Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy, by Ilene Cooper

He would be a symbol of power, grace, and tragedy-but before he was JFK, he was sickly and scrappy, troubled and charming; he was a boy called Jack.

To Jack, it seemed as if his brother Joe, not quite two years older, would always triumph-in school, on the playing field, in his father's affections. Jack was the sloppy second son, the witty, disorganized dreamer who could never seem to stay well long enough to muster his talents-a risky failing in the success-driven Kennedy family. Young readers cannot help but be fascinated by this sympathetic portrait of a complex youth who, as he struggled with the pressures of father-son dynamics and the shadow of ill health, discovered within himself an intensity for living and a profoundly ironic humor.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Much has been written about the Kennedys, Jack in particular, so Cooper takes a different tack: she focuses on his early life, from his birth to his graduation from boarding school. In a lively style, she traces his entry into a prominent family, and shows the development of the family itself, as well as the relationships among its members. One that receives much attention is the competition between Jack and his older brother Joe, the heir apparent of their ambitious father, Joe Sr. The text is full of anecdotes and quotes from family members and intimates, so the book has a personal tone. Cooper also delves into the young Kennedy's personality and psyche, but masks many of the family's problems with softened explanations. Many black-and-white photos and reproductions of handwritten notes appear throughout. Source notes document the extensive research. A unique, highly readable choice for biography collections.

From Booklist
If you ask Ilene Cooper to name her favorite of the more than 30 books she has written, she doesn't miss a beat: Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy. "It's the book I always wanted to write." That's because she's been a Kennedy watcher since she was a kid. Her longtime interest made it easier to write this remarkable book, which follows Kennedy's life in detail from birth through his high-school graduation, and then concludes with an extensive afterword that takes him through his wartime exploits and into his political career.

Why a book on just the early years? "There are several good biographies that cover his whole life," Cooper explains. "I wanted to focus on him as a child and teenager. He faced all kinds of pressure--ill health, an intense sibling relationship, mixed family messages, prejudice against Irish Catholics in America--but he was able to maintain his own identity. I also wanted to write about what it was like to be a child in this remarkable, yet highly pressurized, family. Kennedy never wrote or spoke much about his growing-up years, so I was excited to see what I could find out."

She found out plenty. Delving into Kennedy's life, Cooper was fascinated to discover a boyhood that was unique in its circumstances yet achingly familiar in its reflection of the ways children try to find themselves as they grow up.

To fill out her portrait, she visited places where Jack spent his formative years--his birthplace in Brookline, Massachusetts, now a national historic site; Hyannis, where the family spent summers; and Wallingford, Connecticut, where Kennedy went to boarding school at Choate. The travel, she says, helped her put herself in the place of the young Kennedy. It was her several visits to the John Fitzgerald Kennedy Library in Boston, however, that meant the most to her. She spent time at the library going through Kennedy family papers, including several privately published books. She also found JFK's report cards and letters he wrote as a schoolboy, some of which are published in Jack. The experience of working in the library--and touring the museum that is also part of the building--was particularly meaningful for Cooper, who had helped raised money for its construction after JFK's assassination.

The quality of the research in jack shows both in the way background history is seamlessly interwoven with biography and in the extensive source notes. Jack brings not just a boy to life but also a period in American history--the period between the two world wars.

At the Kennedy Library, Cooper also discovered a wealth of family photographs, a number of which illustrate Jack. She recalls having a great time choosing and placing them in the manuscript. She also remembers her frustration when she couldn't find a photo to fit a piece of text that seemed to call for art. She did, indeed, find some extraordinary pictures--of the Kennedy siblings; of Jack with his father and with his high-school buddies. There's even a shot of a smiling young Kennedy in bed recuperating from one of the many illness that plagued his childhood.

