From Publishers Weekly
In this dual biography of two women who played significant roles in the country's historyMary Todd Lincoln, wife of the President of the United States and Varina Howell Davis, wife of the President of the Confederate States of Americathere is little outward commonality in their lives save for the fact that "for four years, and for the only time in American history, two women had simultaneously occupied, albeit in rival governments, the position of first lady." In this insightful study, Van der Heuvel, press secretary to first lady Pat Nixon, does much to rehabilitate the reputation of maligned Mary Todd Lincoln, who is pictured as pathetic and misunderstood, yet singleminded in her devotion to her husband. More attractive is the Confederate wife who, at age 34, became the first lady of the South and a major figure of the Civil War period. Well-educated, outspoken, an engaging foil for her older husband's reticence, Varina Davis left her mark on the social life of the Confederacy. The two women, who never met, bore family tragedies and the brunt of hostile publicity as the fortunes of their husbands turned.
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
This extremely readable dual biography is as gripping as any novel. Recounting the parallel lives of the only two women in American history to have served concurrently as "First Lady," it details how both reacted, from a feminine viewpoint, to the strains of their husbands' politics during the war. It also shows how both were the victims of political hostilities, bitter criticisms, and malicious gossip from an aggressive press. General readers will find timely press criticisms of Mary's "extravagance" and reports of her resort to seances and spiritualists in hopes of overcoming her young son's death. In Varina's words, the book demonstrates the "bitterness of being a politician's wife." Marie Marmo Mullaney, Caldwell Coll., N.J.

crowns of thorns and glory
By A Customer
This is one of the best books on the Civil War era in that it not only tells a part of the story from each "side," it tells it from a woman's point of view. The two first ladies of the time were in some ways very much alike and in other ways very different. I came to care about each of them, but must admit that I felt very close to Varina Davis because she was so REAL. I get the impression that she could make a person feel comfortable, that she did not use her status for personal gain or "look down her nose" at anyone. I will not forget when she walked in the mud carrying a child so that her nurse, who was ill, could ride in the wagon. Varina blossomed from a shy, young and beautiful (second) wife of a very influential man to an outgoing, personable, gracious first lady who remained "human" all the way. She suffered greatly both in her personal life and with her country. I have borrowed this book twice since it has gone out of print. Now I have Amazon tracking it down for me. It's a great read!

The lost history of a forgotten First Lady
By William F.Smith, III
This book, about the wife of Jefferson Davis-the President of an independent South, is an overlooked masterpiece of an overlooked heroine of the South. It is not the story of Magnolia and moonlight..but is the story of of the wife of a beleagured first lady to the President of a beleaguered and invaded nation at total war in the forlorn fight for independence. There are many commarisons to the spendthrift and mentally ill wife of The Invader, Abe Lincoln And Varina is by far the better woman. Varina's life is that of a true woman of strengh and courage both during the time of war and of defeat. This book deserves to be read by all those who claim feminism as their credo and they will learn what a woman of courage can do an be in a time that most living Americans cannot comprehend.

The First Lady Nobody Knows
By Parke Brown
I stumbled across this book when I read the author's obituary in the Washington Post. It is out of print but I was lucky enough to get a used copy. I was fascinated by the parallels presented between the two First Ladies of the War Between the States. (Including that they both tragically lost young sons while their husbands were in office.) I already knew a good bit about Mrs. Lincoln but absolutely nothing about Mrs. Davis. She was a remarkable woman. The book is thoroughly researched and put to bed some of the myths about Mrs. Lincoln. It is a good read.

A little girl and her pet French bulldog are the perfect playmates in this all-day outdoors adventure!

When his family sets out to explore the neighborhood, one puppy is eager to join in the fun! He gets to do everything his sister does—with his own added flair, of course. Together they eat (pancakes for her, kibble for him), bathe (tub for her, sink for him), and play (chasing squirrels for both). Side by side, they enjoy the same things, each in their own way. And when the long day comes to an end, both settle down for a restful sleep—that is, until tomorrow comes. Because when every day’s a dog’s day, every day is the best day . . . especially when you can spend it with the person you love.

