vesper Holly adventures and the Westmark trilogy. Aside from these, he has also written a lot of sparkling standalone adventures, drawing from cultures all around the world.
"The Arkadians" takes place in a vaguely Grecian setting, when a young boy flees evil fortunetellers and a hot-tempered king. He soon teams up with a talking donkey and a witty magical girl, to find the mysterious Lady.
"The Remarkable Journey of Prince Jen" follows a young Chinese prince and his sharp-tongued servant, who travel to a beautiful land to ask the king of it how he governs so well. The result is a quest that teaches Jen a few things...
"The Iron Ring" concerns a young Indian king who recklessly gambles away his kingdom, wealth, and life to a stranger, and an iron ring appears on his finger. He must travel to a distant kingdom with his companions before his lesson is truly learned.
Alexander's casts often include similar characters: the flawed hero who needs to learn something on the way, the odd and often self-deprecating sidekick, and the girl with wit and intelligence and little patience with needless idiocy. Additionally, in these particular stories there are often old myths and legends from their respective cultures scattered through the plot.
Though for sheer pathos and scope these books do not match the Prydain Chronicles, they are nevertheless great stories by a master storyteller.

Clever fun, fun cleverness
By Owl
These are very good books that I would have liked to encounter as a youngster. The others don't quite measure up to the high standard set by The Arkadians, but the whole thing is worth getting just for it. The clever combining of all of the most familiar Greek tales into one adventure in Arkadians has to be read to be appreciated.

Alexander's wonderous worlds
By Dan Cram Olsen
I had not read or even heard of Lloyd Alexander until just last year. Enjoying fine fantasy and quality Young Adult works as I do, I am glad I finally found him. He creates such sympathetic characters is the most interesting worlds and cultures. Having three books in one gave me the opportunity to see the consistency of his wonder filled writing. I also love that his books really are Young People friendly. One can read this to and recommend it to all ages and I do.

Billy Bloom is gay, but it’s mostly theoretical, as he hasn’t had much experience. When he has to move to Florida, he can’t believe his bad luck. His new school is a mix of Bible Belles, Aberzombies, and Football Heroes, none of which are exactly his type. Billy’s efforts to fit in and stand out at the same time are both hilarious and heartrending. In this novel from adult author and media personality James St. James, readers are in for a wild ride as he tells Billy’s fascinating story of bravado, pain, and unexpected love, inspired by his own experiences.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 9 Up—Teenage drag queen Billy Bloom explodes onto the conservative scene at Eisenhower Academy, where he finds love and a band of blond sadists. St. James tells the oldest story in the book, the one where an outcast seeks the homecoming crown, only this time a queen wants to be Queen. Billy's bold, bawdy narration makes Freak Show not only cohesive but also immensely entertaining. Readers will relish his conversational voice, naughty humor, celebrity put-downs, unabashed exuberance, and ALL CAPS expletives. Beneath the sequins, feathers, and foundation, Billy nurses an ardent desire for acceptance. Teens will quickly identify with his worries and needs, even as he dons lip gloss and a beehive wig. Billy shirks labels (he calls himself a "Gender Obscurist"), and this book also refuses to be defined by sexuality. Yes, Billy falls for another boy, and yes, they do kiss. Teens will find this romance fresh and fun, but they will also enjoy exploring complicated issues of empowerment, bigotry, self-esteem, and fear. Freak Show visits these difficult regions of adolescence with gracious candor and humor. More buoyant than weighty, this book flows as a fast-paced, snarky story of high school horrors. Mature readers will love St. James's playful rendition of a conventional American tale.—Shelley Huntington, New York Public Library

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7 -Alli begins seventh grade with her mom's underwear clinging to her pants. The most undesirable guy in the class, Jeremy, not only notices, but also refuses to forget. Alli goes on to journal the ups and downs of her year as she struggles with relationships and feelings. She constantly is either keeping a diary or instant messaging; the whole story is told through her writings. Central to her thoughts is becoming part of the most popular girl's small circle of friends, thus turning away from her longtime best friend. The story is fairly predictable, but Myracle's insights into a seventh-grade girl's insecurities and feelings make this a fun read with some real truths.-Debbie Whitbeck, West Ottawa Public Schools, Holland, MI

