In the spirit of Gretchen Rubin’s megaseller The Happiness Project and Eric Weiner’s The Geography of Bliss, a journalist embarks on a project to discover what it takes to love where you live

The average restless American will move 11.7 times in a lifetime. For Melody Warnick, it was move #6, from Austin, Texas, to Blacksburg, Virginia, that threatened to unhinge her. In the lonely aftermath of unpacking, she wondered: Aren’t we supposed to put down roots at some point? How does the place we live become the place we want to stay? This time, she had an epiphany. Rather than hold her breath and hope this new town would be her family’s perfect fit, she would figure out how to fall in love with it—no matter what.
How we come to feel at home in our towns and cities is what Warnick sets out to discover in This Is Where You Belong. She dives into the body of research around place attachment—the deep sense of connection that binds some of us to our cities and increases our physical and emotional well-being—then travels to towns across America to see it in action. Inspired by a growing movement of placemaking, she examines what its practitioners are doing to create likeable locales. She also speaks with frequent movers and loyal stayers around the country to learn what draws highly mobile Americans to a new city, and what makes us stay. The best ideas she imports to her adopted hometown of Blacksburg for a series of Love Where You Live experiments designed to make her feel more locally connected. Dining with her neighbors. Shopping Small Business Saturday. Marching in the town Christmas parade.
Can these efforts make a halfhearted resident happier? Will Blacksburg be the place she finally stays? What Warnick learns will inspire you to embrace your own community—and perhaps discover that the place where you live right now . . . is home.

Turning 30 and Moving Cross Country
By JustTrish
When I saw this book had only 2 reviews I felt I had to speak up. I don't write reviews on books even though reading is practically my religion for the simple reason that I feel my voice doesn't really add to the conversation. When power house books like All the Light We Cannot See is getting 23, 752 reviews and counting I feel like a drop in the ocean. I'll just keep reading and keep my opinions to myself (or to close friends).

What changed was that this unique book fell into my hands at the right time. In less than 3 months I'm leaving my home state with my husband, dog, and all our worldly possessions to cross mountains, desert, and snow (all of which this Houston, TX girl has never seen in her 28 years) on my husbands 30th birthday because we are chasing a dream of the grass is greener WAY on the other side. Vancouver, WA might turn out to be a huge disappointment but that craving for a fresh start has promoted us to hit the reset button and start life anew in another state.

Melody Warnick, the author of this book, has done what I'm about to do 6 times in her life. According to Warnick on average a person will jump ship 11.7 times. These statics show that a lot of us have fallen into a habit of chasing the next best thing, hoping that in a new land they will finally feel that internal warmth and inner knowing of "home".

For Warnick after move number six from Austin, Texas to Blacksburg, Virginia she was sure that she would finally be wooed by Blacksburg and be at peace. But Real Blacksburg as opposed to Fictional Blacksburg (the one Warnick had created in her head while obessessing scrolling through Google Street View at 1:00 am) was, as she said, bleak. She wasn't happy and the thought she will once again have to move didn't make her joyful. Her girls were getting to be school age and she wanted them to have something permanent. A real sense of home. And so, Warnick begins Love Where You Live Experiments in her new hometown. This time she was staying.

How does a book about staying help someone like me who has decided to go? The answer is complicated. In reading this book I have learned the reason why I have felt so uneasy all these years in my home state isn't about the politics, the heat, or the bugs. Because the things she writes about are things I have done and still have felt no attachment to my place. Texas has been the home of my head but not my heart. And once I land in Washington with nothing more than my bed, dog, and husband what I'll be searching for to make me feel at home won't be the next Pottery Barn duvet cover. I will be walking the streets, eating local foods, saying hi to my neighbors, and spend my money at the local art supply store as opposed to the mammoth Hobby Lobby. Maybe I'll volunteer at the library and go to coffee houses rather than stay at home sobbing on my bathroom floor and lamenting that I ever moved in the first place.

When I go I will be sure to take this book and the reminder that the warmth of home doesn't happen overnight. That just because I pack up and leave doesn't mean that I'm a newly made person. And that to truly love a place and stay where you are beings with the simple act of experiencing joy for as long as you are there.