PreS-Gr 1—A dog describes a typical day in this brightly illustrated tale. Pup is clearly a member of the family and so refers to his humans as "Mom," "Dad," and "Sis." Most of the spreads depict what Sis is doing on the left and what Pup does on the right with hilarious results. For example, when the text reads, "Time for a Potty Break," the illustrations reflect Mom helping Sis inside a coffee shop while Dad helps Pup find a nice tree. The vivid acrylic illustrations and hand-lettering elevate this picture book to more than a general purchase. VERDICT Perfect for all libraries with dog-loving patrons.—Brooke Newberry, La Crosse Public Library, WI

The how of Pooh? The Tao of who? The Tao of Pooh!?! In which it is revealed that one of the world's great Taoist masters isn't Chinese--or a venerable philosopher--but is in fact none other that that effortlessly calm, still, reflective bear. A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh!While Eeyore frets, and Piglet hesitates, and Rabbit calculates, and Owl pontificates, Pooh just is.

And that's a clue to the secret wisdom of the Taoists.

Amazon.com Review
Is there such thing as a Western Taoist? Benjamin Hoff says there is, and this Taoist's favorite food is honey. Through brilliant and witty dialogue with the beloved Pooh-bear and his companions, the author of this smash bestseller explains with ease and aplomb that rather than being a distant and mysterious concept, Taoism is as near and practical to us as our morning breakfast bowl. Romp through the enchanting world of Winnie-the-Pooh while soaking up invaluable lessons on simplicity and natural living.

From Library Journal
Author/narrator Hoff calls Winnie the Pooh a "Western Taoist" and uses the unassuming bear to introduce Eastern philosophical principles. Pooh epitomizes the "uncarved block," as he is well in tune with his natural inner self. Pooh enjoys simple pleasures and the daily progress of life. Hoff contrasts this unpretentiousness to other characters created by Winnie - the - Pooh author A.A. Milne, including Owl, whom he describes as a "mind that tries too hard," and Eeyore, the eternal pessimist. In a clear and crisp voice, Hoff explains the central tenets of Taoism and further illustrates them with familiar excerpts from The House at Pooh Corner stories (1923), Chinese proverbs, maxims, and tales from Lao Tzu and others. The result is at once thought-provoking and charming. This is a small literary event that will leave all who experience it a little more serene. For most collections.

"Vance demonstrates his great range, shifting easily from didactic sections of the book to fictional narrative and imbuing Milne's characters with distinct voices. . . . This audio edition, due in large part to Vance's performance, is surprisingly engaging and accessible." ---Publishers Weekly Starred Audio Review

Not only did I love the book
By Ali S.
I was introduced to this book as required reading for my yoga training certification. Not only did I love the book, but have bought several as gifts since reading it. It was a very easy to read, light-hearted and humorous, yet also contained deep philosophical ideas. The writing style is unique and entertaining and it is the perfect blend of entertaining and thought provoking content. As someone new to the ideas of Taoism, this book helps illustrate the major tenants in plain "layman's terms" even I could understand. Would be a great book for the vacation reader as well as the scholar. I think this book is suitable for readers of all ages, there is something to be gained for nearly every audience. I do not practice Taoism, however, the lessons in this book are applicable to nearly everyone living in our busy modern world. Definitely a great addition to your permanent library, I highly recommend.

Fran Lebowitz: A relic from the 1970s returns!
By pisces
I'm probably being a bit too too too generous giving "Metropolitan Life" 4 stars. I'm doing it more for the lovability of Frannie Lebowitz, than necessarily her laugh-out-loud funniness. And yet, I remember Fran's endless appearances on talk shows in the 1970s-early 1980s, looking very errudite and Andy Warhol-ish, with sophisticated cigarette in hand, as she spouted off her pontifications and rumination of life. We all thought she was the height of eccentric sophistication and witty urbane intelligence back then in 1980.

Does it translate as well in 2006?

Fran Lebowitz is still clever enough. It's a slice of life that we'll never see again: that Andy Warhol-Halston-Studio 54 crowd that mixed with New York City's power elite: Fran was able to bridge those two worlds. I guess I'm feeling nostalgic for that period of time, when everybody rubbed shoulders with everyone else, and people weren't so isolated and cloistered in their own little groups reaffirming their own little world view.

