"I love my mommy because she gives me great big hugs."

"I love my daddy because he takes naps with me."

These two beloved, best-selling concept books, richly illustrated by Ashley Wolff, are now available as board books for small hands.  The youngest nursery tots will appreciate how phrases and actions from their own experiences also apply to animal babies.  Each book begins with an affectionate scene between a human parent and child, but moves on to care giving in animal families.  "She listens when I talk" shows a mamma cat and her mewing kitten.  "She tucks me in features a kangaroo with her joey peeking out of her pouch.  "He sings me songs" shows a gray wolf and his cub.  In concept, text, and art, these are among the most warm and reassuring lap books ever.

From Publishers Weekly
Although the titles of these companion volumes threaten to engulf the reader in sentimental accounts of how parents endear themselves to children, they instead deliver sweetly appealing looks at how animals care for their young. The opening page of the first book reads, "I love my mommy because she reads me stories," and shows a boy and his mother curled up in an armchair. The motif throughout the second book, meanwhile, is "I love my daddy because he plays with me." Though the text that follows describes situations that children can identify with ("She feeds me when I'm hungry"; "He watches over me at night"), each illustration subsequently features either a domestic or wild animal with his or her young, clearly labeled and engaged in the specified action, and realistically depicted in native habitats. Unfortunately, the tendency here to emphasize Mommy as caretaker and Daddy as protector may reinforce sex-role stereotypes. Sturdy, coated pages and paper-over-board bindings make these reasonably priced books almost toddler-proof. Ages 18 mos.-4 yrs.

Great animal artwork and concepts for pre-schoolers.
By A Customer
The pictures of baby animals and their mothers, tied together with descriptions of things human mommies do for their babies, make this a favorite book for the pre-schooler in our home. The pages are heavyweight paper, which resists tearing when held by small hands. In addition to the standard preschool fare of kittens and pigs, the book also features beautiful artwork of more exotic animals, such as grey whales, sea lions, dolphins, otters, koalas, polar bears and more. I highly recommend the book for children as young as 2 years old.

Two Birds With One Stone

So, you may be looking for a gift for your kid, but you want to score points with your wife. Wham, buy this, give it to the kid and the wife has tears in her eyes. You score points all around and probably have enough capital to go golfing the next day. The book is actually well illustrated and has names of all the animals and has enough going on to point out all kinds of things. One of our new favorite bed time books.

Perfect for little ones
By Chickenlittle
My child absolutely loves this book! We took it out of the public library so many times I finally bought it. I have a really lovey child, so if your child loves hugs and kisses you may want to consider this book. My child also loves animals which are illustrated throughout the book. The story starts out with mom on a chair reading to her child and goes onto other animal mothers with their offspring, such as, mother cat with her kitten and the words, "She listens when I talk." Mother deer and fawn, with the words,"She keeps me nice and clean." "She tucks me in." is illustrated with mother kangaroo and Joey. It ends with a child in his mother's lap saying, "I love my mommy and my mommy loves me."
This is a great bedtime story because it is easy to read and short. My child loved this book so much that we also bought, I Love My Daddy Because....

The book is good. I've been following the stories for years

The book is good. I've been following the stories for years. I didn't learn too much of what I didn't already know. As other reviewers wrote, ed sanders isn't the best writer and has many run on sentences that you have to read several times over, but I have no complaints. It was an easy read and I couldn't put it down. He does use "oo-ee-oo" several times, which there was no need for, but he didn't excessively use it as I believed, from reviewers. Good book and a must have for people that are into obtaining knowledge about manson, the family and the murders.

Is it possible to present facts in an enteraining manner? Sanders style of writing is great and keeps your interest. If you want court testimony, legal documents, and legal jargon, read Helter Skelter or visit [...] If you want to read something about these horrific events in a way that isn't boring and over your head, read this. This is one of my favorites on this subject!

An acclaimed picture book, now an enchanting board book.