One particular photo stands out for Cooper, a picture of teenage Kennedy looking guardedly at his older brother, Joe, Jr., who is oblivious to Jack's attention. "The expression and body language show the complicated feelings Jack had for Joe, Jr.," she says. "Here was Jack, this child who grew up in an extremely competitive family, with a brother who was designated heir apparent: Joe, the good son; Jack, the irresponsible screwup--who actually grew up to be president. What kid can't relate to a story like that?" Stephanie Zvirin

Five Stars- Great book!
By R. Esperanza
In Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy, Ilene Cooper brings us through the childhood of America’s 35th president. I felt as if I was with the Kennedy family from Jack’s birth to his presidency. Instead of just focusing on JFK, Ilene also introduces us with the other members of the Kennedy family, including his mother Rose Kennedy, his father Joseph Kennedy Sr., and Jack’s siblings; Joe Jr., Robert, Teddy, Rosemary, Kathleen, Eunice, Patricia, and Jean.
Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy starts when Jack is a toddler that is suffering with scarlet fever, a bacterial illness that was common but deadly at the time. He is cured when his father pulls strings to land Jack a spot in Boston City Hospital, where he could receive special treatment for his scarlet fever. His father’s actions potentially saved JFK’s life, and presidency.
Ilene then continues to tell Jack’s childhood. We hear about his days at Devotion, an elementary school in Brookline, the life of the Kennedy family in New York, his days at Choate, and his experience at Harvard. Many of the Kennedy’s personal experiences were also shared. One story that I particularly enjoyed was where Rose and her children were picking berries on Cape Cod. Eunice, one of Jack’s sisters, was stung by a bee and let out a shriek. Jack, who was sitting on an anthill, then stood up. He was covered in ants, and was horrified.
If you are looking for a concise biography of John F. Kennedy, then Jack: The Early Years of John F. Kennedy is a must read for you. It is a great introduction into JFK’s life if you are looking into researching him. I highly recommend this book.

insightful and interesting
By A. Hackworth
This look at JFK's early years is very amazing. I loved the idea of exploring his early years in depth. As a school teacher, I realized that so many of the students we see as average students or pranksters have great potential! The book shows JFK's relationship with his older brother as being very strained. I didn't realize they were so competitive, but this book points out how competitive they really were. I loved this book! If you are a fan of the Kennedys and are looking for a glimpse into the young life of JFK, this book is the one.

From Publishers Weekly
Out of curiosity, and because she was bored with her middle-class life and job, French, at 27, became a prostitute. Here, with the aid of Lee ( One by One , etc.), she reviews her career and describes clients she served in Atlanta and abroad, including a period in Puerto Rican brothels. Her activities, recounted in explicit, sordid and occasionally humorous detail, provided her with independence and affluence. Now a political activist on behalf of prostitutes' rights, and a prominent figure on talk shows and at hookers' conventions, French also works as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and the National Task Force on Prostitution.

Probably the best PR for consensual adult prostitution
By bikinibiker@hotmail.com
Amongs the best real-life accounts of the consensual adult prostitution business I have read next to the excellent Sydney Biddle Barrows, 'Mayflower Madam'.
Delores French is an 'ordinary woman' with a zest for life, who chooses an extraordinary lifestyle.
She's a women who enjoys her job: entertaining men in numerous ways..from the conversational to the carnal.
Independent, gutsy, quick-witted and terribly sensible;
Ms. French also has a killer sense of humour.
She has been a professional prostitute in the USA and several other countries.
Because she is a bit of an inquisitive, bright-spark she takes the opportunity to explore all levels of the job...from high class courtesan to street walker.
When she susses out the workings of a scene she moves on to pastures green and adapts to her new surroundings.
Rivetting, amazing, shocking ...but highly educational too.
I learnt a hell of a lot from Dolores- THANK YOU BIG-TIME GIRL!
If you are not a prostitute you need to read it to get an insight into what men 'really' want; if you are a prostitute you need to read it to discover how to be a better one.
Written with clarity and detail.
Absolutely fabulous.
Will always, always, always be on my bookshelf.

An interesting read, not your average prostitute...
By A Customer
Dolores is an exceptional woman in that as a prostitute she decides to experience every facet and level of the work. She starts out from the ripe age of 27 (most girls would consider retiring at that age) to begin escorting then working in a brothel and also trying street walking. She's quite brave (and crazy) but I don't understand why she would want to experience street walking when escorting is so much safer. Like I said, she is not your average working girl.

