Kindergarten-Grade 2-From angry to zany, readers are asked to guess the feelings demonstrated by the children in the crisp, full-color photos. If that were all the book attempted-exploring and naming feelings-it would probably be successful. However, Hausman incorporates too many concepts within its pages. There is the guessing of the emotion from the child's four-or-five line clue and an "I Spy" border of objects and words beginning with the featured letter on each page. An appendix gives an alphabetical listing of the objects to be found for each letter and names the emotion, but does not define or explain it. The text is uneven-some of the children's "stories" that act as clues are in rhyme, while others are not. And in order to include an emotion for every letter, there are some feelings children will not be able to put a name to, such as "vanity" or "queasiness." While the idea behind this book is worthwhile, there is too much else going on for it to really stand out.

Fantastic Learning Tool

I used this book as a vocabulary and alphabet learning tool for my Kindergartners. The book's excellent photography of each feeling along with the very realistic paragraphs helped my students expand their vocabulary. We were able to use words such as proud, confused,... delighted in our daily conversations. This is one alphabet book for every teacher's collection.

A Triumph For Grade-School Kids

This was an entertaining book for young children who could relate to the pictures and have fun guessing the emotions displayed. This would be a welcome addition to any Back-to-School or holiday shopping list for first, second or third graders!!! I look forward to Ms. Hausman's next offering.

THE BEST BOOK ABOUT FEELINGS

My 3 year old got this book as a gift....it was the BEST book we have ever seen about feelings. It explores a much broader scope of feelings than every other book we have. The riddles are clever and keep my son's attention. He loves to guess which feeling the boy or girl is experiencing. The photographs are great tools in helping him guess the particular feeling. It is a MUST-HAVE for every child to learn how to discuss their feelings. After we read each riddle and guess the correct feeling, I ask my son for some more examples of times he experiences that particular feeling....again, it is a FABULOUS book about feelings. It is an active way for kids to learn how to express their feelings.

Transcendent Prose

This is one my very favorite of Matthiessen's impressive canon, ranking easily with Far Tortuga and The Snow Leopard. Indeed, I think some of the passages in The Tree Where Man Was Born might surpass the stunning Himalaya descriptions in the latter book. Matthiessen's eye for landscapes is unparalleled, and his lyric evocations of beast and horizon have an otherworldly quality. A prime example, and one to look out for, is his account of finding rhinoceros tracks on the high volcanic slopes of Mt. Lengai. Another highlight are his crystalline observations of ecological moments during a vigil atop an East African kopje.

A beautiful book, to be read with care

The Tree Where Man Was Born - much like the Snow Leopard - is not light reading. Although this frustrated me when I first started reading Matthiessen, I've come to relish his writing. In an era of constant distractions and mindless entertainment, Matthiessen's work requires my complete attention. At times I wasn't so much reading this book as I was meditating on it. Thoreau wrote that "Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written." I have no doubt that a great deal of care and deliberation went into the creation of this book.

Reading The Tree Where Man Was Born was worth every effort because of the frequent stunning prose - which evokes sadness, humor and an almost spiritual sense of beauty. His insights into the relationships between African and European and man and animal left me stunned and sad. I found the book incredibly moving. One of my favorite examples of Matthiessen's eloquence and insight comes while describing the prolonged death of a lioness:

"I was swept by a wave of feeling, then a pang so sharp that, for a moment, I felt sick, as if all the waste and loss in life, the harm one brings to oneself and others, had been drawn to a point in the lonely passage between light and darkness."

If you're interested in Africa, nature, or just beautiful prose, then you should read this book. If you read it with the care with which it was written, I'm certain you will not be disappointed.

It was OK, but...

I was very pleased at first to discover the hardback cover version. I was looking for inexpensive children's books to pair with stuffed animals to be given to other children as gifts for a literacy program. This book was a perfect match. When I opened it and found crayola scribbling on some of the pages, I was disappointed. The price was right [1-cent], but S&H was $3.99, making it not only a $4.00 disappointment but worthless. Returning it would have been silly, especially since that involved additional S&H. I believe I have used this seller before with better results. This time was disappointing.

