Forsaken
By Kurt L. Olney
We left South Vietnam in 1972. We left with promises we never kept to the South Vietnamese. The Russians resupplied the NVA and the NVA conquered the South in traditional military style in violation of the Paris Peace Accords. Ngan story of how his life and family were destroyed by the North Vietnamese Communist take over will make your heart break.

Worth my reading time!
By Bac Nguyen
I still wonder why this book was never written in Vietnamese. The story of Mr. Ngan is quiet intriguing and lots of other vietnamese refugees can relate to his escape to freedom. I am personally touched by his account because I attended the high school he mentioned in the book and also that he used to work where my father also was employed. The writing is sincere and fascinating. I highly recommend to those who are curious about what happened to the vanquished after the fall of South Vietnam. The miseries they went through would be material for any excellent non-fictions. I admire the courage the author displayed and feel very sorry for the loss of his wife and kid.

From Publishers Weekly
Hoguet (I Unpacked My Grandmother's Trunk has taken the familiar nursery rhyme about Solomon Grundy and turned it into an American saga of one family's beginnings in the new world. Solomon Grundy, "born on Sunday" in 1836 to British immigrants, grows up in a Connecticut farmhouse, where his parents have planted apple saplings they brought from England. He grows up, marries and has six children; then he starts baking and selling pies made from the apples in the orchard. The bakery business expands, and over the years he prospers, then dies, leaving the shops in his children's hands. Headlines and dates on newspapers give Solomon's life a historical time and place, yet Hoguet hasn't added one word to the original rhyme. Instead, her rich, bustling scenes in watercolor show us Solomon's family, as its members gather apples at harvest time, open yet another bakery, and mourn his passing. The book is a spirited chronicle of the milestones in a person's life, and in a young country's growth.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3 The only text in the main body of Solomon Grundy consists of the lines of the nursery verse; they appear as captions to 8 of the 25 full- or double-page watercolor illustrations. The principal events in the life of Hoguet's Master Grundy occur, as they should, on successive days of the week,X but over a span of 74 years. Her picture story opens with the emigration of a young couple from England to America. They welcome their son Solomon's arrival on July 4, 1836. Succeeding vignettes follow Solomon's progress from boyhood to marriage, to the growth of his bakery business and family, old age and death. Clues in the naive paintings tie the lives of the Grundy family to changing times and historical events. A page of notes at the end puts each picture into the context of its times. While the factual content of the illustrations will have little meaning to a nursery verse audience, the child-oriented activities they reflect have appeal. Janet D. Horrible book for children
By Knitty
I wish I could give this zero stars. I found this book at the library. I beg to differ with the publisher's review. I thought it was just dreadful: Solomon Grundy on Thursday, lying in bed with red spots all over his face. On Friday, his face is colored green, and unhappy people fill his room. It ends with his tombstone, R.I.P. Just awful. I cannot imagine reading this to a child.

My "baby's" favorite book.
By sandy
Twenty-one years ago this book somehow came into my possession and it was my baby's favorite book. I read it to her until it was ragged. And as she grew, I continued to read to her constantly. She became a voracious reader. Consequently, when I became a grandmother this was the first book I purchased for my granddaughter. I hope she likes it as much as her mom!

Very nice book
By JPP
It is a book full of nursery rhymes and it is very nicely illustrated. My son loves when I read him from this book and he looks at the pictures. However, I do not think it's best for babies since it's illustrated in pastel colors and as far as I know babies have hard time seeing these colors. I think it's a great book for toddlers though.

Science Fair Success Secrets: How to Win Prizes, Have Fun, and Think Like a Scientist, by Bill Haduch

This book is for anyone who wants to excel at a school science fair. It gives complete guidance for every stage of a successful project, from brainstorming ideas to final presentation. More than a "recipe-style" science fair book, this work promotes the understanding of real science.

Twenty prizewinning projects from top national competitions are included:
€ How to make the best chocolate-chip cookies-scientifically!
€ Do lefties have slower reaction times than right-handers?
€ Does grass grow faster if you cut it short? And more!