Interesting and insightful
By Andrea N.
Whether you have an opinion or not about prostitution , I think it's a good idea to read this book. By reading Dolores' book I can tell she is intelligent and well educated and she tells a very interesting story about her life as a prostitute without trying to convince the reader of what is *right* or *wrong*. She eventually became one of the most recognized prostitutes in America at one point. She fought for women's rights and appeared on television shows. It's interesting to learn of the different types of *clients* she came across in different countries, as well as other hookers, and how she handled certain dangerous situations. I've learned that prostitutes aren't that different from a lot of women, they aren't just dirty, AIDS infected low life people. Many of them really do like their jobs and feel they are helping people. This is a great book, I think every woman should read it.

Father of Wylie, husband of Sister and Belle
By Mary E. Sibley
At his best John O'Hara was amiable, warm, relaxed, and gay. He never preened. His friends included J. Robert Oppenheimer, but most of his friends in Princeton were not intellectuals.
The biographer claims that O'Hara's best writing went into his fiction. He had no Puritan inhibitions to treating himself to what he wanted. His appetite for things represented his appetite for life.
By his fifties, ten or fifteen short stories put O'Hara in the position of being one of the most memorable and most skillful writers of short stories. During Princeton winters and Quogue summers he came to live a conventional life.
In 1963 he was featured on the cover of NEWSWEEK. His work did not evoke enthusiasm in the intellectual community. Prizes and honors he sought were never granted. The American Academy of Arts and Letters did give him a prize in 1964, an Award of Merit for the Novel.
O'Hara said he was fascinated by the rich and how they live. For O'Hara writing was a compulsive occupation. He died in 1970 at age sixty five. Psychologically John O'Hara never left the small mining town of Pottsville, Pennsylvania.
O'Hara worked at the NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE in 1928. In the 1920's and 1930's newspaper journalism was an unusually social occupation. Speakeasies helped lower class barriers and eliminated the professional isolation that is common today.
He was fired from the HERALD TRIBUNE. He had talent, but he was misplaced on the paper. Next he worked for TIME. John departed from TIME. Journalists were migratory. His first piece for THE NEW YORKER appeared in May of 1928.
O'Hara's first marriage unwound around 1933. He moved to Pittsburgh, but left four months later to return to New York. Dorothy Parker was helpful. She nagged him to work.
He was writing APPOINTMENT IN SAMARRA. O'Hara's second novel, BUTTERFIELD 8, sold well but its critical reception disappointed him. In 1936 O'Hara stayed with Dorothy Parker and her husband in Hollywood. In California he met the woman who was to become his second wife, Belle Wylie. They married in 1937 in Elkton, Maryland.
PAL JOEY'S success on Broadway made O'Hara a celebrity. O'Hara was insecure and self-absorbed. O'Hara's wife Belle died in 1953 when his daughter Wylie was only eight. His third wife was Katharine Barnes Bryan, nicknamed Sister. He married her in 1955.