Christmas Mouse Entertains

This is a cute book with charming illustrations. It almost appears to have two endings, but for the age it's intended, that shouldn't matter. It serves its purpose well - entertaining both children and adults. You don't often find books written and illustrated by the same person as this one is. I was pleased with my purchase.

A New Christmas "Must Have"

This is an excellent story for kids and parents! As wonderful as the story is, the illustrations are even better. My 2 1/2 year old wants me to read "the Santa book" every night before bed. I highly recommend this book for children of all ages. It will soon be a classic right along with The Night Before Christmas.

Get ready for Father's tears

I bought this book for my husband on behalf of our special needs daughter for father's day. He LOVED it. I saw him getting misty eyed because our daughter can't talk, walk, etc. She's like a baby & she can't buy anything but I wanted to get it for her and I signed her name in it, wrapped it up really pretty and sat it in her lap. He opened it carefully & his eyes got soooo big. Get this beautiful book. It's hardcover and very loving. Something like this will definitely open up the heart of the roughest man, especially if he's a father. I wish there were more saying in the book but the message overall is clear.

The rooster runs after the rich man, who tries to drown, burn, starve, and trample the rooster, but the fowl keeps finding a way out of each situation, growing larger as he swallows his enemy's treasure and cattle. The rooster finally regains the coin purse. He returns to the old man, who greets him with joy, and the two live richly, and happily ever after. The fast-paced action and a repeated refrain ("Cucurigu, my great lord!/Give back the pennies you stole") will grab readers' attention. The language flows smoothly and reads aloud well. The large folk-art paintings, done in watercolors and colored pencils, depict brightly clothed characters, detailed backdrops, and a hero who grows in stature along with his deeds.-Janet M. Adapting her tale from a Romanian story by Ion Creanga, Rascol tells about a small, brave rooster, driven from the farmyard, who grows powerful as he defeats an evil nobleman and brings riches back home to the poor farmer. The greedy nobleman tries everything to get rid of the pesky upstart. He throws the rooster down a well, but the rooster drinks all the water and flies out. He tosses the bird in a fiery oven, but the rooster spews out all the water he drank and puts out the flames. The rooster swallows coins, and he swallows the barnyard animals. Finally, he brings everything home to make the poor farmer rich. The standoffs, chases, and the refrain ("What could the rooster do?") are great for storytellers, and the clear, dramatic, very bright pictures in folk-art style, showing the small creature swelling up until he fills the double-page spread, can be used with a small group. Children will appreciate the farmyard farce about the small, noisy creature who refuses to be intimidated in a giant world. Hazel Rochman

Rich language and artwork

Beginning with the middle word in its title, The Impudent Rooster contains language that challenges, entertains, and doesn't talk down to children. The rooster's poor master is "humiliated" by his poverty; the scolded rooster "lurched" through the gate; he meets a nobleman who had "amassed" his wealth dishonestly. The rich words are matched by detailed folk art which perfectly captures the beauty and flavor of rural Romania, a country I lived in for nine years. The rooster even crows in Romanian-"Cucurigu!" This book is a great cultural experience and a wholesome, fun read, and that's why I'm buying copies as gifts for friends and family.

Wonderful story, exquisite illustrations

This is a great classic Romanian story, every child in Romania knows it as "Punguta cu doi bani" ( The two penny purse). It is a wonderful story of courage and determination.
This edition is astonishing, especially for the beautiful illustrations!
Every page in the book is so meticulously researched: authentic Romanian folk costumes,landscapes,houses, traditional designs of pottery! So many beautiful surprises! At the same time it is whimsical enough to attract the attention of little kids!
The text is enticing for 4-10 year olds and close to the original story, makes for a great gift!
Wonderful team, illustrator and storyteller,

Must have for classic Pooh lovers!

I made a small piglet from this book when I was in elementary school. The directions in making the miniature stuffed animals are easy to follow. And the result is just stunning and adorable. You might be able to find it in the library, but if you are a classic Pooh fanatic, you gotta have this book on your shelf!