Perfect Read for Anyone Who Feels a Bit Disconnected In Their City or Neighborhood
By J. Littlefield
When everyone is talking about finding the right place to live, this book is a refreshing look about how to fall in love with just about any place you find yourself. Lots of compelling checklists about buying local, volunteering, getting involved in politics, and finding happiness in your surroundings. I particularly love the author's Love Where You Live Principles list in the back of the book. The whole book seems aimed at helping the reader accomplish #11: "Experience joy for as long as you're there."

Must read. Loved it!
By C. Lehr
As someone who has been struggling to love where I live, this book really speaks to me. The author is funny and very engaging. It's also an easy read. Most importantly though this book nails it on so many levels. It really captures how we as humans beings always see the grass as greener on the other side while not embracing our life as it is. What really surprised me is how practical this book is. The author doesn't approach anything from a theoretical perspective. She gives very detailed practical advice for engaging your town and ultimately engaging in your life. She obviously researched the heck out of her subject matter and came up with an extremely well organized book that on the one hand is incredibly inspiring and on the other hand extremely doable. It's not often that an author presents such feel good information in a way that is immediately applicable. Anyway, I obviously loved the book. I've been been waiting for it's release for several week now and was not disappointed! It captures so many of the issues we face today in our disconnected world - and gives solutions. It really should be a must read for everyone. Even those already in love with their place.

Winnie Ille Pu Semper Ludet (The House at Pooh Corner), by A. A. Milne

The enchanting tales of Pooh and his friends were first brought to readers in classic Latin form in 1960 with the publication of Winnie Ille Pu. It remains the only book in Latin ever to grace The New York Times List. Now Winnie Ille Pu Semper Ludet is available as a companion volume. Perfect for the novice as well as the Latin scholar, Brian Staples' translation proves once again that Latin is not a dead language. And Pooh, as everyone knows, will live forever.

Bilingually playful...
By FrKurt Messick
I sing of a boy and a bear...

Perhaps Vergil would have opted for Pu (Pooh) rather than Aeneid had he the choice, and begun his tome not in the journey from Troy, but rather the journey around the forest. The tradition of translating Pooh into Latin started with Alexander Lenard, who translated 'Winnie the Pooh' in 1960; Brian Staples carries on the tradition in his 1980 Latin translation of 'The House at Pooh Corner'.

I have this sitting next to books of equally interesting translation exercise, such as a translation of modern poetry into Old English, and Henry Beard's translations of various ordinary statements and phrases in Latin (and cat behaviours in to French) also sit next to this honoured tome.

When I returned from Britain and began to think in theological-training terms, I had to re-acquaint myself with Latin; for an exam I had to memorise one biblical passage, one passage from the Aeneid, and one passage of my choice. I chose Winnie Ille Pu and Winnie Ille Pu Semper Ludet, and, as this type of work had not been excluded from the list, I was permitted this indulgence (I believe that the exam list now has a section of excluded works, including this one, more's the pity).

Do not be frightened off by the fact that this is a book in Latin. It is very accessible, and quite fun to read with the English version of Winnie-the-Pooh at its side. The Latin version has kept many of the original illustrations as well as the page layout forms.

Statements sound much more grand in Latin: 'Ior mi,' dixit sollemniter, 'egomet, Winnie ille Pu, caudam tuam reperiam.' which means, 'Eeyore,' he said solemnly, 'I, Winnie-the-Pooh, will find your tail for you.'

This is a delightful romp through a language study. I have recommended the Pooh (sorry, Pu) books to friends who want an introduction to Latin, together with the Lingua Latina series, which uses a natural language method for instruction.

Like Lenard before him, Staple's work of translation is obviously a great labour of love here. Staples worked on his translation while recovering from a stroke; a resident of Sutton Coldfield, England, he passed away in 1996. This work is no small endeavour, but rather a thorough and engaging translation of the continuing Pooh story. One can (as I do) set the classic English version of Winnie-the-Pooh side-by-side with Winnie-ille-Pu Semper Ludet and follow line by line the engaging story, which translates well into this one-time universal language. And why ever not? Surely if there is a story nearly universal appeal, it would be of dear Winnie.

As A.A. Milne was a graduate of the Westminster School (which is housed down the block from my old Parliamentary offices) and of Cambridge, he might consider the translation of his classic work into the classical language a signal honour, and one wonders if, given the fact that Milne studied classical languages himself, if he ever translated any pieces, however small, into those languages that every English schoolboy learns to hate and love.