One little girl wakes up to a fairy-tale world. She spies two dancing feet from the Golden Goose tale, three hungry bears just meeting Goldilocks, and four royal mattresses between the princess and the pea. With many objects to count on each colorful page, 1 2 3 is perfect for children learning their numbers 1 though 10.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. In a sumptuous companion to her A B C, Jay takes readers on an enchanted journey from 1 to 10 and back again, with help from fairy tale figures. A quartet of self-satisfied frog princes impressively embody the number 4, while a plate of gingerbread men—including one poised for escape—represent the number 6. (Other counting opportunities abound in the backgrounds.) As in the previous book, Jay unspools a story-within-the-primer. One little girl, who has fallen asleep while reading, is transported to the magical landscape on the wings of the Goose That Laid the Golden Egg; this same bird serves as her chaperone as she visits the subsequent scenes as an amazed onlooker. At number 9, the goose is reunited with her precious-metal eggs, and the girl finds herself cast as Little Red Riding Hood and other heroines as the numbers reach 10 and head back to 1. Close attention will reveal other links; for example, the view of Jack's beanstalk (created from seven magic beans) also includes one of the eight rats who figure prominently in the following spread, inspired by the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The pictures are a wonder to behold: Jay's flattened perspectives, gently faded colors, crackle-glaze finishes and lean, angular characterizations vaguely evoke the dreamy, ambiguous narrative qualities of medieval art. And yet the pictures never feel like museum pieces—rather, they're like missives from a universe where it's Once Upon a Time 24/7. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3—In this beautiful companion volume to Jay's ABC (Dutton, 2003), a child ("one little girl sleeping") dreams that she travels on a large golden goose ("two soaring wings") to visit a variety of nursery rhymes and fairy tales. Each place she visits has things to count: "three little pigs," "four frog princes," etc. The text is simple, with only three or four words on each page. The real story is told through the paintings done in Jay's familiar crackle-glaze style of simple shapes, jeweled colors, and soft lines. In each picture, the artist includes delightful details that reward observant viewers. For example, the page that says, "Eight running rats" also includes eight shoes, eight cupcakes, and a tiny view of the beanstalk from the previous page. The girl and the goose can be found on every spread, which adds continuity to the story. Some pages have hints of things to come, like the six beans lying on the table next to the six gingerbread men, foreshadowing the "Jack and the Beanstalk" scene on the next page. This clever picture book will delight the very young as well as children already familiar with the fairy tales.—Donna Cardon, Provo City Library, UT

Count on more...
By Nell
For a basic counting book, this colorful presentation also introduces children's stories like Jack and the Beanstalk. The bright, artistic, but not overly busy pictures encourage sharing, counting and relating the pictures to one another - all necessary reading skills. After the counting is done, read the whole fairy tale...there is a list in the back of the book. My granddaughter loves the book and we can't wait to add the extended stories to our reading repertoire.

Enchanting!
By M. Spano
This is a beautiful, enchanting book. The illustrations are superb, the text simple and sweet leaving plenty of time to peruse the details of the pictures. There is a fairy tale theme subtly carried throughout. My 3.5 and 7 year old daughters both love this book.

One of our favorite books
By Mable
This book is fun for both kids and adults. As with the "ABC: A Child's First Alphabet Book", it's fun to look at the pictures and find the other things that also fit in that category (letter for the alphabet book or number for the counting book.) The pictures are pretty and detailed, and the fairy tale theme is appealing. It's fun to reread because we try to find other things we may have missed previously.

From Publishers Weekly
Disguised as an Afghan Mujahideen, Goodwin, executive editor of Ladies Home Journal, shared the dangers and hardships of life in Afghanistan for three months in 1985. While in Soviet-held Kabul on a British passport, she observed the Sovietization of the people, especially the children. This is a rare account of a war from which journalists are banned, a riveting and inspiring chronicle of heroic resistance against superior arms in a genocidal conflict waged with carpet bombing, chemical weapons and massacres. Having witnessed atrocities, the author denounces what she avers is American ambivalence toward the Afghans. Her superb reportage and powerful appeal on their behalf is enhanced by the personal stories Afghans related to her. Photos not seen by PW. Major ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal
Investigative reporter Goodwin, who is executive editor of Ladies Home Journal , spent three months traveling with the Afghan resistance and here writes of her experiences. Her gripping narrative and multifaceted approach to this heartbreaking war result in a book that is hard to put down. Her descriptions of refugee camps in Pakistan; trips into Afghanistan itself; a trip to Kabul, where she met government officials; and an effort to contact families of Russian soldiers killed in the war, vividly illustrate the senselessness of war. A good volume for a current affairs or general collection. Donald Clay Johnson, Coll. of William & Mary Lib., Williamsburg, Va.

one of the first to tell such a story
By Julia Simpson
Jan Goodwin was an investigative companion to freedom fighters at a time before the Taliban had infiltrated Afghanistan with their toxic view of the world and suppression tactics. Her book has not been made redundant by the wave of books by subsequent journalists; it stands out as a historic feat on its own. Many of these Afghan fighters were wiped out or driven out, for there was a reason they were called freedom fighters.