Fran Lebowitz represented, back then, a kind of being able to expand your comfort zone. You didn't have to live in New York City to "get" her. You didn't have to be an edgy urbane sophisticate to appreciate the cleverness of her witticism.

You still don't. Here's what Fran has to say about....sleep:

"Sleep is death without the responsibility."

Fran on ...poetry:

"Generally speaking, it is inhumane to detain a fleeting insight."

Fran on convenience foods:

"The servant problem being what it is, one would think it apparent that a society that provides a Helper for tuna but compels a writer to pack her own suitcases desperately needs to reorder its priorities".

Fran on the self-help movement:

"If you want to get ahead in this world, get a lawyer--not a book.

There are all sorts of these Fran-isms in "Metropolitan Life".

Fran wakes up at 12:35 pm to start her day:

"---The phone rings. I am not amused. This is not my favorite way to wake up. My favorite way to wake up is to have a certain French movie star whisper to me softly at two-thirty in the afternoon that if I want to get to Sweden in time to pick up my Nobel Prize for Literature I had better ring for breakfast. This occurs rather less often than one might wish."--Fran Lebowitz, Metropolitan Life

In 1978, when Metropolitan Life was published, New York City was all the rage, and we thought these urbane witticisms were the funniest thing ever.

I still think she's very clever and represents a certain urban social strata that's, today, lost forever. The Studio 54 crowd of the late 1970s, that Andy Warhol/Fran Lebowitz came out of, were some of the most dynamic, artistic, edgy, intellectuals ever. Obviously today's club kids, and what passes for today's urban "Hip Hop" youth are completely different. Today, it's an anti-intellectualism that pervades urban club culture.

So, in that sense......Fran Lebowitz's world looks very appealing, today, when you contrast it with what passes for empty, dumbed-down humor in contemporary 2006.

No, of course "Metropolitan Life" isn't laugh-out-loud hysterical/hilarious by today's standards of jaded humor. But it does represent a universal-clever urban sophistication that we are missing from society today. We have become very polarized and, today, you'd never see a Fran Lebowitz, or Andy Warhol, mixing with New York establishment types, or appealing to the general masses the way she/they did back then. You also have to remember that this was ten years before Seinfeld, and she paved the way for that kind of Seinfeld-ian dry-humor and comedic observations.

In that sense the humor book, Metropolitan Life, if short on belly-laughs, does indeed work as a historical/culture chronicle. And Fran is far more clever than anything that passes for generic/homogenized humor today.

Rounded Down From One Hundred Stars; Now, With An Index!
By Donald P. Reed
Metropolitan Life, Fran Lebowitz; A Harold Robbins Book [E.P. Dutton] (1974-78 hardcover)

This slender goldmine of fierce but subtle satire hasn't aged a bit since the day when I originally didn't read it & the recommendation that you do the opposite (read it) is unqualified.

"Unqualified" also describes Met Life's publisher E.P. Dutton (deceased, 1986), whose irked editorial representative (a summer intern) listened to the bid made by a freelancer (Fran, wanting even more money, impersonating someone else) for the assembly of the book's index --- & then rudely hung up.

My contribution to the world of Arts & Letters (winner of the Belmont Stakes in 1969) in the context of praising this book (note the Five Stars, above left) is...

The creation of the index that was never written.

I LOVE this book! LOL!
By Puck
Fran Lebowitz's work should NOT be OUT OF PRINT! Her work should be taught in schools. Do people still study the writing of essays? Do they still want to learn the cadence of wit? I laughed out loud while re-reading Metropolitan Life - one of Fran's "sports" is "getting the mail." Okay, part of that is affection for Fran, can't help it. I have to love someone who is still real. I love her work. I was inspired to re-purchase her books after seeing Martin Scorsese's Public Speaking documentary of Fran. I was astonished to see them out of print. The strange irony of this fact is that we get to see her speak more often and in more locations than she would ever lecture or read if she were raking it in from her books. It was obvious to me, while listening to her in the film, that she is still writing whether she knows it or not; she is such a natural.

