A Cast of Killers, by Sidney D. Kirkpatrick

On February 1, 1922, the distinguished silent-film director William Desmond Taylor was shot to death in his Los Angeles bungalow by an unknown assailant. Reports of strange activities at the scene of the crime circulated soon after. When the police arrived, was the head of Paramount Studios burning a bundle of papers in the fireplace, and was a well-known actress searching the house for letters she claimed were hers? Despite a full-scale investigation, the case was never solved; for sixty years is has remained a lingering Hollywood scandal. In 1967, more than forty years after Taylor's death, the great King Vidor, whose directing credits include Northwest Passage, The Fountainhead, Duel in the Sun, and War and Peace, determined to solve the mystery, which had haunted him throughout his career, in order to make a film about it. Through his intimate knowledge of both the studios and the stars, he succeeded, where dozens of professional detectives had failed, in discovering the identity of the murderer. But because his findings were so explosive, he decided he could never go public and locked his evidence away. After Vidor's death in 1982, Sidney D. Kirkpatrick, Vidor's authorized biographer, gained access to the evidence and reconstructed the amazing story of Taylor's murder and Vidor's investigation. With a cast of suspects that includes the actress Mabel Normand, a reputed drug addict; the beautiful ingénue, Mary Miles Minter; Mary's domineering mother, Charlotte Shelby; Taylor's homosexual houseman; and Taylor's secretary, who bore an uncanny resemblance to Taylor's mysteriously elusive brother, this true crime story has all the elements of a classic murder mystery. Covered up for more than half a century, the full story can now be told in all its riveting, shocking detail.

As he was researching his "official" biography of King Vidor, the late film director, Kirkpatrick made the discovery on which this true crime story is built. Vidor, planning to make a movie about William Desmond Taylor, murdered in 1922, set out to investigate the unsolved crime 45 years later. Taylor had been a famous director of silents and his death was a sensation that ruined the careers of actresses Mary Miles Minter, Mabel Normand (the victim's reputed lovers) and other Hollywood luminaries. Kirkpatrick skillfully leads the reader into Vidor's search as the director studies old files and questions people in the movie colony who remembered those involved in the tragedy. The result is a riveting mystery. In his dramatic reconstruction, Kirkpatrick uncovers Vidor's convincing evidence, never disclosed by the director, that Taylor was killed by the mother of ingenue Minter. From Library Journal
In 1922, Hollywood film director William Desmond Taylor was murdered, and the crime was never officially solved. In 1967, the late director King Vidor decided to investigate the mystery in order to make a film about it. (No film resulted.) Kirkpatrick recounts the story of Vidor's sleuthing, which uncovered scandal, corruption, coverups, and, ultimately, Vidor believed, the identity of the killer. This is a well-researched book, breezily related, whose impact is lessened somewhat by digressions into Vidor's personal life. The combination of Hollywood and murder is likely to be popular. Murder and Alvarado Street
By Bobby Underwood
King Vidor was a legendary film director largely forgotten by Hollywood at the time of his death. Sydney Kirkpatrick came to Vidor's home after his death to research a well deserved biography but instead discovered a buried box full of dynamite. In the box were notes for a planned project which was to be the director's comeback film. But the explosive nature of his findings had prompted Vidor to bury it, literally.

This book is based on what Kirkpatrick found in that box. It is full of mystery and murder, love and lust, and in the end, sadness at the solving of one of the most famous and sensational scandels in the history of tinsletown. It is a mesmerizing journey into the early days of Hollywood and the lengths it would go to to cover up its secrets.

In 1922 the murder of director William Desmond Taylor was so filled with scandel it ruined careers and nearly destroyed Hollywood. If the absolute truth had been known, it might have. King Vidor had been a part of this Hollywood in its formative years and planned to make his comeback film by telling the story of it. Kirkpatrick could have turned this into a pulp type expose but instead, and to his credit, takes a respectful and nostalgic tone, both for Vidor and a time gone by. He uses Vidor's notes and findings to let this murder mystery unfold just as it did for Vidor.

