The Boxes, by William Sleator

Uncle Marco's frequent, mysterious trips have fascinated Annie for years--he never tells anyone, even his beloved niece, where he is going or when he'll be back. But this time is special: He leaves Annie in charge of two sealed boxes, with strict instructions not to open either one while he's away. As time passes, curiosity gnaws at her until she can think of virtually nothing else, even though problems dog her at both home and school. She worries especially about the evil Crutchley Development, a company that's trying to buy her family's house out from under them! Would it hurt to just peek inside one of the tempting, exotic boxes? But as soon as Annie does just that, an incredibly grotesque, crab-like creature scuttles out and disappears into the basement shadows. Annie is filled with an overpowering sense of dread. And when the creature almost immediately begins to multiply, she verges on panic and wonders whether opening the other box will help or hurt. There's just one difference between Annie and Pandora, though--for Annie, there's no hope left. This intricately plotted sci-fi thriller takes on the human psyche as well as the very nature of time itself, bringing fans on a suspenseful journey they'll never forget.

From Publishers Weekly
Like Pandora, 15-year-old orphan Annie has been given a box she is forbidden to open, opens it nonetheless and unleashes something horrible. But Sleator adds a twist: Annie has a second box. Moreover the telepathic crab-like beasts that came out of the first box may appear to be the evils of the world but turn out to be the protagonist's only hope for self-actualization. As in The Beasties, Sleator creates a community of strangely empathic monsters and a teenager who, when pressed into their service, discovers the mission isn't noxious but fulfilling. The creepy-crawlies worship a god/plant/clock that lives in the second box. They build a subterranean palace, order Annie about and enact enigmatic rites, saying things like: "The Lord will be very happy about the swing ritual, and the two more who are sacrificed to the Lord's goodness" (in reference to two creatures who are swung in a suspended boat and fall to their deaths). Unfortunately, a stereotypical crew of evil land developers and a less than compelling wizard figure (Annie's nearly absentee Uncle Marco) keep the tale on a superficial level. And readers may be disappointed in the ending, which sends Annie off on a cliffhanger of an adventure and never explains the process between creatures and clock, or Uncle Marco's role in it. Perhaps Sleator has a sequel in store; in the meantime, this is his signature high-style ick and suspense, but without sufficient payoff. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8AOrphan Anne Levi tolerates her distant Aunt Ruth, with whom she lives, but adores her mysterious Uncle Marco, who flits in and out of their lives at irregular intervals. When he gives Anne two unusual boxes with strict instructions not to open them, curiosity gets the better of her. Opening the first one, she releases an unusual crablike creature that grows and reproduces rapidly; the life form and its offspring construct a fantastic palace in the basement and communicate with Anne telepathically. Dismayed by what she has done, Anne opens the second box, which she had hidden in her closet, revealing a clocklike object that has the ability to slow down time at the basement creatures' request, but only when Anne agrees to carry messages between the creatures and the clock. Unfortunately, the owners of a suspicious development company are intrigued by the time slowdowns and increase their ominous efforts to control Anne, her home, and the strange devices within it. Through her adventures, Anne grows into a self-confident teenager who is able to stand up to her overbearing aunt and trust her own instincts. Reminiscent of the complexity of Sleator's early science fiction, The Boxes introduces intriguing characters and unique situations but it leaves many loose ends and unanswered questions. Readers never find out just who or what Uncle Marco is, where he and Anne go when they enter the palace at the end, or where the boxes came from in the first place. The Boxes may be popular with Sleator's fans, but be prepared for requests for a sequel.ASusan L. Rogers, Chestnut Hill Academy, PA