Hard Red Spring, by Kelly Kerney

An ambitious and unforgettable epic novel that spans a hundred years of Guatemala’s tumultuous history as experienced by four American women who are linked by the mysterious disappearance of a little girl

In 1902, a young girl watches her family’s life destroyed by corrupt officials and inscrutable natives. In 1954, the wife of the American ambassador becomes trapped in the intrigue of a cold war love affair. In 1983, an evangelical missionary discovers that the Good News may not be good news at all to the Mayan refugees she hopes to save. And in 1999, the mother of an adopted Mayan daughter embarks on a Roots Tour only to find that the history she seeks is not safely in the past.

Kelly Kerney’s novel tells a powerful story that draws on the history of Guatemala and the legacy of American intervention to vividly evoke The Land of Eternal Spring in all its promise and all its devastating failures. This is a place where a volcano erupts and the government sends a band to drown out the sound of destruction; where a government decree reverses the direction of one-way streets; a president decides that Pat Robertson and Jesus will save the country; and where a UN commission is needed to determine the truth. A heartrending and masterfully written look at a country in perpetual turmoil, Hard Red Spring brilliantly reveals how the brutal realities of history play out in the lives of individuals and reveals Guatemala in a manner reminiscent of the groundbreaking memoir I, Rigoberta Menchu.

From Publishers Weekly
Kerney (Born Again) explores Guatemala-U.S. relations over the entire 20th century as told by four different Americans living in the tumultuous Central American country. In separate sections ordered chronologically, the four female characters tell divergent but similar stories that come together abruptly by the novel's end. In 1902, eight-year-old Evie Crowder, the daughter of an American cochineal farmer, lives a cloistered life on a barren farm in Guatemala. Due to the draft policy surrounding indigenous Guatemalan men, her father is struggling to find the labor necessary to save their farm, and he makes a deal that will change Evie's life forever. In 1954, the wife of the American ambassador, Dorie, is planning a future with her lover, Tomás, far away from the communists who are taking over Guatemala. In 1983, Lenore and her husband, missionaries in Guatemala, believe they are helping the Christian president through their efforts to convert and baptize Mayans. In the final section, set in 1999, Jean takes her adopted Guatemalan daughter, Maya, on a tour of her birth country in hopes of mending their relationship and is flooded with memories of her time in the war-torn country. The mystery of Evie's life and the scars of Guatamala's past interactions with the U.S. tie the four threads together. Kerney's fine research, wealth of exact details, and control of the historical timeline will keep readers turning pages. (Mar.)\n

Review
Praise for Hard Red Spring

“This century-spanning novel examines the violent relationship between Guatemala and the United States through the connected stories of four American women. . . . Ambitious . . . Kerney’s insights are rewarding.” —The New Yorker

“Kerney's fine research, wealth of exact details, and control of the historical timeline will keep readers turning pages.” —Publishers Weekly

“Hard Red Spring is an ambitious project. . . . Kerney’s real daring, however, lies in her novel’s emotional aim. She has crafted a story and a set of characters that require her readers to look squarely at what Americans — especially white Americans, the demographic most comfortable in the United States’ myth of moral superiority — will do to maintain our innocence, and what we will do, and have done, in the face of guilt. . . . Hard Red Spring gathers momentum as it progresses. . . . as the story moves into more recent decades, its prose grows robust with sharply-imagined detail. The weave of the plot tightens, and building suspense makes for a gripping read. Kerney is at her best in her wry observations of her characters.” —The Millions

“A multigenerational, multi-viewpoint tale that’s a meditation on everything from history to cultural context to personal strife, Kelly Kerney’s second novel is an adept meditation on the weight of history. . . . Interweaving stories of love, loss and confusion with beautiful prose and pacing, Hard Red Spring will pull readers through page after page.” —BookPage

“[Kerney] sensitively and skillfully interweaves...disparate stories into one in which the women, both Mayan and American, continue to matter; where the men—husbands, dictators and soldiers on both sides of the various conflicts—are portrayed in unflinching terms; and where hope is a virtually nonexistent commodity.” —Library Journal

“[A] powerful account of a century of Guatemala’s turbulent history.” —MarthaStewart.com