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. Twelve-year-old Allison had hoped that seventh grade would be the year that she "finally stopped being invisible." But her first day of school brings more attention than she wished for: she unknowingly arrives with her mother's underwear clinging to her pant leg. Her "fashion disaster" has unexpected consequences when Rachel, queen of the popular clique, defends Allison against her classmates. Allison has conflicting feelings about her closest friend, Kathy, whose frequent jabs hurt her feelings, and she is more confused when Kathy accuses her of being a "wanna-be" in Rachel's clique. Myracle captures the stomach-twisting anxiety of middle-school friendship with spot-on details. Allison tells her own story in a diary filled with sharply authentic emotions that many kids will recognize: "I wish I were anyone but me." Supported by family members whom she finds both comforting and annoying, Allison finally learns to rely on her own instincts. Readers negotiating changing friendships of their own will find themselves in this honest, comical tour of middle school. Gillian Engberg

1 of the BEST books I have ever read!!!:)
By A Customer
Wow! I loved this book because of how true it was. I think that every girl, far and wide, can somehow relate to Alli (a seventh grader in this story) and that reading about Alli makes them so much more comfortable knowing that they aren't alone in the huge, scary place called junior high. Just remember, this is modern day junior high, so there are some curse words. I suggest that your child be at least 12 before reading this book.

Overall: A good, realistic book that any girl can relate to. But, because of the few curse words, this book is aimed at girls 12 and up.

Read it. Read it. READ IT! :)))))))))))))))))))
By Willow Finn
I bough this book a year ago: the summer before 7th grade.
I realize that the age recommendation may be misleading (10+) but I feel like young girls enjoy reading about older girls.
Parents: if you don't want your child to read this book then that is okay. There is some sexual content, adult concepts, and foul language. However, I personally thought it was an excellent read. My 7th grade year was very similar to this and I have reread this book many times. Its funny, light-hearted, and it is a page-turner.
If you don't want your child to read this or you don't want to read it then fine. But I think that books are for everyone and times have changed. It isn't the 1970s anymore and teen books have more mature content. While reading this review, keep in mind how many books have been banned from our shelves. Literature is art and no one is forcing you to read this book. But I HIGHLY RECOMMEND it.
In conclusion, have a heart, share a book, give this a thumbs up, and thank god for Lauren Myracle: best author ever. Iife isn't all lollipops and rainbows, read stuff that relates to you!
and don't forget to smile!

Wow, I'm so out of the loop.

I haven't been in seventh grade for a while, but are you sure this is what the majority of seventh graders are up to these days? My personal experience with kids tells me twelve-year-olds are more innocent and less malicious than the characters in the books are. I didn't really pay attention to any sexual references or bad words, but it did surprise me that a book for middle school kids would actually contain phrases like "Oh my God" and "for God's sake." I am by no means religious or offended, but I know authors for middle school kids had to stick with "Oh my gosh" and "for Pete's sake" when I was in seventh grade. The time it's a-changin'.

The writing itself is not bad. In fact, I picked up this book because I thought Lauren Myracle knew how to write for young readers (for disappointed parents, I would recommend her other book Eleven, which I thought was cute and more age-appropriate than this one). I had to skip all the IM conversations, though. I thought I could escape chatspeak when I'm not using the Internet, but apparently I was wrong. My main complaint is that the ending is a cliffhanger. See, that might work if you were writing the eighth book in the whole dear-diary series and you already have your loyal fans eagerly waiting for the next book, but it would probably be a wiser move to make the story more conclusive if you're only writing the first book.

All-in-all, something I would read for fun that I definitely wouldn't recommend to actual seventh-graders. I agree with the reviewer who said that kids may get mixed messages if they read this book. There should be more real consequences to every action that we know is bad and shouldn't do that we all do anyway.

American Character: A History of the Epic Struggle Between Individual Liberty and the Common Good, by Colin Woodard

The author of American Nations examines the history of and solutions to the key American question: how best to reconcile individual liberty with the maintenance of a free society

The struggle between individual rights and the good of the community as a whole has been the basis of nearly every major disagreement in our history, from the debates at the Constitutional Convention and in the run up to the Civil War to the fights surrounding the agendas of the Federalists, the Progressives, the New Dealers, the civil rights movement, and the Tea Party. In American Character, Colin Woodard traces these two key strands in American politics through the four centuries of the nation’s existence, from the first colonies through the Gilded Age, Great Depression and the present day, and he explores how different regions of the country have successfully or disastrously accommodated them. The independent streak found its most pernicious form in the antebellum South but was balanced in the Gilded Age by communitarian reform efforts; the New Deal was an example of a successful coalition between communitarian-minded Eastern elites and Southerners.

