Few books for children attempt the richness of ideas and pictures found here, wrote Booklist about Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Now, in this stunning sequel, the lush folkloric illustration style of Jane Ray augments the fluid storytelling of Mary Hoffman to explore the eternal mysteries of the heavens--the sun, moon, and stars. This well-researched and highly readable book presents myths and legends gathered from all over, including China, Japan, Egypt, Greece, the Caribbean, and North America. Accompanying these stories are pages of fascinating folk beliefs, sayings, and rhymes of skylore. Jane Ray's sumptuous illustrations, rich with silver and gold, are more exquisite than ever. The smooth, captionlike text makes the book ideal for browsing; its wide range will coordinate with classroom units on ancient astronomy, myths, legends, and cultural history. Sure to please young and old alike. Jane Ray and Mary Hoffman both live in England.

From Publishers Weekly
Hoffman and Ray look to the heavens in this sparkling collection of myths and legends from around the world, a follow-up to their companion book Earth, Fire, Water, Air. Hoffman's colloquial tone whisks readers through a volume chockablock with captivating tales inspired by the wonders of science and the natural world. With examples from ancient Egypt and Julius Caesar's Rome, the beginning segment establishes the sky as storybook, map and calendar. Subsequent sections on sun, moon and stars combine lesser-known tales with those of Phaeton, who meets his death trying to drive his father's chariot of the sun across the sky; Caribbean trickster/spider man Anancy, who gives the moon to his children; and the "Circle of Beasts," a description of all 12 signs of the zodiac. Hoffman also provides brief, captionlike superstitions, sayings and traditions in spreads entitled "Sunlore," "Moonlore" and "Starlore." As accompaniment to a text spanning cultures, lands and histories, Ray offers a varied tapestry of dreamlike images that combine elements of fantasy with intricate folk art borders and motifs. For each passage, she sets a dramatically different stage, incorporating dazzling costumes and designs from Native American, Aztec and Japanese traditions, among others. Many of the paintings also glitter with flashes of gold or silver, befitting a book about the brightest lights of the sky. All ages.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6-In this splendid collaboration following Earth, Fire, Water, Air (Dutton, 1995), the author's lean style again complements the artist's lush one. More than 20 legends and myths from around the world surrounding the "appearance and movement of the sun, moon, and stars" are interspersed with bits of factual information and lore. Succinctly but resonantly retold, the stories show the sky as a blank screen on which every culture projects its imagination. There are Latvian, Aztec-Mayan, Korean, Hindu, and Australian-Aboriginal examples, as well as better-known Greek (Phaeton, Cassiopeia), Norse, English, and Japanese tales. A brief section "About the Stories" cites some very eclectic sources. The brilliant pictures, spattered with silver and gold, exactly suit the heavenly subjects. Ray adapts her signature style to suggest the artistic traditions of each story's cultural origin. Folklike frames, intricately patterned textiles, and naive compositions are both dense and accessible, and the depth and variety of hues are a delight. A more romantic or engaging introduction to myths of the cosmos could hardly be imagined.
Patricia Lothrop-Green, St. George's School, Newport, RI

From Booklist
This companion piece to the duo's Earth, Fire, Water, Air (1996) combines facts and lore and Ray's glorious pictures into a resource that can be used in many ways. "The sky is a vast storybook . . . but it doesn't tell the same stories to everyone." Following an introduction that explains how the ancients looked at the sky, the book is divided by each element in the title. Stories from various cultures, including the Egyptian, Korean, Chinese, Aztec, and Navajo, are augmented by bits of information and lore that enrich the book. Hoffman's story selection is excellent and carefully sourced; most of the retellings will hold readers' attention, though the prose is occasionally stiff. Ray's pictures, on the other hand, soar. Spreads, sidebars, and full-page pictures are intricately designed and executed, touched as usual with bits of silver and gold. A particularly handsome piece of bookmaking that will spark imaginations. Ilene Cooper

Delightful for Children
By Alison Miller-frost
This book combined with the other book out by Hoffman has been a favorite of the children I work with for years. This book was recently borrowed and the children I see annually are begging me to get another copy as they love the brief myths available, especially regarding the zodiac. The kids would definitely give these books five stars while I would like to see just a little more detail or a bibliography for those interested in learning more. Thanks for making such a successful book.