For every film buff with a fascination for old Hollywood this is a book you can't put down. It is juicy but never tawdry, Vidor sifting through the misinformation of Hollywood and the corruption of the police to slowly get a picture of the truth he himsef couldn't yet tell because some of the players were still alive. The homicide and the aftermath is filled with names like Mabel Normand, Alan Dwan, James Kirkwood, Gloria Swanson, Claire Windsor, and Charlette Shelby and her waif like daughter Mary Miles Minter, an early rival of Mary Pickford.

Vidor's reputation and the fact he had been a part of this Hollywood way back when gave him weight and would prompt many to open up and talk to Vidor in a way in which they would not have to someone else. He would even get to look at police files that would contradict most of what was reported at the time, raising even more questions.

As Vidor plays detective in order to write the screenplay that he hoped would put him back on top, Kirkpatrick lets us see a man who was once a vital part of the film industry, fighting to be remembered. During his investigation he would come into contact with old flame Coleen Moore, a lovely silent star with a fine career of her own. It was a happy coincidence and would force Vidor to make decisions affecting the rest of his life.

A Cast of Killers is a fun, fast read tinged with sadness, King Vidor somehow knew it would be. Before beginning, the legendary director likened it to an old bottle of wine. If you love a good mystery, and or Hollywood, this is one you have to read.

"I realized it was vintage stuff-the rarest vintage of all: a murder that has never been solved. One opens such a bottle at his own peril."
King Vidor, 1967

True story that reads like a novel
By Popeye Arms
I thoroughly enjoyed this book filled with great names from the silent film era. The Taylor murder presents a tangled web of intrigue that fascinates to this very day.

Greatly improved over the original edition.
By A Customer
Edited Review: By correcting or qualifying most of the historical errors found in the 1986 edition, this twentieth anniversary edition has greater historical value, while losing none of the entertainment value of the original edition. I would now improve its rating if I could.

One hundred years ago, Teddy Roosevelt refused to shoot a helpless bear. A toy maker in Brooklyn honored the noble act by creating a plush, stuffed toy with movable arms and legs and a bright, bearish face. The teddy bear was born. A century later this bear has inspired beloved stories, a hit song, and numerous silly, sad, and loving poems, many of which are gathered here in a big, full-color treasury. The collection includes a chapter each from Winnie-the-Pooh and A Bear Called Paddington; the full text of Corduroy; poems by Shel Silverstein, Judith Viorst, A. A. Milne, and others; a song; and a lively illustrated history of the world's favorite toy.

This was a great book. It tells you everything from the history of teddy bears to little bear legends. I love teddy bears and found this book very interesting. My only complaint was that it was a tad short. If you love teddy bears then you'll love this book. It's great for any age to enjoy!

what a pleasure
By Susan G.
This book is a great read-aloud. My son was drawn to his "favorite" bears like Pooh and Paddington, then was happy to stick around and learn about actual, unusual teddy bears. We loved the story about the one on the Titanic.

This is a beautifully written and illustated book. Wonderful to read to toddlers and younger children and a treat for older children (of all ages). The Teddy Roosevelt story is worth the whole book.

From Publishers Weekly
"Since that time, people have had to hunt for their meat, plant their vegetables, and work in this world." Although this may sound startlingly like the banishment of a certain First Couple, "two bad boys" are to blame for this human condition, according to Haley's well-told version of a Cherokee tale. In the beginning of time, a boy's reflection in a pond springs to life. This new brother, Wild Boy, tempts the formerly obedient Boy into mischief. They discover the cave of animals from which their father sparingly hunts; they accidentally release all the animals. They find the hut from which their mother gathers abundant vegetables; they try to take some and the hut vanishes. Thereafter they and their progeny must hunt and farm vegetables to survive. Caldecott Medalist Haley's (A Story, A Story) retelling is crystal-clear, conscientiously researched and handsomely illustrated in earth-toned acrylics. Her careful compositions, essentially realistic but lightly infused with mysticism, subtly evoke a paradise lost. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6?In the Cherokee version of Eden, First Hunter, Corn Mother, and their son enjoy foodwithout working for it. Boy is lonely, and one day sees another child beneath the surface of the river looking up at him. Each morning, Wild Boy comes out of the river to play; eventually Boy's parents capture him and take him home. They cannot tame him, however. The youngsters' mischief escalates until they discover the sources of their family's meat and corn and cause them to vanish. The boys feel hunger, their parents depart, and their willful independence compels them?and all their descendants?to work for their food. Like Genesis, this tale acknowledges the punishing aspect of labor, the human tendency to curiosity and meddling, and the adolescent desire for self-sufficiency. Here, however, the ungovernable impulse to follow one's own will is recognized as a wild, undomesticated side of the self: Freud's id anticipated. Haley's illustrations, each bordered by a narrow geometric band, depict the figures with strongly modeled forms. Despite the stylized treatment of certain animals and plants, the overall effect is realistic. The Cherokee have appropriately ethnic features, and the few objects (baskets, tools, ornaments) around them convey a sense of their culture. Against a golden background, touches of teal and green stand out. The presentation is culturally specific, but the story's themes have a universal and timeless resonance.?Patricia (Dooley) Lothrop Green, St. George's School, Newport, RI