“Kelly Kerney's Hard Red Spring is that rare thing: a generations-spanning thriller with a political conscience. And Kerney is herself a rare thing: a novelist who has a terrific sense of humor and craft, but who also has a sense of what has gone wrong in this world, and whether any of us will ever be able to put it right again. A remarkable book.” —Brock Clarke, author of The Happiest People in the World

“In Hard Red Spring, Kelly Kerney brings a sharp satirical sensibility balanced with compassion that gives real insight into a generational tale of Guatemala and the way historical and human forces can combine with unexpected cruelties to test all that is human about us. It is a credit to the story and the writing that we emerge hopeful and triumphant.” —Chris Abani, author of The Secret History of Las Vegas and The Virgin of Flames

“Hard Red Spring is an ambitious exploration of the perverse and eternally tragic relationship between the United States and Guatemala. Kelly Kerney is a powerful storyteller, and the challenging border crossings she undertakes as a writer result in many moving perceptions and insights.” —Francisco Goldman, author of Say Her Name

Praise for Born Again

"Charmingly real and sympathetic." —Entertainment Weekly

"Entertaining . . . Throughout, Kerney successfully reveals the manifold contradictions and inconsistencies inherent in adult life." —The San Francisco Chronicle

"Like yin and yang, zealotry and doubt animate this intriguing debut. Mel is a terrific character: curious, smart, and funny." —Publishers Weekly

"Born Again is a harrowing and frequently hilarious insider's examination of Christian fundamentalism. It's enough to make an atheist pray—that this is not America’s future." —Richard Russo

"Charming and insightful." —Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

"The tale of a young Pentecostal’s test of faith, Kerney’s debut novel has guts and strength, even as it pivots on its narrator’s uncertainty. . . . Though it would be easy to clobber readers with such an obvious message, Kerney executes it subtly and skillfully." —The New York Times

About the Author
Kelly Kerney’s first novel, Born Again, was listed among the best debuts of the year by Kirkus Reviews, was a Book Sense Pick, and was recognized by the New York Public Library as one of the best books of 2006.  A Virginia Commission for the Arts fellowship recipient, she lives in Richmond, Virginia.

Monumental
By Jessica O'Dwyer
Kelly Kerney’s novel Hard Red Spring tells the history of modern Guatemala through the lives of four Americans whose stories are linked by the book’s inciting incident: the mysterious disappearance of an ex-pat little girl.

The book is divided into four time periods critical to Guatemala’s evolution: 1902, 1954, 1983, and 1999. During each of the four periods, a story is told through a different point of view: Evie, the young ex-pat girl who disappears; Dorie, the wife of the American ambassador to Guatemala during the presidency of Jacobo Arbenz and reign of United Fruit; Lenore, the wife of an evangelical pastor sent to Guatemala to serve in a model village under Efrain Rios Montt; and Jean, the adoptive mother who returns to Guatemala for a Roots Tour with her teenage daughter, Maya.

Each of these characters is an outsider in Guatemala, and much of the book’s drama revolves around the characters’ struggles to understand and navigate their outsider status. No clear villains or heroes emerge: Everyone is flawed, and in many ways, everyone is guilty—of selfishness, of pride, of good intentions gone awry–or if not guilty, not innocent, either.

I turned every page of Hard Red Spring in awe of Kelly Kerney’s ability to seamlessly weave the history of Guatemala through the epic narrative. The plot of each of the four sections is gripping and unexpected—perhaps because the history of Guatemala is both those things–and the characters are layered and memorable. At the same time, Hard Red Spring was, for me, a difficult read. Not because of the novel’s density—although at times it was dense—but because of the underlying message: That as a citizen of the United States, I am forever an interloper to Guatemala, regardless of how fervently I wish to belong.

Despite my discomfort, I recommend Hard Red Spring. It’s a monumental and important novel, one I won’t soon forget.

A Look At Rigid Fundamental Christianity and Guatemalan History
By LAURI CRUMLEY COATES
This is a stunning read. Taking aim at fundamentalism, it looks at several women, who lived in the period of the early 19th century to the start of the 20th century. These women's lives were affected by rigid and fundamental Christianity (not always their own belief system) in Guatemala. Well written and at times humorous, if you are easily offended you may want to skip this. For the rest of us, it's a magnificent look at both Guatemalan history and what any rigid fundamental belief can do. Well Done Indeed.

