Grade 1-5-The familiar plot of a man who dreams that he will hear good news in a distant place and, traveling to that place, learns that a fortune lies in his own backyard, provides the narrative frame for Dream Peddler. Its hero is the itinerant John Chapman, who hawks chapbooks, rejecting moneygrubbing for the vocation of giving "words, wisdom, ideas and dreams" to the literate poor. His own dearest wish is to open a printshop, "bringing books to the people and teaching all to read." Haley challenges children with words like "mountebank" and "fortnight" and the name of Chapman's dog ("Caxton"). The pictures, too, are challengingly full of period detail, as well as lively brushstrokes and glowing color. Interiors of a printshop, church, tobacconist's and bookseller's are vividly glimpsed, along with scenes of country activity (thatching, plowing, milling, etc.)-and above all, the crowded streets of 18th-century London. This bright book truly brings its history, and its idealism, to life.

Ages 7-9. Readers of all ages will delight in this lively story based on a fifteenth-century British folktale. John Chapman (not to be confused with Johnny "Appleseed" Chapman) is an itinerant peddler who travels around the English countryside selling penny books. When a voice in a dream urges him to "come to London Bridge to hear joyful news," he sets off for the bustling town with his canine companion, Caxton. By a complicated turn of events, he ends up finding his dream (and fortune) in his own backyard. John provides for his family, buying a printing press and bringing reading to the masses. The authorial note following the story is a little vague on the relationship between the actual person and the legendary figure, but it includes instructions for making a chapbook using photocopies of the book's endpapers. Influenced by the work of Hogarth, the vigorous scratchboard illustrations are replete with details of eighteenth-century life. Julie Corsaro