From Kirkus Reviews
From Haley (Mountain Jack Tales, 1992, etc.), an engrossing story, subtitled ``A Very Old Cherokee Tale,'' complete with author's note, that mirrors the Christian creation myth and explains how labor came into the world. The first family--Kanati the First Hunter, Selu the Corn Mother, and Boy--live an idyllic life until Boy gets lonely. His reflection in a pool of water becomes Wild Boy, his untamed alter ego and trouble-making playmate. They spy on their father's hunting secrets, but when they try to hunt, all the animals escape from the cave, leading the boys into a life-long search for them. When they find out where their mother gets corn and beans, she destroys the source, and they are forced to grow their own food. The transgression of moral authority and the dual nature of existence are themes which have echoes throughout western literature; this Cherokee legend confirms the universality of human nature. From another perspective...
By A Customer
This book does parallel the Genesis creation myth, yes, because this book is an interpretation of a Cherokee myth by a woman of Christian background and knowledge-base. Within some Cherokee communities this book is even seen as a MISinterpretation, a retelling which misses the point of the tale when it's told in context and without changing important details, which Ms. Haley has done.
She is a successful author, with books from several different European-based cultures in her repertoire. However, in taking this Native American story, making changes, and then filtering it through traditional Western sensibilities, she has done a great injustice. The original tale, which I highly recommend all readers to find (it's not difficult), is not about transgression and punishment of the human race for all time through forced labor. Some of the lessons which may be gleaned from the original tale are about learning from our human mistakes, seeking to make the proper amends when we should, and finding forgiveness and acceptance, even abundance, when we do the right things. I suggest readers to find the REAL story of Selu and Kanati, and take their own lessons from what they find. Don't buy this book.

A Different Perspective
By Library Gaga
I view this book differently from the other reviewer. What I get from reading this book is not an abbreviated version of the Selu and Kanati tale, but a portion of it. Being a children's picture book, therefore, not very long or complex, the author has chosen to relate only part of the whole story. I don't see it as a misrepresentation, but a segment. And that segment, while reminding some readers of the Adam and Eve story, reminded me more of the Pandora's Box myth, when all the world's evils were let out of the box.

Meanwhile, the artwork is superb and contributes quite effectively to an enjoyable experience. I would buy this book, knowing it isn't a scholarly treatise and was not written as such.

Wonderful little book
By J. Austin
I love this cookbook. Around the holidays, I usually make a big batch of various cookies to take to work. Last year, I used many of the recipes found in the book and received rave reviews. The recipes are absolutely delicious and the illustrations make this an absolutely delightful little book. I highly recommend it.

a musthave for cookie bakers
By A Customer
I love to cook, especially cookies. So I have lots of cookie cookbooks. This one is relatively small, but it is the one I pick up the most when I want to bAke cookies. I use it all the time. I love the Chewy Chocalte-Chocolate Chunk Cookies. They're soooo good! And not only is this cookbook great because of its recipes, but it also has the cute and funny character of Winnie-the-Pooh. So if you love good cookies, i urge you to but this book.