Splendid craft book for Winnie the Pooh figures

I found this book online before our first grandchild was born, made all the figures and assembled them into a mobile for above her changing table. The patterns and directions are fantastic and the results were wonderful. I admire the skill of the originator of the patterns because they are accurate to a mm. Since the some of the figures are so small, that is essential to make everything work correctly. I just finished a second mobile for our expected second grandchild who I hope enjoys it as much as our five year old does. Well worth the effort to find the book and use it.

Great patterns

I have been looking for patterns of pooh and his friends for a while. I was very excited when I saw this book, especially since it involved the use of felt, which is my preferred medium. I have constructed the pooh and he looks like pooh! I am in the process of constructing tigger, but am not done. The patterns are easy to follow and the animals (at least pooh) have been easy to create.

Marvellous but mixed collection of poetry

Everyone who has read Milne's original Pooh books knows that he can write a good hum, after all Pooh gives us several.
In this volume (and the earlier "When We Were Very Young") Milne's voice comes through more clearly, unmoderated by writing for his bear of little brain. He gives us a small volume full of poems that should surely last as well as his prose. While some of them are strongly flavoured by the time and place where he wrote them others are more universal in their subject and tone.
As you read this volume you will almost certainly come across something you recognise, if it isn't the line "James James Morrison Morrison Weatherby George Dupree" that catches your memory then it might be "Just a bit of butter for the royal slice of bread." If not, then you will find many of them sticking when you have read them to a child.
I have seen editions of this volume without the illustrations by E.H. Shepard, it would seem to me a travesty to separate the two. Shepard has always been the traditional illustrator of Milne and the pen and ink drawings he made for the first edition of this book, retained in this (and most) paperback edition are marvellous - well executed and suiting the style and subject of the poems.
It is hard to overstate the joy my daughter and I have had from this volume. My mother read many of these poems to me thirty five (and more) years ago, over the past few years my daughter and I have discovered our own favourites. Now she is old enough that she reads them herself.
The poems are indeed a little sentimental, a little whimsical and seem to come from a softer, more pastoral childhood than has perhaps existed for many years. I don't see this as a problem for the poetry, after all, if we cannot recreate a gentler time for our children perhaps we can soften the one we can provide with the tiny charming tales in these poems.
I would recommend this book to anyone with a small child. I give it only four stars as the poems are mixed in quality.

Perfect for the 6-year-old and the 60-year-old in all of us

There is nothing truly profound you can say about a book like this, or, for that matter, its predecessor WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG. These are simply short and very sweet books of children's poetry. They can be read to a child (perhaps one of the best introductions to poetry a youngster could receive) or read by an adult who is mature enough to truly apprectiate classic children's literature and poetry.

A.A. Milne was a literary genius - that much is certain. If he wanted to write books consisting of classic and intellectual poetry, he certainly could have and would have. But his aims were much higher than that. He wanted to reach out to children and adults everywhere. He wanted to show that childhood innocence never has to end (see the last few lines of the last chapter of THE HOUSE AT POOH CORNER). And unlike so many writers who (perhaps with the best of intentions) attempt this amazing feat, Milne succeeded.

I'm buying this book now for my daughter. I still remember many of the poems from when I was growing up, and I hear my Mom's voice as I read them.

This book recreates a complex case that claimed nine lives, one of the more shocking crimes of recent years. The links in all the deaths were Susan Lynch and her cousin Fritz Klenner, each from a prominent, upper-middle-class Southern family. The murders began with the shootings of Lynch's ex-mother-in-law and ex--sister-in-law in Kentucky, and continued with the slayings of her parents and grandmother in North Carolina. What connected the killings was the bitter divorce between Susie and her husband Tom, and the impending custody battle for their children, particularly since it became increasingly clear that Susie regarded the boys as pawns in a power struggle. The deaths that she prepared for her two sons, and which inadvertently killed her and Klenner as well, provide a dramatic climax to this account of families too blind to realize that well-bred folk can be dangerous. Bledsoe wrote an award-winning series about the case in 1985 in the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record. Photos not seen by PW. BOMC, QPBC and Mystery Book Club alternates.

Admirably researched and well-written...