Oh Rats! the Story of Rats and People, by Albert Marrin

Able to claw straight up a brick wall, squeeze through a pipe the width of a quarter, and gnaw through iron and concrete, rats are also revealed in this fascinating book to be incredibly intelligent and capable of great compassion. Weaving science, history, culture, and folklore, awardwinning writer Albert Marrin offers a look at rats that goes from curious to repulsive, horrifying to comic, fearsome to inspiring. Arresting blackand- white scratchboard illustrations with bold red accents add visual punch to this study of a creature that has annoyed, disgusted, nourished, and intrigued its human neighbors throughout the centuries.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 4-6–Rats and humans have had a very long love/hate relationship as readers discover in this lively and informative overview of the history and behavior of the widely encountered rodent. Emphasizing the animal's capabilities for survival, Marrin offers both anecdotal accounts of human/rat encounters and impressive statistics. Rats have occupied the Earth far longer than humans, and they compete prodigiously for the world's food supply, earning their reputation as major pests to humankind. On the other hand, they provide an important source of protein for the many humans who eat them worldwide. (Not a pleasing bit of information for readers who have loved them as pets.) The nine short chapters are set in a handsome slim book with striking black-and-white scratchboard illustrations and muted red framing on many pages. Marrin touches briefly on physical characteristics as he explains the veneration of rats in some cultures, attempts to eradicate them in others, and rats as both carriers of disease and valued subjects of medical research. It's a different sort of discussion and format for this well-known historian and biographer and one that he has clearly enjoyed, as will a wide variety of nonfiction readers and animal fans. There's a bibliography of adult sources and children's nonfiction as well as a listing of literary works featuring rats.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Children fond of nonfiction that is laced with discomfiting--or downright revolting--information will happily fall upon this anecdotal look at the shared history of the animal kingdom's greatest survivors. Along with portraying rats in many roles, from pests to pets, Marrin (best known for his histories for older readers) introduces rodent relatives and provides glimpses of rats' habits and innate intelligence, as well as their history as disease carriers, lab animals, predators, and ("Grilled Rat, Bordeaux Style," anyone?) even entrees. Red highlights (including red eyes on the rats and red borders on some of the pages) add an ominous tone to Mordan's many naturalistic, deeply shadowed illustrations, which have the look of wood engravings. Although there are no source notes, Marrin closes with short lists of relevant fiction and nonfiction. Richard Conniff's Rats! The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (2002) offers sometimes-arresting photographs and more specific information, but this book makes a pleasantly icky additional purchase. John Peters

Rat a tat tat tat
By E. R. Bird
I thought I knew a lot about rats. I did. After having read Robert Sullivan's book for adults, "Rats: Observations on the History and Habitat of the City's Most Unwanted Inhabitants", I found myself under the distinct impression that Sullivan had told me everything about rats that there was to know. Imagine my shock then when, upon picking up Albert Marrin's, "Oh, Rats!: The Story of Rats and People", I discovered fact after fact after fact that I didn't know at all. Did you know that there was once a prehistoric rat that was seven feet long 17 million years ago? Or that a rat can collapse its skeleton so as to fit into tight places? Marrin doesn't just look at rats. He examines their bad and good (they have some) qualities in such a way that his book comes across as the foremost children's literature authority on the critters proper. Stir in C.B. Mordan's woodcut-like illustrations and you have yourself one heckuva book. One that will have even its adult readers alternately aghast and entranced.

Rats. You know 'em. You hate 'em. But no matter what your thoughts on these large rodentia, you've never seen them like this. In scintillating detail, Albert Marrin tracks the rat/human progress and how one species has helped or hurt (usually hurt) the other over the course of our evolution. From their ancestors to how they've killed us with plague, eaten our food, or been eaten by us (yum!) we see rats in every form and face. We view them as caring family members and fast breeders. Anything and everything a kid may ever want to know about rats is here, and its hard to look away from what Marrin is displaying before our eyes (no matter how much you may want to).

As to their intelligence, Marrin spares no detail. Some rats have learned to "fish" by dangling their worm-like tails in the water and then pouncing on the interested fishies. Time after time Marrin was surprising me with what he knew. Listen to this: "Sometimes able-bodied rats lead blind rats. They do this by allowing the blind rat to hold on to the tail of another or by holding one end of a stick in its mouth". I was happy to see that in the course of Marrin's rat history he included some information on lab rat testing. It's an evenhanded account, offering both sides of the debate and giving kids the chance to decide whether or not they think it's useful or uselessly cruel.

The design of the book is incredibly impressive as well. First of all, you have C.B. Mordan's pictures dotting every page, so well done there. Then, at the same time, the pages are broken up in various boxes. The only colors in this book are black, white, and a deep scarlet. Scarlet boxes move from page to page offering sidenotes of equal or surpassing interest to the text itself. Sometimes the book will open up onto a full-page picture of rats balancing on telephone wires or led by a Pied Piper to their doom. And on occasion Marrin seems to run out of strictly rat-related factoids so he may, for example, complement a passage on rat-eating with a list of other peculiar foods people will eat. You'll find "blue jay stomachs" and "flies in honey sauce" amongst others.