excellent gift for a baby shower.
By Sandra H Elston
I am expecting my 2nd great-grandchild in June,2000. Gave this book to my granddaughter at her baby shower and was immediately given the biggest hug and a loud YES! I had given it to my other granddaughter for her baby shower and they had shared the one book, now she has her own copy. Don't know who likes the cookies better, thee or me..I of course have my own copy and use it many times in a monthly period."Honey Madelines" are excellent. Christopher Robin's Button Cookies are just the right size for those little hands.Extremely well written and very consice and most importantly so easy..Chocolate Crisps are so good with either milk or tea. I'm going to buy several more copies to keep on hand for those baby showers to come.

Entertaining, if not terribly deep.
By Stephen Mackey
Excepting the mercifully brief but irritatingly obvious authorial self-insert, the story's pretty well done and amusing, and certainly creative. The reading level is pretty simple and basic, but doesn't treat the reader like an idiot, either, and has a fair amount of Britishisms scattered about in tidbits. The pictures are sparse but vivid when you do come upon them, and certainly help visualization. A good read for people who like fantasy and are children, or who have childish hearts.

Borders that resemble homespun cloth, stone-carved edging or plant patterns frame each page of this brief anthology of Americana. Songs (including "On Top of Old Smokey," "Clementine" and "Yankee Doodle") are placed between a few stories that represent various regions of the country (North Carolina, New England, Appalachia), and some of varied ethnic origins (Black American, Pueblo Indian, Puerto Rican). The songs are familiar, but the stories only vaguely so; readers may find Durell's choices refreshingly original. Goode's invigorating illustrations have many moods: serene for "Buffalo Gal," joyful for "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot," outright wacky for "Wait Till Martin Comes." If there is one quibble, it is that the book is far too short; readers are left wishing, happily, for more. Ages 4-10.

Diane goode Book
By A Customer
It is a nice book, but it wasn't what was expected. When it said, Folk tales and songs, I thought they would be related and the storeis would be about the songs tht are included. Since that is what I was hoping to get, I was disappointed in that.
The stories are cute, but not really great ones to read aloud to others, in my opinion.
Enough said.

The Fortune-Tellers, by Lloyd Alexander

After revealing the future to a young carpenter, a fortune-teller disappears, and the young man attempts to fill the shoes of the real seer, with hilarious results for himself and the villagers, in an African tale set in a small Cameroonian town.

From Publishers Weekly
The hands of fate deftly propel this original folktale. A seedy fortune-teller profits from gullible and sometimes desperate villagers who seek predictions for a rosier future. One unhappy carpenter takes to heart the seer's hardly helpful advice--"Rich you will surely be, on one condition: that you earn large sums of money"--and looks forward to a prosperous life. Most surprising to the craftsman, he ends up in the right place at the right time and the prediction comes true. Alexander's chipper text has a jaunty and infectious "just so" tone. Amazing coincidences fuse the plot elements, but the story's logic remains intact, successfully suspending the reader's disbelief. Hyman's acrylic, ink and crayon illustrations capture the landscape and people of West Africa in vivid detail. Indigenous plants and animals--including comically placed lizards--dot each scene, and the villagers' lushly textured apparel is spectacular. Especially opulent are spreads featuring the fortune-teller's cluttered quarters and the market stalls with their baskets and pottery. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-4-- A young carpenter, tired of hammering and sawing, seeks out a fortune-teller to see what his future holds. The cagey old prophet promises him a rosy future--well, maybe. `` `Rich you will surely be,' '' says the fortune-teller, if `` `you earn large sums of money.' '' Moreover, `` `You shall wed your true love . . . if you find her and she agrees. And you shall be happy as any in the world if you can avoid being miserable.' '' Pleased with these promising, if ambiguous, predictions, the carpenter leaves, only to get halfway home and decide he has more questions to ask. But the fortune-teller has mysteriously vanished, leaving the carpenter in the quirky hand of fate where, in typical Alexander fashion, his life takes a surprising and humorous turn. The story's warm and witty tone is reinforced by Hyman's masterful illustrations. Expressive figures are dynamically placed against a West African landscape, in colors so rich and clear that they invite readers to touch the fabrics and breathe the air. Visual details--carved wooden stools, traditional cloth patterns, signs in French--add an authenticity to the story (which is actually set in Cameroon), while touches of humor in postures and expressions underscore Alexander's gentle wit. These illustrations are obviously a labor of love. Vibrant with life and good humor, this is a supremely satisfying creation. --Linda Boyles, Alachua County Library District, Gainesville, FL