Kids will love the hip, engaging text, filled with fascinating trivia and wacky science jokes, as well as the very funny illustrations. Solid science presented in a compelling manner makes this a stellar addition to the category.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Students who are apprehensive about doing a science-fair project will find this book friendly and accessible. Those unfamiliar with the scientific method will also find clear and cogent explanations here. Emphasis is placed on thinking like a scientist, using one's natural curiosity about the world, and creating good scientific inquiry. The text is light, informative, and engaging. After introductory chapters about conceiving projects, conducting experiments and observations, note taking, write up, and displays, a number of sample projects that have won regional or state awards are presented. Several more advanced projects are included "so you can see that high school projects are not that different from the ones done in grade school." A concluding list of 101 titles of award winners should give readers some ideas for projects of their own. Pen-and-ink cartoons are clear and echo the tone of the book. Boxed information about where ideas came from and some "stupid science questions" add accessibility to this lively book.

From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. In this lively book, Haduch offers an excellent introduction to science fairs. After noting that a well-designed project gives the student a taste of actually doing science, he explains what the scientific method means in practical terms that will be useful to middle-schoolers. In other words, he doesn't start off by discussing the concept of a hypothesis; rather, he encourages a process of curious inquiry leading to questions that can be usefully addressed by a science fair experiment. In the largest section of the book, "Real Projects That Rocked the World," 20 award-winning science experiments are clearly presented in terms of the genesis of the ideas, the questions addressed, hypotheses, procedures, and "real world" implications. The book ends with a list of 101 award-winning project ideas, a bibliography, and metric conversion tables. The often jaunty tone of the text and the cartoon-style drawings make this an unusually appealing book on the topic, while the respect for science and the solid presentation make it a highly useful book as well. It's About Time!
By A Customer
Finally - a book on science experiments that follows the scientic method for a traditional science fair. This is an excellent resource for any teacher (or student) involved in a science project that uses the scientific process. This book offers 20 engaging project ideas in a very user friendly format. Each project page shares the following:
1. The project title
2. The problem in the form of a question
3. An example hypothesis
4. A list of steps to follow for the procedure
5. Conclusion statement
6. How the information can be used for real world application
Although this is a great read for students, it can also be a great place for teachers to spark ideas within their students (without necessarily sharing the book with them).

Great book about the science behind the science fair
By Amazon Customer
I first checked this book out from the library, but then had to come to Amazon and buy it when I saw how great it was. It really helped my daughter think through her project this year; it is a reference I will want to have around the house as my other children get old enough to do their own science fair projects.

This fantastic book is humorous and fun, but at the same time it helps the student and the student's parent understand the place of science in the science fair. I appreciated the many real-life examples (often award winners) of students who came up with projects based on real life questions or problems they had.

The book demonstrates how to use scientific thinking to turn a real life question into a real life project. This book may not be as strong on practical tips for how to make an arresting science fair display, but it is very strong on how to come up with your own unique project and think scientifically about it. Every student spending time preparing for the fair ought to read this book.

The Best Science Fair Book Ever!
By L. Sainsbury
This is by far the best science fair book you could ever hope to find. It's not a list of science fair projects; it's a primer on how to do science. (The last part of the book, however, does have several winning projects highlighted.)
It starts off with having your kid ask him/herself just what interests them. What are they curious about? From there it goes through the process needed to satisfy that curiousity while at the same time turning it into a science fair project.
There are sections on requirements like building a hypothesis, getting references, etc. as well as emphasis on controls and variables. It stresses the importance of not just doing the science, but communicating what the student has learned from the process. It's all written in a very kid-friendly style, that's fun to read as an adult as well.
I bought two copies: one for me and one for my son's science teacher.

The Grimm Conclusion (A Tale Dark & Grimm), by Adam Gidwitz

Once upon a time, fairy tales were grim.

Cinderella’s stepsisters got their eyes pecked out by birds.

Rumpelstiltskin ripped himself in half.

And in a tale called “The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage,” a mouse, a bird, and a sausage all talk to each other. Yes, the sausage talks. (Okay, I guess that one’s not that grim…)

Those are the real fairy tales.

But they have nothing on the story I’m about to tell.

This is the darkest fairy tale of all. Also, it is the weirdest. And the bloodiest.

