The emphasis in this picture-book-size volume is on pro rather than college football. The book relates how the game changed from a rough-and-tumble league sport centered in small Midwestern cities into the corporate powerhouse that it is today. Along the way, the authors discuss rule and strategy changes and major stars who made the modern game. Lots of photographs and sidebars are included, although many fans will wish for more pictures instead of the sometimes redundant text. Of course, John Madden has become a brand name, but his distinctive voice, heard in his TV color commentary, is apparent only in his brief, somewhat confusing introduction. Most of the text is rather workmanlike, so this is recommended only for libraries needing additional material on the history of the professional sport. Great book, great info and better than older Madden books in terms of quality info

Over the years, John Madden covered mostly NFC games for CBS from 1979-94, and then again for FOX from 1994-2002. Then he went on to ABC and now NBC, on a more neutral path, again with Al Michaels. It all added up to what seemed to be too NFC biased. This probably comes from, as most fans know, the network that covers the game will be connected with the visiting team in a case of interconference games. If it's NFC vs. NFC, fine. Here's an interconference example from 1988: Minnesota Vikings at Buffalo Bills. CBS was the network since the NFC team was on the road.

Years of this caught up with Madden, which is funny because he was a Raiders (AFC) guy in the 60s and 70s. For a while, he would certainly talk up the great teams of the 80s and 90s during a broadcast - Giants, Rams, Bears, Skins, Packers, 49ers, Eagles - all from the NFC. Too much bias towards the "home" conference in my opinion. It didn't seem like he was on board or had the respect for a lot of Hall of Famers from the AFC since he didn't cover those games as much. Even his "All-Madden" teams seemed to leave off some great AFC players from that era. Despite the fact that the NFC was on the super bowl winning streak, that shouldn't be the reason to talk up the NFC: Things have changed now with the AFC winning 8/10, and it seems like an even playing field throughout the entire league. The super bowls that John Madden covered in the past seemed like he was going for home network team!!

In this book, he finally gets it right. He gives props to many great players no matter what conference they are/were from. Great photos are scattered throuout. A great source of info for the proper age group. The stories flow with ease and are very informative. The adults who may be reading this book to their kids will smile with a lot of football history and great memories.

Singing Still

I recently remembered this book during a conversation with my older brother (Kenneth Rose), so I asked him to send it to me... again. I say "again" because he gave "Only One Sky" to me as a gift in 1977. I sent it back to him after I read it the following year.

Looking through it now I can see that reading it was for me a profound experience of clarity during a pretty intellectual phase of my journey. I was "seeking" and creating "smoke around the flame" of my awakening (page 112).

Rajneesh helped me to move from being a "goal-seeker" to becoming a "celebrator" (page 84). Thanks to the gift of this book from Rajneesh and my brother, I celebrate on.

Rajneesh captures the true meaning of Tantra

If you want to deeply understand the tantric view of life and existence, this is your book. A transcript of a series of morning discourses given by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh at the Rajneesh Ashram in Poona, India, the clarity, simplicity, and directness of the presentation make it easy to understand and powerfully transformative. The vision and perspective expressed through the discourses can transform your meditation and change your life. Despite it's apparent simplicity, you will get more out of it every time you read it. This book is unfortunately out of print and it is rather hard to obtain a copy, but well worth the trouble.

nothing can beat the audio

it's not really possible to understand osho just by reading his words.

on paper, he appears mostly bland, with obvious trivial insights and amateur poetics.

in speech, he can be hypnotic, giving new life to his words, he will eventually lull you into a meditative calmness, you share in his being

nevertheless his books are good for inspiration if you need a few lines to reorient your perspective

this one is good but as mentioned the audio discourses which are available as mp3s online are much more captivating

Tell Me Who is about Molly, a sixth grader who's life is not so great. Her father is marrying The Claw, or at least that's how Molly and her best friend Tanny refer to her father's fiance. Molly and Tanny find an old looking machine that turns out to be a Who Meter. It tells you who you will marry in the future. For some strange reason only Molly can get it to work. We never do learn why only she can do it though, which I find to be a bit odd, but then again not everything needs an explanation. :) Molly finds out she's marrying this really disgusting boy and not only is he gross he's a fifth grader!! Eeew hehehe She also types in her father's name and it turns out that he really is marrying the Claw. But maybe she can change these crazy things from coming true? Hopefully just maybe.