From Kirkus Reviews
Sleator (The Beasties, 1997, etc.) offers a strained mix of aliens and time travel in this tepid work of science fiction. When Annie, 15, is entrusted with two mysterious boxes by her secretive, young-looking Uncle Marco, her reaction is entirely understandable: She opens both. The first crate releases a crab-like creature that asexually reproduces in the basement of her Aunt Ruth's house; the second, in her bedroom, reveals a clock-like device that can slow the flow of time. Of course, the boxes are somehow connectedthe clock, which the crab-creatures refer to as ``Lord,'' enables them to erect a miniature palace within a very short time. Rather than focus on the aliens, the story shifts to the evil Crutchley Development Corporation, which, while buying up local houses to erect a super mall, discovers the secret in Annie's basement, and steals the clock device. With her friend, Henry, Annie escapes the clutches of Crutchley employees and relatives, and returns with the clock, which, Uncle Marco divulges, is the key to his youthful appearance. As the Crutchley team bursts in, the crab creatures create a vortex through which the three humans escape. That lets Sleator off the hook for the moment, without providing any real explanation, and negates all chances for a satisfying ending. Readers will have to wait to see if there's a sequel. A fast-paced, page-turner--take this one to the beach!
By A Customer
William Sleator is one of my favorite authors. Although this is not one of his best, I couldn't put it down. Annie is an orphan who is sent to live with her Aunt Ruth--not a very pleasant person. Annie's only bright days are spent with her Uncle Marco, when he returns from his frequent mysterious trips abroad. When Marco entrusts his niece with two mysterious boxes and the warning never to a) open them or b) put them in the same room, Annie's resolve to keep them safe lasts for only one day as her curiousity gets the better of her. Once the boxes are opened, there is no going back. This is not a book to read before you go to sleep! The ending was not as satisfying as his other books; it seems like Sleator left it open for a possible sequel. Well-drawn characters let you step right into the story! When will the movie-makers (e.g. Disney) see that Sleator's books would be great for the screen!!

Before Uncle Marco goes on another of his constant trips, he leaves Annie two mysterious boxes. Like Pandora, she must keep them safe and never open them. But curiousity gets the better of her. Soon the unspeakable occurs. Grotesque, crablike creatures come out with the ability to communicate to Annie telepathically. Annie could never fathom the power they have. . .
This was a good book, partly, because I'm a fan of sci-fi/fantasy books. I couldn't put it down. There was a lot of action and cliffhangers near the end. You never knew what was going to happen next. The creatures and their customs were very creative. It's easy to read for all ages from kids to adults. The only problem was that it ended with a cliffhanger even though all of the problems have been solved by the protagonist.

The Boxes
By Devin
The boxes was an excellent book that I wold love to explain to others. I am giving this book a 4 out of 5 stars. This was a terrific science fiction book. The author wrote great detail on the creatures. Some examples from the book about the description of the creation were when Annie says, " I could see what it really looked like. I felt sick. And yet, even though I wanted to run from it, I couldn't. It legs, planted firmly on the floor. It was rubbing the front two legs totally diffferent personalities. For example, each of Annie's (main character) friends acts differently at things. William Sleator also explains how a money craving company, tries to get what they want if they cam't make a deal. For example on how thhe Crutchley Development Company can't get Annie's family to sell the house so they try to brake in the hose, and follow the family mambers. The book is about Annie, and how she opened the boxes that lead to the opening of a new life in which she has not seen. These new creatures aren't the prettiest things in the world and nicest. Thing that make Annies want to get help. I would do the same thing to. Her Uncle Marco told her not to open the boxs, but Annie thought that there was nothing bad in them, just an artifact or something. So she opened it. I think you whould to. As much as I think this book was good, the ending left you hanging. an example would be how did Annie save her house from being bought by the big company, and what happened to the creatures? The ending was pretty much stated badly. You can't have a perfect story and have a bad ending. It's just can't work. Besides that, it had a wonderful beginning and middle that entrenches you. I would really recommend this book to someone who wants to expand his or her mind or ideas. This book is also realistic. Annie goes to school like a normal day person, has freinds like everbody eles's, and goes through things that you and I would go through at school. In fact her main freinds are so cought up in love that they don't even help Annie out of the problem that she has. The growninups in this book were really out there. You have the company's manerger throwing fits, an uncle joking, making a teen- ager not believing her, and so on. This book also shows how a small community try's to push awway a big company. With a book that expands your mind, and fun to read, I think you should read this. Enjoy!

It has to be read slowly even though everyone know they story, as the pictures are just full of meanings , and you can almost see and hear the fairy godmother's rush to put all the finishing touches on the carriage. The mice turn into large and beautiful horses, and the odd rats and other strange fellows int he garden and household are magically converted into elegant footmen and coachmen. Of course, Cinderella must wait until all is converted to have her own rags bewitched into the lovely gown she will wear herself.

My granddaughters love the pictues, even better than the Disney version, and best of all, in keeping with what her own mother taught her, Cinderella not only asks about her step-sisters stoies of the ball. Even in the end Cinderella holds no gradges but encourages her sisters to join in her newfound happiness.

An elegant retelling of a classec book and one that my children will enjoy for ever.