I reviewed her book in 1988 for the Arab News and was bowled over by it then. Today I am stunned to see so few reviews. Consider for a moment that her journey began when, as executive editor of Ladies' Home Journal magazine, she was handed the startling fact that a full fifty percent of the world's refugees were Afghan. She couldn't understand why a story like that wasn't being written.

How many executive editors of a women's magazine would hurry off to a war zone to get that story? There was hardly a precedent for her to follow in those days.

After touring some Pakistan refugee camps and conducting scores of interviews, she managed to get letters of introduction to two resistance groups, one of them being NIFA, the National Islamic front of Afghanistan. It was probably the most broad-minded and moderate resistance group, and the commander who welcomed her, Wakil Akberzai, explained how willing he was to smuggle in foreign correspondents for the sake of gaining freedom from Soviet oppression. Goodwin's first excursion into the war zone lasted only four days, but it left her with haunting memories, as of the blind young mother, Kabalee, who admitted that her greatest fear in crossing the mountain passes en route to refuge had been that each time she lost her footing she feared she would drop her five month old son over the edge. Goodwin, an excellent, writer, shows in her own descriptive terms how treacherous these paths were (are).

What I remember most and loved about the book is Goodwin's courage, her crazy new ideas that could have gotten her killed, yet which she kept following up on. After three months in Afghanistan and secret excursions here and there, she snuck into the Soviet Union in order to try and contact the families of dead Soviet soldiers, some of them Muslim. She just wanted to elicit their views and feelings--something any great reporter worth his salt would do.

She got so ill with all of this work that the reader suspects it was threat of dying that forced her to toss down the pen.

Any student of modern Afghanistan history would be seriously mistaken to not read this book. It is embracing!

Three months with the Mujahideen in Afghanistan
By SophiesPlace
Jan Goodwin, executive editor of Ladies Home Journal, lived and traveled with the Mujahideen Freedom Fighters in Afghanistan for three months, when Russia invaded Afghanistan.

She shared their missions, what little food was available, and their hardships. They fought freezing temperatures, 120 degree blistering heat, mountainous terrain, and attacks from Russian gunships.

You get to know these freedom fighters, and what they were fighting for.

When she left Afghanistan she went to Russia with war letters found on dead Russian soldiers to deliver to their families.

When the night came, it came fast. The sky yellowed, like a week-old bruise, and then the sun began its descent into the desert floor, dropping out of the clouds as if it were falling. The further it fell, the quicker the sky changed, until the sun was gone from view and all that remained was a smear of red cloud, like a bloodstain above the Mojave.

The city limits emerged from the darkness about twenty minutes later: to start with just small, single-story satellite towns, street lights flickering in the shadows either side of the Interstate; then, as the 15 carved its way through the Southern Highlands, a brighter, more persistent glow. Housing estates, strip malls and vast tracts of undeveloped land, illuminated by billboards and the orange tang of sodium lights; and then the neon: casinos, motels and diners, unfurling beyond the freeway. Finally, as I came off the Interstate at Exit 36, I saw the Strip for the first time, its dazzling, monolithic structures rising out of the flatness of the desert, like a star going supernova.

Even a quarter of a mile short of its parking garage, I knew the Mandalay Bay would be a step up from the last time I’d stayed in Las Vegas. On my first trip to the city five years before, the newspaper had taken care of the booking and left me to rot in a downtown grind joint called The George. “George,” I later found out, was casino lingo for a good tipper. Except the only people doing the gambling at The George were the homeless, placing 25c minimum bets on the blackjack tables out front so they could scrape together enough for a bottle of something strong. This time, as I nosed the hired Dodge Stratus into a space on a huge rooftop parking lot, I passed eight-story signs advertising a televised UFC fight at the hotel in January, and I knew I’d made the right decision to book it myself: last time out, the only fighting I’d seen anywhere close to The George was of the fully drunk kind.

I turned off the ignition and as the engine and radio died, the sound of the Las Vegas Freeway filled the car; a low, unbroken hum, like the rumble of an approaching storm. Further off, disguised against the sky except for the metronomic wink of its taillight, was a plane making its final approach into McCarran. As I sat there, a feeling of familiarity washed over me, of being in this city, of hearing these same sounds, five years before. I remembered a lot from that trip, but mostly I just remembered the noise and the lights.

I opened the door of the Dodge and got out.