Of course, being a person of small importance myself, I identify much more with Porcellus (Piglet) than Pu. I do enjoy a good Tigris (Tigger) every now and then. Pu (with the able assistance of Staples) has given me a bilingual command of that language of difference and universality.

Long live the Porcelli amicus! May he always be playing (semper ludet).

A must for Pooh and Latin fans alike!
By Erin Parfitt
Who can resist a classic tale of a boy and his bear retold in the language of the ancient Romans? Translator Brian Staples does a wonderful job of keeping to Milne's original adventures while adhering to the confines of a "dead" language. This book is a must for those who love Latin! Proudly display this little treasure next to your tattered copy of Winnie Ille Pooh, translated by Alexander Lenard. And if you simply love Pooh, yet know nothing of classical Latin, this book is certainly one to add to your collection. Being that I teach Latin and have been an avid Pooh fan for the extent of my life, I can't imagine not having this book in my library!

Snuggle Piggy is one cute pigno wonder his Aunt Daisy sewed him a cozy blanket "full of all the creatures in the universe." She keeps it clean for him, knowing how much he likes it. What she doesn't know is that at night, after Snuggle Piggy is all tucked in, the creatures on the blanket come alive and play with him. They sing and dance and help him go to sleep. Then one day, after Aunt Daisy has hung up the washed blanket to dry, it begins to rain. The blanket stays outside, and Snuggle Piggy is forced to go to bed without it. He thinks he can hear the creatures on the blanket his friends calling for help. He saves them from the rain and brings them inside to warm up. Snuggle Piggy's Magic
By Chris Kitchell
I first read this book to my daughter many years ago. It quickly became one of my favorites. The first and formost reason being that I also owned a magic blanket when I was a young boy, and my second daughter would never let go of her "Blue Case" a pillow case she took everywhere. The charm of Snuggle Piggy and his blanket was genuine, the illustrations very personnel and true to feelings. The eyes of Snuggle Piggy just broke your heart as he saw his blanket get tossed to and fro by the mean thunder storm. There was love, turmoil and a happy ending, complete with a rainbow and good friends. Any child with a blanket or close stuffed animal friend will enjoy and identify with Snuggle Piggy and the Magic Blanket.

my favorite of all times!
By lh
My sister actually made a real blanket - the exact duplicate from the book for my daughter when she was about 4.
I'm a librarian and I take the book/blanket to school and read it to my kinder classes every year.
They all want to know if the blanket is really magic and I tell them that I asked my daughter (who is now 26 and teaches kindergarten) and she said I'll never tell.
One of the best books of all time!

Wolf Review
By A Customer
Wow. What a great series. The 1st book was so gripping i read it in one day. Couldnt put it down. The 2nd book got a bit boring, but i kept reading to keep the plot going. Good thing. It had a great ending, and the 3rd book was as good as- if not better than- the 1st. I cant wait to read Wolf Wing(the 4th in the series) and hope there are more after it.
This book reminded me of two other books( okay, one is a series). Ella Enchanted( a much better book than movie) and Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen(a series). If you like this, read those, and vice versa.
So. The books. The first one follows the story of Claidi, who is a servant in a place called the House. She runs off with a prince into the Waste, discovering many secrets as well as many new places and people. I wont tell any more so as not to spoil the books. Read them!!!!!!!!!!!!

Angieville: THE CLAIDI JOURNALS
By Angela Thompson
Just over six years ago I walked into this little bookstore called Books of Wonder for the first time in my life. And on the front end cap, directly facing the revolving door, on the middle shelf, was a thick book with a purple cover and a gold spine entitled THE CLAIDI JOURNALS. I had heard of Tanith Lee before, but never read any of her books, and I had her sorted in my mind as a dark fantasy/horror writer. As I picked up the hefty volume and examined it, it appeared it was actually an omnibus collection of three novels: Wolf Tower, Wolf Star, and Wolf Queen. A fourth and final installment--Wolf Wing--was subsequently published. I usually prefer to start with the original volumes themselves and then invest in an omnibus edition if I like them and if it's a particularly attractive edition. In this case, however, something about the collection grabbed me. DH and I were stopping off in New York to visit my sister-in-law and her family on our way to Italy to visit my parents, and I was in need of some good trip reading to take with me. Then I made the mistake of opening the book and reading the first few lines.