Worth reading for both fundamentalists and non-believers
By Neal Reynolds
If you're a fundamentalist believer and have a thick skin, you might like this. I'm one myself and conversely, I enjoyed reading these satirical jabs at my belief system. The book is basically a look at Guatemala during the 20th century with four viewpoints from each of the following years: 1902, 1954, 1983 and 1999. Yes, it's an attack on my belief system, but the skill of writing and the satirical attitude makes it worth my time and maybe yours. Rather tentatively recommended.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4–McCartney joins the ranks of celebrity authors with his first childrens book. Wirral the squirrel sets off to find Animalia, a tropical animal sanctuary. He knows of it from his mother, who is crushed to death when bulldozers begin mowing down the Woodland. With her dying breath, she urges him to find the fabled island. His quest takes him to Megatropolis, a loud, polluted city, where he sees animals imprisoned in factories and learns of a plot to destroy Animalia. With the help of his friends Froggo and Wilhamina, Wirral finds the island and leads the animals of the Woodland and Megatropolis to a happy, if predictable, end. Ardaghs writing style and humor are evident, although some of the jokes fall flat. The cartoon illustrations resemble animation cels reduced to fit the books pages, with the result that occasionally Wirral and his friends become lost in the surrounding scenery. Due to its length and vocabulary, the book will appeal to children who are ready for long read-alouds or beginning chapter books.–Suzanne Myers Harold, Multnomah County Library System, Portland, OR

Delightful.
By Gertrude
It's not going to be made into a movie anytime soon...nor do I think it will spurn a "tele" series. But I do hope Sir Paul keeps writing both songs and books.

My seven year old daughter and I purchased the book yesterday. We read it last night.

I worried since it is a picture book it might be too young for her...

Sorry Paul, I underestimated your power. She was enthralled.

The book is a great adventure...within a few pages we were drawn into it... almost immediately after meeting Wirral, the main character... he is thrust into the adult world by the sudden loss of a loved one. Wirral trying to fulfill the last wishes of his dead loved one begins a journey to find the magical world Animalia that he has been told exists only in fairy tales until his loved one tells him on her deathbed... Animalia is real!

Around the world he goes...squirrel on the run, meeting friends and discovering the world... running up trees and saving girls...protecting the planet...one small squirrel step at a time.

The drawings are wonderful and sweet.

It is Paul McCartney after all.

What else would one expect from one who constantly may be amazes me!

Review
The quintessential petrifying pop-up book, first published 25 years ago, has been re-released. The spooky old house is full of spine-tingling surprises. Evening Standard

About the Author
Jan Pienkowski was born in Warsaw in 1936. His family were architects and artists. He made his first book when he was 8, as a present for his father. It was all about road rage - but featuring a horse and cart. The war made his childhood an adventure, if not a very comfortable one at times, taking him from Poland to Austria, Germany, Italy and finally bringing him in 1946 to England. After reading Classics and English at Cambridge, Jan worked in advertising, publishing, and doing graphics for the BBC children's TV series Watch! In his spare time, he started to illustrate books for children. The books took over. Jan won the Library Association Kate Greenaway Medal in 1972 for his silhouette illustrations to Joan Aiken's The Kingdom Under the Sea and again in 1980 for Haunted House. He was to use his silhouette technique to dramatic effect in other books like the Fairytale Library. Jan pioneered the modern pop-up book with Haunted House, Robot, Dinner Time, Good Night and 17 others. Christmas Kingdom, Phone Book and Door Bell added sound effects while Botticelli's Bed and Breakfast capers irreverently through the history of western art.

This haunted house is a SCREAM!
By TheXRAYest
I bought this fun book after I read the favorable reviews here, and I am a halloween nut. My kids and I love this book! The pop-ups are awesome and the quality of the book is excellent. What I am not quite sure of is the dialoge/storyline that goes with it. I have looked at and read this book numerous times and still have no clue who the "doctor" is...is it Dr.Frankenstein? Dr. Doolittle perhaps? I am left anxious with no idea who the mysterious doctor is and in the last page, just where did he go? I am thinking he is in the wooden box heading for Translyvania and trying in vain to saw himself out - yet when I peek into the box, I see no doctor, just a bomb with a lit fuse! Cool pop-ups but pretty bizarre story to go along with it.

