From Library Journal
The Amos 'n' Andy show was the most successful and most controversial radio and TV program ever produced about black people. From its inception in 1928 when two white men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll wrote, produced, and played the main characters, the program was attacked as being demeaning to blacks in characterizing them as lazy, shiftless, and objects of humorous scorn. The authors of this study are ambivalent in much of their commentary, pointing out that the long-running series was extraordinarily popular among all races well into the 1950s. At that point new racial attitudes spelled the end of Amos 'n' Andy as less stereotyped and more sophisticated shows such as I Spy and The Bill Cosby Show portrayed blacks more realistically. A good choice for public libraries. Samuel Simons, Memorial Hall Lib., Andover, Mass.

Interesting But Inadequate
By Mediaman
This somewhat incomplete look at the history of Amos 'n' Andy has some interesting aspects (quotes from an interview with Richard Correll and an episode guide with descriptions) but it just barely touches the surface of the program and its controversy. Instead it's one-third a history of black entertainment (going back to the early 1800's!), one-third the program's radio history and one-third about the TV show.
The writers toss out facts then fail to provide any perspective or explanation. So the radio show went from NBC to CBS to NBC to CBS--and after reading the book I still have no idea why. They also don't adequately address one of the main problems with the TV series--that Amos is barely on it! Why? We don't know. They don't even put a picture of Amos on the cover of this book! So there are lots of holes and the publication has a rushed feel to it, like it was poorly researched and not well edited.
Co-authored by Bart Andrews, who did a book on I Love Lucy, it's not very well written and gets some information wrong. For example, it claims when the television version started in 1951 that comedies were all done live and only dramas were filmed for TV, which is completely false. It also says Peoria is right by Rock Island (look at a map!) and claims that few radio shows successfully transitioned to TV (go back and check, guys, there are lots of them--including Lucy!). This, in addition to a lot of unnecessarily repetitive information and the same two or three publications quoted over and over, makes it a little frustrating to read.
It does a basic job of trying to raise the standard controversial issues regarding the series, even dissecting a couple episodes to prove that it was racist. However, it proves no such thing because the writers don't give enough examples and fail to do enough research. Every cast member quoted says it wasn't racist. Sometimes the writers say that the TV series was just entertainment like any other show that portrayed buffoonish characters but then they suddenly conclude the series probably was somewhat racist. They don't take the time to do the argument justice. An author of a book on Lucy should certainly understand how television in the 50s stereotyped every character. If these writers want to claim Amos 'n' Andy was racist, then they have to maintain that Lucy was sexist and anti-women, Make Room for Daddy was anti-Lebanese, etc.
So if you're looking for a book that helps explain the debate over the series in depth, this isn't it. If you want just a quick overview of the show's radio and TV history, then this might work.

A GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT
By BioReader
Bart Andrew's LUCY, RICKY, FRED AND ETHEL: The I Love Lucy Story, was such a detailed and wonderful record of that great series that I looked forward to similar treatment for the AMOS AND ANDY Show. What a disappointment. Except for a listing of all the filmed episodes, there is precious little about the 'behind the scenes,' and making of the series. I could care less about Correll and Freeman, the white guys that originally broadcast on radio with their awful immitations of what they thought Black people talked like. Most people never heard of them and they, rightfully, seem relegated to old radio's trash-bin. It was the magic and sheer artistry of the actual Black performers that did the TV show that took that material and made it their own. I know that AMOS AND ANDY has, and I suppose continues, to create controversy and rarely has a TV entertainment been so vilified and hounded. I can appreciate the feelings of those that look upon AMOS AND ANDY negatively. However, it was just down-right, all-out FUNNY and gave acting opportunities to a great cast of accomplished, professional comedy experts. I was hoping for a book dedicated to their expertise and analysis of their craft as actors. I'd like to have known the behind the scenes details: who designed the sets,
costumes, what financial terms did the actors receive, along with details about their careers and what happened to them. There is some of this, but precious little. A much better (if a bit long-winded) treatment of the 'social implications' of AMOS AND ANDY can be found in THE ADVENTURES OF AMOS 'N ANDY: A Social History of a American Phenonomen by Melvin Patrick Ely.