The night was cool, but not unpleasant. Popping the trunk, I grabbed my overnight bag and headed across the lot. Inside, the hotel was just as loud, the cars and planes and video screens replaced by the incessant ding, ding, ding of slot machines. I waited in line for the front desk, watching as a young couple in their twenties started arguing with one another. By the time I was handed my room card, I was ready for silence—or as close as I could get.

I showered, changed, and raided the minibar, then called Derryn to let her know I’d arrived okay. We chatted for a while. She’d found it hard to adapt to our new life on the West Coast initially: we had no friends here, she had no job, and in our Santa Monica apartment block our neighbors operated a hermetically sealed clique. Gradually, though, things were changing. Back home, she’d been an A&E nurse for twelve years before giving it up to come out to the States with me, and that experience had landed her a short-term contract at a surgery a block from where we lived. She was only taking blood and helping doctors patch up wounds—much more sedate than the work she’d been doing back in London—but she loved it. It got her out meeting people, and it brought in a little money, plus she got weekends off too, which meant she could go to the beach.

“You going to spend all our money, Raker?” she asked after a while.

“Not tonight. Maybe tomorrow.”

“Do you even know how to play cards?”

“I know how to play Snap.”

I could tell she was smiling. “I’d love to be a fly on the wall when you sidle up to the blackjack table pretending you know what you’re doing.”

“I do know what I’m doing.”

“You can’t even play Monopoly.”

“My biggest fan talks me up again.”

She laughed. “You’ll have to take me with you next time.”

“I will.”

“I’d love to see Vegas.”

I turned on the bed and looked out through the window. Millions of lights winked back through the glass. “I know. I’ll bring you here one day, I promise.”

---

At one-thirty, I was still awake, even if I didn’t understand why. I’d been up until four the previous night filing a story, was fried after the five-hour drive down from LA—but I just couldn’t drop off. Eventually, I gave up trying, got dressed and headed downstairs.

When the elevator doors opened, it was like time had stood still: the foyer, the sounds of the slots, the music being piped through speakers, it was all exactly the same as I’d left it. The only thing missing was the couple screaming at one another. This was the reason casinos didn’t put clocks up: day, night, it was all the same, like being in stasis. You came in and your body clock disengaged. I looked at my watch again and saw it was closing in on two—but it may as well have been midmorning. Men and women were wandering around in tracksuits and shorts like they’d just come from the tennis courts.

I headed to a bar next to the hotel lobby. Even at one-fifty in the morning I had plenty of company: a couple in their sixties, a woman talking on her phone in a booth, a guy leaning over a laptop, and a group of five men sitting at one of the tables, laughing raucously at something one of them had said. Sliding in at the stools, I ordered a beer, picked at a bowl of nuts and flicked through a copy of the Las Vegas Sun that had been left behind. The front-page story neatly echoed the one I’d been sent down to follow up: Las Vegas, the bulletproof city. While some analysts were predicting a recession inside the next twelve months, America’s gaming capital was set to make a record eight billion dollars.

About ten minutes later, as I got to the sports pages, a guy sat down beside me at the bar and ordered another round of drinks. I looked up, he looked back at me, and then he returned to his table with a tray full of shots. A couple of seconds later, a faint memory surfaced, and—as I tried to grasp at it—a feeling of recognition washed over me: I knew him. I turned on my stool and glanced back over my shoulder. The man placed the tray down on the table—and then looked back at me. He knows me too. There was a moment of hesitation for both of us, paused at each end of the room—but then it seemed to click for him, a smile broke out on his face and he returned to me.

“David?”

As soon as he spoke, the memory became fully formed: Lee Wilkins. We’d grown up together, lived in the same village, gone to the same school—and we’d left the same sixth-form college and never spoken since. Now, almost twenty years later, here he was: different from how I remembered, but not that different. More weight around his face and middle, hair shaved, dark stubble lining his jaw, but otherwise the same guy: five-ten, stocky, a scar to the left of his nose where he’d fallen out of a tree we’d been climbing.

“Lee?”

“Yes!” An even bigger smile spread across his face and we shook hands. “Bloody hell,” he said. “I thought when I saw you, ‘He looks familiar,’ but I just never figured . . .”

“Are you on holiday here?”

“No,” he said, perching himself on the stool next to me. “I live here now. Been in Vegas for two years; been in the States for seven.”

“Doing what?”

“You remember I wanted to be an actor?”

“I remember that, yeah.”

He stopped; smiled. “Well, it didn’t work out.”