I really liked Molly especially how she notices how people around her are changing. Like how back in fifth grade all the girls would be on one table and all the boys would be in another, now they are co-ed. Cool. :)

I thought it was pretty cute that after finding out she was going to marry a British guy, Tanna began acting a bit differently. She began talking in an accent and saying things like "bonkers" and "knickers." Those parts made me giggle quite a bit. :)

This was a cute short read and I liked reading it. It's a kids book but I find that even though I'm eighteen I liked it. I'm sure people older than 12 will enjoy it too. Many will be able to relate to her especially the father re-marrying part, best friend issues, worrying about the future, etc.

I love how reading this book reminded me of the way I was when I was twelve. This kid is so realistic!! In the book Molly and Tanny play this game called MASH, I actually remember having played that when I was her age!!! Okay so I was twelve six years ago but still hehe loooong time ago it seems.
Note: I honestly believe twelve year olds should not be watching movies like Saw and Hostel tsk tsk

Molly's dad is engaged to Phyllis. Molly refers to Phyllis as "the claw" because of her nails. Molly's mom died when she was young, and after her mother's death she and her dad became the best of friends. They spent so much time together, but now Phyllis is ruining everything and Molly hates her.

One day, Molly and her best friend, Tanna, find a weird antique machine in the basement that belongs to "the claw." When they turn it on, they discover that the machine tells you who you are going to marry. After several tests, they decide that it indeed does tell the truth.

Molly is determined to change the outcome of the Who-Meter when it comes to her father. All Tanna wants to do is tell other people and charge them money to find out who they will end up marrying. But when an interesting thing happens, Molly and Tanna might start thinking differently about the machine.

This book was really cute and also funny. Phyllis - "the claw" - seemed like such an awful person that it made sense that Molly wanted to find her dad somebody else to be with! There were a few parts of the book that were unexpected to me, which was a nice surprise. The ending was pretty good, as well.

I'd recommend this book to younger readers around age 12 or so. It seems like a book they might enjoy a lot.

this book is so stupid!!!!It stereotypes girls my age to be complete idiots!And of course it has to talk about popularity!Which,in my school or any other of anyone I've met,DOES NOT EVEN EXIST things like that show up in movies and books all the time!Who wants to hear about the main character in a story getting bullied and wishing she was this or that!And nothing gets done about it in this book!it is the most frusterating book i have ever read!unless you like put downs and a bitter taste in your mouth after you finish reading,then do not waste your cash on this junk.

Big Chickens by Leslie Helakoski is a very funny book that should be read with LOTS of expression. When I select several books to read to my grandkids, they always want this one read first. Maybe it's because they know how much gramma enjoys reading it with great gusto! This is not a book for quiet story time, this book is just so funny everyone will be laughing.

The illustrations by Henry Cole are simply perfect. We laugh over and over every time we see those silly chickens in their cute outfits pwocking, flocking and rocking.

The storyline is simple, the chickens see a wolf sneak into the farmyard and they run away and have quite an adventure. At one point in the story the chickens come to a lake and this is how the conversation goes:

"I'm afraid of the water," said one chicken.
"Ohh...." said the others.
"Me too."
"Me three."
"Me four."
"What if the boat sinks?"
"What if we fall in the lake?"
"What if we hit an iceberg?"
The chickens sputtered, shuddered and muttered. They fluttered into themselves and each other; until...
the boat tipped, and one by one they fell out.

The biggest chickens around

The big Chickens are afraid of everything. And whenever they voice their fears, it seems that is exactly what happens to them. These big chickens go on an adventure outside the farmyard fueled by fear of the predator that might get them in the henhouse. Its a cause and effect sort of story, the chickens see the peril in front of them and say I don't want to do that because this, this, and this could happen. And when they go forward, that, that and that happens.

We laughed at the pictures, which were very clever in portraying the plight of the chickens.

At the end the biggest chickens around are so proud of their chicken-ness. It is a funny read.