It is the grimmest tale I have ever heard.

And I am sharing it with you.

Two children venture through forests, flee kingdoms, face ogres and demons and monsters, and, ultimately, find their way home. Oh yes, and they may die. Just once or twice.

That’s right. Fairy tales
Are
Awesome.

From Booklist
In this final entry in Gidwitz’s trilogy, the author once again mashes together unsugarcoated versions of classic fairy tales. Twins Jorinda and Joringel suffer gruesome fates at the hands of their stepfather—naturally—but that’s only the beginning. Once they dispatch him, they stumble into other well-known fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, as well as some less familiar stories, like The Juniper Tree. The metafictional approach can get distracting; along with regular interactions with the reader, Gidwitz eventually shares a pizza with, and reads his previous two novels to, Jorinda and Joringel. But interested readers won’t be there for the narrative structure. No, they’ll show up for the awesomely dark stories, full of beheadings, corpses, tyrants, murder, and terrible adults who treat children awfully until those children are empowered to fight back, taking the narrative power into their own hands to tell the stories with the happy endings they want to hear. Fans of the series will eagerly pore over this volume, which can comfortably stand on its own. Grades 4-7. --Sarah Hunter

It grows on you...
By Ulyyf
I wasn't especially impressed when I first saw this book. A is for apple, B is for balloon, C is for cow, basic stuff. The only thing interesting was "X marks the spot" instead of "X is for X-ray or Xylophone".

Then I realized that I'd seen many of the creatures in Z is for zoo earlier in the book.

So I re-read it. Several re-reads later, I realized that there was a tentative story in this book. Do the women and the man love each other? They write letters. Hearts are a periodic motif. The woman paints, the man explores. Do they miss each other?

So maybe a toddler won't understand that. But this is an alphabet book they'll read past toddlerhood.

Wonderful book
By Rhino king
This is a wonderful book for babies up to preschool. The pictures are simple at first, but the harder you look the more you see. My two year old enjoys shouting out everything she sees in the pictures. It is fun for us as parents to read as well. We try to find everything with that letter. It is kind of like a Where's Waldo for little ones.

Makes the Alphabet Exciting for Children and Adults Alike
By F. Hamilton
I recently discovered _A B C: A Child's First Alphabet Book_ by Alison Jay. What a delight! Each letter of the alphabet is given a full page, if not a two-page spread. The text is very simple, following the "A is for apple" format. Both upper- and lowercase versions of the target letter are shown.

The art, however, is extraordinary! It usually occupies most of the page with the target object most prominent. The subtleties, though, are what give this book its whimsical charm: other objects on the page that begin with the same letter (they are all listed on the last page) and the recurrence of objects throughout the book. Nearly every page contains as a small, obscure detail the object that will be prominently featured with the next letter of the alphabet. Sometimes these are embedded secondary details -- in the pattern of a plate, for example, or on the cover of a book.

Jay's book contains all the seeds for the discovery and excitement that prompt a child to exclaim, "Look! That's just like . . ." and scurry back through the pages, searching for the remembered image. The suggestion of a story line is there, too, with an explorer, a map, and a treasure chest.

I am so grateful to have discovered Alison Jay (both author and illustrator). _A B C: A Child's First Alphabet Book_ is the first book I have bought for my first grandchild, due to be born next month.

About the Author
Alan Alexander Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882, the third and youngest son of a schoolmaster. At age eleven, he won a scholarship to the Westminster School. He went on toattend Cambridge University and became the editor of the undergraduate paper, Granta. After graduating from Cambridge in 1903, Milne moved back to London with enough savings to live for one year. He was determined to become a writer. By 1906, he had been offered theposition of Assistant Editor at Punch, a classic British humor magazine. He remained at Punch for the next eight years.

In 1913, Milne married Dorothy de Selincourt (known as Daphne) and moved to a house in London's Chelsea section. When World War I broke out, he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, eventually serving in France. During his training period, he wrote his first play, Wurzel-Flummery, which was produced in London in 1917.

