Borges small big book is to be read at 3: 30 pm, while the baby is asleep,the sun is out and the wind dies slowly. JLB describes the book as a "prudently chaotic" one. It is. It is an atlas in name only, maybe, appropriately, an atlas of the dream. The pictures are black and white and show a thin Borges with a ravishing Maria Kodoma. "Each section embodies a union of words and images".Example, page 59, Hotel Esja, Reykjavik. The words , from hotel to reykjavik, float below the top of the page, four inches below that is the text, here is a summary, beginning with a word for word first sentence:The most modest things in life are often a kind of boon. Blind, he feels a column in the hotel, knows it white, an archetype.The next page "The Labyrinth", with three small photos of the labyrinth of Crete,below the words, "This is the labyrinth of Crete. This is the labyrinth of Crete whose center was the Minotaur. This is the labyrinth of Crete whose center was the Minotaur that Dante imagined as a bull with a mans head in whose stone net so many generations were lost...".And, opposite the text, taking up a whole page is a tired Borges, cane , agape mouth, white hair floating, hay hair, eyes blitzed, unseeing but seeing, an ancient sage in the labyrinth whose center is Borges whose verbal net ensnares us all.