Mackintosh Furniture, by Roger Billcliffe

In a career of only twenty-five years, Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed well over 300 pieces of furniture, the majority in two relatively short periods, 1897-1905 and 1916-1919. This book gives an unprecedented overview of Mackintosh's body of work and illustrates*with over 400 photographs*all of his major pieces as well as the interiors for which they were produced. The range of works presented here is quite remarkable, featuring not only the elongated chairs for which Mackintosh is most remembered, but also tables, bookcases, beds, bathroom fittings, and even a pulpit and an organ. The pieces here range stylistically from the more routine late-Victorian pieces of his earliest period, through the white-painted OEpook School' furniture of 1901-03, to the geometrical severity of Mackintosh's work for W.J. Bassett-Lowke in 1916-19. Mackintosh Furniture is a comprehensive look at a designer whose influence has only recently begun to fully realize itself, and is a must for both students and aficionados of design.

The trouble is, they like the first one so much that they ask for more and more, begging her for "just one more story!" These porcine reimaginings are sure to make little ones laugh out loud. They include: "The Pig Prince," "The Ugly Pigling" "Piggerella," and "The Prince and the Porker." The perfect bedtime read-aloud, Just One More Story offers five delightfully funny tales in one book--enough for even the most wide-awake little pig...or child!

From Publishers Weekly
"Once upon a time, there was a little pig who loved listening to stories," and that is no exaggeration, since the wee porker (along with his squealing-prone sister) refuses to go to sleep without being read four bedtime tales "about the olden days, when pigs were kings and walked in golden gowns." Mother Pig obliges with her pig's-eye view of the Frog Prince (here the amphibious hero starts out as a "nasty and horrible" boy), the Ugly Duckling, Cinderella and the Prince and the Pauper. What makes this volume from a British team more than just tales-within-a-tale is its novelty format: each of the four bedtime books from which Mother Pig reads is reproduced as a miniature, multi-page volume that's literally pasted onto the spread where it is introduced. The end result should be hog heaven, but the prose is polite and bland (except for the Pig Prince's characterization as an "ugly boy," which seems mean-spirited), so the comic potential of the framing tale or the porcine parodies goes unrealized. It's left to Moseng's pictures to bring home the bacon, which they do with an endearing goofiness. Ages 4-8. (Nov.)
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-A collection of stories that a mother pig reads to her piglets. The selections themselves are retellings of familiar fairy tales with pigs as characters, e.g., "The Pig Prince," "The Ugly Pigling." These tales appear in little booklets glued onto double-page spreads that show the mother interacting with her youngsters. The illustrations are simple and appealing for young children, and they can actually turn the pages of the smaller books. Teachers and librarians may want to consider this effort as an addition to other fairy-tale variations. It will be fun for read-aloud, but be sure children know the real characters before they pig out on these little porkers.

Great reading and also a Reader's Theatre!
By Barbara Augsdorfer
I read this book countless times to my son from kindergarten through 2nd grade. Now I keep it in my "stuff" to read aloud to my students when substitute teaching and needing to fill 10-15 minutes. I also used it to introduce my third graders, when student teaching, to reader's theatre. I typed the text out in script form with five narrators, and each part a different reader (some of the smaller parts -- one or two lines -- could be read by the same person.) There are enough lines for 28 speakers if you like!!

It's a really cute story and my students always love it.

I bought this book for my almost 4 year old daughter, who immediately loved the "mini" books inside. She loves the retelling of each story with a pig-hero and now wants to hear "Just One More Story" every night before bed...LOL!