Excellent--definitely worth the price!
By Dr. Christopher Coleman
Jan Pienkowski's Haunted House is a terrific book, with lots of great colorful detailed illustrations and a variety of popups, pullouts, dial turns, etc. Except for the last, each of the five double pages has at least three "activities", and some have more. Many of the pictures are funny, with things like a black cat in the toilet--the bathroom scene is one of my two favorites, in fact, with a fantastically silly buglike alien with peppermint lips bursting through the wall and an alligator in the tub. Although nothing is particularly frightening for most, parents will want to exercise a bit of judgement if their children are very sensitive--there's no blood, but there is a skeleton in the closet and a ghost hovering over a bed. If my child were prone to fears I would definitely skip this one. But most kids will love it, and, like Sesame Street, adults will find a few details put in only for them--the bookshelf, for example, has books labelled "Poe", "Bosch" and "Von Dani" with the remaining letters of that last name off the page--recognise it? (Hint: There's a spaceship on the same page!)
We were given this book for my son probably 16 years ago. My daughter also enjoyed it as a child and in fact was just studying the pop-up techniques for her high school design technology class. Our original copy has held up well after all the years and all the loving, which speaks volumes for its construction--kudos to "paper engineer Tor Lokvig"! Pages are thick card stock and only a few of the popup effects have suffered any of the ravages of time in our copy; but I still would recommend getting a new copy rather than buying one used, especially sight unseen. And at the price, even a new one is definitely a bargain!

From Publishers Weekly
Cofounder and chairman of Sony Corporation, Morita, who personifies Japan's postwar technological ascendancy, ascribes his interest in electronics to his mother's love of Victrola recordings of European music. With the help of Time magazine's Tokyo bureau-chief Reingold and Japanese journalist Shimomura, he traces the development of his multinational firm, starting with a primitive tape recorder he built amid Tokyo's wartime rubble. Determined to change the image of Japanese goods to one of quality in foreign markets, especially in the U.S. where he established a subsidiary, he was gratified that Sony products were soon copied by global competitors. While retaining the mental discipline of his native education, Morita has adopted features of the Western world. He contrasts the Japanese familial, long-term concept of employee relations and other business practices with those of the U.S., which he criticizes for its litigious, hasty and often uncompromising attitudes. Liberalization of trade on both sides, he avers, would be a positive step in solving the worldwide economic crisis. From Library Journal
This volume provides a biography of the legendary co-founder and chairman of the Sony Corporation, Akio Morita. Beginning in the waning days of World War II and spanning to the present, Morita deftly comments on a variety of topics ranging from the post-war reconstruction of Japan to his views on world trade. Of special interest to managers will be Morita's chapter "On Management," which unlocks some of the issues he believes to account for Japanese economic success. Items of discussion here include the Japanese philosophies of lifetime employment, job rotation, long-run orientation, and quality control. This book seems destined to be the Japanese version of Iacocca. BOMC alternate; Fortune Book Club selection. Gene R. Laczniak, Coll. of Business Administration, Marquette Univ.

A business philosphy for life.
By G. Murray
The book is an interesting mix of history, philosophy, business managment, and worldly opinions.
It starts with a description of life in Japan and some of the ancient customs and culture. The events of World War II as seen from
the Japanese view point is interesting in itself. What follows then is the development of a world wide corporation with it's growth
troubles, managment style, international barriers and differnces and a sense of "can-do" wonder. The remainder of the book is the
foward looking views and opinions of an elder statesmen.
One item that I found myself personally attached to was the theme of "monttainai" on page 227 and throughout the rest of the
chapter. I'll leave it to you to figure out why.

Made in Japan
By Trevor Chilton
A very interesting book that dispells a great deal of myths about Japanese business management and although it is an older book now it is great to see how things have unfolded as per some of the authors predictions. Also a helpful read in getting a much better understanding of the whole war era of Japan and how that led to the creation of Sony. A most worthwhile read especially if employee relations interest you.