Woodard argues that maintaining a liberal democracy, a society where mass human freedom is possible, requires finding a balance between protecting  individual liberty and nurturing a free society. Going to either libertarian or collectivist extremes results in tyranny. But where does the “sweet spot” lie in the United States, a federation of disparate regional cultures that have always strongly disagreed on these issues? Woodard leads readers on a riveting and revealing journey through four centuries of struggle, experimentation, successes and failures to provide an answer. His historically informed and pragmatic suggestions on how to achieve this balance and break the nation’s  political deadlock will be of interest to anyone who cares about the current American predicament—political, ideological, and sociological.

Review

“Woodard, an award-winning journalist for the Portland Press-Herald in Maine, is a terrific writer, and his range is impressive. His musings about the impact of Ayn Rand on American conservatism or a day spent in the terrifying blackness of Nicolae Ceausescu's crumbling Romanian dictatorship are elegant set pieces.”
—David Oshinsky, Washington Post

“An illuminating national portrait at a particularly divisive time.”
—Downeast

“Woodard’s treatise is a must-read for anyone grappling with how we arrived at the present moment . . . Although the prose is effortlessly accessible to a general audience, the manuscript could easily serve as a textbook in a number of different disciplines: history, economics, political science and psychology, just to name a few.”
—Bowling Green (Ky.) Daily News

“A deep analysis of the history of the common good versus individual rights. . . . A healthy democracy needs to balance the two; either one alone leads to disaster. . . . American Character adds a further prism to the public-private spectrum. ‘The struggle for freedom is not bilateral, but instead triangular,’ Woodard writes. ‘The participants are the state, the people, and the would-be aristocracy or oligarchy. Liberal democracy . . . relies on keeping these three forces in balance.’ The history of that struggle is a big-dipper ride through four centuries as first collectivists then individualists take their turn at managing the country. Lurking just below the surface are always mirrors reflecting our own times. . . . Woodard’s essential thesis is vital to understand.”
—Thomas Urquhart, Portland Press-Herald

“Woodard builds on his previous analysis of the country’s regional differences to focus on the conflict between individualism and collectivism that defines our national character. As in his previous book, the author . . . maintains, ‘our country has never been united, either in purpose, principles, or political behavior. We’ve never been a nation-state in the European sense, but rather a federation of nations’ like the European Union. . . . Although we have inherited a legacy of revolution against a king, making us ‘vigilant against the rise of an overarching government that might deny us our individual potential,’ Woodard sees that the vast majority of Americans believe that the ‘American Way’ means ‘pursuing happiness through a free and fair competition between individuals.’ Politicians must reassure voters that fairness is ‘the central issue of our political discourse’ by proposing tax reforms and investments in education that ‘would help keep the playing field even.’ . . . Thoughtful political theory for divisive times.”
—Kirkus Reviews

Praise for American Nations

“[American Nations] sets itself apart by delving deep into history to trace our current divides to ethno-cultural differences that emerged during the country's earliest settlement.”
—The New Republic (Editors’ Picks: Best Books of 2011)

“[A] compelling and informative attempt to make sense of the regional divides in North America in general and this country in particular . . . Woodard provides a bracing corrective to an accepted national narrative that too often overlooks regional variations to tell a simpler and more reassuring story.”
—The Washington Post

“Mr. Woodard’s approach is breezier than [David Hackett] Fischer’s and more historical than [Joel] Garreau’s, but he has earned a place on the shelf between them.”
—The Wall Street Journal

“A smart read that feels particularly timely now, when so many would claim a mythically unified Founding Fathers as their political ancestors.”
—Boston Globe

“[In] offering us a way to better understand the forces at play in the rumpus room of current American politics, Colin Woodard has scored a true triumph.”
—Newsweek/The Daily Beast

“Woodard makes a worthwhile contribution by offering an accessible, well-researched analysis with appeal to both casual and scholarly readers.”
—Library Journal

“For people interested in American history and sociology, American Nations demands reading.”
—St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“[A] fascinating new take on our history. . . ”
—The Christian Science Monitor

Although its alleged purpose was “the promotion of the common good, ” it “yielded instead collective misery” (28)
By Daniel W. Crofts
Colin Woodard’s new book is a sequel to his American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures in North America, which gained wide attention when published five years ago. He tried to explain there why disagreements about fundamentals have persisted in the United States. Searching back to the first European settlements of the seventeenth century, he showed how antagonistic ideas about a proper social order produced sharply divergent colonial regimes. In New England’s intensely democratic towns, local self-government harnessed and restrained individual striving to secure a larger community well-being. South Carolina’s slave plantations, by contrast, allowed the rich and powerful an unfettered pursuit of individual advantage.