By 1919, having completed one book and several plays, Milne finally achieved financial independence. His play, Mr. Pim Passes By, previously staged in London, was produced by theTheatre Guild in New York City. It was as great a success there as it had been on the London stage. Milne was now well established as a witty and fashionable London playwright. In 1920, Christopher Robin Milne was born, an event that was to change the history of children'sliterature. In 1923, during a rainy holiday in Wales, Milne began work on a collection of verses for children. The result was When We Were Very Young, published in 1924.

Demand for Milne's whimsical work was overwhelming, and in 1926, he duplicated his earlier success with the publication of Winnie-the-Pooh. The sequel, The House at Pooh Corner, followed in 1927. Now We Are Six, another charming collection of verse, followed one year later. It was through these four books, all illustrated by the wonderfully talented Ernest H. Shepard, that Milne acquired a vast audience outside of the theater. In the years since their initial publication, interest in these books has grown and grown.

Milne continued to be a prolific essayist, novelist, and poet until his death in 1956.

Ernest H. Shepard was born in 1879 in London. His father was an architect and his mother whodied when he was ten years old was the daughter of a notable watercolorist. It was she who firstencouraged young Ernest to paint and draw. Art became Ernest's passion, and after attendingHeatherly's Art School and the Royal Acadamy Schools, Shepard supported himself by drawingfor the illustrated papers and by illustrating books.

In 1903, Shepard married Florence Chaplin. Florence was a mural painter and fellow student atthe Academy. The Shepards had two children: Graham, who was killed in World War II, andMary, who later illustrated Mary L. Travers Mary Poppins books.

When World War I broke out, Shepard served in France, Belgium, and Italy, attaining the rank ofMajor. On his return to England, he continued with his art. He became a regular contributor toPunch, the classic British humor magazine, where he met A. A. Milne, a man who was to beinstrumental to his career. Shepard was elected to the editorial board of Punch, and shortlythereafter, he agreed to do the illustrations for Milne's first book of verse, When We Were VeryYoung.

The illustrations that Shepard created for all four of the Pooh books received worldwide acclaim. For the next thirty years, he continued to illustrate books for both adults and children. In 1973,for the first time, he added color to his drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh. Shepard ultimately donatedseveral hundred drawings to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

Oh Bother! The Best Winnie The Pooh!

This is the best version of Pooh. Not the contaminated Disney version by any means. This is the pure bear of little brain. This particular version is enhanced by full color paintings by Mr Shephard which will knock your socks off!

Great for kids and adults. Because it's *that* sort of book.
By A Customer
I first read Pooh as a child, when my days were spent doing Nothing. It was a good book then, which I really enjoyed.
But I don't do Nothing anymore. Well, not so much. They don't let you. Now my life more often resembles going around and around the tree looking vainly for Woozles, or going bump, bump, bump down the stairs, thinking that there must be a better way, if only I could stop bumping long enough to think of it. Reading Pooh is how I stop bumping.
I need to be reminded that spelling isn't everything - that there are some days when spelling Tuesday simply doesn't count.
Pooh and Piglet are wondering where you've been. Eeyore told them that you're not coming back. "They've forgotten," said Eeyore. "Typical," said Eeyore. "How Like Them," he said.
But you can come back, you know. You can find a Thoughtful Spot, or join an Expotition to find the North Pole, or drop stick off a bridge.
Because the Forest will always be there, and anyone who is Friendly with Bears can find it.

Portraits of African American Heroes, by Tonya Bolden

Here, ideal for African-American History Month, is a stunningly beautiful book consisting of portraits-in pictures and words-of twenty outstanding African-Americans. The individuals range from historical to contemporary figures, such as the dancer Judith Jamison, and represent diverse fields of endeavor, from the law (Supreme Court justice Thurgood Marshall) to athletics, science, and more. For each individual, there is a three-page biography by the noted author Tonya Bolden and a striking black-and-white portrait that captures not only the subject's likeness but is a work of art in itself. A book to inspire, to teach, or to display, with its large trim size and striking design, it is as handsome as it is important.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-8-While there is a wealth of information currently available to children about African-American historical figures, there is still a great deal of room for more biographies of contemporary African-American achievers. Bolden profiles 20 people, ranging from Matthew Henson, Thurgood Marshall, and Martin Luther King, Jr., to Paul Robeson, Ruth Simmons, Judith Jamison, and Charlayne Hunter-Gault. The sketches, as the author states in the introduction, are intended to capture something of the essence of these people. She succeeds by using lively language, anecdotal information, and quotations from the subjects themselves. The book is arranged chronologically, beginning with Frederick Douglass, born around 1818, and ending with Ben Carson, born in 1951. Each entry is accompanied by a striking, if somewhat glamorized, full-page portrait done in deep, rich shades of brown. A smaller painting of the subject appears on the final page of the profile. A lengthy list of suggested reading is appended. A fine addition to any library.