Beautifully Illustrated
By Neem
Story is pretty standard . The pictures really tell the story and give it variety. It takes longer to take in the pictures than to read the print on the opposing page. Jeffers' delicate inkstrokes lend a light and airy quality to the story. I would have liked the author to develop all of the characters more. There is little of typical caring for the animals in this story. I missed that because it emphasized Cinderellas isolation from other people, and showed her coping with the lonliness by befriending the animals. She seems more lonely in this tale than in others. Talking to the animals and singing to them displayed the simple joy she had within her that endured despite the bullying she received. This Cinderella is a little less joyous, a little more reserved. There is a tiny red bird that appears on several of the pages, symbolizing such a connection, but it is not mentioned by the author.

There is also some subtle cleverness in this Cinderella displayed in the interaction with her sisters which accomplishes what Cinderella wants while letting her mean spirited sisters think they've had their own way. She is sweet, gentle, and kind, but perhaps not as naive as other Cindies.

Better than Disney Version
By Brett A. Hurt
I read this book to my little 4 1/2 year old daughter because I love Jeffers art work and it had great reviews. The story was different from the Disney version, and I actually liked it much better because it shows how people can make mistakes and others can forgive. When I explained to my daughter that it is slightly a different version from what she is used to, she said that did not care it was still a great story. And she paid attention to it through the entire book like I had not seen before with the other Cinderella stories. She also loved the art work on the pages. I highly recommend this book to any little girl who is in to the princesses. - Brett's Wife

Valiant Ambition: George Washington, Benedict Arnold, and the Fate of the American Revolution, by Nathaniel Philbrick

"Valiant Ambition may be one of the greatest what-if books of the age—a volume that turns one of America’s best-known narratives on its head.”
—Boston Globe

"Clear and insightful, it consolidates his reputation as one of America's foremost practitioners of narrative nonfiction."
—Wall Street Journal

From the New York Times bestselling author of In The Heart of the Sea and Mayflower comes a surprising account of the middle years of the American Revolution, and the tragic relationship between George Washington and Benedict Arnold.

In September 1776, the vulnerable Continental Army under an unsure George Washington (who had never commanded a large force in battle) evacuates New York after a devastating defeat by the British Army. Three weeks later, near the Canadian border, one of his favorite generals, Benedict Arnold, miraculously succeeds in postponing the British naval advance down Lake Champlain that might have ended the war. Four years later, as the book ends, Washington has vanquished his demons and Arnold has fled to the enemy after a foiled attempt to surrender the American fortress at West Point to the British. After four years of war, America is forced to realize that the real threat to its liberties might not come from without but from within.
Valiant Ambition is a complex, controversial, and dramatic portrait of a people in crisis and the war that gave birth to a nation. The focus is on loyalty and personal integrity, evoking a Shakespearean tragedy that unfolds in the key relationship of Washington and Arnold, who is an impulsive but sympathetic hero whose misfortunes at the hands of self-serving politicians fatally destroy his faith in the legitimacy of the rebellion. As a country wary of tyrants suddenly must figure out how it should be led, Washington’s unmatched ability to rise above the petty politics of his time enables him to win the war that really matters.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of May 2016: I spent early summers running around Valley Forge in Pennsylvania and my later childhood years living next door to Lexington, Massachusetts, where the first battle of the American Revolution was fought—so I thought I had a pretty good handle on the war. Philbrick proved me wrong with his fascinating history of the years from 1776 to 1780, when the new country teetered between victory and disaster, its destiny influenced by George Washington and Benedict Arnold. Both generals were audacious—Washington and Arnold jumped into situations risky both to themselves and to the soldiers who fought for them. Both generals suffered indignities at the hands of the Continental Congress, a body riven by its own politics and hamstrung by its inability to set taxes on its citizens. But while Washington learned to temper his aggressiveness, sought others’ wisdom, and developed a strategy for winning the war, Arnold remained self-centered and self-aggrandizing, focusing on the tactical to the detriment of the larger goal—culminating in his decision in 1780 to turn coat and deliver the fortress at West Point to the British army. Philbrick’s eye for the illuminating detail and his clear writing keeps the story taut, unlike many history books that too often overwhelm the reader with a sludge of see-I-did-my-research prose. Riveting and relevant, Valiant Ambition explodes the myth that a triumphant revolution was inevitable. --Adrian Liang

Review
"Valiant Ambition may be one of the greatest what-if books of the age—a volume that turns one of America’s best-known narratives on its head.”
—Boston Globe