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8–Hannah, 15, her younger brother, and her twin sisters are orphaned when their father dies in fighting for the Union and their mother has a fatal heart attack when bushwhackers assault their home. They leave East Tennessee for Nashville to be with their only relative. When they arrive, they discover that their aunt has died. Homeless but not hopeless, Hannah struggles to keep them alive, and they eventually end up at a refugee camp set up by the Union forces. An army doctor and his wife are quite taken with the twins and offer to adopt them. Hannah wants only to return to their farm but Jasper likes his job with the railroad and wants to make it his life's work. Hannah is torn between her promise to her mother to keep the family together and to do what is best for her siblings. The idea for the book was based on a reenactment of civilian refugee camp life sponsored by the Ladies' Soldiers' Friends Society. However, the value of the story lies not in its historical content but in the description of the mixed emotions and suffering of friends and neighbors who suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of a conflict, the desperation of civilians in wartime, and the unending attempt of a teen to uphold a promise. The book would make for interesting discussions about authority, family bonds, and selflessness.–Nancy P. Reeder, Heathwood Hall Episcopal School, Columbia, SC

From Booklist
War has torn the soul out of Hannah's little Cumberland Mountain community in east Tennessee. While some neighbors steadfastly support the Confederate cause, Pa has joined the Union army. Mama and 15-year-old Hannah bravely carry on until Mama's sudden death after a nerve-shattering attack of bushwackers. Hannah then embarks on a perilous journey to Nashville with brother Jasper and their young twin sisters, hoping to meet up with an aunt--an iffy prospect at best. When the kids arrive, they find out that Aunt Ellen has passed away. Battling starvation and homelessness, they survive any way they can, at one point gathering cigar butts on the streets for a merchant who reuses the tobacco to roll cheap cigars. Ernst movingly shows that the calamity and upheaval of war extends far beyond the battlefields. Meanwhile, the plucky Hannah gradually beats the odds. Anne O'Malley

Set against the backdrop of the American Civil War, Hearts of Stone is a multifaceted coming of age tale.

Hannah Cameron is fourteen when her father joins the Union army, making enemies of the family's closest neighbors. Less than a year later, Hannah, younger brother Jasper, and five-year-old twins Maude and Mary are left parentless when their mother dies during a bushwhacker raid on their Eastern Tennessee home.

As Hannah grapples with her new role as caretaker, she must also deal with the very real horrors of war. After leading her siblings in an arduous two-hundred-mile journey to Nashville, Hannah must regroup when she learns that Aunt Ellen, her only living relative, died of a fever six weeks earlier. Alone in the world and demoralized, the Cameron children live on the streets, doing everything they can to stay together. Eventually they end up in a refugee camp, which is both a blessing and a curse, leading to even more trials for Hannah and her siblings.

Inspired by a Civil War reenactment of a civilian refugee camp, award-winning author Kathleen Ernst has crafted an historically-accurate novel that gives insight into the deprivations of war, the fallacy of prejudice, and what it means to be a family. Hearts of Stone is as memorable as it is hard to put down. Its plot has enough dramatic twists to keep even adult readers engaged. And, while protagonist Hannah is Ernst's most fully-drawn character, the other characters in the novel are far from one-dimensional.

Young readers will have no problem relating to the novel's spunky, stalwart protagonist and the lessons that Hannah learns throughout the novel are very appropriate for its target audience. In fact, Ernst seems to construct the story around Hannah's revelations, making them some of the most moving moments of the novel.

Of interest is Hannah's relationship with neighbor Ben, who is subtly cast as her soul mate and helpmeet. In a novel for a different audience, Hannah and Ben would be star-crossed lovers. In Hearts of Stone, however, their relationship is a testament to the importance of overcoming the divisiveness caused by things like the Civil War.

In the end, Hannah's coming of age is less about taking responsibility as it is learning how to forgive. It is only when Hannah forgives her father for leaving -- and forgives Ben for siding with the Confederacy -- that she discovers the true meaning of family and the foundation on which to build a hearth and a home.

A Fabulous read!
By Sherri R. Myers
Hannah Cameron was just fifteen years old when her father was killed fighting for the Union Army in the Civil War. As residents of Tennessee, his decision to fight against the Rebels in the South caused his family to be hated by most of their neighbors. Shortly after their father's death, Hannah, her nine-year-old brother Jasper, and her five-year-old twin sisters Mary and Maude are left orphans when their mother suddenly passes away after bushwhackers attack them. As the oldest, Hannah must find a way to care for the children, and decides to travel with them to Nashville in order to try to find their only remaining relative. After making the two-hundred-mile journey, the children are devastated to learn of Aunt Ellen's death only six weeks earlier. With nowhere else to go and too worn out to return home, they live on the streets, eventually finding their way to a refugee camp. They remain there for some time, suffering through more trials and hardships, longing for their home in Cumberland Mountain.