***

Yes.

I stole this. This book.

I don't know why. It looked . . . nice, I suppose, and nothing has been nice for years.

***

That right there sealed the deal. I loved how she sounded both defiant and utterly lost at the same time and I simply had to know who she was, what was in that book she stole, and why things had gone so badly for her for so long. So, like Claidi, I made up my mind to take the book with me. Only I decided to go ahead and pay for it first.

Claidi is a servant and has been her entire life. In the House of Lady Jade Leaf, she spends her days and nights forced to wait on the ridiculous princess hand and foot. Tempers are short and punishments abundant in the House and Claidi chafes against the ties that bind her, physically and emotionally. One day she comes across an empty book and decides--despite the no doubt painful consequences--that she will take it. It turns into a journal of sorts for the lonely young woman, in which she records her thoughts, and later her adventures. For soon after she discovers the book, a stranger walks inside the walls of the House. A stranger from beyond the desert, with golden hair, and an escape route in his hands. And before she knows it, Claidi is off with the enigmatic Argul on the adventure of a lifetime. Trouble is, she's never quite sure where they are headed or who might be after them. It's a rough and tumble journey, full of misdirection, aborted weddings, and not a little abduction. There are palaces whose rooms refuse to stay put, monstrous creatures, and princes who look too much like people they are not. And all of it leads to the mysterious Wolf Tower, which seems to hold in it the secret of who she is and who she might become. Claidi spends much of the time confused and near panic, but she is a resourceful young woman, and her frequent journal entries chronicle the unfolding story in engaging detail.

These books are a wild ride. Claidi has something of the Tamora Pierce heroine about her. Adventure seems to be in her blood, though she's not quite as devil-may-care in her approach to it as some of Pierce's girls. She is thrust forcefully into the outside world after living an extremely sheltered, though awful, life and having the story told in her own words in journal format brings her quickly into the reader's affections. Her growing relationship with Argul is quite sweet and a bright spot among all the subterfuge. This is another case of people not always being exactly who you think they are and, over the course of the four books, there were several times I came perilously close to washing my hands of most of them. All but Claidi, really. But at the same time it served to cement my loyalty to the main character and remember to question each new character that arrived, which is really not so bad a thing after all. Each book expands on the world they live in and these revelations come as just as much a shock to Claidi as they do to the reader. At times, it can be a bit frustrating to be so in the dark. But the world Lee paints is so foreign, so innately other that I found myself awfully intrigued to find out what particularly rabbit she would pull out of the hat next. There is definitely a strong thread of science fiction running through the fantasy and I found the blend unusual and refreshing. All in all, a highly entertaining series featuring a heroine I never tired of and who becomes much more than she would otherwise have been because she stole a book and took a chance on a stranger. Recommended for fans of Garth Nix and Sherwood Smith.

Funny and Cute
By Amazon Customer
If you're feeling a little down, or just in the mood for a little laugh this is the perfect book for it. Filled with little wisdoms this book is funny and cute. They really made my laugh and some of them I could relate to. This book is filled with pictures from the old books, and if you've read them, or seen the old cartoons you might recongnize some of these senarios. One of my favorites is:
"If you are trying to find your way home, and keep finding yourself instead back at the same sand-pit, it may be that the sand-pit is following you about."
The book is filled with cute little wisdoms like that, many that are funnier. I really enjoyed the book, and I think everyone will.

Frightful's Daughter, by Jean Craighead George

Fans of Sam Gribley and his falcon friend, Frightful, will thrill to Jean Craighead George's new book about these beloved characters. Now living in the wild, Frightful and her mate hatch three babies. The female, Oksi, "does things her own way" and, like her mother, is destined for greatness. Readers will follow her singular path from the time she breaks out of her rosy shell to her young adulthood, when Sam saves her life and they bond.

Jean George's themes--the interdependence of human and animal, respect for the wild, and the importance of nature--shine through in her storytelling. In the latest book in her best-selling wilderness series, she introduces a younger group of readers to that one mountain among thousands and the one boy, Sam, who lives there. With majestic, sweeping artwork of the sky and forest near Sam's mountain, Daniel San Souci adds his vision to the story of these noble, remarkable raptors and their human friends.