This thoroughly researched account of a family ravaged by the brutal and systematic murders of nine members by two of its own is a deeply disturbing revelation of ties that bind and blind. The tragedy is further amplified by the culture of secrecy and political self-interest at the highest level of North Carolina law enforcement. A lengthy yet compelling read that I recommend to those who enjoy true accounts and exploration of human compulsions.

Best book I've ever read

I have read nearly 200 true crime books, and this is easily the best one ever. Jerry Bledsoe is an incredible author. This book is very long and covers lots of history and detail. The author goes back in time and reviews the life stories of all the relatives of the major players, and by the time they all come together, you understand and appreciate exactly what is going on. Many readers do not like books with a lot of history, but this one is done so incredibly well and it really adds to the emotion of the story once the tragedies begin. This story involves several large families with very prominent members. You watch as people change gradually, but nothing can prepare you for the final tragedy. The book is written from the perspective of an unknown character at first, which makes you want to read and read until all your questions are answered. The story is thrilling, except for the fact that it was true which makes it so heartbreaking. I have read this book 3 times already, I have given it as a gift to all my friends who read true crime, I have read every book written by Jerry Bledsoe (although there are not nearly enough), and I have loved them all. I highly recommend this book to any true crime fan.

Overcooked!

"Bitter Bloood" tells the story of two separate murders, one in Kentucky and one in North Carolina that turn out to be "related". I won't give the ending away in a review-suffiice it to say that author Bledsoe unravels the murders and puts them together again in a cohesive and interesting fashion. That is the good news. The bad news is that he required 573 pages, in relatively small type, to do so. This is a looong read!! Major detriments to the tale are the lengthy personal and geographical background settings Bledsoe employs. This helps the reader identify with the characters and locales but greatly adds to the time and effort required to stay abreast of the plot. Better editing, if any serious "editing" is actually done these days, should have shortened "BB" with no negative effect. One has to give Bledsoe his due on one point: He obviously put an enormous amount of work and research into "BB". I can visualize him working and reworking chapters, checking interview transcripts, notes, etc. The result is a very credible piece of true crime writing, which overcomes the rather strange cast of characters. I can only wish Bledsoe had taken a "less is more" approach and "filed" some of his material. True crime devotees and residents of the Winston-Salem/Greensboro NC corridor can safely ignore the negative points in this review. I still plan to buy another Bledsoe work because I respect any writer who works as hard as he ovviously does. A final word: Follow the "Ann Rule rule" and skip over the centerfold photos until the book is finished.

Still hoping to find the bunny, she peers inside the wheelbarrow, totally ignoring the live infant to rejoice at the sight of the stuffed bunny the child holds in its arms. The appealing illustrations parade snow white Minerva Louise through a series of scenes filled with bright, familiar objects that children will instantly recognize, allowing them to be a step ahead of Minerva and in on the joke. Another adventure of the amiable, feather-brained hen (Minerva Louise at School, 1996, etc.) relies on the same premise as its predecessors: Minerva Louise visits a strange environment--this time a household where there is a new baby--but her perceptions are entirely bound by the limits of her barnyard experiences. Seeing an empty crib, she identifies it as a rabbit hutch and begins searching for the ``new bunny'' that must live there. And Minerva always manages to find what she's looking for in the end--much to the delight of listeners who have been laughing all along at her blithe efforts to make sense of the world by force-fitting it into the only categories she knows. Large, simple shapes and bold, flat colors inside soft black outlines are composed into pictures as light-hearted and charming as the tale. Hilarious and reminiscent of Amelia Bedelia

My five year old brought this book home in his nightly reading bag yesterday. We read it no less than three times and then he read it some more to himself after I put him to bed. It's a great book with well-drawn pictures and a funny story. The last page had us rolling. Now I see that there are other Minerva Louise books out there! We can't wait to read them!

I Love Minerva Louise!

Minerva Louise is so wonderfully drawn and cleverly written that I could read this and her other books to my son every night. I absolutely love this chicken, and the myriad adventures she takes. My son and I laugh every time Minerva Louise mistakes a common item for something a chicken might use, and get a kick out of correcting her. Just a great book.