Sprightly and historically informed, American Nations showed how these and other regional cultures competed against each other. No unitary national culture could result; the outcome always has been contested and plural. In effect, New England and the Deep South each searched for allies, with the pivotal “midlands” of New Jersey-Pennsylvania and points west positioned to determine who would control the presidency and Congress. Andrew Jackson thus led a political coalition that prized individual endeavor and feared a powerful central government, while Abraham Lincoln led a coalition that wanted government to promote economic development and secure equal rights and opportunities.

Woodard’s American Character argues that both polar paradigms—hyper-collective and hyper-individualistic—are dystopian. As a college student, he saw first-hand how the malignant Nicolae CeauÅŸescu turned Romania into a ghastly police state. Although its alleged purpose was “the promotion of the common good,” it “yielded instead collective misery” (28). But those traumatized by the collectivist nightmare, notably novelist Ayn Rand and Wichita oil magnate Fred Koch, concocted “an extreme individualist creed” that prized the pursuit of “rapacious self-interest” (38). Their obsessions about a too-powerful state blinded them to the way that weak states become despotisms dominated by the rich and powerful.

As in American Nations, Woodard grounds his case in history. New England gave priority to “individual self-denial,” with community power enlisted to restrain “the avarice of individuals.” Yankees had “faith in government and public institutions.” They prized education and “intellectual achievement” and they built public schools (62-63). By contrast, “the Deep South in the antebellum period was an extreme individualist’s dream.” It most valued “the freedom to own slaves.” It favored minimalist government and low taxes, and it denied any public responsibility for education (47, 49, 51).

Woodard notes that modern libertarians generally find it impolitic to celebrate the slave South. They look instead to an imagined sugar-coated utopia in the late nineteenth century’s Gilded Age, when laissez-faire ideologies maximized the realm of private endeavor and kept government small. From a libertarian perspective, the two Roosevelts undermined these happy arrangements by championing a dangerous, intrusive national state that infringed on property rights, raised taxes, and coddled loafers.

Woodard makes plain his own Rooseveltian preferences—what he dubs “national liberalism”—“a free market society overseen by an active, equality-seeking government” (157). This took shape in the 1930s and provided the foundation for the postwar expansion of the middle class. Its potential benefits were widened in the 1960s to better include African-Americans and women. But the political coalition that sustained national liberalism came unhinged amid the domestic and international crises of the 1960s, and it has been in retreat ever since.

The “laissez-faire right,” seemingly discredited by Barry Goldwater’s resounding defeat in 1964, embarked on a long march to build “its political and intellectual resources” (192). During the next fifty years, the fringe movement of 1964 moved to center stage. It gradually gained control of the Republican Party, where its ideological strait jacket has become a non-negotiable test of partisan allegiance. It has repeatedly slashed taxes on the rich and allowed the public sphere to deteriorate. Its dominance in the South is nearly absolute. It now controls both houses of Congress and a majority of state legislatures. The Speaker of the House and many of his rank-and-file are explicit devotees of Ayn Rand. Two Koch sons have invested heavily to make the party do their bidding.

But Woodard is convinced that the right has overreached and that its quest to recreate an imagined laissez-faire utopia cannot be the basis for a national majority coalition. He suggests instead that a new majority coalition can be created, based on a commitment to fairness and a widened equality of opportunity. The new majority will define itself in opposition to “the Deep South’s tradition of hierarchical libertarianism” (262). And it will not hesitate to raise taxes on those who have won an undeserved lion’s share in the new Gilded Age.

Woodard’s American Character is painted with a broader brush than American Nations. His purpose here is to explore the implications of his earlier analysis. He predicts, but he says little about how his predictions might be implemented. He could say more about why economic inequality widened after 1970, and how this trend might be reversed. He does not explain why issues such as guns and abortion so often eclipse what he might see as rational economic interest. He also could be more explicit about the coded racial scapegoating that suffuses all the never-ending complaints about taxes, health care, deficits, and immigrants.

Historians, including this one, will continue to prefer American Nations. But Woodard’s American Character seems keenly prescient in the spring of 2016 as the Republican Party flails helplessly while its ideological chickens come home to roost.

One of the best books I have read
By doug korty
This is a phenomenal book. It is a readable book but a complex book that requires serious reading. It isn’t just a great book, it is a significant book that deserves to be read by many people and discussed widely. The ideas of this book should lead to many other people’s articles and books. Much of the history and discussion in this book is already known but the author gives it fresh life and meaning by the way he presents it and organizes it. He writes extremely well and thinks extremely well.

