Surprisingly good
By Kafu Rahmansha
I must let it be known that I've never actually seen the motion picture that this was written from. With that recognized, I am reviewing this as a pure fantasy novel on its own merit.
As a writer, Norman Winski is quite capable, and the tale flows freely without any bumps or grinds from a readers perspective. The book as a whole reminded me of the old-school pulp fantasy classics similar to Moorcock or Howard. I'm not saying he's as talented as those masters, but the style and story are in the same vein, and if you take the script at face value, you should find it quite good. The hero is likable, the primary villain is despicable, and there are several interesting twists, wizardry, and action scenes to keep you reading on. It's an easy page-turner, and you'll be finished in a single afternoon if you wish.
I did have one complaint. At times, it was a little too overtly sexual. Not that there were too many sexual scenes, per se, but the characters themselves seem to be in a constant state of sexual arousal. Phrases such as "the massive bulge beneath his leggings", etc. are used far too often for no apparent reason. Many of these types of descriptions could have been left out.
Overall, it was an entertaining read. Not something I'd consider an all-time great, but well worth the time and (little) money I spent.

A compare-and-contrast for viewers of the movie
By Parisonn of Atlantis
There's not much to recommend this as a piece of literature but fans of the movie -- and yes, they do exist -- may enjoy noting how the book, (based on the original screenplay), differs at times from the product on the screen. Take the two torture scenes, for instance. In the movie Simon MacCorkindale is shown chained up in a dungeon wearing a loincloth. His back has been bloodied by lashes from a whip and he's burned with a hot iron. In the book, however, he's stretched on a rack and he's apparently naked because his balls are said to be beaten with a wet towel. Ouch!
As for Lee Horsley, in the movie he's crucified to an upright, X-shaped cross. (Though in some TV prints his hands aren't nailed to the wood but instead are shown fastened with metal cuffs.) In the book, however, the Horsley character lies face up on a tabletop, nailed at the hands and feet, while diners at the table dribble food and drink on him.
Devotees of the film may enjoy finding other differencse as well.

A perfect component to the motion picture
By J. Pingree
Based on the movie's original, uncut screenplay. Without giving too much away, The Sword and the Sorcerer delves deeper into each character's history, and helps to fill in many of the plot holes from the 1982 motion picture. Reading this novel after watching the movie will give you a much clearer sense of this little-known cult classic.
If you're a fan of the movie, or if you're buying the DVD, I highly recommend picking up this book.
