This book is a WOW

Very well written realistic condemnation of war especially the Vietnam war demonstrating both the personal, physical and mental destruction of the participants and the natural distortion of their thinking. As an Internist who was there a few years earlier and had a much easier time of it than the author I remember having very similar feelings. The author is very sensitive and intelligent. I was surprised at how open he was. He has become a very distinguished Dr despite his awful experiences. I am sure not because of them. So little is accomplished by war and one finds that the participants of previous wars are much less bullish on new wars and see that there is no real romance in them. The vast majority accomplish nothing good and are seriously destructive. This book will lead you to a much better perspective on war.

Eye opening account

Reading this book gave me a new respect for all of the men and women that served in Vietnam Although the book is specific to the medical profession and medical corps, it gives a vivid picture of what conditions were like. It is very graphic and it may be too descriptive and intense for some readers. I have a medical background and understood the medical terminology used throughout the book, but it may not be well understood by most lay persons. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for those reasons. Thank you to all who served in Vietnam and especially to those who never made it back. Thank you, Dr. Parrish, for opening our eyes. The last few pages said it all.

Vivid, let's the reader almost feel the pain! Keeping it real in our memories. What a vicious, inhuman, cruel and incredible high price paid in human death and suffering by both sides. May we never forget the terrible suffering and loss that will be with us for generations, and I'm one that didn't die! Dieter said it - and the older our generation grows, may our world leaders never send one more life into war.