Woodard’s analysis of America, coming from his previous book American Nations, breaks the country into 11 regions:

Yankeedom
New Netherland
The Midlands
Tidewater
Greater Appalachia
Deep South
El Norte
the Left Coast
The Far West
First Nation
New France

These regions are defined and delineated based on a variety of characteristics: dialect maps, material culture regions, religious regions, political geography, maps of patterns of settlement, , votes for same sex marriage, in 2008, 2004 and 2008 election votes, people who answered “American” to the ancestry question in the census (high % in Appalachia), importance of religion, education level, states with carbon trading pacts, states with laws banning labor union shop contracts, counties voting Democratic or Republican.

The theme of the book is about the “epic struggle between individual liberty and the common good”. There are two introductory chapters and five historical chapters going from 1607 to the current period, and a conclusion, A Lasting Union.

Woodard is extremely knowledgeable and doesn’t miss much in his history or analysis. One of the reviews faults him for not being objective. He doesn’t claim to be non partisan, he is clearly a progressive Democrat arguing for the strongest commitment to fairness and equal opportunity. He is not a socialist or a social democrat nor does he see social democracy in our future. My only suggestion is that the book could have had more maps or descriptions of the regions to help the reader understand the discussions about regions, especially in the final chapter.

This is an exceptionally good book that anyone interested in democracy and the future of our country should read.

Informative historical review of regional American political tendencies - more ...
By Michael F. Bouscaren
Informative historical review of regional American political tendencies - more critical of oligarchical failures to make opportunity equal; scant criticism of big government's costly inefficiencies and its futile tendency instead somehow to try to make people, not opportunity, equal.
Facile linkage of political initiatives with concurrent economic change, as if politicians actually directly drive economic activity.
Woodard's conclusion focuses on strategies to make red states blue, thereby bald-facing his transparent political biases throughout, which for the reader regrettably call the validity of his analysis into question.

From Publishers Weekly
In his humorous illustrations and well-conceived text, New Yorker cartoonist Fradon ( Harold the Herald ; Sir Dana: A Knight ) displays a wit that would do honor to any sharp medieval or renaissance fool, the subjects of his jovial account. The chatty narrator is Frambert, a 16th-century jester who springs into action from a display case in the medieval room of a museum. Frambert introduces a group of students to the tradition of buffoonery and offers anecdotal portraits of a handful of actual 16th- and 17th-century fools. Fradon uses a clever system of simplified footnotes (designated by colored dots rather than by numbers) to provide additional information, historical facts and definitions of unfamiliar words or period terms without encumbering his perky text. Also supplementing the narrative are numerous dialogue balloons (containing fools' rhymes and sallies) worked into cartoon-style pictures. Diverting descriptions of pranks and forms of entertainment typically performed by fools--including food fights and mock jousts--add to the fun. Ages 8-12.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Cartoonist Fradon takes a lighthearted look at an often misunderstood and misrepresented figure. He presents a clear, enjoyable narrative told by Frambert, a jester doll who comes to life. Clever conversation, jokes, and pertinent facts combine for a lively portrait of history's early comedians. Simple footnotes define unusual terms such as "hey nonny nonny," "poet laureate," and jest books. Also included are several well-known fools, such as Will Sommers and Querno. Humorous watercolor cartoons appear on every page. The text and drawings are nicely balanced. A great addition to collections on the Middle Ages.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-7. Laughter is also part of history, in the castle and in the street. The initial device of this book is cumbersome--a statue of a Renaissance court fool steps out of a museum case to tell contemporary kids about jesters of his time--but the humor and humanity of the subject will grab readers, especially since New Yorker cartoonist Fradon enlivens his text with wild, colorful drawings and droll one-liners. He's frank about the dark side of the story--some fools were disabled, cruelly mocked, and ridiculed as freaks for everyone's entertainment. But many were smart and daring, using their wit to earn their keep and to amuse and inform the powerful. He tells particular stories: the sixteenth-century fool Caillete who died for love; the woman fool Mathurine who liked to parade through the streets of Paris dressed as an Amazon; the dwarf fool Querno who was a poet, musician, and wit. Fradon also throws in an occasional mock-heroic "thou" and "forsooth" to add to the fun ("I fear not! My heart is cool.") and unobtrusively footnotes historical references. Acrobatics, doggerel verse, riddles, food fights, dress-ups, put-downs, and all the ragtag costumery of street theater were as much fun then as they are now; so is the joy of putting on a show. Fools and Folly: for the younger set.
By Susan Long
Dana Fradon's book is quite fabulous! After researching the history of folly myself, I was pleased to find that all of Dana Fradon's stories about historical personages such as Will Somers, etc., aligns accurately with the existing documentation. I only wish that such well-written, enjoyable, imaginatively-illustrated juvenile literature had been more available when I was younger! If you know of a budding history buff, send Dana Fradon's work their way immediately!