"Clear and insightful, it consolidates his reputation as one of America's foremost practitioners of narrative nonfiction."
—Wall Street Journal

"Philbrick is both a meticulous historian and a captivating storyteller. The book has unforgettable novelistic details [and] also contains much astute historical analysis and argument. Philbrick sees Arnold not as the man who almost lost the war so much as the catalyst that helped to win it."
—Christian Science Monitor

“This is history at its most compelling: political machinations, military jostling and outright treachery. And Philbrick’s vivid writing brings the whistling cannon balls and half-frozen soldiers to life (and death) in vivid detail….He peels back the mythology to reveal a teetering war effort, a bickering Congress, discordant states unwilling to coalesce to support the new national government and — above all — a traitor who sought to sell out his own country for personal gain and achieved instead the one thing that no other revolutionary could: a unification of the Americans and an end to the war. And for that, we have much to thank Benedict Arnold."
--Seattle Times

"Benedict Arnold takes center stage in Nathaniel Philbrick’s vivid and in some ways cautionary tale of the Revolutionary War. The near-tragic nature of the drama hinges not on any military secrets Arnold gave to the British but on an open secret: the weakness of the patriot cause….Arnold’s betrayal still makes for great drama, proving once again that the supposed villains of a story are usually the most interesting."
--New York Times Book Review

“Philbrick wants his readers to experience the terror, the suffering and the adrenaline rush of battle, and he wants us to grit our teeth at our early politicians who, by their pettiness and shortsightedness, shape military events as profoundly as generals and admirals do. Finally, he reveals the emotional and physical cost of war on colonial society. He succeeds on all fronts.”
--Washington Post

“Philbrick has the ability to take seemingly dry facts of history and turn them into exciting prose. The players come alive and their motivations are clear. The people he chronicles are legends, so revealing to the reader what makes them human, foibles and all, helps make sense of the events that transpired and why they acted the way they did.”
—Associated Press

"Philbrick's deep scholarship, nuanced analysis, and novelistic storytelling add up to another triumph."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

“A lively account of our Revolutions’ most reviled figure.”—Kirkus Reviews

"An engrossing narrative of the war’s most difficult years... Philbrick argues that the quarrelsome, divided Americans needed Arnold’s perfidy as much as they did Washington’s greatness to unify their new nation. He pushes aside the patriotic myth to unveil the war’s messy reality—and it’s still a rousing adventure.”—BookPage

“As another American summer crawls toward the Fourth of July, and with a presidential election creeping up like Freddy on Elm Street, Nathaniel Philbrick offers some beach reading to remind us that outsized egos and a dysfunctional Congress were as much at issue in 1776 as they are now — if that’s any comfort...Valiant Ambition colorfully reconstructs the character-driven battles that defined the Revolutionary War.” –USA Today

“Look, you’re not getting tickets to Hamilton. If he were alive, George Washington himself couldn’t get tickets to Hamilton. Here’s a cheaper alternative…a new look at the first American president and contrasts him with our most famous traitor.” –The Miami Herald

By ron o
Three stars is all I can give this work, and that really disappoints me.

I am a huge fan of Revolutionary War biographies. And I am a huge Nathaniel Philbrick fan, but this is not his best effort. His story-telling style is still strong and his way of melding the story and history is still engaging. However, from the very start, this book emits an odd purpose to which the facts are stretched to fit. Washington is portrayed as a virtual incompetent, stumped and duped by Arnold and others at every turn, and Arnold as a lucky pretender who "almost" causes calamity before he finally fulfills his egomania as a traitor. These two pre-announced characterizations are repeated over and over again in furtherance of a theme: the Revolution hung by a thread with incompetence (and incompetents) abounding and circumstances falling just right. It seems like a strong revisionist intent about this War (or all wars?) over-whelmed the author's research.

Other histories of Arnold supply much more detail on his personality, as well as on such things as the invasion of Canada, Valcour Island and Saratoga. I was left dismayed by this book's lack of detail and credit given to Arnold, which is replaced by character deprecating language speculating on his REAL motives at each step. Even more striking is how he does a similar thing with Washington who, if you read Chernow's account, is anything but the shallow-thinking reactive bungler that Philbrick portrays.

I strongly suggest that ne read both: "Washington, A Life", by Chernow and then Sterne's: "Patriot and Traitor". These two books give a much more balanced presentation of both characters and their pivotal roles in the War. They present the men as human beings, with many strengths and weaknesses, not as easily understood and criticized role players moving to their inevitable fate.