From Publishers Weekly
Newbery Medalist Jean Craighead George extends the audience for My Side of the Mountain with Frightful's Daughter, a picture book starring a peregrine offspring of that novel's feathered heroine. When two of Frightful's three babies are stolen, Sam Gribley (Frightful's human buddy from the novel) captures Oksi for safekeeping, bringing her to his home deep in the forest. Daniel San Souci's watercolors portray the falcon's grace and the beauty of the natural setting.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-Oksi, a peregrine falcon eyas (chick) hatched among the girders of a high, river-spanning bridge, doesn't always listen to her mother. This picture-book account of life's perils for endangered birds continues the story of Sam Gribley and his falcon Frightful, which George began in My Side of the Mountain and continued in two subsequent novels, On the Other Side of the Mountain and Frightful's Mountain (all Dutton, 2000). Illegal poaching is a continuing theme, and because she doesn't stay in the nest with her siblings, Oksi narrowly misses being caught. Sam's fortuitous appearance to rescue her strains credibility, but George still has a way with story in conveying the world of nature and the impact of humans on it. This tale follows the intrepid young bird through her year of growing up in captivity, returning to the wild, and coming back with her mate to build their first nest at Sam's forest home. San Souci's rust-toned views provide panoramic vistas of mountains and forest and a grand sense of the bridge as well as informative close-ups of the falcons and Sam's rustic dwelling. The drama of Oksi's brushes with danger, the romanticized connection between Sam and the birds, and the satisfying denouement provide a pleasing introduction to the peregrine falcon. Sam's previous involvement with Frightful is deftly incorporated, and the story stands on its own. It could also serve as a nice introduction to My Side of the Mountain for children ready to read or listen to the longer book.

From Booklist
Gr. 1-3. When a thief steals two of falcon Frightful's three chicks, young Sam Gribley rescues the remaining chick. Living alone on a mountain, Sam had trained Frightful to hunt with him, setting her free after a year. Now he needs to help her daughter, Oski, survive by feeding her until she can hunt on her own. Eventually Oski and a mate return--atypical of falcons but "Oski always does things her own way." Falcon facts are folded into the narrative, but it's the handsome watercolor illustrations that bring the birds to life. The gorgeous panoramic, aerial scenes realistically depict the birds and lush countryside. Adults may recognize Sam and Frightful from George's My Side of the Mountain, but picture-book-age readers will wonder why the boy is living alone in a giant tree in the Catskills. The story would have been stronger without the ties to George's previous books for older readers, but the beautiful scenery will lure children and the falcon lore will intrigue. Julie Cummins

Good Book
By M.Halsted
The books arrived in great shape. They were bigger than I expected. My 10 yr old nephew was glad to have them, but I think he would have preferred they were smaller and paper back, not hard cover.
Over all, beautifull illustrations.

Nobility Soars!
By BeatleBangs1964
Fewer things are as beautiful as a falcon in flight. The illustrations in this book are nothing short of spectacular and readers will love them along with the wonderful stories of Frightful, the falcon-gentle who was introduced in the "My Side of the Mountain" series. Readers got to know Frightful and her human friend, Sam from "My Side of the Mountain," "The Other Side of the Mountain" and "Frightful's Mountain" and grew to love her as Sam did.

Frightful, once secured her independence has 3 eyas (young raptors). Two of the little falcons are stolen and it is up to Sam, the boy who bonded with Frightful early in her life to recover them. He brings the remaining bird to his home where she will be safe.

The young falcon is quite independent and not apt to heed the warnings of Frightful, who knows all too well the dangers in the world. Oksi, the young falcon-gentle has her own mind about the world as she knows it. Poaching is a real danger and Oksi refuses to stay put in her aerie (raptor's nest) with the other two birds. She is nearly captured by poachers.

Readers go on harrowing adventures with the young raptor as she lives a year as a captive; her successful return to the wild and finding a mate to build an aerie near where Sam lives. It is heartwarming that Sam has has such a way with these incredibly beautiful, majestic birds.