Hearts of Stone is a fantastic coming of age novel for young readers. Historically accurate and completely engaging, this dramatic book has won numerous awards. Kathleen Ernst used her knowledge and love of the Civil War era to write this remarkable novel, taking ten years to complete the task. Hannah is a determined young woman with the weight of her family's needs on her shoulders, which can quite readily be felt by the reader with Ms. Ernst's descriptive prose. Prejudice, hatred, forgiveness, and strong love for family combine to make Hearts of Stone a novel not soon forgotten. Incidences of stone throwing, stealing, death, and cigar smoking are present, but are needed to show the true circumstances of the time period.

In the book "Hearts of Stone" Hannah, a 15-year old, and her brother Jasper, and her twin sisters, Maude and Mary, lost everything besides each other. Their father went off to war and three months after he left, they got a letter saying that he had died. And that left just her and her siblings along with her mother, but not her mother for long. Her mother died from a heart attack because she got scared by the Army because they came in the house and took a lot of things from them. It scared her so she had a heart attack and dies.

So now that just leaves Hannah and her brother and sisters. And Hannah has to be the older one and take care of the younger ones. Sometimes she just cannot do it because her brother would get mad at her and not listen to her. She knows that she cannot take care of them herself. She knows she has got to do something. There are these families that were friends of their parents and they said that they could take them, but they would have to split apart because they did not have enough money to feed all four of them. She did not want to do that, because the one thing her mother wanted was for them to stay together. So she has to decide what to do.

They have an aunt that lives in Nashville, and Hannah decides to go to Nashville to find her. She thinks it is the only way to keep the family together. Hannah knows that it will be a long and dangerous journey all the way to Nashville. There was this one guy that they meet and they think he is all nice and everything; he was not very nice because he steals their horse. So they have to take only the things they need now and that is food and they cannot take most of that along. Then they meet this guy named Willie and he takes them the rest of the way to Nashville because that is where he was going anyways.

They get there and they ask people if they know their aunt. And then they find someone that knows her. They tell Hannah where she lives and they go there. But they soon find out that she is died. Hannah does not know what to do now.

What will she do???

From Publishers Weekly
It is 1876, and in Philadelphia the opening of the Centennial Exposition, already delayed several times, is threatened by the fiendish Doctor Helvitius. This megalomaniac has kidnapped two children in the care of the emperor of Brazil and vows to destroy the Exposition and all the world leaders present if the emperor does not accede to his demands. Desperate, President Grant lays this problem at the feet of 20-year-old Vesper Holly and her eminent guardian, Professor Brinton Garrett, who have already achieved renown for resolving knotty problems in countries far and fantastic in such titles as The Illyrian Adventure and The El Dorado Adventure . Brinny (as the professor is known to his intimates) exhibits admirable patriotism as he describes the hair-raising events that lead to the apparent downfall of Helvitius. Vesper and a faithful band of friends foil the dastardly plot of a Professor Moriarty-like villain in Alexander's thoroughly enjoyable romp. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-- This fifth Vesper Holly adventure is set during the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Once again Alexander successfully combines ingredients familiar to the series' readers--eccentrically entertaining characterizations, seamless plotting, and breakneck pace. Narrated as usual by Brinnie, Vesper's guardian and friend, the events are set in motion by an appeal from President Grant when the emperor of Brazil's grandchildren are kidnapped by none other than Vesper's nemesis, Dr. Helvitius. Vesper, who must deliver a ransom at Helvitius' demand, suspects her old enemy has a larger scheme in mind, as indeed he does. As usual, events pile on top of events and each chapter ends with a cliff-hanger, speeding readers to the exciting conclusion. Fans will welcome back friends from previous adventures, especially Tobias Wistar Passavant, "The Weed," who is coming into his own here as hero and as budding love interest for Vesper. Brinnie's narration is the accustomed diverting counterpoint to the action, enriched with amusing asides. In sum, this is a treat for followers of this series; indeed for anyone who enjoys a well-told adventure story. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library