Witty, engaging and beautifully illustrated
By Barry J. Connolly
Another witty and well-done book by noted author and artist Dana Fradon. The illustrations are bright and engaging and the content a revelation. Who knew that medieval "fools" were such influential statesmen! What a wonderful way to introduce young people to medieval history. This and similar books by the author are, regrettably, now out of print, but with a little diligence can be found on the used book market. Well worth the search. Mr. Fradon is also recognized internationally as a cartoonist of renown, his works appearing in many publications -- including the New Yorker Magazine.

No Foolin' !
By Charles L. Duval
This is one of the best books on Jesters I've yet run across. Told for children and delightfully illustrated, this little book runs the gamut of the world of Court Jesters, and is great starting point for anyone who is interested on this beloved, yet little discussed, icons of the Middle Ages.

In which one can learn all of the important words and phrases in the Hundred Acre Wood
By Amazon Customer
You can never have too much knowledge, in life. You can especially never have too much knowledge of Winnie the Pooh and his world, the Hundred Acre Wood.

A.R. Melrose did something that, as far as I know, no one has ever attempted before, in the history of A. A. Milne's beloved world and characters. He made an adorable and yet helpful Pooh Dictionary.

This small but valuable book contains not only traditional words, their definitions, and parts of speech, but also places, events, characters, and phrases that are used throughout the Pooh series of books. All of this wonderful and amusing information is backed up by quotes, black and white drawings by Ernest H. Shepard, and references with title and page number of the quoted information.

This is a well constructed book that would make the perfect gift for any fan of Pooh, Piglet, Eeyore, Owl, Kanga, Roo, Rabbit, or Christopher Robin. I would highly recommend it to everyone. It will be cherished as a wonderful companion to the series for many generations to come.

Boring!!!!
By luvurkids
This book is really bad!!! Hans Holzer might have called himself the original "ghost hunter", but he is not a very good author. The book recounts the events leading up to the murder of the Defoe family, the subsequent arrest of the son, his confession, and then the trial and conviction. The title is truly misleading, because the book has nothing to do with possession. Just skip it!! There are so many other great reads about the murders in Amityville, so save your money and buy those!!! Happy Reading!!!

Another sad chapter in the Amityville Hoax history.
By Chadwick H. Saxelid
To understand how this strange marriage of true crime reporting and paranormal 'research' came about the reader need look no further than the dedication to William Weber. Weber was/is the defense attorney for Ron DeFeo Jr and the key conspirator of the infamous Amityville Hoax. His greasy fingerprints are all over this book, which continues to try and build a bogus case of paranormal activity driving Ron DeFeo to kill his family. Want real facts about these murders? Go to Amityvillemurders.com, it will truly open your eyes to the deceit of the 'haunting' of the house at 112 Ocean Avenue.
The biggest danger sign that I was in for more parapsychology 'fuzzy math' nonsense came in author Holzer's foreward concerning possession. In that essay Holzer gives us two examples of possession, yet concludes with this strange statement..."What I have just mentioned are two classic cases of possession. They are not actual cases, and the names mentioned are ficitious, but I can match these hypothetical cases over and over with real stories from my files." What? Two classic, yet ficitious, cases? And if these so called classic cases are ficitious then it would go without saying that the names would be ficitious as well, would it not? Also Dr. Holzer if these bogus tales match cases from you files 'over and over' why didn't you site those, especially since you are making the sloppy arguement that DeFeo was driven by paranormal forces to kill his family? Even the excessive amount of court documents you use do nothing to back up your arguements, which are so weakly presented as to be laughable. Also your poor research in the bogus 'history' of the house is even more disappointing. All of the so-called paranormal theories have been disproved over time, but people still want to believe in them, so more exploitative trash like this book will be written and sold and read. So much the sadder for those who have truly suffered from the DeFeo murders, namely the DeFeo family. Worth reading as an example of how some heartless souls will exploit a tragedy.