I kept marking the interesting passages so that I'd remember them when I wrote this review. Then, when it came time to review this book, I found myself overwhelmed by the number of interesting facts I'd marked. A single pair of rats can have 359 million descendants in three years! Isn't that wild? Or that a "rat king" is when a bunch of rats are stuck together by their tails. Or that rats lived with cavemen. It's true! And they cripple elephants in zoos (I'll spare you how). Or that, "the U.S. Department of Agriculture sets standards for the amount of rodent hairs and feces allowed in food such as peanut butter". I feel badly not telling you about every single interesting passage I marked up, but you may as well read the book as listen to me. Let's just say there were at least ten other passages marked in my copy of "Oh, Rats!" that I'm bitterly regretting not recounting them here.

The Bibliography in the back was especially interesting. Not only was there a proper listing of all rat-related nonfiction (both for children and adults) but also a list of suggested reading. Here you will find books on rat care, rats in literature, classic children's books like "Charlotte's Web" that contain rats, and a "More Books To Enjoy" section that contains rat characters of every stripe. From "Gregor the Overlander" to "Redwall", the best-known rats are here for kids to read up on. An excellent idea for a Bibliography all around. With all this citing from a factual bonanza it seems odd that Marrin would relate that the "Ring Around the Rosy" poem is definitely about the plague. There is no hard and fast evidence to support this and many claim to have debunked the theory in the past. It's a fun idea, but no one has ever come up with a clear cut Middle English recounting of the poem. Marrin does not mention this.

Still, for the most part, "Oh, Rats!" is just purely factual fun. A non-fiction title that kids can enjoy, parents can enjoy, and anyone who's ever wondered about rodentia proper can appreciate. Even people like myself who thought they knew all there was to know about the nasty critters will find themselves time and time again shocked and delighted by all the facts Marrin was able to relate. Kid-friendly, very pleasant on the eye, and just a delight through and through. A top notch presentation from a top notch author/illustrator team.

Oh Rats! At least the illustrations are good. . .
By L. Peirce-Dougherty
Although the illustrations are quite nice, the text is extremely anecdotal and should not be taken seriously. Rat shows are not referred to as "Pageants for Pretty Rats" - that phrase is actually part of the title of a Wall Street Journal article discussing domestic rodents (not listed in the 'bibliography' BTW). The author also loosely refers to multiple species as 'rats' which is very confusing. Norway rats, black rats, Gambian rats, and kiore are all lumped together for most of the book, even though the animals are very different.

The author also missed many wonderful opportunities. For example, on page 20, he discusses rats as pests in the White House, and Teddy Roosevelt leading rat hunts in the dining room. However, a true scholar of rats would have known that Teddy Roosevelt and his children actually kept multiple pet rats, and a black and white hooded rat named 'Jonathan' was a particular favourite - in the White House dining room.

Not really approprite for kids who need to learn real information about rodents, not tall tales disgused as facts. But the illustrations will satisfy any adult rat-o-phile!

Amazon.com Review
The Secret Language of Relationships adopts the format of its bestselling predecessor, The Secret Language of Birthdays, and the compendious collection of combinations that follows proves the book's assertion that "A relationship is a rather mysterious and amazing third entity, one that can come to lead an existence independent of the will or desire of its two partners.... in certain cases a relationship can prove far stronger than either individual, leading us to believe that a certain kind of synergy is at work."

Well-organized, packed with fascinating "personality" information, and replete with snapshots (on every page) of famous couples--whether colleagues, spouses, or lovers--The Secret Language of Relationships is also simple to use. A glance at the two-page chart at the beginning of the book determines your birthday "period." Next, find the period of the person who interests you--friend, parent, child, lover, or mate. The ensuing relationship dynamics are named colorfully and aptly: "Peas in a Pod," "Uncommon Intimacy," "Flexible Structures," "Few Dull Moments," and "Few Antipathies."

