The Grimm Conclusion (A Tale Dark & Grimm), by Adam Gidwitz

Once upon a time, fairy tales were grim.

Cinderella’s stepsisters got their eyes pecked out by birds.

Rumpelstiltskin ripped himself in half.

And in a tale called “The Mouse, the Bird, and the Sausage,” a mouse, a bird, and a sausage all talk to each other. Yes, the sausage talks. (Okay, I guess that one’s not that grim…)

Those are the real fairy tales.

But they have nothing on the story I’m about to tell.

This is the darkest fairy tale of all. Also, it is the weirdest. And the bloodiest.

It is the grimmest tale I have ever heard.

And I am sharing it with you.

Two children venture through forests, flee kingdoms, face ogres and demons and monsters, and, ultimately, find their way home. Oh yes, and they may die. Just once or twice.

That’s right. Fairy tales
Are
Awesome.

From Booklist
In this final entry in Gidwitz’s trilogy, the author once again mashes together unsugarcoated versions of classic fairy tales. Twins Jorinda and Joringel suffer gruesome fates at the hands of their stepfather—naturally—but that’s only the beginning. Once they dispatch him, they stumble into other well-known fairy tales, such as Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, as well as some less familiar stories, like The Juniper Tree. The metafictional approach can get distracting; along with regular interactions with the reader, Gidwitz eventually shares a pizza with, and reads his previous two novels to, Jorinda and Joringel. But interested readers won’t be there for the narrative structure. No, they’ll show up for the awesomely dark stories, full of beheadings, corpses, tyrants, murder, and terrible adults who treat children awfully until those children are empowered to fight back, taking the narrative power into their own hands to tell the stories with the happy endings they want to hear. Fans of the series will eagerly pore over this volume, which can comfortably stand on its own. Grades 4-7. --Sarah Hunter

This book, just wow. I... I... I don't know what to say. Words cannot describe this magnificent book. If there was an infinity sign for stars on this book, I would rate it Infinity. Loved it. I am eleven years old, just turned like last week, and I recommend this book for children 9or 10 preferring on how mature they are to read all these books. I loved it and will always. Now this series of books has become my all time number ones. Please buy, totally worth it, and read, also totally worth it. Thank you Adam for writing these books!!!!
