In this high-spirited original folktale set in yesteryear Beijing, a magical pan becomes a Robin Hood hero. On Chinese New Year’s Eve, the poor Zhangs send their son, Ming, to trade their last eggs for rice, which, unlike the rich, greedy Li family, they plan to share with their neighbors. Along the way, Ming encounters an old man, who offers Ming a wok that miraculously pleads its own case: “Trade for me, / I am more than what you see!” Astonished, Ming carries it home, where it continues to sing: “Skippity-hoppity-ho! / To the rich man’s wife I go!” Off it bounces, and in several trips to the Lis and back, the wily wok collects food, toys, and money, which Ming and his parents joyfully distribute throughout their community. The well-paced, repetitive text reads aloud well, but young listeners will want to crowd in close to enjoy the details of holiday bustle in the appealingly packed acrylic paintings. Ying Chang Compestine grew up in China. She is the author of cookbooks for adults and children’s books that introduce Chinese culture and food, including The Real Story of Stone Soup. She lives with her family in California.

Don't share the wealth--take it all

Ming's family is poor, even though Poppa works for the richest man in Beijing. When Ming's mother sends him to trade for food, he comes home with a battered old magic wok. Soon after Mama washes the wok, it rolls down the street to the rich man's kitchen, where it loads up on every bit of food they have, and skips back to Ming's house. Ming's family unloads all the food, and the wok rolls away again, back to the rich man's house. This time it loads up all the toys. In the wok's third trip, it takes every one of the rich man's gold coins.
An everyday container that magically fills is a common folktale theme. But all the other tales of that type I've read use magic to create the vessel's contents, not theft. This story, although clever, is based on the concept that the forced removal of someone's wealth is a good thing.
This picture book is illustrated with bright, cheerful colors and lively action.

Run Far Away from this Book

I do not know the political affiliations of Ying Chang Compeshine; however, the philosophy of economic distribution through class warfare is the dominating thesis of this so-called children's book. After reading it once to my children, it will never be read in this house again. I want my children to understand the value of hard work to get whatever they may have and not to rely upon someone else to redistribute economic worth to them.
The story is about the poor Zhang family that laments their situation in that they cannot have a great celebration for the Chinese New Year. Their son ends up trading eggs for this magic wok which spends the rest of the story hopping down the road to the rich Li family home. The Zhangs mindlessly obey this wok, without thinking, because they are promised a bounty of food. The wok steals food, toys, and money from the Lis but immediately returns to the poor family to allow them to enjoy the bounty of the rich. The end is rather shocking in that all of the Li family is swept away by the wok so that they were "never seen again in Beijing."
Lest you think I am over-reacting to a simply child's book, let me dig a little deeper for you. At no point in the story does the Zhang family teach their son that taking from others is not right but they rejoice and enjoy their benefit at the expense of others. The Li family (the rich ones) are described as selfish, chubby, greedy, cheaters, spoiled, out-of-shape, and inept. The Zhang family is hardworking, compliant, and serving to others. Without this wok, they would not have had a celebration, food, possessions, money, or the idea to start their own business. Since the book was written in 2011, with all the political discourse raging at that time, the implications are easy to discern.
This book is NOT the simple adaptation of the Robin Hood theme of take from the rich to give to the poor. The major difference between these two stories is simple -- Robin Hood's antagonist was an evil, self-serving, and corrupt government that wronged the people willingly and often. That story unveils those details very clearly and how King Richard's return changed everything. In this so-called children's book, the antagonist is a rich family that may have earned their wealth properly but the author omitted any such details. This story ends happily only when the rich are no more, and that is a scary proposition.
My advice is simple -- run far, far away from The Runaway Wok.

Terrible moral

While the drawings are adorable and the book is an easy read, the moral of this story is terrible. It basically sends the message that it is ok to steal from people if they have more than you have. It also conveniently eradicates the rich family in the town. Not anything I would want to teach my 4 year old.