magical tale with a sly sense of humor
By waldorf_curric
Lloyd Alexander is so incredibly talented; I was thrilled when I stumbled upon this children's book, previously unknown to me. The Fortune-tellers is a story of an old fraud whose prophesies for every customer are identical and very tongue-in-cheek. For example, the young man who comes to hear his fortune is told that he will become rich provided he can earn a lot of money, live a long life assuming it is not cut short by an early demise, and will marry his true love on the condition that he meets her, proposes to her, and she accepts him. The young carpenter is overjoyed by the good news of his future and runs back with more questions; however, he finds the room empty and when others come in, they assume that he is the fortune-teller transformed into a younger body. As the carpenter had been wishing for another trade, he takes the place of the old man, giving out the same advice which had been given to him. When this advice proves very popular he, in fact, achieves the wealth, happiness, and long life which had been "foretold" and often thinks fondly of the man who had seen the future so clearly. We learn of the fate of the real fortune-teller as well, who fell out of a window and spent the remainder of his life plagued by troubles. The humour in this story is great and will be enjoyed the most by older elementary or middle-school children who "get" the jokes.

I can't finish this review without commenting on the wonderful illustrations. The Caldecott medal-winning illustrator, Trina Schart Hyman, based them on her travels to Cameroon and they are truly exquisite. Rich and full of detail, each page is tapestry of colors and textures. This story is a perfect teaching tool and is a window for children onto the beauty of Africa and the bountiful humor and wisdom of its people. An entire unit could be developed from identifying and learning more about the foods, household items, clothing and fabrics, buildings, professions, landscape and animals shown in the amazing paintings found in this book. Even if you aren't able to develop such a unit, this book is an excellent choice to build interest and begin a discussion about West Africa.

Love it! Bought a copy, got it signed!
By A Customer
Hardcover, that is. This book has a place of honor in my small collection of picture books (I'm usually more of a chapter book person). The thing that really amazes me about it is that it's so universal it could have been set anywhere. Trina did a lovely job setting it in Cameroon, with her daughter's husband's family and their baby populating the illustrations. In one picture you can also see Lloyd Alexander sitting at a table in the background, with a vulture (or two?) perched above him (I hear he's a hypochondraic from way back). Trina and her ex-husband are also in the same picture.

A fortunate pairing
By E. R. Bird
I don't know how author Lloyd Alexander and illustrator Trina Schart Hyman found one another for this book. Perhaps Mars was rising in the Pisces and all the stars were in correct alignment when it happened. Perhaps it was predicted by a seer decades before it could actually occur. Or maybe it was just one of those strokes of luck that produce books of pure perfection without ever meaning to. Whatever the reason, in the end their collaborative "The Fortune Tellers" is what you would expect of two geniuses. It is perfect.
The story concerns a young man who wishes to seek his fortune and escape the drudgery of carpentry. After visiting a fortune teller the young man is convinced he will someday attain wealth, love, and long life. But on returning to the fortune teller's lair later, he finds the old man gone and people mistaking HIM for a fortune teller. In the end, he gains everything he ever wanted by telling people a caveat-laden series of predictions.
The story is nice and funny. It's told well and children will get the key to the fortunes easily on their own. But honestly, this book could have been made or broken by its illustrator. In the wrong hands it could easily have gone beyond poorly drawn into offensive. Therefore, we should all give a great big sigh of relief that it was instead placed in the capable and multi-talent hands of Ms. Hyman.
Basing her pictures in Cameroon (a land where her son-in-law was originally from), Hyman has produced a plethora of drop-dead gorgeous drawings. Says Hyman in her bio about this creation, the book is illustrated with her, "memories of the incredible beauty, strength, and diversity of the landscape and people of Cameroon". Certainly the landscapes are lovely. From fields of grassland, mountain ranges, and wooded boulevards it stuns. But I was most taken with the people in this book. Honestly, I don't know how Hyman did it. Every single woman in this book is wearing several different printed cloths. Every man is different from every other. Every baby completely easy to distinguish from every other. If you want to be blown away, you don't even have to open the darned book. Just turn it over and look at the group of ten people standing on the back cover. From the coy baby to the pair of brothers to the girls that regard the viewer with matter-of-fact eye contact, I was just stunned. And I haven't even begun to tell you about the millions of tiny details in EVERY single picture. There are hundreds of things to discover. For example, the old fortune teller owns a French to English dictionary propped up in his bed. Small lizards are identifiable in almost every picture if you care to seek them out. Observe also the interactions between friends and neighbors. Amazing.
My words are inadequate. This book deserves every drop of attention you have to spare. Kids will love it. Adults will feast their eyes on every scene. It is the most beautiful of Hyman's creations, and truly an effective labor of love. I adore this book.