Describing 1,176 possibilities, The Secret Language of Relationships sheds light on the classic questions--the hows and whys of chemistry in relationships. Is there a prime ingredient for love at first sight, a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers of it all? An entertaining exploration of the very thing we cannot do without--each other--this wonderful volume explains why we feel the way we do about the people in our lives, and how--if necessary--to make it better.

Entertaining, but Definitely not Spiritual
By Regina McMenamin
THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF RELATIONSHIPS is a follow up to author Gary Goldschneider's earlier book about the study of people based upon the day they were born, rather than their astrological sign.

Wildly entertaining and surprisingly accurate, this book is used by cross-referencing two birthdays on the charts provided on the inside covers. At the point where these two birthdays meet, you are given a page number where you will find a profile about the relationship between the two people, regardless of whether that relationship is based on friendship, romance, family or business.

These profiles are a half of a page long; include a brief synopsis of the relationship, advice and nutshell facts about strengths and weaknesses.

Despite the fact that I am skeptical by nature and put little if any stock in astrology, I found this book fun. What's more, I was very surprised to cross reference couples I know, colleagues I've worked with, etc and found that these relationships are perfectly described in this book.

I am surprised to read some of the reviews here that reveal customer dissatisfaction with this book. I never expected to learn anything spiritual or mystical here. And though I am not exactly surprised that some are saddened to learn that there are potential challenges in their own relationships, I suspect that these reviewers cross referenced themselves with their spouses and were horrified to read they'd be better off friends or business associates.

Still I recommend THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF BIRTHDAYS for those looking exclusively for mindless entertainment for themselves or for their friends who visit and find it in a bookshelf.

insanely insightful!!!
By Maya León
I must give this book an absolutely wonderful review. It has helped me to understand things about myself and my relationships with other people that has really helped me to change myself and therefore my to change my relationships for all the better. This particular book by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers gives insight on all relationship combinations throughout the year, giving the weaknesses, strenghts and everything in between in the realtionship. The only reason this or any other astrology/personology book would ever not make sense to anyone, is because of the failure to recognize qualities within yourself, others, or your relationships. So, if something you read in this book or any other for that matter, doesn't seem at all like what you percieve in your reality, take a step back from the situation and look at it with a broader perspective. There were many things that I realized to be true about myself and my relationships after reading this book. It's truly incredible. I love it! I reffer back to it all the time and I can't wait to buy the other books by Goldschneider and Elffers about Destiny and Birthdays. I hope that all of you out there will give these books a chance! They are simply wonderful!

The Self Is Only A Function Of Its Relationship To Another
By Steven Menzer
The genius of this book is its balance between the specific and the general. The authors take the days of the year and group them together into periods of between 6 to 9 days. Though this would seem arbitrary, it merely takes the same logic of the 12 traditional sun signs of astrology, and resolves them to a higher resolution from which more complex meanings can be gleaned. So rather than merely describe the twelve sun sign interactions with each each other (144 relationships), this book decribes 48 specific periods each of which has a relationship with all the other periods (1,176 relationships). In each of the 1,176 half-page vignettes, the authors have a startling ability to evoke the flavors and forces at play between any two of the 48 periods.

Despite this immense specificity, the book is still general enough that any person can understand the 48 relationships - relative to their own period, at an intuitive level so that upon learning another person's birthday, they can immediately triangulate the psychic territory that is formed by the perspective at which their two personalities will view and interact with each other. Without needing to know the time or place of birth, let alone the year - which many people are reluctant to reveal, the month and date alone will allow you to ascertain the tensions and blind spots, as well as the harmonies and affinities that are likely to shape the dynamic of your interactions with the other person.

Aside from the phrase used to name each relationship, the book also provides keywords to describe three strengths and three weaknesses. These are useful for summing up very briefly the essence of the relationship. Although some may find it useful, I would not heed too seriously the authors suggestion that each of the relationships make a best and worst fit when it comes to love, marriage, friendship, family or work. Astrology books tend not to have much of any concensus about recommendations for love, work or family relations. In my opinion, astrology is helpful as an aid to understanding individuals and the relationships formed between them, but not as a basis for deciding what type of a relationship to have with them.