Interestingly, in his earlier book, "Bunker Hill", Philbrick treated another patriot very differently. Hepractically canonized Dr. Joseph Warren who was indeed a patriot, but in a very limited arena, in one colony, and for a very short time, calling him "indispensable" to the Revolution. And yet, Washington and Arnold who were largely responsible for the survival of the cause of 13 barely united colonies, and the only major victories the army had for nearly 4 years thereafter, as well as enticing the French into the War, are framed as lucky but flawed participants in a War that played out by chance. Odd?

Might one suspect the author - a native of Nantucket - of being slightly Boston-ophobic? I urge you to read the other works about these two fascinating and important men and make up your own mind.

Riveting history
By John E. Drury
Nathaniel Philbrick, in “Valiant Ambition,” skillfully weaves together two themes in this riveting history, the Revolutionary War from 1776 coupled with the highly successful and heroic military career and ultimate treason of Benedict Arnold in 1780. With a critique of Washington in the 1776 Battle of Long Island (more critical than Joseph Ellis’ in his “Revolutionary Summer”), through the strategic navigable importance of the Hudson River and Lake Champlain, the Battles of Ticonderoga, Fort Stanwix, Saratoga and Brandywine, the winter agony at Valley Forge, and less reported battles (e.g., the Battle of Fort Mifflin), this fascinating history book is peppered with unbiased portraits of the military leaders from the Colonies (Washington, Schuyler, Gates, Greene) and the British (the Howes, Clinton, Andre’) with telling informative maps timed to the eighteenth century and placed in the appropriate chapters. Far more than a military history, the author deftly confronts the all but invisible line between loyalty to the Crown and loyalty to an emerging sense of American nationhood.

The last hundred pages seamlessly turn to the background of Arnold’s quixotic personality, self- centeredness, need for money and his marriage to the unstable Peggy Shippen. The events of September – October, 1780 play out like an opera bouffe; and if they were not so serious, at times, comedic, leading to the accidental last mile seizure of John Andre’ thus to the uncovering of Arnold’s plot to turn over West Point to the British. Philbrick concludes that Arnold’s “decision to sell his loyalty to the highest bidder, the greatest danger to America’s future came from self–serving opportunism masquerading as patriotism.”

The book ends as the fight for independence moves south. One might expect another book on that subject.

History at its best: the familiar made fresh
By Laurence R. Bachmann
A good historian, like a good musician, will take familiar material and make it seem like you are discovering it for the first time. You think you know "God Bless America", and then you hear Ray Charles sing it. You think you know the story of Benedict Arnold and then you read Nathaniel Philbrick's Valiant Ambition and become aware of chords and notes you hadn't connected with before. Philbrick's telling adds texture and nuance along with a fresh perspective that is both engaging and convincing. Interspersing the observations of Joseph Plumb Martin, a private in the Continental Army who seems to have been present for many of the War's highlights is inspired, reminding us those serving "great men" often have a different view of that greatness. The result is a delight to read.

Many authors have portrayed the Arnold-Washington relationship from an Oedipal angle. Happily, Philbrick saves that interpretation for Washington's relationship with the Marquis de Lafayette who plays only a minor part in Valiant Ambition. This telling of Arnold and Washington focuses upon how similar the two men were--extraordinarily ambitious and determined to tie their fortunes to the nation's. Each soldier was, initially, impetuous and prone to risk--some would say recklessness--that their troops would pay for with their lives. At the outset at least it was Arnold who was the better soldier. Both suffered injustices and calumnies from intriguing antagonists and a suspicious Continental Congress.

The difference between these very similar men was that one had the capability to learn from mistakes and to "grow in the job." Both were proud to a fault but only one had the ability to subordinate himself and at times his dignity to a cause greater than himself. "It was imperative that as commander in chief he [Washington] view the proceedings with as much objectivity as possible--to voice private sympathies in the context of an official proceeding--would require Washington to become, in his words, 'lost to my own character.' Here, in this reference to character, Washington hit upon the essential difference between himself and Arnold. Washington's sense of right and wrong existed outside the impulsive demands of his own self-interest." (pg. 246).