“Oh.”

“No, I mean it didn’t work out in the way I thought it would. I spent my first five years in LA trying to catch a break, waiting tables and turning up at auditions. Got some minor roles here and there but nothing anyone would have seen me in. Then I started compering at this comedy club in West Hollywood, and things got a little crazy. Ended up going down so well, I became the act. That went on for a year, then I was offered a job down here in Vegas, as the main compere at this big comedy club just off the Strip. A few months back, I was offered an even better job by the guy who runs the entertainment in the MGM hotels, so now I travel between here, the Luxor, New York, the Mirage, the Grand, all of them. It’s been pretty amazing.”

“Wow. That’s incredible, Lee. Congratulations.”

“Right place, right time, I guess.”

“Or you’re just really good at it.”

He shrugged. “I can’t believe it’s you. Here.”

“I know.”

“So what are you doing in Vegas?”

“You remember I wanted to be a journalist?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, that did work out.”

“Fantastic. Are you working now?”

“Yeah.” I looked around me. “Well, I’m working tomorrow.”

“You live here?”

“No. I’m just down from LA for the night.”

“Doing what?”

I tapped the front page of the Sun. “Writing about money.”

“Are you a correspondent or something?”

“Just until the elections are over next year, and then I head back to London. The paper’s pretty excited about the idea of Obama, which is why I’m out here so early.”

“Anyone’s better than Bush, right?”

“I guess we’ll see next year.”

“How come you’re based on the West Coast?”

“I was based in DC last time I was out, but this time I’m here for much longer. So, I’m spending six months in LA to cover the buildup from California, and then I move to DC to cover the last six months from Capitol Hill.” I nodded at the Sun again. “Thing is, at the moment, it’s still early days, so there’s nothing to talk about. Which is why I’m down here trying to justify my existence.”

“Not a bad place to come for a night.”

“Noisy.”

He laughed. “Yeah, I guess it is.”

We ordered more beers and sat at the bar and talked, covering the nineteen years since we’d left home. I’d grown up on a farm, in the hills surrounding our village, but when I headed to London and it dawned on my parents that I wasn’t going to be taking over the running of it anytime soon, they started winding it down and paying into a cottage.

“And then Mum died.”

Lee gave a solemn nod of the head.

I shrugged. “It was pretty much all downhill from there: I helped Dad get the farm sold and moved him into the village, but he could never really handle it on his own.”

“Is he still around?”

“No. He died almost two years ago.”

I hadn’t been back home since.

The conversation moved on and got brighter, Lee telling me how his mum had remarried and now lived in Torquay, how his sister was a teacher, how he was still single and loving it, even if his mum wanted him to settle down. “They flew out earlier in the year, and Mum

basically asked me when I was going to get married, once a day for three weeks.” He rolled his eyes, and then asked, “So how long have you been married to Diane?” He was busy polishing off his fifth bottle of beer, so I forgave him the slip-up. We were both a little worse for wear: him— two bottles ahead of me—on alcohol, me on a lack of sleep.

“Derryn.”

“Shit.” He laughed. “Sorry. Derryn.”

The bar was quieter now, all the men he’d been drinking with earlier off in the casino somewhere. “It’ll be thirteen years this year.”’

“Wow.”

“Yeah, it’s been good.”

He nodded. “I admire you, man. Envy you too.” He nodded a second time and then sank the rest of his beer. “And now I’ve got to use the can.”

He rocked from side to side slightly as he shifted away from the bar, and patted me gently on the shoulder as he passed. Then he headed to the toilets.

And I never saw him again.

Too complicated, too coincidental, too contrived
By booklover343
I enjoy books about missing persons cases and picked up this novel because of the description on the book jacket. To me, though, it felt as if the missing persons aspect of the story was a minor part of the plot.

David Raker is asked by a former friend/girlfriend to look into the disappearance of her sister's family. One day the entire family (husband, wife, and two daughters) simply disappeared. This part of the story, however, does not start for a couple of chapters into the book when body parts have already washed up onto a beach not far from David's home.

David is intrigued by the missing persons case and takes it on (apparently at no charge) and learns that the police did a cursory investigation and then sort of dropped the case. Somehow David is able to dig deeper than the police investigators.

One other reviewer mentioned that this is a pretty violent book, and I have to admit that is true. It's hard to believe that an unpaid investigator would keep going when folks around him are dying, he is beaten and nearly killed on several occasions, and the whole scenario just keeps getting more complicated.