Satisfying!
By X. Chen
This was a wonderful book, with characteristic Lloyd Alexander wit and humor, along with his deft story-telling. People of all ages will enjoy this latest escapade of Vesper Holly!
Unlike the other books in the Vesper Holly series, this book takes places in an actual place, Philadelphia (as you might have gathered from the title). The World Exposition is going to be held there, but the opening keeps on being delayed, problems of plagued it from the start. President Grant goes to Vesper Holly's home and pleads for Vesper to rescue the kidnapped children in the care of the Brazilian King. The stage is set for some grand Vesper Holly action with her guardian Brinnie, Smiler and Slider (from the previous books), and a new character, Weed in toll! This is a fabulous book!

One Great Book
By A Customer
I really enjoyed this book. It is by Lloyd Alexander, author of The High King winner of the Newbery Medal. One reason I enjoyed was that it kept on surprising me until the end.
It is not based on things that really happened, although it has people who really existed, such as President Ulysses S. Grant.
The adventure begins when Ulysses Grant comes to Vesper Holly's door asking for her help with a kidnaping of two children. The kidnaper is using the children to ransom the emperor of Brazil.
The kidnapper hates Vesper Holly, so he made it clear that bad things would happen to the children if she did not deliver the ransom. That way he can put her in danger to get revenge on her.

As always..fantastic
By A. Lindemann
The ever delightful Vesper Holly is back in this fifth chronicle by one of my favorite master storytellers. Vesper's resourcefulness, bravery and wit are ever-present while she falls in love (innocently) yet again. Her red hair, fiery personality, orphaned status and love for a certain fat cat conjure up another favorite heroine of the historical fiction world, exotic Nefret Emerson from the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters. Each of these books packs a lot of punch considering how short they are, making them perfect for any young reader.