From Booklist
Gr. 3-5. Well known for her books on notable personalities, among them The Book of African American Women (1997), Bolden offers another winning collection of 20 biographical essays. From Dizzy Gillespie and W. E. B. Du Bois to Gwendolyn Brooks and Judith Jamison, the collection ranges from historical to contemporary figures who made their mark in fields as diverse as athletics, politics, science, and the arts. Each profile lists expected biographical information, but offers even more by way of keen insights into a subject's personality based on interviews and information drawn from personal memoirs. Readers get a sense of the childhood dreams of journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, for instance, when they learn that comic-strip ace Brenda Starr first stirred Hunter-Gault's desire to report the news. Pitcairn's beautifully rendered sepia-toned portraits make each subject jump from the page, beckoning children to come ever closer and learn. Source notes and a suggested reading list are appended. SHAMANS GIVEN THE VOICE OF PRINT !!!!!!
By jorma
This is a classic, A true voice of the shamans ! The entries, or Shamans given a voice of print here is greatly varied, time wise (Shamans may disagree here) and geographically. What I really love about this volume is that it produces what the title implies. The author does indeed let the Shamans have their say, accompanied by her more than able prose, this book is surely a sublime offering of wisdom and is true art!!!! From Crow Dog to Black Elk to Sereptie to Maria Sabina to Manuel Cordova-Rios to Isaac Tens to Prem Das to many others, if you can find a more varied source of true Indigenous Shamanic wisdom, Please let me know, because it would already be in my Cart !!!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!!!

One of the Best.
By Willhum
Books on shamanism tend to be quite a mixed bunch in terms of quality. Shamanic Voices though is one of the best and most authentic (steering well clear of the flakey "new age" type of shamanism). I would also recommend highly Wizard of the Upper Amazon or any book by Jeremy Narby. Joan Halifax has collected a variety of writtings in this book, my favorite of which is the artic shamans and also the slightly sad story of the aboriginal Australian shaman who lost his power. This is one of my favorite books and comes highly recommended!

The Real Deal
By Feral Puma
This book is for the serious apprentice, though it's possible casual readers might enjoy the stories as well. Those looking for new age fluff should pass on this text, until they can learn to appreciate hands-on techniques 'solitude & suffering to transcend' and other fun topics like that. I've read many books on shamanism over the years but this one is the one I'd prefer to keep with me in place of all the others. This and perhaps Shapeshifting by John Perkins.

Review
...this new offering from the ever-energetic Arnosky [is] full of wonders for children to discover. -- Kirkus, starred review

About the Author
Jim Arnosky is well known for his "keen observations of nature and his fine artistic talent" (School Library Journal). He has written and illustrated many children’s books. Otters Under Water was called "first-rate natural history for the youngest" by Kirkus Reviews (pointer review), and School Library Journal wrote that in it "each of his creatures exhibits a distinct individualism." Every Autumn Comes the Bear was called "vibrant, translucent and strikingly composed" by Publishers Weekly, and Booklist wrote "Arnosky's radiant pictures have a dazzling sense of pattern and composition . . . and a sense of mystery. A beautiful, imaginative, and informative approach." School Library Journal said of Rabbits & Raindrops, “Perfect for story-time or lap-time reading, this book will give children a feeling of security and contentment.”