After getting about three-fourths of the way through, I had the feeling that it would never end. It felt to me that the author had included just too many plot twists and turns and had to take the time to unravel them. Some of the twists did seem to far-fetched to me.

Felt the loss of the prior books but still a great read.
By Ivy
David Raker isn’t your typical private investigator, David finds missing people. After a near death encounter David returns to his home village to recover. After a body washes up on the beach David is asked by a former girlfriend for a favor. Her sister Carrie, her husband Paul, and nieces Annabelle and Olivia have disappeared. Would he please find them?

NEVER COMING BACK introduces Raker on his first trip to Las Vegas as an investigative journalist in 2007. We next meet him five years later at his parents’ old cottage in Devon recovering from a near death encounter with a knife. When a body washes up on the beach it stirs up the village and leads to an encounter with Emily, a girlfriend from his late teens. She wants David to find her sister and her sister’s family. They disappeared without a trace under odd circumstances over a year ago.
David isn’t quite up to snuff but agrees to see what he can turn up.

NEVER COMING BACK is quick paced with plenty of twists, turns, and surprises to keep readers guessing right up to the end. Despite changing viewpoints and alternating between past and present it isn’t hard to follow. The settings are descriptive giving readers a sense of immediacy and “being there”. The characters are extremely well fleshed and believable. The writing, mystery, characters, and location all add up to an absorbing reading experience. NEVER COMING BACK is hard to put down once you’ve picked it up.
That being said I did have a few issues.
The lesser issue is Cornell, the villain in NEVER COMING BACK. Cold and unfeeling, killing without compunction, there’s little Cornell holds dear but he’s willing to kill anyone who threatens it, whatever it is. Cornell and the fear he evokes in those who encounter him becomes heavy handed and repetitive.
My biggest issue is that here in the States NEVER COMING BACK is the first David Raker release; however it isn’t the first in the series. There are five years worth of Raker’s experiences missing. He’s a widower, avoiding Liz (whoever she is), and recovering from a nearly fatal stab wound to the stomach. What was the catalyst that turned him from investigative reporter to missing person investigator? Why does he feel so responsible for the missing? How does he support himself and pay people like Spike? What are the origins of his contentious relationship with Healy? What case led to the man who took numerous lives and almost took Raker’s? What about Liz and their past? Obviously I have a lot of questions. I felt the loss of those years and the evolution of David from the man introduced in Las Vegas to the convalescent re-introduced five years later in Devon. I’d love to find the prior books and get caught up before I read further. If that isn’t possible it won’t prevent me reading David Raker’s continuing investigations but I’ll always have that niggling sense of missing pieces.

I like the premise of finding the missing
By Luanne Ollivier
Tim Weaver is a best selling author in the UK, but Never Coming Back is his first release in North America.

Never Coming Back is actually the fourth book in Weaver's David Raker series. Raker, a former journalist, is now a missing persons investigator - indeed, he is driven by the need to 'find the lost.'

While visiting family in Devon, Raker is approached by an old girlfriend. She's heard about Raker's talents and wants to hire him as her sister and family have gone missing. More than missing - it's like they've disappeared. Everything in the house was left, including dinner on the table and the family dog - and not a trace of them since. The police investigation seems to have hit a dead end. Raker is intrigued by the case and agrees to look into it.

I admit to feeling slightly lost in the first few chapters as there are two seeming protagonists. Colm Healy is a retired Met officer who is living with Raker. Reference is made to past cases and occurrences in the beginning. However as the book progressed, I quickly caught up with who was who and realized that Raker was the lead. (But I found Healy obnoxious and abrasive and I wasn't quite sure of his role in this book. It would be interesting to read the past three books to see what has gone on before)

I too was hooked by the missing family. Where could they have gone? Taken or gone by their own decision?

Weaver tantalizingly includes italicized chapters from the past, starting eighteen months ago and moving forward until past and present meet. The first entry had me wondering how in the world this would tie in with the family's disappearance. The who is revealed, but the why is the largest part of the plot and definitely kept me guessing.

Weaver's plot is big and far reaching - the novel has two settings - England and Las Vegas. Weaver does a great job with bringing his settings to life. (I was fascinated with the abandoned village in England) Weaver's tale is dark and gritty, with a violent antagonist who is particularly chilling I thought a few of the plot twists were a bit far-fetched, but this didn't detract from my rapid page turning. The ending was great, with a last turn that I did not see coming. I appreciate being surprised in the final pages of a book.