Excellent introduction to Borges
By Glen Engel Cox
This collection is an excellent introduction to Borges, and clearly shows how he revolutionized the short story and became the pater familias of a new genre classification.
"The Aleph"--Like most of his stories, this one is brief but packs a lot of information into its short length. (For those who don't read outside of SF, imagine a J.G. Ballard condensed novel with more connections and a higher sense of the fantastic. Hmm, that was a worthless description. It is hard to find a match for Borges in the genre, because he was always succinct, and could never have survived in the dog-eat-dog world of pay by word.) The gimmick is simple--the aleph is to space what eternity is to time--but the method by which the author discovers it is unusual. I like Borges because his approach to a fantastic concept is unlike any found in the genre. Genre writing seems to emphasize the gimmick, in mainstream writing it is simply one part of the landscape against which the characters are placed. Only in Borges do all elements seem equal, similar in concept to his own aleph, to return in a style similar to Borges himself.
"Streetcorner Man"--A first-person tale of one night in the barrio, when the ones who talk big get their comeuppance by the quiet ones. OK, but I like my stories to have a little something more.
"The Approach to aI-Mu'tasim"--A review of a fictional book which reads, again, like a condensed novel, only in this case it truly is one. The literary device is ingenious, allowing Borges to comment on literary criticism at the same time he is creating literature.
"The Circular Ruins"--One of Borges' favorite subjects is the concept of infinity, another is creation. Here he bends the two together in a story that is also a metaphor for the process of setting and achieving goals.
"Death and the Compass"--A logic problem to a mystery story, almost like Poe. Poe, though, would have stretched it out to twice its length.
"The Life of Tadeo Isidoro Cruz (1829-1874)"--I did not quite follow this one. At one point I thought that maybe Cruz was going to be killing his own father, but instead he goes to the aid of himself?
"The Two Kings and Their Two Labyrinths"--A fable, or a sermon, that addresses what is a labyrinth. Highly appropriate subject for a Borges collection.
"The Dead Man"--A gaucho story. Think of it as a Louis L'amour story with Argentines and Brazilians instead of Mexicans and Texans. Okay, but it's still a western at heart.
"The Other Death"--This is what I look for in Borges: a fantastical study of memory and history, reality and dream. Pedro did not act like a hero in the battle... or did he?
"Ibn Hakkan al-Bokhari, Dead in His Labyrinth"--Another great story of mazes and mystery. Borges has an unusual way of framing his tales, usually with an objective third person narrator, that shortens the stories tremendously. I guess he did not get paid by the word.
"The Man On the Threshold"--Another mystery, but not quite as fantastic as the others. Some Of these stories are morality or revenge plays, that do not require much speculation.
"The Challenge"--A rehash of some of the gaucho themes, certainly my last favorite of his tropes. What I find interesting is the references to other stories flirt makes this seem like a reference article instead of a story.
"The Captive"--A short short about a boy captured as a young child by natives. Borges here formulates a question about the nature of memory.
"Borges and Myself"--Here, as in "Isidore Cruz" above, Borges talks about the nature of identity. When you look at how others perceive you and realize that that is not how you perceive yourself is a crisis of identity (as in here), or how people might perceive a younger version of you. I often look at my current life and wonder. There is no way that Glen circa. 1980 could have ever dreamed of becoming the Glen of 1998. Thoughts and hopes and goals are all so mutable. The funny thing is that I will reread these words 10 or more years from now and be struck by the same strangeness.
"The Maker"--A discussion of what it means to go blind, nominally about Homer, but also about Borges' own condition. I had not realized that Borges had gone blind before his death.
"The Intruder"--Borges says that his mother, who he dictated this story to, hated it, and I can see why. It's not something I would recommend to any woman, as it is quite misogynstic. However, it is an incredible story, and a fairly straightforward one for Borges, about friendship and brotherhood.
"The Immortals"--A science fiction tale, strangely incongruous here. Well done, but it seems much more dated than almost everything else in this collection (stories from 1933 to 1969).
"The Meeting"--Clever little tale about people and weapons. Almost a trick story, because the title refers to something other than what you expect.
"Pedro Salvadores"--Short short about dictatorships and living "underground" (actually, both literally and figuratively). Borges had a real knack for the short short, never an easy thing to write.
"Rosendo's Tale"--To come almost entirely full circle, this tale is a sequel or antidote to the second story, "Streetcorner Man." The gaucho here is more realistic, not so macho, and I find myself appreciating this more because of having seen the Hemingway-ish earlier story.
Finally, there is an autobiographical essay at the end, for those of us who wonder how Borges evolved (as Borges himself does in "Borges and Myself").

A writer one always wishes to know more about
By Shalom Freedman
Borges is the kind of great writer one always want to have more work of, and know more about. As in the long essay here he can be an autobiographical writer but always in his own special way. We are not going to get great adventures or powerful romance but rather the playing with possibilities, with ideas that are strikingly original. As with the autobiographical essay, the Borges story too has a special quality of its own often involving speculative journeys into territory little thought of by others. The title story 'The Aleph' is a perfect example of this as it combines a mystery with a search for metaphysical understanding. The tales in this collection are part of the 'ficciones' which made Borges famous. Often they confound and confuse but always nonetheless give a feeling of meaning and mystery that hold and impel the reader.

48-page book just like the Disney Movie.
By DR-J-J
This is not JUST a picture-book, though there are pictures on every page. This book does give you a good amount of text for those K-3rd grade readers (of course, some Kindergarteners can't read, some 5th graders are at a lower level and may like this book).

The tie into the movie (all graphic images are from the movie) makes interest level high. So, why not 5 stars? Perhaps it deserves 5 stars... it gives us exactly as you would expect, a synopsis of the movie. It is just hard for me to give the Disney storyline 5 stars. There are just too many divergent paths away from the Bible story for me to "love it." Some believers may find the divergent paths too much to take and give it one or two stars. That is understandable. I find that the movie opens up dialog between myself and my granddaughter about the real story of Moses.

this book along with all the Pooh board books was used at my autistic grand child's speech therapy sessions. She loves these large print board books and reads them over and over. Hope this helps someone out there.