From Publishers Weekly
William Steig, Maurice Sendak, Karla Kuskin, Rosemary Wells, Mitsumasa Anno, Jerry Pinkney and others 14 in all discuss their work in Ways of Telling: Conversations on the Art of the Picture Book by Leonard S. Marcus. This engaging volume offers insight into the creative process of each author and illustrator as well as the social and political contexts from which their work emerged. Ages 11-up.
Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
"A picture book is a dialogue between two worlds: the world of images and the world of words," says the author in his introduction to this remarkable glimpse into the work of 14 creative people. The dialogue is also between the adult artist and/or writer and the child audience, and Marcus illuminates the art form through his own dialogues with picture-book creators. In conversations that took place from 1988 to 1999, he draws out stories that will fascinate anyone who appreciates the impact of a successful picture book. Readers learn about early influences on the artists that affected their later work, as well as childhood memories and family interactions. We hear in the words of Maurice Sendak, Robert McCloskey, and James Marshall how they perceived the picture book as a theatrical piece, a stage on which action unfolds. We learn of connections they make to earlier artists, of Eric Carle's homage to the brilliance of Margaret Wise Brown and the help he received from Leo Lionni. It is obvious that Marcus carefully prepared for each conversation and extensively studied each body of work to elicit provocative insights. From Mitsumasa Anno to Charlotte Zolotow, readers will find compelling stories to fascinate anyone who studies, uses, loves, or is puzzled by some of the most compelling picture books of the last half century. Ways of Telling is a highly readable, often humorous, and intensely rewarding book for novices and seasoned professionals alike.

Great compilation of early New World texts
By James Cook
Consisting of an introductory essay by Dahlberg himself and several excerpts from early books on North American history, mainly dealing with American Indian myth, this is a wonderful book, and a great introduction to these rarely read authors. Dahlberg's essay finds him in fine form, weaving beautiful sentences full of folklore, legend and poetry. Its a companion piece of sorts to the second section of his earlier book, The Sorrows of Priapus. Of the other works included, the highlights are the excerpt from Peter Martyr, giving one of the earliest accounts of the New World, and the excerpt from Daniel Brinton's excellent The Myths of the New World, after the reading of which I found a copy of the complete text to savor. This is a great book which will send you searching for more.

Terrific

This is a terrific children's book that we enjoyed with our son and daughter a decade ago. Themes are friendship and finding a home. Illustrations are excellent. I was stunned to find it is out of print when I sought it for a friend who is adopting a baby girl.

A little gem!
By Patricia Stringer
This wonderful children's book enchants with its illustrations, but captures the heart with is tale of finding friends in high, and highly unexpected, places.

Mouse escapes from a New York City pet shop in seatch of a "real home" and
finds himself in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Although he loves his
beautiful new surroundings he is rejected by the cathdral's resident mice.

All is not lost, though. He settles on a high pillar that somehow provides him with
bread and cheese. Eventually, he discovers where his meals are coming from, and
learns to trust a stone carver who provides him with the home he's always wanted.

A sweet, charming tale for children of all ages.