Exceptional Informational Text
By Amy D.
The Brook Book: Exploring the Smallest Streams by Jack Arnosky is an excellent example of quality informational texts for children. The book is engaging and informative and would keep a child's attention as it is being explored. The cover is more engaging in person than it is in photographs on websites. The topic of the book may not be one that initially grabs a child's attention, but brooks and streams are common for many children and once the book is explored it would keep the attention of children as it builds on their prior knowledge and background experiences. There are some basic informational text structures including titles, headings and captions that help organize information, yet it does not have a table of contents, index or glossary. The headings lead to a clear division of information and the illustrations add to the content. They are clear and engaging without distracting the reader from the information contained on the pages.

This book would be an excellent resource when discussing habitats, the environment and documenting the physical world. The examples of how to sketch flowers, collect insect specimens and identify birds, animals and their tracks make this book a great introduction to these topics, a helpful field guide when taking trips to local brooks and a thorough resource for documenting information upon returning.

From Publishers Weekly
Liberally studded with anecdotes and morsels of little-known trivia, Jones's (The Believers) detailed accounts of assassination attempts on American presidents benefit from her insightful, accessible presentation. Going far beyond the facts as chronicled in standard history texts, the author delves into the lives and minds of the various assailants, probing their often warped reasoning and motives, revealing as well their devious plans and their fates after their arrests. For example, before he fatally shot James Garfield, Charles Guiteau checked out District of Columbia jail facilities just in case he landed there for awhile; he expected that Chester Arthur, Garfield's v-p, would be grateful for the promotion and would "rescue" him. Jones includes copious quotes from the victims and their families, including Garfield's courteous comment when his doctor, trying not to alarm his patient, said the chief executive's injury wasn't serious ("I thank you, Doctor, but I am a dead man"); and Jacqueline Kennedy's response to a suggestion that she change out of her clothes, stained with her late husband's blood ("Let them see what they've done"). Period drawings and photos, some of them highly dramatic, add to this volume's considerable appeal. Ages 8-13.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-9?Jones presents the often-tragic history of attacks on 10 U.S. presidents, 4 of which have been fatal. She describes each incident in a clear narrative style and in considerable detail, explaining the motivations of the assailant, the particulars of the attack, and the immediate and far-reaching effects of it. Some of the theories that have arisen about the Lincoln and Kennedy assassinations are put forth but no conclusions are drawn as to which ones are more accurate. The well-written text informs readers without resorting to sensationalism. The layout is attractive, with large margins and numerous black-and-white illustrations and photos. Edmund Lindop's Assassinations That Shook America (Watts, 1992) includes other political figures such as Huey Long and Martin Luther King, Jr., providing less detail about the attacks themselves and devoting more time to their consequences and the changes that followed them. Jones's book is sure to draw general readers as well as report writers.?Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Jones brings a lively approach to a serious and interesting topic. From Andrew Jackson to Ronald Reagan, she charts a chronological course through "four assassinations and the attempts on six of the other presidents' lives." She discusses the events leading to each attack and provides a detailed description of the incident and its consequences. Using a smooth style leavened with humor, she brings to life the personalities and places. Although conspiracy theories associated with each of the murders are presented, readers are given enough room to draw their own conclusions. Even students familiar with presidential history are likely to learn something from this highly readable account. Use it to bring a different--and riveting--spin to Presidents' Day commemorations. Black-and-white illustrations; research note. Julie Corsaro

Assassination Facts and a Gun-control Agenda!
By A Customer
Contrary to what you might infer from my rating, this book was pretty accurate and informative up to the Reagan assassination attempt-then the author started playing politics. In said attempt, a crazy guy (who already couldn't legally own a gun) in love with actress Jody Foster, empties a .22 caliber revolver at President Reagan, wounding him and nearly killing his Press Secretary, James Brady. At this point the author goes off on a tangent in which she idolizes Brady's wife Sarah, who has since made it her goal to disarm America, and uses quotes from Reagan's would-be assassin to support Mrs. Brady's gun-control bill. That the author mentioned "devastator" bullets, which she claims explode on impact (they don't exist in .22 caliber), suggests to me that she should perhaps educate herself further on the ageneda she promoted. To conclude, if I wanted a book promoting gun-control, I'd have bought one entitled like, "Guns: the Evil of Inanimate Objects", not "The President Has Been Shot". I am 14 years old and first read this book in 4th grade.