My son was bored with it quickly
By Working Mom
This is truly old school Pooh. It's cute, but didn't hold my 21 month old's attention for very long - the color illustrations are not current or vibrant enough & the story is over very quick. Pooh get's stuck in the door because he eats too much honey & it takes them a week to pull him out - questionable story line -

A Honey of a Book
By mommyilene
This is a wonderful book! My 19 month old son loves hearing this book over and over again. He can point to the pictures and name the characters. He is familiar with this story because is is part of one of Pooh's adventure videos. This pictures are wonderful to look at and remind me of the 'old fashioned Pooh'. The words are very large and make it easy for a child to follow and point to while 'reading' the story. Definitely a family favorite.

"The only real game in the world I think - baseball"
By Shalom Freedman
This is a book about a legend. He more than any other player changed the game and made it America's national pasttime. After being the greatest pitcher of his time for Boston he was traded to the Yankees where he went on to begin making the home run synonymous with his name. In the house that Ruth built' Yankee Stadium along with Lou Gehrig he lead the Yankees of the 1920's to a string of pennants and World Series. Both on and off the field the Babe was outsized, and seemed to be unstoppable. He was the greatest player the game ever had and probably ever will have. He was in some sense a babe all his life, childlike and uncontrollable but he was also famous for acts of kindness, including the famous homerun hit on request by a young fan fatally ill. His love of the game and his love of life are now apart of America's legendary heritage.

From Publishers Weekly
Quigley, formerly an anti-gun lobbyist, explains in this disturbing, controversial book why she has undergone a complete change of mind. Her rationale: law enforcement officials cannot protect citizens from crime, hence a woman's best defense against sexual and other physical assault is a gun. Relating her own and others' experiences as victims of crime, the Los Angeles-based author argues that Mace and karate are ineffective protection, discusses the ethics of using weapons, how children can be kept safe from guns owned in the home, which gun to buy and the gun laws of each state. Her interviews here with rapists and victims reinforce her argument--and may convince additional numbers of women to acquire weapons. Major ad/promo; author tour.
Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Quigley, once a staff member of the National Committee for Handgun Control, the first anti-gun political action committee, made a radical change to advocate the arming of American women, which she sees as the last frontier for women to cross on the road to equality. Although she doesn't cite the origin of her statistic, she claims that 12 million women--or one out of eight--own guns. Herself a graduate of many practical-shooting schools throughout the country, Quigley thoroughly covers such aspects of gun ownership as the pros and cons of lethal force, choosing the proper weapon, and becoming proficient in its use through training. Other aspects peripheral to her topic, covering politics, ethics, and gun-control laws, are adequate but not uniformly strong. Recommended for public library collections where interest warrants.

An excellent book for women interested in learning about realistic self-defense methods.
By Joseph J. Truncale
We have made some progress over the years when it comes to our second amendment right "to keep and bear arms." However, we must stay forever vigilant to keep our far left dictator politicians from stealing this right from us in the future. This hardcover book (Armed and Female by Paxton Quigley) was published in 1989 but most of the material is still relevant today. This is a book every women needs to read.

The title claims 12 million women own guns but I suspect that number has probably doubled since this informative book first came out. The author was trained in the use of guns by several well-known experts, one of them being the legendary Massad Ayoob, whose Lethal Force Institute has trained thousands of people seeking knowledge on the use of firearms. Fortunately today, every state now has some type of "concealed carry" law on their books.

This book is organized into 12 sections. Section one begins by relating a emotional story of how one kidnaped woman successfully defended herself using her gun. The second section explains some of the ineffective and dangerous suggestions often promoted by the media in the woman's self-defense field. The third section covers rape and its consequences. The politics of self-defense is dealt with in the fourth section. Gun-control laws are explained in section five. Section six deals with the ethics of using lethal force. Where to seek professional advice on gun safety is covered in section seven. Kids and safety is emphasized in section eight. Important information on buying a gun is explained in section nine. Section ten covers practical gun handling and defense. Tactics for home defense is covered in section 11 and gun laws are explained in section twelve. The drawings of how to hold a gun and other basic gun handling techniques are clear and easy to understand.

In conclusion, using this book in combination with taking a gun handling course with a competent gun instructor is the best way to absorb all the valuable information in this book.

Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton (MEB))
