Learning the alphabet is more fun when the setting is the Hundred Acre Wood. Familiar scenes from the Milne and Shepard classics introduce not only the concepts of letters and words, but also Pooh and his friends. This sturdy board book with an elegant, timeless look has been designed to attract the most discerning Pooh fans and to delight their favorite toddlers.

reS-Gr 1-Each letter of the alphabet is shown in uppercase and lowercase print with a line drawing of a person signing it. In the middle is a colorful illustration by Shepard chosen at random from one of Milne's books. Beneath that is another drawing of a person either signing or finger spelling the object, person, or action depicted. There is no consistency or relationship among the pictures. Few if any of the signs would be used by someone learning sign language, especially since some are proper names found only in the Milne books. The signed alphabet and numbers on the endpapers can readily be found elsewhere, so even that inclusion adds nothing to this pointless book. This attempt to cash in on Pooh's popularity is basically a sellout.

Ages 3-5. Short and sweet, this ABC picture book presents one word to a page, beginning with "Aa apple," which is accompanied by an illustration of Christopher Robin strolling along, eating an apple. The original ink drawings, now brightened with watercolor washes, appeared first in Winnie the Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, Now We Are Six, and When We Were Very Young. The words chosen for some of the letters may stretch the alphabet concept a bit ("yellow daffodils" for Y), and it's fair to say that only Milne fans will think that "expotition" is a great choice for X. Still, there are more than enough Winnie the Pooh lovers in the world to justify purchasing this book for public library collections. The format is clean and simple, and Shepard's artwork is as beguiling as ever. Carolyn Phelan

Winnie-the-Pooh's ABC
By Alice Gess
I love this book for the 2-1/2 year olds and older children to teach them the alphabet in a book medium.
I have been doing Child Care since 1983 and have used several curriculums for the teaching of my children. The children relate to Winnie the Pooh and recognize the alphabet letters at the same time.
They get their own book. It's left in their drawer at my home and take it out at free time and go through the book at their leisure. When it is time for school work they get their own book from their drawer and we sit at the table and each child gets a turn saying the letter a loud.
This teaches them responsibility of caring for books and learning how to read a book. The alphabet is just a plus.
When I first came across this book I liked it because it was not complicated with text, children do not really care about. I bought it as another way for teaching the alphabet letters with Winnie the Pooh. This has worked for me since 1996. The older books did not have the American Sign Language in it. I love these newer versions because I also teach ASL in my Day Care and the children are reminded of their letters in another medium.
When the children know their alphabet letters they are free to take home their book and keep it. This is a great and in-expensive reward from me to them. They value their book and accomplishments as well. This also takes the pressure off the slower learners.
I am very happy with this book for my Day Care.

Nice, large, sturdy ABC board book
By BostonMama
I tend to avoid what I think of as "knock off" books-- I'll buy the original Miss Spider, but not a silly "count to ten" board book with Miss Spider, and so forth. So, my initial reaction to a "Pooh" ABC book was kind of negative. However, there are not a lot of board books out there for younger children that are also ABC books and are large enough for their little hands to hold and look at the pictures. This book combined the classic book aspect that I look for in children's books, with the practicality of a pretty large board book with ABC's. If I had to criticize something, it would be that some of the pictures are not very bright in color, but that is something that you always encounter with Classic Pooh-- the illustrations are beautiful, and the colors are subdued, making them pretty, but perhaps not as engaging. Then again, I tend to think children are over-stimulated enough so soothing pictures can be nice for once. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a nice, sturdy ABC board book.

Excellent Early Learning Book!
By Kathryn S. McGlothlin
Great early ABC book. My college degree is in Elementary Education, so I am very particular about ABC and 1-2-3 books. The letters need to look "normal" not oddly shaped or strangely colored. They also don't need to be overwhelmed by the pictures on the pages. Many ABC and 1-2-3 books have this problem - they try to "trick it up" too much. This book delivers simplicity and quality. Simple, clear letters with simple, clear pictures. Great for starting toddlers on the path to learning their letters.