The illustrations will delight readers further as they glide through this delightful book on falcon's wings.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—For her 16th birthday, Penny Moore's parents give her the gift of six weeks at summer camp. It's not what she wanted, so she makes an agreement with them: when they come to visit her after a month, if she still wants to go home, she can. Her first days there are not promising. Penny discovers that her bunkmates are loud, crude, rude, and mean. They've all been together for years, and Penny is an outsider. Even if not for that, the teen still can't figure out why they like being there so much; she sees no fun in any of their silly antics. So she decides to try to get sent home. Her efforts backfire, but she does gain the respect of her bunkmates and, in time, their friendship. Penny even wins over Logan Worthe, her arch enemy. When her parents visit—big surprise—Penny no longer wants to go home. She's grown to like the cheers, the sports, the camp routines, and the other girls. In the end Penny realizes that the girls like camp because it allows them to act like kids again. That may've been true for the author, who spent many summers at camp, but her story isn't convincing. The theme is too light to carry an entire book, the characters aren't well developed, and the many episodes don't add up to much. Teens will not be compelled to keep turning the pages in this ho-hum story.—Catherine Ensley, Latah County Free Library District, Moscow, ID

From Booklist
On Penny's sixteenth birthday, she receives an unexpected, unwanted, and downright upsetting present from her parents: eight weeks at a girl's camp in Maine. The only new resident of the privileged inner sanctum that is Bunk One at Fern Lake Camp, she enters a strange new world of camp cheers and long-term friendships. One of her fellow campers is Logan Worthe, leader of the most powerful clique at their private high school in Manhattan and the only person more eager than Penny to see her go home. Roter shows the seesaw of Penny's emotions as well as her realization that one can create a different identity away from home and school. Other characters are more lightly sketched but distinct and believable. This very readable novel portrays a teenager's insecurity as the new girl breaking into a set of old friends as well as the comforting routine, the sometimes low humor, and the occasional breakout madness of life at a girl's camp. Certainly a book worth writing home about
By Erika Sorocco
Penny Moore went to bed a fifteen-year-old, and woke-up a sixteen-year-old. Technically, the girl is no longer a child. She finally has the freedom to do more "adult" things. Like drive a car. Or maybe even get a tattoo. But even with her new grown-up attitude, Penny refuses to dispose of her Hello Kitty nightshirt. The same one she's been wearing since 1998, even though it only comes up to her waist. But don't put her on the fashion-don't list just yet. The one thing she's craving are a pair of Seven jeans to ring in her Sweet Sixteen. The jeans retail for a whopping $150, but Penny is convinced that she'll be the lucky reciprocate of them, considering her parents know how much they mean to her. Unfortunately, when she lifts the lid off her gift, the only thing she sees is a collared t-shirt with the letters FLC on it. Penny couldn't be more confused, until her parents reveal that they've given her an all-expenses paid trip to Fern Lake Camp, where she'll be spending eight glorious weeks surrounded by girls she'll be able to bond with. Sure, Penny was dying to attend sleepaway camp - back when she was eight - and can't believe that her parents wasted their hard-earned money on something as trivial as camp, especially when it's the last thing Penny wanted for her Sweet Sixteen. But, seeing the disappointment on her parents faces, Penny gives them an ultimatum. She'll attend Fern Lake for four weeks, then, when Visitors' Day arrives, if she totally hates her summer set-up, she can leave early, and spend the rest of the summer moping around, studying for the SAT's, and searching for a job that will earn her some cold, hard cash. But before Penny even boards the plane that will whisk her away from her Bronx apartment, and deposit her in the wilds of Maine, she realizes that she's made the biggest mistake of her life. For none other than Logan Worthe, Manhattan's It Girl, and the ruler of Penny's school - Lakefield Academy. Logan is known for taking charge of every situation, and keeping all eyes on her, no matter what; which is exactly what Logan does when she arrives at LaGuardia Airport. Penny notes that the girl is Queen of Fern Lake, as well as high school, and plans on avoiding her at all costs - if possible. Unfortunately, that's the last thing Penny is able to accomplish, for she's placed in Bunk One - Logan's bunk - almost instantaneously - and is forced to contend with non-stop cheering, and inane conversations that make her feel as if she's losing IQ points. Logan can sense that Penny despises Fern Lake, and makes a pact with her to get her kicked out before Visitors' Day. Penny is only too happy to comply, figuring she'll be better off at home. And Logan couldn't be happier with the arrangement. After all, she refuses to have a new girl - especially one who knows her reputation from high school - ruin her last summer ever at Fern Lake. But as Penny begins to open herself up to the girls surrounding her, and the fresh outdoors, she begins to see just why Logan is so possessive of Fern Lake, and realizes that she, too, wants to stick around for the summer. But Logan refuses to break their pact, and adds in a little blackmail to ensure that Penny is forced to disappear - STAT!

