About the Author
Ann B. Ross holds a doctorate in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and has taught literature at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. She is the author of sixteen previous novels featuring the popular southern heroine Miss Julia, as well as Etta Mae's Worst Bad-Luck Day, a novel about one of Abbotsville's other most outspoken residents: Etta Mae Wiggins. Ann Ross lives in Hendersonville, North Carolina.

Miss Julia Is At It Again!

I absolutely adore Ann Ross's 'Miss Julia' books! When a new one comes out, I can't wait to dive in and settle down. Hilarious fun. Ms. Ross insists she is not a funny person, but she sure does write funny books. Miss Julia is a wonder and always manages to find herself the most impossible predicaments. The cast of characters are always wonderful: Sam, Lillian, Etta Mae Wiggins, Hazel Marie, JD, Little Lloyd, LuAnne, Pastor Ledbetter, Mildred, and the list goes on. I love these people! I hate to see a Miss Julia book end.

Book 17 - Where there's a will there's a way...and a headache.

Reading this 17th installment in the “Miss Julia” series was a lot like spending the afternoon with an old friend – at the end of the day you realize that although nothing much happened, you’ve enjoyed yourself immensely!
Julia is at her wit’s end trying to carry out the final wishes of an elderly acquaintance. While Miss Mattie has been most generous with her bequests, her estate (such as it is) will barely cover her final expenses. Unless Julia unearths a treasure amidst all the trinkets and trash littering Miss Mattie’s apartment she’ll have to contend with some mighty disgruntled beneficiaries. When a long lost relative pops up out of the blue Miss Julia smells ‘trouble’, and we all know how Julia feels about anyone trying to pull the wool over her eyes…
This was a fun read, though I was disappointed that many of the series regulars were absent in this installment. Still, there are some lovely moments with Lillian and Miss Julia and Etta Mae is delightful (as always). The plot is fairly thin, but the writing is a pure pleasure to read. Ann B. Ross writes clever dialog and her characters never fail to come to life on the page. I love the way she’s able to convey accents and mannerisms in such a way that I can completely picture these charming characters – it’s as if I’ve known them all my life!
As I came to the end of this book I had the sobering thought that in the nearly twenty years that I’ve followed this series Miss Julia hasn’t aged a day and I’m perilously close to becoming a “woman of a certain age”. Time may stand still in Abbotsville, but here in the real world there's no escaping Mother Nature. Sigh.
If you're new to the series then this is not the place to start. Do yourself a huge favor and pick up book one - Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind: A Novel.

Missed the usual friends, but still...

I've read all the Miss Julia books and I enjoyed this one too, but I have to say I missed some of the usual friends. Hazel Marie and Little Lloyd were just drive-by characters in this book, and their absence seemed odd. I kept waiting for them to be present at least as much as her neighbor Mildred was. But still, a good addition to the saga of Miss Julia's doings.