Grade 3–6—Brief profiles of 20 individuals from Haym Solomon to Daniel Pearl. Famous and lesser-known figures are included, such as Albert Einstein and Rachel Frank, who preached sermons nearly a century before women were accepted as rabbis. While they varied widely in their adherence to Jewish practice, these individuals were (or are) committed to social justice. Accompanying portraits were done in a variety of styles and media in the spirit of the biographees' accomplishments. For instance, the portrait of Levi Strauss, who invented blue jeans, is painted on denim. The one of Emma Lazarus incorporates words from "The New Colossus." The approach is creative and expressive, although potentially confusing for literal-minded young readers. The text is clearly written, but the brevity of each profile necessarily means that details are glossed over and that minimal social or historical context is provided. While the life stories are a little dry, Drucker's admiration for each person comes through loud and clear, and may drive readers to seek out fuller biographies. This is a welcome book that fills an important void. At a time when Jewish heroes are largely absent from American history classes, Malka Drucker has done us a wonderful service. As she explains to the readers, "The people in this book tell the story of what it means to be both a Jew and an American." Her selection of heroes spans time, age and gender to provide stories of individuals who made a positive contribution to American history. From Haym Salomon at the birth of America to Daniel Pearl whose life was recently taken by terrorists, the book allows readers to transcend time and connect with people who made a difference. The book should accompany every child's American history text to fill the missing details of Jewish involvement. The creative design and, in particular, the striking and colorful illustrations by Elizabeth Rosen make this book especially attractive. Each of her distinctive portraits varies in media to match the individual she is portraying. The results are visually striking. A useful glossary, timeline and suggested reading list are provided. This book turned out to be not what we expected. It's very political and some of the people mentioned in the book never really identified themselves with Judaism. ALthough they may have made contributions to US, it is a far stretch to call some of them Jewish Heroes.

Grade 3-5-- Buster, a curious amalgam of naivete, disarming sweetness, and arrested development, has the ability to spot phoniness in classmates as well as in adults. On the other hand, his response to disappointment is to carry on as if nothing has occurred--e.g., he loses his part-time job, but accepts his firing unperturbed. When he is not chosen to star in the school play, he carries on as scene changer, as if he were playing the lead and in a costume of his own chosing. Indeed, through a curious turn of events, Buster steps in to the final act unrehearsed. Quick to perceive vanity and superficiality in others, he has the ability to make good friends, old and young, girls and boys alike. However, the fact that he rides on a broomstick horse is offputting and childish; he has a wild and original imagination, but his resulting behavior is often disconcertingly ingenuous. Also, his mischievous tricks are not convincing enough to be funny. Buster's World (Dutton, 1989) was given the Batchelder award, but this episode is not a winner. --Phyllis G. A second bittersweet story about the hero of Buster's World (1990 Batcheldor Award)--with the vulnerable but resilient Danish boy now yearning to play the lead in a school play. Telling scenes reveal that Buster's life isn't easy: he must fetch his father home from a bar; he shares a bed with his sister; he's treated callously by teachers, the play's director, and a school custodian--only one of the blindly angry people he contends with. Creative and sensitive as well as exasperating, Buster counters with mischief--not all of it innocent: he tricks the privileged boy chosen to play the sheikh into letting him paint his face green--but he's also the sympathetic confidant of a neighbor, a recent widower, and, for all its faults, his family is a loving one. Like his character, his age is a surreal blend of playfulness and adult experience--though he does decimals in math, Buster's constant companion is ``Charlie Mane,'' a broomstick horse. In the book's most poignant moment, just after a teacher has called him a ``zero...[a] nothing,'' Buster's told by the custodian that Charlie Mane has been burned: he was infested with lice. The weeping Buster still has courage and a sense of his own value: running free, he shouts, ``I'm Buster...I'm not nothing.'' A moving story that captures childhood's essence in a rare blend of unblinking realistic detail, pathos, and rollicking, roguish humor. I am a long time fan of Classic Pooh, and my husband bought this for our son and myself to read together.
We have probably read it 500 times since March! My son loves the pictures, and love to point out Pooh and Piglet, and all the other characters to grace this beautiful book.
Also, the words are BIG,, a good first choice for when he is ready to learn to read on his own. Until then I will read it ten times a day! It's just as sweet as Piglet himself!

Actress and Weight Watchers spokesperson Redgrave describes this book as an opportunity to "leap back down the lanes of my memory, events falling patternless like autumn leaves." She's not far off-- This Is Living is an often irritating and ultimately bewildering jumble of recollections, anecdotes, inspirational wisdom, plugs for Weight Watchers and 100 recipes. We learn of her struggles with weight (she calls it the Fat Ogre), her coming of age as an actress and coming to terms with her bisexual father Sir Michael, her role as a Weight Watchers advocate and how to make a low-fat version of "bubble and squeak." The book has occasional glints of the sunny charm and humor that have endeared Redgrave to audiences on Broadway, movies and TV: Sir Laurence Olivier told her she had a limited future on the stage because she was "our flopsy bunny actress"; her elation at learning that winning the role of the lumpy "Georgy Girl" enabled her to eat as much as she pleased. But Redgrave obviously wanted to accomplish much, much more--to the chagrin of the reader. Reflecting this ambition, the book's tone shifts wildly (chapters are interspersed with long, italicized "memory" passages) and the resulting hodgepodge is thin indeed.
