About the Author
Ernest H. Shepard was born in 1879 in London. His father was an architect and his mother whodied when he was ten years old was the daughter of a notable watercolorist. It was she who firstencouraged young Ernest to paint and draw. Art became Ernest's passion, and after attendingHeatherly's Art School and the Royal Acadamy Schools, Shepard supported himself by drawingfor the illustrated papers and by illustrating books.
In 1903, Shepard married Florence Chaplin. Florence was a mural painter and fellow student atthe Academy. The Shepards had two children: Graham, who was killed in World War II, andMary, who later illustrated Mary L. Travers Mary Poppins books.
When World War I broke out, Shepard served in France, Belgium, and Italy, attaining the rank ofMajor. On his return to England, he continued with his art. He became a regular contributor toPunch, the classic British humor magazine, where he met A. A. Milne, a man who was to beinstrumental to his career. Shepard was elected to the editorial board of Punch, and shortlythereafter, he agreed to do the illustrations for Milne's first book of verse, When We Were VeryYoung.
The illustrations that Shepard created for all four of the Pooh books received worldwide acclaim. For the next thirty years, he continued to illustrate books for both adults and children. In 1973,for the first time, he added color to his drawings for Winnie-the-Pooh. Shepard ultimately donatedseveral hundred drawings to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Ernest H. Shepard continued to pursue his love of drawing until his death in1976.copyright ? 2000 by Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers. All rights reserved.

Someone's in the Kitchen with Pooh Bear...
By mawalways
Pooh may be a Bear of Very Little Brain, but he's no slouch when it comes to honey and food in general. This cookbook was probably inevitable. The author, who also wrote "The Pooh Party Book", knows what she's doing here; this isn't just a cookbook with Pooh and friends on the cover, although Ernest Shepard did the cover art especially for this, a few years before he passed on. (He drew another new bit of artwork, but I don't know which one.) Yes, many of the recipes use honey, but not in a jokey way--Honey Toffee and Pink Honey Buttercream?! Hard to resist!! From candy, to two birthday cakes (including the classic 1-2-3-4 Cake), to Cottleston Pie (it's not just a song!), to Pooh's favorite breakfast--a honeycomb or two with a light spreading of marmalade on them--there's a Pooh-plethora of good eating in store with this book. I tried the Honey Milk Punch, which is fine for a Christmas party, and there are even instructions on making the leftovers into baked custard! Just the thing I needed! The candy recipes may be too tricky for some younger cooks, but, overall, this book has good stuff. Pooh quotes and artwork only add to the feel and spirit of it all. I've seen one or two media-character-themed cookbooks that just didn't carry the concept well, but Pooh and the citizens of the Hundred-Acre Wood were not let down here. No Eeyore-gloom with this book--just Smackerels of Something Special. (Imagine Pooh giggling here.)

The Winnie-the-Pooh Cookbook
By Kindle Customer
I have been hunting for this cookbook for several years. Back when it was first published the birthday cake recipe was published in a magazine. It was so delish! Over the years the copy I had made disappeared. Now I am so excited to be able to make it once again and look forward to trying many of the other great recipes in this book!