It is this strength of character, character in contrast to a wanton narcissism that leads to the deification of one and the demonization of the other. For all the slights and injustices Arnold could justly decry it is impossible to argue America's most famous traitor doesn't deserve our contempt to this day. What is so refreshing about Valiant Ambition is it makes abundantly clear there is much to despise in America, circa 1776-1781. "Sunshine patriots" who, finding war difficult, decide to let others (slaves and immigrants) fight it for them; Chicken hawk generals like Horatio Gates who wrap themselves in another's glory and hightail it away when battles go badly; state legislators without the vision or the decency to feed and clothe an army of men literally starving or freezing to death on their behalf.

Nathaniel Philbrick final insight is that Arnold did perform one last invaluable service for his country. His treachery awakened a nation to the fact that it had more in common with him than many would have liked to admit. Americans had grown complacent, self-absorbed and indifferent to those who were actually paying the price for liberty. Arnold's treason awoke the slackers and shamed the selfish into rededicating themselves to a cause they had, for all intents and purposes, abandoned. For that, we can all thank Benedict Arnold.

It reminds me of Dad
By Bronwyn
My father died 10 years ago when I was nineteen. I know he used to read "when we were very young" to me when I was a child, but it wasn't until I began to read the poems as bedtime stories to my 2 year old, that I began to remember my dad's emphasis and inflections. As I read my favourites to my son, I can almost hear Dad reading them to me.
I am thrilled that my son asks for Christopher Robin as his bedtime stories and "Hoppity" and "Market Square" have become his favourites too. He is an avid reader and I am just beginning to introduce him to poetry, what better way than A A Milne - It makes me feel like a child again and connects a grandson and a grandfather who never met each other.

GREAT idea but...
By Brice A. Mccauley
My Side of the Mountain has always been one of my favorite books, and I have often thought that a field guide about all the things Sam does and uses would be great. So when I saw the book I just had to have it! The Original book had a few errors such as saying to watch what the animals eat and then eat that, but I figured the Pocket Guide would correct that! However when I started reading it the first thought I had was "have they ever even started a fire with a bowdrill?" On page 18 they state "Now cut a notch, almost, but not quite to the pit." Then on page 20 it states "As the wood heats it will make a small pile of coals. Move them gently until they come in contact with the tinder in the fire board notch. A small fire should start." A fire would never start this way, and the notch needs to go almost, but not quite to the center of the pit. The friction rubs off wood that collects in the notch and when it gets hot enough becomes an ember. This ember is then transferred to the tinder and gently blown on until the flame starts.
Sam uses the flint and steel in the original book exclusively to make fire and eludes to making char cloth, which wasn't even mentioned in the Pocket Guide!
I was most disappointed in the plant section of the book! The Pocket Guide did show some Poisonous plants, and Medicinal plants that weren't used the MSOTM, however only about 9 plants that Sam mentioned using in the original book were shown, and I believe there are almost 40. Several of the plants I had never heard of such as, Pennyroyal, Teaberry, Snakeweed and Lousewort and I looked forward to learning more about them. But they weren't in the Pocket Guide!! I still really like the idea, and it is a good little book for what it is. But MSOTM was such a great book, that this one really suffers saying it was based on it! I am torn as to whether I would have bought this book had I know what was in it before buying!

Wonderful Resource
By K. Wilder
I purchased this book to go along with the study I am doing with my boys (ages 8 &9) on "My Side of the Mountain". We love it! Although owning "My Side of the Mountain" is not a requirement to enjoying this book, it is a WONDERFUL resource to use in conjunction with the book. There are lots of pictures to help go along with what we are reading about in the book. The chapters are divided up into topics and not necessarily in story order with the main text. Chapters include: Camping, Shelters, Fire, Water, Fishing/Roadkill&Bugs, Outdoor Cooking, Edible Wild Plants, Poisonous Plants, Medicine Plants, Useful Knots, Animal Tracking, Birdsongs, Falconry, Hiking & Trailblazing, Finding Your Way, Outdoor Fun, Outdoor Safety, and Recipes. The author has mastery of these subjects by having lived these out in her own life, however, the book is NOT and exhaustive look at these subjects. For kiddos (and some adults) this book gives the perfect amount of information to begin the journey of exploring and surviving the Great Outdoors. Lots of details are given without getting too involved in each subject. It has been a great find for us and has been a lot of fun to see which topics appeal to each of my kiddos.

Hugs from the grandchildren
By Mary Blackwell
I bought 2 of these books. They were gifts for my grandsons. I have not read the book. But the boys are thrilled with it. Their ages are 11 and12. They both love the outdoors and we go to the river as often as possible. I got lots of hugs and squeels of delight when I gave them their books. I would recommend this for all boys and girls who enjoy being outside.