With her debut novel GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT Jordan Roter proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with within the world of YA literature, by bringing three very important items to the forefront: original ideas, well-developed characters, and a fun plot that made the reader feel as if she - or he - were a part of the story. With CAMP RULES, Roter manages to secure that title, by, once again, penning a novel full of original, fun ideas that speak to the reader; while, at the same time, creating a bevy of characters, whose unique personalities feed off one another, creating an ideal group of unlikely friends. Mixing part Cecily von Ziegesar's IT GIRL, part Melissa J. Morgan's CAMP CONFIDENTIAL, with a splash of the Disney Channel reality show BUG JUICE thrown in for good measure, Roter's CAMP RULES is a novel that is sure to add a little sizzle to your summer. Penny Moore is a wallflower, just looking to bloom into a princess who worries more about studying vocab words for the SAT's, than boys, looking good, and having fun. Penny blends together two different age categories by embracing her inner child - by refusing to get rid of her Hello Kitty nightshirt - and her looming young adulthood. Her determination to remove herself from camp before she has even fully immersed herself within the sleepaway life, and her feelings of being ignored by those around her are quite reminiscent of Sam's character in GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT. Logan, on the other hand, is very similar to the character of Kate in GIRL IN DEVELOPMENT, considering, from the outside, she looks like a girl who has everything - perfect clothes, hair, make-up, tons of money, all the boys - yet she's still not happy because she's forced to contend with absentee parents who hardly know she exists. Both girls present such raw emotion, that borders on vulnerability, for the reader, instantly making it hard to dislike either one of them - no matter how downright nasty their antics get. It doesn't hurt matters any that both Penny and Logan are surrounded by a handful of delightful, Bunk One girls who each have their own, slightly bizarre personalities that make them stand out from the crowd and make them memorable long after the last page is turned. From the food-loving, yet oft-times clueless, Gabby; to the nature-adoring Willow. And Tess, a tennis star looking to leave behind her racket and embrace her true passion, art; to the boy-crazy Missy, and the slightly-sarcastic, yet always fun, Jade. But I can't fail to mention my personal favorite character, Morgan. A precocious - yet utterly adorable nine-year-old - with a penchant for falling down, who happens to be harboring a heart of gold. While many authors bring various characters to the forefront, yet fail to differentiate them in any way, or give them personalities of their own, Roter succeeds in doing just that, making each girl seem like one of your very own pals. As someone who has never attended summer camp, Roter has reinstated my desire to catch the closest bus, and head off for the summer of a lifetime. Her sleepaway expertise makes summer camp sound like the most amazing experience. And, after reading this book, I'm sure camps across the nation will see quite a jump in the numbers of wannabe campers! Certainly a book worth writing home about.

"bad-mazing"
By Susan Svancarek
My 15 year old daughter and her friend read this for a school project. On it, she has to say the following:

"Camp Rules? Not so much. I mean, it's an OK book once you get past the terrible editing errors (narrative exclamation points like "...she hadn't even brushed her teeth yet!")and gaping plot holes (Logan completely disappears from the book for an entire chapter despite being a main character).

My friend and I did enjoy it, but not really in the way an author would want it to be enjoyed. We constantly make fun of the rediculous editing errors, strange escapades that amount to nothing, and terrible inserts from supporting characters that should NOT be where they are ("I have tomatoes... From my garden!").

I would recommend it ONLY to an elementary school kid (so you don't get tripped up by obvious editing errors)or a teenager who is reading it with a friend. But honestly, it's not that good. I'll have fun giving a report on it though!"

Charles Rennie Mackintosh: the Complete Furniture, Furniture Drawings & Interior Designs, by Roger Billcliffe

The great Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868–1928) has come to be seen as one of the most influential early modern designers. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, whom he rivals in popularity today, Mackintosh viewed the design of furniture and interiors as a vital part of his architectural work. Today, reproductions and objects based on his design ideas are wildly popular.

This is the fourth edition of the primary reference work on Mackintosh furniture and the first time it has been in print in more than twenty years. Completely revised and redesigned, with new information and many new color illustrations, the book documents every surviving piece of Mackintosh furniture and every drawing, as well as his interior designs (including reconstructions of interiors that have been destroyed).