I like Raker as a character, as well as the missing persons idea. I wouldn't hesitate to pick up another book by this author. The fifth in the series, Fall From Grace, releases in the UK mid August.

Great for spanish book for young children
By Martha S. Horton
I love this book, the illustrations are so rich and beautiful it captivates children of all ages. The phrases are simple and children can understand very well what is happening even if they don't understand the words. I read it to my 5 and my 2 year old, they love all the little critters in it. I decided to buy because it was always checked out at the library.
There are so few books in Spanish for children that are well translated, engaging and fun to look at, this and Quiero a mi papa porque... are two of the best ones out there.

Lewis and Clark Trail, The: Then and Now (Lewis & Clark Expedition), by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent

When the Lewis and Clark expedition departed on its voyage of exploration in May of 1804, the region of North America west of the Mississippi River was a blank spot on the map. Lewis and Clark were to fill it in with rivers and mountains, Indian tribes, and animals new to European Americans. Today the West is a completely different place from what it was two hundred years ago. Every inch has been mapped, and much of its land has been covered by farms, ranches, cities, and towns. Award-winning author of more than a hundred nonfiction books for children, Dorothy Hinshaw Patent and photographer William Muñoz capture the contrast between the American West then and now in this informative volume, aided by old prints, photographs, and paintings.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-This book adds little to the body of work already available. The title promises comparisons between the trail's past and present but for the most part this is another recounting of the journey. The stress is so much on the "then" that when mention of "now" comes, it seems to interrupt the flow, intruding on readers' growing interest in the progress of the expedition. For example, just as the explorers have crossed the Bitterroot Valley and prepare to turn west into the mountains, Patent discusses the Bitterroot Valley today and how modern techniques have helped pinpoint the site of the camp. The two-page chapters are each introduced with a quotation-usually from an expedition journal-and illustrated with full-color photographs and historical paintings. This does not allow for much depth in or development of the topics. The journey and the participants make for fascinating reading and Patent does a good job of conveying the hardships involved. There are, however, some problems with the text. Told in the first chapter that the goal is to reach the Pacific Ocean, readers will be surprised to find no mention of the explorers reaching the coast. Only the inset map shows that the second winter camp, Fort Clatsop, is located by the Pacific. Patent extols the talents and backgrounds of the men chosen for the Corps of Discovery but then readers come to "Clark also brought along his black slave, York," verbally relegating the man to subhuman status. Rhoda Blumberg's The Incredible Journey of Lewis and Clark (Morrow, 1995) is a much better choice.

From Booklist
Gr. 4-8. In this well-illustrated, large-format book, Patent provides a succinct narrative account of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, beginning with a realistically harsh, you-are-there introduction to life with the Corps of Discovery. Among the many books on the subject appearing in time for the bicentennial of that event, including Patent's Animals on the Trail with Lewis and Clark (2002), this one distinguishes itself by incorporating information about how the land, rivers, vegetation, wildlife and trails today differ from what Lewis and Clark saw 200 years ago. Each double-page spread focuses on a specific topic, such as "Meeting the Sioux" or "The Great Falls," and most are introduced with a small map and a journal entry by Lewis, Clark, or another expedition member. The full-color illustrations will include maps, present-day photos, and reproductions of the period. A well-written presentation of the topic. Carolyn Phelan

A solid introduction to the Lewis & Clark Expedition
By Lawrance Bernabo
The story of the Lewis and Clark expedition is the one great exploration of the American continent that was actually undertaken by Americans rather than by Europeans visiting the New World. "The Lewis and Clark Trail Then and Now," with text by Dorothy Hinshaw Patent and Photographs by William Munoz, compares the way things have changed along the route almost two hundred years later. When Lewis and Clark left St. Louis in May of 1804 the United States was a land without telephones, railroads, cars, electrical equipment or dozens of other modern conveniences we take for granted. The region of North American between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Ocean was fill of rivers and mountains, native tribes and indigenous animals, all waiting to be "discovered." Today, this entire region has been mapped, and a lot of that uninhabited land is now covered by farms and ranches, towns and cities. Even the mighty Missouri and Columbia Rivers that Lewis and Clark followed have been damned. Still, there are wilderness areas, such as the Rocky Mountains, where what you would see today has changed little from the time Lewis and Clark first trekked through their landscapes.
However, overall the emphasis in this book is more on the "then," even though most of the pictures are of the "now." There is a reproduction of an 1802 map showing the great area of the unexplored American West and some early 19th-century paintings, but the photographs are of contemporary vistas and shots of some of the equipment taken on the expedition. The book does not make an attempt to match up old paintings with new photographs, but rather tries to combine them to give a sense of the places visited and the peoples met along the way. Ultimately, the book fills in the spaces between that unfinished map at the start of the book and the completed map made by Clark that appears at the end. Each chapter is essentially a two-page spread on chronologically arranged topics from Members of the Expedition and Life on the River to Finding the Shoshone and Descending the Might Columbia. The net effect is a concise look at the history making expedition and how it fulfilled President Thomas Jefferson's mandate. Young students assigned to research the topic or simply interested in this part of American history will find "The Lewis and Clark Trail: Now and Then" provides a solid look at the subject.