Nevertheless, this book's vast breadth, and deep insight, is an amazing achievement that will raise the eyebrows of even the most adamant astrological skeptics. It will help you see that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It's not so much about yourself or the self of the other, but rather the space that is created between.

My Favorite Cross-Stitch Book!
By Jaina Solo
These designs are adorable, like others have said, but I had to add--this is not just a same ol' Peter Rabbit / Pooh Bear book. As a new mom, I was a bit tired of finding baby designs for the nursery in nothing but Peter and Pooh. Nothing against these characters, mind you, but I wanted something a little . . . different. Well, I've had great success with this book! I had heard of Duck, but really wasn't too familiar with him--but he and his pals are adorable. Ditto for the "Apple Tree Farm" section (which you can do as a sampler or separate designs). Very Britishy, and perfect for an anglophile like me! Made me a big fan of the illustrator (Stephen Cartwright). Also, this book has a section on Miffy! Wow! You don't find that just anywhere. I, too, wish Gillian Souter would do a sequel to this great book! I'd like to see Little Critter, Wild Things, Lilly (of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse), and some Rosemary Wells characters. One last note. The designs here are very well done--the transfer of an illustration to the cross-stitch format is very smooth, and my completed designs were very much like the actual illustrations! A nice addition is the alphabet patterns in the back for you to personalize your designs. They're a good couple of fonts which I've used repeatedly.

Wonderful patterns for the child at heart
By A Customer
I bought this book especially for the Classic Pooh patterns I couldn't seem to find anywhere. However, every pattern in here is adorable and the ones I completed charm me still every time I look at them. I would recommend this for anyone who enjoys children's patterns, or wants to give an adorable gift to someone.

Dangerous Crossing: The Revolutionary Voyage of John Quincy Adams, by Stephen Krensky

In February 1778, at the height of the Revolutionary War, the American representative from Massachusetts, John Adams, is sent on a secret mission to France. It is dangerous to cross the Atlantic in winter, but the situation is desperate-the colonies need France's help against the British army. Adams is accompanied by his ten-year-old son, Johnny. Together, father and son must weather an angry ocean, perilous sea battles, and other dangers to help the colonies achieve freedom.
Vivid illustrations and a fast-paced narrative bring to life this little-told story of a character-defining event in the lives of two future presidents.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 - During the winter of 1778, while the colonies were still at war with England, John Adams and his 10-year-old son made an uncomfortable transatlantic crossing on the Boston in an effort to enlist French support for the struggling American cause. Fears and predictions of danger materialized in the form of encounters with British ships and a huge storm. Although Johnny is the cameo character, it is through many of John Adams's own thoughts as revealed through his actual diary that readers get a glimpse of the threats and hardships endured during their voyage. While Johnny's experience can stand alone as an adventure story, having at least a rudimentary familiarity with the American Revolution would enhance children's appreciation for why the boy and his father were taking such risks. Some of the vocabulary, particularly passages from Adams's diary, may require adult help, but for the most part, the text is fairly easy, and the map and watercolor illustrations support it well. The masterful watercolor paintings not only depict the action but also show period clothing and nautical surroundings from many interesting perspectives. This is engaging historical fiction with illustrations that truly bring the story to life. Pair it with Jan Cheripko's Caesar Rodney's Ride (Boyds Mills, 2004) to explore travel during colonial times as well as the self-sacrifice and bravery of America's founders. - Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, Waterford, NJ

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. In 1778, 10-year-old John Quincy Adams and his father, John Adams, crossed the Atlantic on the frigate Boston. Based on the elder Adams' diary, the episodic story includes everything from storms and the threat of battle to seasickness. John observes a Portuguese man-of-war hauled up from the sea in a bucket and endless days of "Nothing but Sky, Clouds, and Sea." Finally, the Adams reach the French coast. Harlin's richly atmospheric paintings dramatize scene after scene with subtle hues and lighting effects as well as a sure sense of composition that articulates quiet moments and perilous ones with equal conviction. Written in third person, except for the occasional quote from the actual diary, the story offers a stirring account of life aboard ship, spiced with details from the voyage. An appended author's note comments on the story's source and the illustrious careers of the two Adamses. Carolyn Phelan

About the Author
"I did not have the kind of childhood most people would choose to write about. It was happy and uneventful, with only the occasional bump in the night to keep me on my toes. In my spare time, however, I often imagined myself in various stories -- as Mighty Mouse, Robin Hood, Popeye or Superman.