Kindergarten-Grade 2–Children will delight in this fourth whimsical offering in this popular series. Kate, a cat, and Digby, a dog, continue their unlikely friendship, which is based on true affection, seasoned with a bit of conflict and tempered by the ability to seek out compromise. The five vignettes have a simple narrative appeal that will engage beginning readers. Youngsters will relate to the frustration that the friends feel, particularly when Kate wants to go for a walk but Digby wants to finish his book, and to their concern for one another's feelings. Parents and teachers will appreciate the focus on solving one's own problems–no tattletales in this book. Winborn's expressive ink drawings are awash with cheerful hues and provide a pleasing visual story line.–Robyn Walker, Elgin Court Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada

Gr. 1-2. The amusing fourth book about neighbors Digby (a dog) and Kate (a cat) includes five short stories. Three episodes focus on ways that the friends manage to annoy each other and how they resolve their conflicts. Another features Kate splashing through puddles in her new boots. The most entertaining tale plays on the "dressed animal" convention in children's stories. Digby urges Kate to befriend a mouse in her house instead of hunting him. Kate tries to see things Digby's way, but in the end she's not just a furry person in a cat costume, but a feline whose nature tells her to pounce. Bright with colorful washes, Winborn's drawings clearly convey the animals' emotions as well as their actions. The scene when Kate and the mouse exchange forced smiles sets up the rising tension to perfection, enhancing the laugh quotient of Kate's next line: "Digby, that mouse is so cute, I could eat him up." 4 1/2 Sweet and Sassy Fun
By M. Allen Greenbaum
"Digby and Kate" is a cute little book consisting of five short stories aimed at toddlers and young beginning readers. Digby the dog and Kate the cat have small arguments over the kind of small issues that longtime couples and friends often face: Annoying habits, different interests, and out-of-synch temperaments. Like most companions, Digby and Kate work out their problems, sooner or later, and get back to what they really want most of all: Being together.

OF course, it's not all making nice with these two. Author Baker gives each friend a snappy tongue, and enough knowledge about the other to "push their buttons (or, perhaps, "pull their strings," for the cat). When Digby asked Kate to stop her incessant counting in the story "1, 2, 3," she does, only to then begin reciting the alphabet! The friends achieve a more mutually satisfying solution in "The Piano." Kate is impatient with Digby's piano practicing and wonders when he's going to "play some real music." Digby holds his ground ("I'm not ready yet"), but gives Kate some headphones so that they can each enjoy the music they want to hear. Some fundamental Canine/Feline differences are explored in the almost violent "That Mouse." When Digby urges Kate to make friends with a mouse, she pretends to give it a try. The mouse (cleverly shown listening on the other side of the mouse hole) believes Kate's transformation, and appears at the entrance. Kate almost grabs the mouse!

"Boots" is one of the funniest stories, because it just rings so true. Kate is very, very excited about her brand new boots. To show herself that they're waterproof, she jumps into each increasingly large puddle on the way to Digby's, each time exclaiming how her feet are still dry. However, Kate seems oblivious to the fact the rest of her is getting soaking wet with each joyous jump. The last story, "Copycat" has the weakest plot, but again shows Digby not completely giving into Kate's manipulations, with the two friends eventually making up.

Baker writes sweet stories with just enough conflict to keep kids interested. The wisecracks and verbal sparring are clever, funny, and add to the realism. The small but colorful illustrations by Ms. Winborn allow plenty of comfortable space between text and pictures, but I was disappointed in the pictures of the two protagonists. Kate is just not that appealing, and Digby looks more like a wolf than a dog. A small complaint, but one wishes that the illustrations were as excellent as the stories. Still, this is a nice junior "chapter book" (each story is about 9 or so small pages long) for the small fry.