"I always liked to make up stories, especially lying in bed at night before I fell asleep.

"It was not until I was twenty that I actually took up ceative writing. One of my favorite parts of the process was imagining myself in various characters' shoes, even if those characters - dragons for example - didn't wear shoes at all. A year later, in 1975, I graduated from Hamilton College andbegan a six-month internship at the New York Times Book Review.

"Since then I have been a full-time writer for children. I married my wife, Joan, in 1984,and we settled in my hometown of Lexington, Massachusetts, where we live with our two sons, Andrew and Peter.

"When I feel like I've spent enough time hunched over my computer, I like to play soccer and softball, and read books written by other people."

Quick, Entertaining History for Kids
By FanB14
Young John Quincy Adams accompanies his father to Europe to elicit support for the American Revolution. Brief retelling of the journey on the frigate, Boston and the rough journey. Good read for school and excellent price for a hardback with no markings.

From Publishers Weekly
The heroine first seen in A Room Made of Windows comes of age in this fifth book about her life. Julia, now 15, comes to terms with her father's death by writing about him, which in turn contributes further to the healing process. She wins the lead in her high school production of Romeo and Juliet, and experiences the exhilaration of dramatic performance. Julia even falls in love for the first time and, most importantly, matures in her understanding of those around her: her mother, the stepfather she has never accepted and her beloved yet fallible Uncle Hugh. Julia is an exceptionally sensitive, reflective character, and this novel embodies the culmination and fulfillment of those qualities. Julia's first love relationship is somewhat sketchily and idealistically renderednot entirely believable. But this is a finely realized exploration of the turbulence and headiness of adolescence and of the challenges and rewards of creative expression. Ages 11-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-9 Julia Redfern makes her fifth appearance in this sequel to her introduction in A Room Made of Windows (Little, 1971). On the verge of 15 as the story opens, Julia is secure in her accomplishments as a writer and is also exploring her talents as an actress. Now a mature, observant, multi-faceted character, she finds that her perceptions and relationships grow more complex as she does. Julia comes to terms with her father's death, her stepfather, the frailties of her beloved Uncle Hugh, her first love, and the death of her friend Rhiannon in this novel of growth and understanding set in post-World War I Berkeley, California. Cameron effectively creates the atmosphere of a time long past, yet evokes a genuine immediacy in Julia's emotions and an authenticity in her voice that contemporary readers will recognize. Events parallel experiences today's readers facerivalry, infatuation, failure, and success, and they unfold in a believable manner that builds to an unrealistically swift crescendo of climax, out of step with the thoughtful pace of the earlier chapters. Characterization is smooth and vivid in even the most minor players, although the behavior of Rhiannon's unpleasant sister Lydia seems somewhat outrageous, particularly when directed at a child. Despite these quibbles, fans of Julia, and newcomers as well, will welcome this addition. Although the book stands well on its own, readers' enjoyment will be enhanced with the experience of the previous titles. Starr LaTronica, North Berkeley Library, Calif.

One of the best books in the world!
By A Customer
This book, one of the last written by Eleanor Cameron before her death, is arguably her best. She's an extremely talented writer infusing her books with a wonderful reality and subtlety that make them hard to forget. While her Mushroom Planet books are the most acclaimed, her Julia Redfern series, especially A Room Made of Windows and The Private Worlds of Julia Redfern are examples of her strongest writing. She has been compared to Virginia Woolf stylistically, but is, in my opion, a much clearer writer. An especially wonderful book for any aspiring writers.
